both prometheus and sisyphus are immortals that are in endless sucked of pain. prometheus stole fire from zeus and gave it to mortals, this being punished in an endless sycle of an egal tearing out their liver and growing it back. sisyphus tried to escape death and is forced to push a boulder up a steep hill to the top, only for ut to roll back down
We are immortally mortal. We reach our end when we get out of the cycle of pain.

I'm an ao3 author and reasons why I missed updates since I started writing include:
-2 family members getting DEPORTED
- Being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder
- Being put on antipsychotics and no longer being obsessed with my fandom
- Getting food poisoning on my first day at a new job
- Recovering from alcoholism
- My beta reader disappearing
It just turned me into a magnet for bad luck as some sort of cosmic joke

As an AO3 author myself. I lost my ability to walk or eat anything and everything because of several rare physical disorders and the readers cried more than my family did 😄

Deadass I was once reading about a fic FILLED with trauma and shit only to learn it was *temporarily discontinued because the author had that trauma themselves and couldn't write about a recovery they hadn't experienced themselves yet, and the characters turned into fictives since the author had DID*
that has happened to me once help- (I have OSDD not DID but theyre similar and my 4 Dazai fictives convinced me to stop writing dazai fics-)

I have a theory that the most accident-prone and unlucky people in the world will confide in AO3 to numb their pain, and so they sometimes miss updates or whatever AO3 authors do because of their dogshit lives, then come back so casually as not to look weak to their devoted readers.

I mean that was my guess, because I've been in that position, and most "haha almost died it's fine dw abt it here have a chapter" stories are either vaguely or heavily hinted at trauma or general mental illness being experienced by the author
I wrote exactly like that to vent either spastic thoughts and obsessions or disturbingly overwhelming emotion
I don't think it's a weakness thing it's moreso just feeling bad for not updating
this is 100% correct. also some of us feel bad for not updating due to extremely supportive readers (ao3 is known for its insanity but the readers are truly some of the nicest people on the internet) or we've dealt with entitled twat readers who get passive aggressive when there isn't an update within a week... ao3 is it's own form of hellscape.
There are 2 types of ao3 authors:
1.- "Hey guys sorry for uploading this chapter 23 seconds late, my boyfriend turned out to be my long lost brother and my dad disowned me, then as I was running away from home a car hit me and broke half my bones but I'm sure no one wants to hear about silly ol' me here's the new chapter ^w^"
2.- "Sup bitches, I didn't fell like writing for the last 6 months, have a page"

Kwite being a fanfic reader and talking about tropes and common plotlines is the best part of my week. As an AO3 author, I get an unhealthy amount of validation from the fact that my favorite pastime that most of my family finds downright disturbing yet one of my favorite UA-camrs enjoys it.

I could never be a fanfic writer, these guys have set the bar way too high. I'm going to have to explain why I thought it was okay to take a week off just to "relax" when the other authors are out here writing like their lives depend on it rain, sleet or shine or life threatening accident.

I saw one where the author lost their arm and was apologizing for any spelliny mistakes as they were still getting used to their prosteric arm. After this event I want to ask all of the AO3 authors out there, what actually keeps you going? There's no way passion beats something as traumatic as amputation so there has to be another factor in your ever-dying motivation.
I have a choice to either process my emotions and cope normally or project everything onto a character i relate to and make them deal with it instead. Its significantly easier to do the second one, plus its actually productive
I mean... passion keeps you going through trauma. It's about knowing you have something to get up for in the morning and a group of people who also love seeing you do what you do.

It gives me something to focus on and keep going through all the terrible painful stuff that happens, it's like "damn, life is kinda terrible right now.... I'm gonna write something that makes me feel happy or I'm going to inflict this suffering onto a character I relate to so that something else can share my pain."
I think it's like having this little sliver of control when everything is going to shit
honestly these author's notes remind me of that one author who realized that their fic was likely in some way cursed, because every time they'd try to write it, someone in their life would die. The saga ended with them trying one last time and subsequently apologizing and saying that they did not mean for Queen Elizabeth to die xD
I remember being an AO3 Author for a while and literally two seconds (weeks) later, I tripped and hit my head. The doctors said that I couldn't be on the internet for more than an hour (which now it's healing so I finally can be). So three days later, I typed "Sorry guys, I hit my head and had to get stitches on it." I don't know if it's as extreme as the others but...I mean, the title doesn't lie-

Completely unironically, I started writing a fanfic and boom, 7 chappies into publishing the story, I get hit with a full-blown viral attack that literally spread throughout my family in less than 24 hours.
Writing fanfiction on Ao3 is either actually cursed OR it's just the universe giving us interesting things to put in our Author Notes cause they're basically our autobiographies while we write that story.

