This is actually the best review of Boyfriends that I’ve seen. It’s critical, but fair. I never understood why people were so hard on the characters being flat or the story being unrealistic. It’s basically just a short fluff comic not unlike comic strips found in the newspaper where it’s supposed to be read and enjoyed but not mulled over any deeper than that. It was never trying to be anything else so it shouldn’t be judged on those terms.
its probably how the creator itself is problematic so i guess thats why
from what ive heard they drew cp or sum
@@_choffeee I mean, that does sound messed up, but reviews that are harsher mostly because of the creator rather than the creation are disingenuous.

Even before finding put about the creator I personally still didn’t like it because it feels kinda… fetishizing? Like it’s essentially a comic for fujoshis. I love the poly aspect but for me poly content is just so much better when it’s blatantly bi/pan.

@@gabriellegoodwin4422The representation!
I hate How i know this but they are indeed not all bottoms. Everyone is like "verse" or "switch" or whatever u call it
I think it’s really interesting how fluff media is treated as “unrealistic” (which this particular story is in certain regards- just hear me out) but then dark media is often touted as the “realistic” counterpart. Especially in LGBT media it’s almost like we HAVE to suffer in order for it to be relatable, which actually kind of removes the whole point of what representation is supposed to do. Positive imagery of LGBT characters where the characters don’t get “punished” for being queer is an element of rep we should be adding to the repertoire, not treating as cringe. People can dislike it on the basis that slice of life stories or one note formulaic types aren’t their thing, but I like seeing a comic about queer and poly joy become successful.
I don't think people are insinuating it HAS to have suffering or whatev for it to be "relatable," it's just excessively fluffy, trite and "uwu" adorable that it kind of crosses the line of being kinda cringy (esp when it tries to be sexy, and it kinda leans on a more yaoi fan's view on how relationships are lol)
I don't really mind that the premise and characters are relatively simple and feel-good, it's just kind of. Cringy at times with the way it was written or presented.
There are definitely BL stories that are more realistic in terms of how relationships go, see Pegl0's comics, they're sort of in a similar genre but his comics don't really have moments in the dialogue that make me wince or anything, and are still pretty adorable without it just feeling super sugary.

Honestly, there’s a lot to be said about expectation vs reality with these things. If you want something to be what it isn’t, that’s on _you,_ not on the thing you’re reading. The saying “don’t like, don’t read” is a very valid one when the story is as harmless as this. If it’s not your thing, leave it alone and find something that is. There is no world in which you have the right to shit on what you don’t vibe with.
I’d rather have crazy amounts of fluff than a stupid amount of conflict back to back to back. The characters get slightly more development and there’s slightly more drama and conflict, though not still not a lot. Edit 2: I won't lie, I have more information I just found out about this morning. The pro-shipping wasn't of fictional characters, but of the K-pop band BTS. Specifically yaoi comics about the band members (I know nothing about BTS, so I don't know which members exactly). Personally, I feel that makes this pretty concerning. I'm trying to find out how long ago this was, because if it was 9 years ago like the other stuff, I can definitely believe they've changed since then. I respect the fact that Kwite actually do his research on the stuff he is talking about, instead of blindly hating on a weird comic series like this just for the sake of hating on something. Not exactly my cup of tea, but yeah as Kwite said there is no harm in a plain and cute comic like this. And i pretty much agree.
as it should be! The saying at my accepting college was, "to each there own"
I totally agree with you, but also maybe be a bit understanding on the part of people who might ridicule it without actually reading it. If I had the guts to do it, I would openly ridicule literally every single story about romance whether it’s just fluff or anything else. I think that there’s something out of romantic deficiency, it just seems like emotion porn if you know what I mean. I’m not trying to shame or put down anybody who’s into that, but I don’t like to classify this genre as something that is “just something that people like “either. Basically what I’m trying to say is, the genre is mainly made to fill in a hole, It’s not the same as other kinds of entertainment. Again I don’t hate the people that like that stuff, I honestly feel more sad for them than anything, that they feel so lonely and loved deficient that they either consciously or unconsciously cope with it via watching or reading about other peoples relationships, romantic or otherwise. Heck I know occasionally I’ve found myself falling into that hole, usually when it came to stories about families though. I think that’s why I was really able to relate with March comes in like a lion anime, because it’s about a lonely boy with an uncountable amount of childhood trauma that has led him towardly be a sweet and kind but very scared and depressed person, but slowly but surely learns what love means because of moving to another town and meeting some very wonderful people whom also lost some of their family and decide to welcome him in warmly and show him what the love of family is.
Of course people are into different things, but I can never make myself comfortable with romance stories. If you’re thinking “well but you know there’s people uncomfortable with the stuff you like “yes I’m very aware of that. There’s a lot of people I’ve met that don’t like the stuff I like but you know what? That’s life. It’s OK to cringe at something, and it’s OK for someone to cringe at something I like. There’s a difference between cringing and being disrespectful. i’m very open to someone cringing at something I like, to me that’s a normal part of existing. My parents hate the stuff I like, I have friends at dislike the stuff I like, but that’s life. As long as we can all get along and it doesn’t hinder our relationships, that’s all that matters to me.
Love this series and it gets more serious later on not just all fluff

