I'm in my late 40s and I've only been exposed to what my elders or peers have worn. So we're talking Rolex, Omega, Seiko, Gshock, Swatch and (ugh) smart watches. Any other brand I see at the mall isn't worth it because I don't know enough about it. This channel has opened my eyes to the plethora of watch brands and how to appreciate the details that are glazed over by 95% of the population such as movement, dial design and heritage. Thank you for having this channel. My wallet hates you though. :P
What a gorgeous watch. Mido is so underrated IMO, they produced really great pieces. This one is a homerun.
This is why I went for Mido as my first Swiss watch. They are really beautifully finished with very good attention to detail that I don’t even find in more expensive brands.
I've had the blue bezel for a little over a year. Absolutely love it and find myself choosing it for my daily wear over far more expensive watches in my collection. The antireflective coating is amazing and the dial just looks striking in the sun. I generally wear it on the bracelet, it is really a phenomenal bracelet, but i will put it on a nato on the warm days and it looks equally great. The watch definitely hit way above its price point.
Now looks like I have to make this my GMT watch target. Every new video from Teddy, just gives you more great choices on what watch to buy. Thanks
Great review. I actually love the fact that it has an elapsed time bezel on top of the GMT functionality. It's one of my most used complications on a watch, and I would miss not having it.
I purchased this Mido Ocean Star GMT Pepsi about 2 weeks ago and I love it! It is not too big and sits just fine on my 7" wrist. The functionality of this piece is outstanding. In spite of complaints regarding the dive bezel, I feel it is appropriate for this Dive / GMT tool watch. True, you can only track 2 time zones when travelling but, that's all I really require. The extra NATO strap is a welcome addition and gives the watch a completely different, cool, and relaxed look. The quick disconnect pins make the strap switch very easy. Although returning to the bracelet is a bit more of a challenge when trying to line up the pins. For a watch which ticks both the dive watch as well as the true GMT watch boxes this Mido Ocean Star is a home run!
I bought this watch, from you, and love it. it's just an all around amazing watch and your service was great. Thanks to the whole "Teddy" team.
Always great videos. There are a lot of folks that say it's too big, or even your comments about the elapsed time dive bezel. I'll say that there are a lot of watches out there, GMT's or divers, that are great for smaller wrists. I'm a big guy and need a bigger watch. I'm also actually a diver and do dive with my dive watches! I looked everywhere for a GMT diver that has the elapsed time divers bezel and was ecstatic when I found this one a year ago. I have this in blue, and just returned from a dive trip to Cozumel where I wore it (along with my Doxa Sub1200T) for my dives. I use a computer, but also use my watch as a backup timer. More for nostalgia than practicality, but isn't that why most of us love divers? It was great to have the true GMT when I got on dive trips to Mexico, Indonesia, or the Red Sea and have a beautiful watch to wear the entire time. I ordered the bracelet that's been backordered for a while and can't wait. I really like this style dive extension (micro-extension) as my Doxa has the same system and I am constantly adjusting it throughout the day. Though, it's barely enough extension to go over a 3mm wetsuit. I have to use a silicon strap when diving with a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit. Keep up the great work, but never forget that there are still real divers that wear real dive watches!
Proud owner of a new Ocean Star. Absolutely love it. Everything about it exudes quality. The anti reflective coating makes for a clear brilliant view. You might notice that the blue in the dial comes and to black depending on light angle which just adds to it's style. Essentially a ETA Powermatic 80, its the one watch in my collection that is still ticking after some watch box down time. This watch pops, really stands out. You are spot on as usual Teddy.
I love nearly everything about this watch. What size is your wrist? Any chance my 7” wrist is up to the task?
Love Mido ocean star GMT. Love the true GMT, 80 hr power, the friction pins on the metal bracelet makes it easy to adjust down a size. With the 20 atm water resistance you do not have to worry about jumping in the water. This a great traveling watch a great price. I have a 7" wrist it wears fine.
I finally just ordered one off your site because of this video. Was also looking at the Longines Zulu Time GMT but I really didn’t want to spend double the money. Can’t wait to get it!
Been waiting for this introduction. Thanks.
A great video as always Teddy. I am right on the verge of buying the Longines Zulu Time but this has given me some more food for thought before pulling the trigger.
I am bit late to the video, but thank you Teddy for bringing awareness to Mido, and specifically to this beautiful GMT. I would not have found out about this gorgeous watch if it weren't for your channel. That NATO strap combination is just outstanding!