I was reading a fanfic once and the end notes were the author telling everyone about the horrible things their abusive parents do, at one point they posted a chapter saying that their mom changed the wifi password on purpose so they couldn't use it and that as soon as they got access to the internet they would post. All of the comments were support and legal advice.
They also said that they had to make money to get their own wifi
And their parents broke their phone and cut them off from their phone plan. Their dad also threw something at them so they couldn't write for a while
as a former ao3 author who wrote notes like those: it almost like a curse, the moment you start ao3 fic your life becomes pure chaos. also, it is very odd bc we really do feel like we owe an explanation for being late even tho we don't owe it to anyone. but it's just so nice to have people come back for more it creates a very strange relationship with the readers

A few years ago I started reading this fanfic on AO3 and it was like my favorite for so long. The author updated really regularly, but every now and then they would dip for a while and come back with things like "I broke my hand," or "my family member died."
They haven't updated the fic in a year. I honestly have been so worried about a random person for a probably 3 years now. AO3 authors are eldritch beings not of this world and we do not deserve them. That being said, I really hope above mentioned author is okay
I think it's also this kinda readers' attitude that whenever an author stops updating for a while, it can't possibly because they got bored of writing and just doing other things. Nah, they must be either dead or dying

To me, fanfictions are worlds we authors create, spun from the threads of imagination spurred into action by the original work. We know that once we decide to stop, the world dies with it, and perhaps it’s just me, but I never get over it. It’s the end of a love for something so strong that it drove me to pour my heart and soul out in return, and it’s painful to see it disintegrate into the unrelenting march of time.
I used to be an Ao3 writer…. During that time I got the flu, missed school for a week; my eyesight became shit and now I have to wear glasses; became Ill, got taken to many hospitals only for them to be like “you got nothing” lasted with this pain for months… turns out it was a teratoma (which is very rare) and had to get surgery, resulting in losing more school days; lost more than half of my friends, and almost failed because of how much school I missed….. never again..

as an ao3 author, there was a period between chapters 11 and 12 of my current work (from early may and june) when i didn’t update for 46 days. in that time i broke a finger, sat 19 (actually important) exams while caring for my covid-having sister as our parents were overseas, turned 16, and graduated. i updated the morning after grad and promptly got on a plane with my best friend to go to canada for 2 weeks lmao. i’m traveling again in two days, my update schedule is in shambles 🪦
edit: one of my favourite authors who i’ve sorta formed a mutual friendship over reviewing each others updates with has been in and out of hospital for chronic illness things since december and he still has a flawless update schedule 😭 definitively determined

Nothing can stop Ao3 authors. During the start of the pandemic I failed two classes and had a mental breakdown, but you know my fanfic got regular updates.
You know, I feel this. I failed all my classes in the pandemic, but you know what? My fanfiction could never be better! I was updating like there was no tomorrow. Now, I just got 50K unposted of a new fic that’s only about a third of the way completed.

As an AO3 author I have concluded that we don’t suffer because we have the curse of AO3, but we’re all just suffering in general and fanfic is just trauma dumping except with fancy words and metaphors.
everyone’s going through conflicts with varying levels of severity, it’s just fanfic writers have the balls to dump it online for readers as a meta b-plot

