You seem to be the best in researching your subject. You keep things moving quickly and pack a lot of info into the review. Thanks for your great reviews, Teddy.
As an airline pilot that flies all over the globe the GMT complication is far and away my favorite. And it wasn't until I acquired one of my grail pieces, a Breitling Chronomat GMT, that I understood what you meant by "true GMT." There are so many appealing choices in your list, from the Glycine Airman with its rich heritage to the Sea Wolf GMT which is significant to me as I received a Sea Wolf as a gift on my 14th birthday. It is still in my collection. I'm leaning toward picking up one of those Ocean Star GMTs but I wish I could get them all! Thanks Teddy!
I have the Grand Seiko SBGE249 “Blizzard” and love it that the GMT hand, the power reserve indicator, and the sweep seconds hands are blued, while the hour and minute hands are not, which really helps the readability. The watch is also a Spring Drive. A pretty complete package for just under 6K.
My favorite, and not readily available GS GMT did not qualify for the list due to its 9F Quartz movement, but to me the most attractive option is hands down, the SBGN017.
Thanks for the generous replies😄. When I bought my “Blizzard”, Timeless offered, for $200, a $400 Magatoo navy alligator strap that was specifically made for this model so there is no gap between the case and the strap. It has become my choice to wear with the watch. I wish I could say I was savvy. I just got lucky🍀.
Thank you for your great comments on the Glycine Airman. For years I've been saying that this is the most under appreciated classic icon in the watch world, at least with regard to pilots watches. In an article I wrote on the 10 most iconic pilots watches of all time, the Airman comes in at no. 5. As background, I'm a retired military, corporate and airline pilot with almost 50 years experience. I wore my Pepsi GMT 16750 for 38 years, and picked the Airman Base 22 to replace it as my daily driver. My retirement watch is a Rolasor Sky Dweller. GMTs are also my favorite complication.
I have nowhere near the experience that you do, but I was Air Force, aircrew, for 6 years. It was essential, as you know, to have a good GMT watch strapped to our wrist. Military didn't exactly afford a large budget for a watch, even a Rolex back in the late '60s, arguably. So the Glycine definitely was within our ballpark. I picked up a newer version of few years ago. Love it.
I bought my Zodiac Aerospace GMT on May 1st of 1969 for about fifty dollars from the ships store on the USS Wright. Even after a long and sometimes hard life, it still looks pretty good and keeps time just fine. I had it serviced for the second time about two months ago, and wore it most all afternoon today. It is the first item of real value that I ever bought, and is my most prized possession.
The most comprehensive review of GMTs I’ve seen. I recently added the Sinn 105 UTC in white and the limited edition Oris Rega GMT, a real stunner in gunmetal with red accents. Both have excellent legibility. Another great job, Teddy. Cheers!
Man, I hope Omega releases a no date version of the planet ocean sooner than later. I really dig the 3,6,9,12 layout, but the chopped out 3 really throws off the symmetry.
They’re all great options, but for me it stops at the Tudor BB GMT. Love the historic look, the impeccable finish detail and how it stands high on the wrist. 10/10
My personal favorite is the Frederique Constant Highlife GMT Art Deco. (FC308X3H5/6) Beautiful numerals and really classic styling. Also quite affordable , around 750 to 1500 euro.
It is a pretty watch. but there is no lume on pointers and you can barely see the dial with dim lighting or at night or even in the daytime when there is poor sunlight. What a shame, they charge all this money and they don't even bother to install some basic lume.
@@lambroshilas8080 I can see exceptionally well in low light to dark conditions so that doesn't bother me too much, but some lume would be nice asthetically.
Best bang for the buck IMO. Perrelet Seacraft GMT. The most comfortable bracelet I ever owned as well, I live in the mountains, and this watch has gone from -40 below to 100 degrees and not skipping a beat! Truly a awesome tool watch.