Not being a diver, I'd never really "got" dive watches - until I looked up how to use one. I now realise that the dive bezel can function as a pretty effective count-up or count-down timer. This is useful for travel, especially when trying to make train / flight connections, and is therefore a good adjunct to a true GMT watch IMO.
Nice review. I bought the black dail/blue bezel with the fabric blue strap. I like the fact that it's a hybrid watch, letting me track GMT time for iRacing plus the home time where ever I am at and a fully functional dive bezel, good deal. I don't really need the 3rd time zone stuff...
glad you reviewed this one, I had it on my radar (along with the Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT Premium 500 and the new TRAVELLER GMT Diver Watch) for a while tough the 44mm case is a bit of a concern for me. And, while I'm waiting to decide on it, Seiko just introduced their affordable GMT movement which opens totally new opportunities for them and other microbrands. Can wait to see what models will come up next.
Got the Steinhart McQueen homage (Ocean GMT with patina) about 6 weeks ago - incredible. Less than half the price.
Great review! I think this new colour scheme is perfect. I am putting this on my wish list.
I like the diver format for a GMT. When I travel I typically only bring one watch and a lot of times for vacation that includes snorkeling and scuba diving. It’s nice to be able to have that GMT functionality and be able to swim with the watch knowing it will be safe
As the owner of the original blue-bezelled version (and a small-ish wrist), I'd say it does not look grotesque on the wrist despite the size. Perhaps not a daily wearer, although it could be for anyone at 7+ inch wrist, it's a great activity watch. While Teddy thinks the timing bezel is a "strange choice for GMT", I think it's one of the best features of this watch, giving it an additional functionality of an ACTUAL diver and timing anything on land as well.
I’m also apprehensive about the size- would you say the curved lugs and shorter lug-to-lug help minimize its visual impact?
@@dylanschang6386 yes, absolutely. It's big, but not grotesquely so.
If only that thing was smaller, it looks like a perfect watch.
Amazing timing. This caught my eye in the window of a local AD here in Australia last week and I've been considering it since then. Going back tomorrow to try it on (because I got distracted by a Zulu and forgot last time 🤣).
It honestly didn't scream 'big watch' to me like some can but I'll see for sure tomorrow. If a decent discount is available I might be walking out with a new watch! I personally love the double functionality of the GMT and timing bezel. It gives the watch so much versatility, makes it an excellent adventure holiday traveller, and is much more useful to me than the third time zone.
While I've been considering the Zulu, I'm not sure I'm willing to spend that much on a GMT right now - maybe in the future if I can ever afford and acquire a Rolex Batman. I'm turning 40 next year and think I'd rather go big with an iconic chronograph (Moonwatch or Monaco) and leave the GMT to this beautiful Mido. We'll see!
A great review Teddy, I have to agree Mido is a brand that really should be experienced more in a similar way to Rado that also falls under the Swatch Group umbrella. The time elapsed bezel makes sense for the Ocean Star family being a dive watch but I agree an alternative with a rotating 24 hour bezel (preferably 48 click for those N+- 0.5 cities in the world) would be a nice option. Dimensions on paper seem a tad large but as I've said before it's worth seeing and trying it on if possible to experience how it looks and feels in the flesh. The bracelet is a revelation in the adjustment stakes.
I really love these ocean star GMT's except for their size. I hope Mido will release a smaller version up to 41mm diameter with a slightly smaller lug to lug and 20mm lugwidth. Then I'm certain it will instantly become one of the most desirable GMT's for people who don't have large wrists.
I think the movement size can support a 40-41 mm version. We will see if it happens. Agreed that would be a hit!
>true GMT!
>13.6 thickness!!
>several colors!!!
>$1,400!!!!
>great bracelet!!!!!
Oh….It’s 44mm and a 50ish lug to lug….
I think a smaller case size and thickness may add to the manufacturing cost. That's why the expensive dive watches tend to be thinner and/or smaller.
Well there is the hodinkee version at 40.5 mm
@@derptg2898 very close to pulling the trigger on that one
Marketing and brand positioning certainly influence how we perceive things. It's no different for this watch. If we can just overlook these aspects for a moment and look at what's being done with this Mido Ocean Star GMT, we'll realize what a great value this watch really is. It offers a lot of bang for the buck! It's like having the best of both worlds, GMT and dive in an affordable package. Great breakdown, Teddy!
The red pops so nice, I’m considering in selling my Mido Ocean Star GMT with blue bezel just to get this one.
Great review; much appreciated.
handsome piece with a nautical colour feel - especially on the nato. Thx Teddy - keep 'em coming....
