My biggest problem was that they didn’t all seem like they liked eachother. I think why these boyfriends clips feel so awkward has to do with the way the dialogue is written and how flat all of the characters are. The art style is nice and clean AND efficient, which is a good thing for this medium of story telling, but the actual stories they’re telling are very flat because of the nature of the characters being 2D stand ins for people living out the gay experiences they want to have in real life. And to be clear, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I do find it to be the main source of my personal discomfort while watching this, as it feels so manufactured and the interactions are without flaw. It’s uncanny.

I’m honestly so surprised the comments under his video are so….idk normal?? With most ppl agreeing it’s incredibly cringey but that’s it. All my exposure to the “boyfriends webtoon hate” was people calling the author/artist all kinds of terrible names. Calling them homophobic, transphobic, fetishiser, etc etc. seeing some of the “criticism” (which was more often then not blatant hate not only towards the webtoon but to the human who created it). And I even had people tell me in person (not just on Twitter) that because they used caricatures that they were homophobic/transphobic and I was dumbfounded. It felt like they killed a puppy or smth with the amount of hate they were getting
This really falls into the trope of “gay guy has high pitched squeaky voice like a girl.” For me personally, it’s what makes this so unbearable.

I think for the author it's goal is escapism and they took a romcom kind of approach to writing, It's not suppose to be compelling. It's just a gay version of all those super cheesy romance novels

I started reading boyfriends when it was only a few weeks old and I'm kinda sad about what happened to it. It was originally a smaller black and white comic and seemed really interesting. It lost a lot of its character when it was revamped and is a lot less about the original concept. The original felt like it was trying to say something about poly/queer relationships and the struggles that come with them. It's just fluff now.
I’d argue that has to do with the authors own life and interests though. Maybe he, as a poly person, didn’t want to think about the complexities and struggles of a poly relationship. Maybe he just wants to write wish-fulfillment fluff where those things work out easily and people don’t have to struggle. Idk, maybe not every piece of media has to be deep and meaningful, or even particularly realistic.

@@vaishnavisingh9244 When the creator was a teen, they wrote BTS smut when one of the members was a minor (this fic has since been taken down and the author did have regret for writing it) and a couple years ago repeated a joke they heard on twitter that included the n word despite the fact that the author was like 13, Indonesian, with little to no knowledge of western racial slurs (the author basically saw the old tweet, apologized, deleted it and any other tweets they made when they were younger that they now realize are problematic) outside of those two major ones, a lot of the criticisms I've seen mainly boils down to it just not being someone's cup of tea and getting mad that it doesn't fit their idea of what queer media should be