On the topic of fanon inventions... It's one of the things I love the most.
In my main fandom (Supergirl, or Supercorp), we just collectively decided that an assistant who said maybe 2 lines and appeared in one episode was the closest one of the mcs had to a friend for a while. We just... Chose that. She has a character and everything.
And like... It's so wholesome. It's great. We all love Jess.
Can confirm, started writing some Crack-Taken-Seriously a couple weeks ago, ended up in the E.R. last week for intense burning pain internally, and may potentially have appendicitis. A few days before that, my laptop charger broke and it took so freakin' long to figure out what type, then had to get an adapter because it still wasn't the right one. My mental health keeps spiralling!(And now my physical health too.)
Edit:update bois, been a while. Completely unrelated to the prior experience, few months ago, tried to take up writing again, suddenly got mysteriously very, very sick. I started pissing blood, and about a week in, the pain from my pelvis spread up my lower back. Went to the ER at about one in the morning because of that. They said uti, like previously expected, and prescribed antibiotics.
The next day, got a call from my primary-had seen her earlier that week to get some tests done just in case-had staph! The pain up my back was because it may have spread to my kidneys. She gave me different antibiotics because the staph is apparently resistant to the others. Could’ve straight up died if they didn’t find this out.
I’d had a nephrologist scheduled about a month ago, had to be cancelled because my health insurance was changing and I could not pay for that shit. Now I have one by the end of this month, let’s hope my kidneys don’t shut down before then, eh?🤞

Bro I was on this steroid inhaler for 10 months and never once had any problems, I started writing on AO3 in April and in late May I got oral thrush so badly that my entire mouth was covered in cottage cheese lookin ass shit and my throat and tongue went numb and I could barely swallow for an entire week, I was able to get rid of it after a couple weeks on anti fungals and was put on a new asthma medication, anyways last week it came back again so that's twice in less than 2 months after a lifetime of having asthma and never experiencing anything like this

as an ao3 writer, i actually passed out from low blood pressure and had to be rushed to the er. when I woke up, the first thing i did was check my phone and the first thing i saw was my readers questioning why i wasn't updating my fanfic. i deadass just walked out of there just to start writing the new chapter.

THE AUTHOR LITERALLY DIED-
Once a fanfic I was reading took a while to update because the author had gotten top surgery, their partner got kicked out of the house, and then they both moved to a state across the US to avoid their respective families. NGL they should've taken more time for themself.
I'd imagine it was pretty therapeutic for them to have a fic to write, honestly. As much as we joke about imaginary pressure to not disappoint readers, the escapism fanfiction offers, both reading and writing, is more a reprieve than an obligation. The writing process is like that sometimes.
As an Ao3 author myself, it's the curse. You'll be writing something good, something amazing, the passion, the magic, that perfect update for your fic
Then life hits you with the "I think the fuck not" stick and delays it by another week

A03 author here, can confirm. I didn't post in like a month because I was studying for my GCSE and then three days after my last one I went on holiday abroad for the first time in eight years, but the hotel internet was shit and my time was taken up because of activities when it wasnt, but then the surrounding mountains got set on fire - it was literally raining ash; my dad got an infected leg and had to go to hospital; my youngest younger brother got so sick he had to have medicine administered via a hand cannula; my oldest younger brother also got sick, then I got sick, and then we all went home except dad who went to another hospital; and then my middle younger brother and my mum then got sick so we took a test and it turns out everyone had caught covid. So it had been a time, that's for sure!
I hope your family gets through all of that without too much pain, and recovers well. 🖤

hi! i’m an unrelated ao3 author who also went to a mental hospital and i can confirm that i was completely bricked up the entire time and all my thoughts were replaced with thoughts of writing porn
Yeah we got the short end of the stick, for example, 2 reasons why I was delayed in writing:
Partner got hit by a mini van and almost died, so to keep myself sane I wrote some stuff with about 3 hours of sleep in 7 days.
Passed out due to pain, at the hospital (and after emergency sugery) I found out it was laaaaaarge gullblader stones that not only filled it up, but some cut through a bunch of stuff so I had a lot of scare tissue (which explain my constant puking/stomach issues) and other floated about in the inside by my organs, apparently I should have been dead at that point.
Needles to say I lmao through it all and said " sorry for the wait, here's some good o'll yaoi to make it up you all :c "

AO3 writers are just a complete different breed of person, if they think of something they will write it down in a beautiful story and then you realize it’s a fanfiction.
One of my fics just got updated and the author’s note was “sorry this took longer than usual, I was in a car crash. Anyways don’t expect other people on the road to know what they’re doing” and the fact that I wasn’t even fuckin surprised...