this is a really good video, and it gave me a lot of new perspectives. a lot of my criticisms come with the writing and fandom, and i think you make a lot of great points that dont nesscesarily clash with my own
You want escalation, read lookism. Went from bullied boy is sexy now but has a secret to taking down organized crime.
Want gritting stories about serious stuff, read Get Schooled. There is a lot of good stuff, yall just are too happy to need some fluff, i get that.
or read everything that the author makes
@@ShinoBitee im trying to catch up, but i am loosing interrst in lookism (I'm somewhere in ep 250s) Viral hit kinda drags, and the only think I am kinda up to date with is To not die.
Well I think the problem is that there isn’t a lot of serious content involving queer people, especially poly relationships. There’s a hungering for representation and a lot of people see boyfriends’s potential for serious explorations of poly relationships and are disappointed because it isn’t that
YES, YOU ARE SO RIGHT
LOOKISM IS THE BEST FUCKING WBETOON WOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAA
I was always super confused about what the actual problem was with Boyfriends. I was worried I was just somehow being ignorant over something I was failing to understand, but my gut response was still pretty much just “it’s harmless fun, why is everyone looking for layers?”, so it’s kind of nice to hear that it wasn’t just me wondering what the issue was.
It’s actually kind of heartbreaking to see people get this heated over some simple escapism, to the point they go after the creator.
Honestly, if we’re trying to normalize the LGBTQ+, shitting on this webcomic is not going to do any good. It actually does the opposite. If we want LGBTQ+ people to be treated with equal rights to straight cisgender ones, we need to stop holding queer creators to such a ridiculously high standard that we run them off the internet. If a straight cisgender creator makes some harmless goofy shit like this, nobody bats an eye. But if you identify as queer everyone immediately demands you make god-tier content that must be perfect in every way.

Exactly

I don't think it has anything to do with being "cis" (don't like using that term) or having a different sexual orientation or gender identity. It has more do to with how the caracthers were portrayed. There are too many webtoons or mangas or stories overall that fall into estereotypes, some in a comical way and others like boyfriends, which leads to a plain story that you would just read if you were really bored or wanted to escape from reality a bit or were a teenager.
my issue is that nerd is genuinely canonically a proshipper- the creator themselves tweeted that nerd was a proshipper
You've got me hooked onto this comic... I am too embarrassed though to install webtoons because I don't want my friend to stumble upon it cause we all have that friend that takes and looks through our phone right? I'm not the only one right?
I love how this video is just so hilarious and honest. It's just a hoodie telling us that the Boyfriends Webtoon is just fluff and it's not really something anyone should have expectations on when reading it (as I feel should be a disclaimer for all Webtoons)
Also 3:03 is such a great way to start the video, like I had to pause it because 3:16 and beyond was delivered so well and so matter-of-factly that when the joke came and ran over my wheezing corpse, it just kept going. Great video!
The advertisements are making people expect way too high of standards for the actual comic. Like it's literally.. just a slice of life comic but idk, I guess since I don't take it seriously, its not horrible to me. But also, I'm used to seeing stereotypes for straight people too in comics lmfao
Thank you!!!! I agree!
Yeah, its fluff without plot, and its basically part of my weekly routine.
Fun fact: The creator gets harassed, slandered and sent suibaiting messages daily over this comic on twitter!
I dont even like Boyfriends myself (not my taste lol), but the way people treat it and the creator just REALLY rubs me the wrong way, esp when they become unironically homophobic and racist.
- - -
EDIT: Theres a ton of misinfo and assumptions in the replies (full war going on lmao) let me explain the things the creator did, as well as the rumors/misinfo!
"Creator is racist" When the creator was 13-14, they said the N-word not knowing it was a slur (English isnt their first language) Assumed it was slang because people use it so casually + so often. They were educated on the slur, they genuinely apologized and never said it again.
"They drew CP!!!" (CP is an outdated and gross term, please do not use it. CSEM is the correct term and it applies to CSA victims) When they were 16-ish, they drew NSFW of a kpop dude. Said kpop dude was OLDER than them, so it couldn't have been "CP" anyway. They were educated on why drawing NSFW of real people is harmful, they understood and apologized. Never did it again.
"They're a proshipper!!" This is a rumor that people spread for fun. They've never claimed to be a proshipper. The closest thing was them joking that one of their characters is proship, that's all lol.
The actual definition of proship is "being against harassment regarding ships, art and fiction (even if it's something gross or you dislike it)".