That is an awesome looking watch. I love the Pepsi inside with a black bezel.
This is my favorite GMT format - dive bezel with 24 hours marked on the rehaut or dial. Trading the ability to track a third time zone on the bezel gives me extra practicality for timing things diver-style. It’s hard to pull off without crowding the whole design. This one has good breathing room on the dial, but it is certainly a chonky boy on my 7” wrist.
Completely agree, I don't know why Teddy wants a 24-hr bezel instead of a timing bezel.
I actually got this watch despite having a 6.5 inch wrist and I still love it. To be fair, I have a flatter wrist so my top to bottom wrist surface is just around 51mm, which is passable for this watch's lug to lug. This definitely punches above its price point in terms of feel and look.
This GMT offering looks great and checks all the boxes for me. Wow!
Wearing my blue one as I watch this vid! Mido is most def a sleeper! If you have the wrist size for it, I highly recommend!
This might be my perfect workhorse watch. A true GMT dive watch with 200m of water resistance? Hell yes. And unlike Teddy, I love the elapsed time bezel. I was looking at the Seiko PADI King Turtle literally the day before this video dropped, but I didn’t pull the trigger on it because I wasn’t sure if I wanted a dive watch or a GMT watch.
Welp, this just decided it for me. Just picked one up from your site, Teddy. I’m a little nervous about its size, but even though I’m about a 6.5” wrist, I love how a 42mm Bambino looks on me, so I’m hoping that I can pull this one off, lol.
I hav a 6.5” wrist as well, how does the watch wear now that you’ve had it a while?
Can't deny this is the best Swiss true GMT watch available at this price. With a screw down crown and a 200m water resistant? Take my money! Oh wait, they already got it.... lol
Also has 80 power reserve
As someone who is a traveling diver, I think the GMT paired with an elapsed dive time bezel is super functional. But I have smaller wrists, so this one is still a bit too big. I wish there were smaller watches with this exact same package. The marathon GSAR with this exact movement would be my perfect watch.
Agree
I always adore and respect the "IN-HOUSE" movements like Seiko, Swatch, Citizen brands. This Mido having a "True GMT" at this price range, indeed, deserves respect. After watching this very well done review it is on my short list now.
Excellent presentation.
Brilliant - modern interpretation of the Rolex GMT master . . .
The dive watch bezel is a bonus as a count-down timer for everyday activities like cooking !
I've got the titanium 200c and have been wanting one of these GMTs for a while. Quality on these watches is nuts at the price point. Easily one of the best ETA based movement watches out there and its not even close. The bracelet is really comfortable, that AR coating has taken an absolute beating from travelling, my dog, and door frames. It still looks brand new. I can't justify buying a watch 4-5x the price for the same movement when these exist. I still like my more expensive watches, but Mido gets just as much wrist time as they do.
Love the dive watch bezel and GMT combo!
I believe you're incorrect about the time lapse bezel being a drawback. I time lapse bezel is EXACTLY what I needed from this watch. I'm a diver and I travel a great deal, so I needed a watch that tracks my home time zone and allows me to go diving. It's the perfect watch and an uncommon design, which sets it apart from other (in my view, less useful) GMTs. I love my MIDO Ocean Star GMT. Great build quality, perfect size for a bigger, more rugged guy like me, at a price that makes it a great daily wear when travelling. The contrasting hands are important to me too, because I ride motorcycles in rough terrain and need to be able to view the time at a glance. Perfect watch, and I highly recommend it.
Superb watch and channel..!
So I went back and forth on the 24hr bezel, vs. the elapsed one, and like others have posted, I prefer the later, as tracking two TZs is enough for me and I use the timing bezel much more frequently, so I bought one of these.
Nice looker. I think there a well untapped with some of the ETA brands .Mido, Certina and Longenes all have great history. Also in reality these brands are more within a realistic price range the majority of people can afford and enjoy. I also believe they will not disappoint performance wise. It is fun to window shop the great luxury brands. But a lot of ETA family watches are offering a great watch that is Swiss. As far as size I feel that the 38mm width is more spot on and 38 to 40mm could very well be the width for sport watches and 32 to 36 for more dressy units. Because deep down I feel people would admit they actually fit most wrists better. They also need to make suits a little looser (better fit) so men do not look like Jethro Bodine from the Beverly Hillbillies in a suit.
I love the Breitling style dail! Hope they make more colors! A white/tiffany would be nice 😃
Saw this watch on display in France. It looks very classy. Might get one at some point.