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!!!
This video actually introduced me to the webtoon and I've been reading it and so really good Webtoon
Look, I've never read it and don't intend to, but i will defend it because there are so many romance mangas and books and webcomics that are purely getting together and fluff. It's normal and cute and not cringe because they're straight. We as queer people deserve that too. I don't want to read about hate crimes or homophobia or intense conflict, I just want likeable characters that experience queer atttaction and act like me to have fun and be happy. If anyone says this is cringe but has ever enjoyed a hallmark movie in their life, I'm going to assume they're homophobic.
FUKIN Y E S.
The double standard is annoying!
it is cringe because of how fetishized it feels
@@pickleaaa1 Gay guys are allowed to make art about their fantasies.
you should read andy bass. it's an enjoyable experience for me
It's cringe because of the poly relationship
Honestly I respect how self indulgent the webtoon is lmao, even though I personally found it too cutesy. Iirc the author lives in a very conservative country so I can understand them using the series as an outlet. I disagree with people saying it's straight up fetishising mlm relationships but I can kinda see why'd they think so -- cause there's a lot of moments where you can clearly tell what the author's kinks are lmao 💀💀
The author themself is a whole other discussion but all the misinformation makes them out to be a worse person than they are, even though they already apologised for their old actions. They definitely don't deserve the amount of harassment they're currently getting
THIS AS exact same thoughts tbh.
I think I may check out this comic now because my favorite tag on AO3 is "tooth-rotting fluff." I use fiction as a means of escapism and a low-conflict, fluff-filled series like Boyfriends seems perfect for that.
I love kwite 😊his content genuinely makes me smile and laugh
Boyfriends is like the gay polyamorous version of Twilight but ngl the color palette and art slaps
YES THE COLOURS ARE SO PRETTY
@fatui harbingers. respectfully no thanks
I KNOW, IT LOOKS SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING god damn it
It’s so unfortunate 💀 pretty sure the creator isn’t too good(heard a lot of controversy) and, like you said, it’s literally just twilight. But the art style and colors are so pleasing to look at
Ikr I literally love how they did nerd's hair color in every scene

i agree so much !! i actually kept up with boyfriends long before it blew up as this Big Cringe Disaster and i was super nervous to watch this bc i was worried youd just make fun of it and call it cringe like every other 'review' ive seen lately, but its refreshing to see someone acknowledge that yes its sugary and shallow and unfunny but in doing so it also provides good escapism and isnt hurting anyone :)
So, like i commented in the last video, is a comfy and chill comic (at least for me), that is not for everyone, but is a fine piece in general, the only downside is that holy bad promotional ads that make people revolt in cringe.
As a person who started reading Boyfriends before it became popular to dislike it, I was mostly reading it for the poly representation & felt rlly happy that is was mostly positive and lighthearted while still being realistic (not rlly, but pointing out important things like communication etc). and i think thats what the series does ok - giving the poly ppl the representation we practically never get.... so its sad when people discard it cuz its got cringey marketing((
I hate the gay
L
I dropped it cause the author is 😨 and their terrible things translate into the comic.... (nerd and goth are both self inserts, nerd is a proshipper and lolicon, non are white >like American or european< they are asian, yet they all white as hell... so yah-) the
@@FandomFrenzy yeah, i dont mind the self-inserts - its not like its a proper character study & more like a fluff compilation. idk abt how nerd is lolicon (in the autors style they r all borderline chibi & shipping is not smth i find problematic). as for the race thing - i was not reading this for asian representation & rlly did not care where the story is set, bc the culture basically has no impact on the plot. however i understand how all of those things might be deal breakers for some... but i dont think any of those things rlly make the comic or the author bad. more like just not palatable for some readers

Pretty sure the creator is racist-
@@Riv3rst0ne They were 14 when they said the n word and they already apologized for it. I mean, I get that it's still wrong, but I feel like people are just trying to find reasons to hate them that are socially acceptable (because just being cringe isn't a valid reason most of the time) rather than being genuinely upset by what they did. I may be wrong and they may have done worse things that I'm not aware of (aside from the bts stuff), but that's just the vibe I'm getting

As I'm seeing, this webcomic had a big potential of making something more than just slice of life.
Gosh, if there was an actual drama I'd actually read it and like it, even if it's not perfect.
And I see that the art style is actually good! And I see that since the start to the actual run of the comic, it seems that the author is getting better and better

got interested in the webtoon after watching your last video on it, and sat for 5 hours straight with my brain off just reading it. Honestly, I was expecting much worse but it wasn't that bad, it had its funny and sometimes cute moments, as well as moments that made me want to pray for my eyes to forget what I just read/saw as a non religious person. But besides that it's pretty chill for when you want something light to read and don't mind the cringy moments that ARE supposed to make you cringe. Lemme tell you, when I finished and looked at the time and saw it was point midnight I just sat for a while comprehending that 5 hours of my life were gone on a comic. And no, I do NOT acknowledge that the voice overs exist. I'd rate it a good 7/10 because the art style is pretty cute