Finally a watch I like and in an acceptable price range that is big enough for me. So tired of everything I want being just 40 or 41mm. Thank you Mido
Good review Teddy
Do you have the steel bracalet for the blue version?
Hey Teddy! I enjoy your videos alot!
Anyway you have mentioned Ball Watches before and snice GMTs became more noticed (thanks to Seiko's 5 sport GMT) I have wanted a GMT with Day and Date. So I fell in love with the Roadmaster Marine GMT from Ball Watch Co. Consequently I went on a mission to see what was wrong with Ball watches so I can forget about even dreaming of one. Instead I am shocked how much I want one for everyday use. Your video on Ball Watch history was cool, but let's see if Ball Watches will lend you a Roadmaster Marine GMT with the Day/Date complication. That video would have me floored as I have the black and Green version on the way. Originally I wanted a Grand Seiko that was not an every day (lacking a day/date complication) and was merely a fixation with the spring drive movement. So I was happy with my special edition turtle(day/date) till Seiko released their in house GMT with the 4r 34. I got the orange variant of the Seiko 5 sport GMT and loved it so much it pained me to see it lacked my favorite complications being "day/date". So I went down a short rabbit hole and realized there are not many GMT automatic movements with a Day/Date.. Why is this watch not sold out and talked more about?
I actually really like this design (not my favorite colorway of it though). The problem I have with normal GMTs is they put the GMT numerals on the bezel which basically makes it useless as an elapsed time tool. I think Mido's presentation is much smarter. You get the GMT numerals on the extreme edge of the dial and still have the full functionality of the elapsed-time bezel, with everything very easy to read. I wish more makers did it this way as it makes the watch infinitely more versatile and functional BOTH as a GMT and as an elapsed time device. For criticisms, I wish it had a triangle indicator on the bezel at 12 (with an actual lume pip) which would make it easier to set at a glance; and a numeral on the bezel at the 10-minute mark (but I get they were going for styling). I also wish they would offer the choice of a bracelet or a strap (maybe multiple varieties and color options of straps) for each colorway. Small complaints, really. Mido seems to have hit this one out of the park, particularly if they are factory regulating them to the accuracy range you describe.
I have the blue version of this watch and it’s incredible how luxurious it feels on the wrist, as you said the bracelet is one of if not the best in this price point rivaling more expensive ones. The travelers gmt function works like a charm and the accuracy is fenomenal. Mido give a run for the money to more expensive watches in my collection. Excellent video and keep the good work my friend!
Thanks for sharing an owner's perspective, my friend. Agreed on your points!
This is now on my list. Especially with that red, white, and blue NATO strap.
Great video. Thx.
Another top tier vidoe. Love to see it
Extremely high quality and beautiful watch.💪💪💪
I bought the black dial from you Teddy and it is my favorite watch. The only very minor complaint I have is that it can be difficult to tell the time in the dark as a result of the minute hand not being lumed for its entire length. It tends to blend in with the hour markers. Maybe you can mention this to the folks at MIDO :🙂 Thanks for another well done and informative video. You are the best!
My new favorite everyday watch!
Picked up a Mido multifort black pvd power reserve this year with the 1197(2897) movement. It is so accurate! Looking to add the ocean star gmt in the near future. The bezel is a bit of an odd choice. Is this the same movement as in the Radio hyperchrome automatic gmt?
Having a dive bezel on this gmt is actually a really cool feature that’s pretty difficult to find across the watch market. As a recreational diver, this configuration makes a ton of sense for taking a single watch on a dive trip anywhere in the world and still be able to track my home time zone without losing the timing bezel for diving.
It seems purpose built for the international diving vacation. I haven’t been able to find very many similar configurations outside of the ceramic omega seamaster GMT series. Awesome watch & great review!
For this review today i got this watch, amazing by tha way!! 🇨🇷
A GMT has been on my list to get eventually one day and this watch fits the bill. I probably won't get it any time soon but that might change if they get this watch just a little smaller to fit my 6.5 inch wrist
So cool with that nato.
I think it's a stunner to look at, and very affordable.
41mm-42mm would be best though
Nice watch. Perfect size.💪💪💪
Awesome watch this Mido!! But guys, check the Certina DS Action GMT Powermatic 80. I got the Coca-Cola version completely new for 840€, has the same movement and it looks like the same watch but without the bezel, highly recommended!!
Im looking for a GMT to add to my collection but unfortunately this Mido is a little bit large for my wrist. Teddy you should review the Bvlgari Aluminum GMT, everyone just talks about the Octo line and not a lot of people talks about the Aluminum line in general. Love your videos, greetings from Mexico!
Beautiful watch.
That bracelet looks identical to the new certina ds action diver one. As a smaller guy I’m hoping they incorporate this new bracelet with the 38mm ds action diver soon as I’m holding off getting that watch.
True. Very good watch.
I’ve bought from you and I can say confidently, though it was one of the best online purchase experiences (thanks to Dan on the phone answering my questions) I realize that I must have at least an extra thousand dollars lying around before I click on any of your videos 😋
Glad that Dan was able to help you out. He is a man! Thanks for watching and the support Rob!
@@TeddyBaldassarre Hey Teddy! Do you guys Ship out of US?
I’m new to watches so this might be a dumb question but what are the numbers on the dial representing? The 24, 2, 4 etc EDIT I didn’t realize the extra hand moved half as fast on a GMT so that makes a lot more sense
Teddy, considering picking one of these up! Is the bezel black or just a very dark blue on this edition? Thanks!
Thanks Teddy for this video. I'm really interested in this watch but I have a question. How to list Mido as premier brand ? Higher then Tissot ? Lower the Hamilton ?
Is a Hamilton Zulu Time or Tudor GMT really more worth it, If you think about later on, will it hold it value as good like Tudor or Hamilton.
Many Thanks,.
I have 2 mido ocean star.. and love it.. next target mido ocean star gmt and ocean star chrono
Have the black dial version and love it, but the new reduced Hodinkee collab is a game changer.
Nice dual-timer, with a great fidget spinner (the jumping hour hand)..
GMT rehaut + 60min dive bezel is my absolute favorite GMT setup. It's hard to find. Keeps the dive ability and having a true GMT functionality = way more usable than three timezone tracking.
I own an océano star tribute in black. I like the brand but by far the Best feature is the 60 minutos bezel. Very few gmt has a diver bezel.
omg. REALLY wish they’d re-release the 5907!! so sick
This versus the Citizen series 8 GMT, which one would you choose over the other?😅
So close to perfection. They just missed the date window framing. Still love it.
Yes
I have almost made my mind on the black one, if so, tomorrow will be the day!!!
Teddy. I am a fan of MIDO. Can you review the BARONCELLI CHRONOGRAPH MOONPHASE from MIDO? Thank you and as always your videos are great!
The Pepsi colors is a game changer
Really cool, crazy value, shame it’s so big. Mido is underrated!
I have been looking at Mido for a while as my next purchase next month I am going back to Thailand and will bye a Mido at Heathrow Airport, the only thing is which one.
This is a tempting offering, if I already haven't purchased a Seiko Presage sharp edge GMT, which is also a true GMT, I may have bit on this. It is a very handsome watch. I just wish it was a little smaller at maybe 39 - 42mm max.
It would have been nice if they would have added lume to the ceramic bezel.
Good looking watch and really a bargain for the price 👌🏻
The biggest question is! Will the new steel bracelet fit the older blue and orange Mido GMT?
6:25 I'm glad Mido put a proper dive bezel (60 minute count-up) on this watch. I never understood the 24-hour bezel on GMT divers. These watches already track two time zones, why a 3rd one, and why lose a key feature of a dive watch to do so?
Speaking of the bezel, what color is it? It looks black in this video, but on-line photos make it look like the same blue as the dial.
Love the size (small-wristed haters gonna hate), hate the 3Hz beat rate, even if I love the rest of the movement at this price.
7:15 Love how Mido included a NATO but hate that it isn't two-piece. It covers the time zone caseback engraving and adds thickness. Mido has used funny lugs on other watches (e.g. 22mm lugs with 24mm spring bars on the Ocean Star 600), will a normal two-piece NATO fit here? I noticed the included NATO uses quick-release spring bars, what about the bracelet?
The diver's bezel is a no go for me. Put a proper 24 hour bezel on this and I would add one to my collection in a heartbeat.
Kinda like the divers bezel on it!
Good watch with solid movement but the case diameter of 44mm is very big for my wrist.
Can you do or do you have a video on watch functionality and how to actually use them? For example in one video you say how a tachometer works and how you can use it in watch form. But I have no idea how to use a GMT in day-to-day or sport/specific uses. Comprehensive video would be amazing.
Nice watch.
I have one and it is just unbeatable in terms of price performance ratio😉
I have the blue one and bought the steel bracelet separate. It's an incredible gmt and wears great on my 6.7 wrist. Wears like my 42mm watches all day.