Many of us Air Force flight crew members wore the Glycine in the late '60s and early '70s. It was not issued by the military and we could pick them up at the basic exchange. But we all wore them, regardless of being issued the generic Timex or whatever black-faced watch that the Air Force issued that time.
@@vunguyenchannel actually, that is a great question. We were issued watches, as flight crew. Many manufacturers stepped up to produce them, including Timex. It did not say the brand on the watch, but one could tell, generally, who made it. It was a basic watch. It featured a black face, that could hack time and had indices and hands that would glow in the dark. The crystal was not a very good quality and would scratch easily. Additionally, there was no 24-hour complication on it. With the Glycine, you have a 24-hour watch that could tell time in three different time zones. We typically set that for GMT, local time in the time zone that we were flying out of, our home base. The military issued watch had none of those capabilities.
In the age of cloud-based architectures, software engineers deal with machines running in almost every timezone. Immediately knowing the time in UTC during an impactful event has become immensely handy. Thats what brought me to this video.
The Omega Cookies and Cream GMT is on my to-buy list. It’ll compete with an Oris Aquis GMT, which is my most frequently worn watch. Just such a useful complication to have - especially when working across time zones every day.
I tried on an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT in black ceramic at the Omega boutique here in Nashville, what a stunning watch! Thank you for including some larger options in this video! Half of these are unfortunately far too small for me, even though awesome choices.
@@sdean4816 I debated between the 39 and the 42. If they had made the 39 in Titanium that is what I wanted. Titanium won out in the end. I don't regret it at all. For the price, they are both incredible watches.
I've seen the PO GMT quoted as 17mm thicc. In any case (pun intended), we have to consider the co-axial escapement is not as thin as a swiss-lever, plus the domed sapphire and see-through caseback probably add 2-3 mm in total. But at this point the identity of the Planet Ocean line is cemented: POs are not thin watches and they probably shouldn't change that.
The PO line in general is a little long in the tooth. I’m an Omega fanboy but readily admit that the GMT genre is where Omega seems to really lack punching power. The Oreo bothers me at the 9 and 18 on the bezel, I don’t like the transition of black/white.
@@slanealb I love Omega too, and I'm alright with POs being thicc like this, but Omega should really go all out on the WR specs. Omega should also reevaluate its GMT and worldtimer designs. They can do much better.
I just got the Sharp Edge SPB221 (black) a few weeks ago and it is awesome. In person, it definitely seems larger than it is (IMO). That could be because it's my biggest watch but, I think the crazy/massive wrist presence as well as the small bezel make it seem large. It also plays with light really, really well. It looks good in all situations, but really excels when it's in daylight. Plus, it's a "true" GMT.
I also have the spb221, I've had mine for about 6 weeks, absolutely beautiful watch, it's running at ‐2 seconds a day. I have a 17cm wrist and it wears great 👍
Damn Christopher Ward C63 GMT would have been a good addition to this list IMO. Any way you could cover that in some other video? I would like to see a top 10 white dial watches. They are quite rare and look stunning. CW would fit there quite well too. Thanks for the great video though!
Another great option from an historic, reputable, and independent brand is the Squale 30 Atmos GMT. It has a ceramic unidirectional bezel, sapphire glass, ETA 2893-2 movement, 30 ATM (300 m) water resistance, signed screw-down crown and one of my favorite ss bracelets! $800 on Gnomon and they have a bunch of different colors. Some have applied numerals as well. Haven't taken it off for more than a day since I got it a month ago!
Just stop with your ridiculous "low base weight" obsession. Your amateur hiking is not going to be affected in the slightest by a few grams or ounces extra on your wrist. First, you're a fool for wanting to take a Rolex hiking, second the weight savings of a "lighter" Rolex over a heavier one is less than having an extra protein bar for lunch or being slightly constipated. Honestly, if you shaved that scraggly beard and moppet hair on your head you'd save more weight. If you truly believed in low base weight, you wouldn't take a watch with you at all.
I own my grandpa's old zodiac Aerospace GMT from around 1964 when he joined the Navy. not only do I love the watch for the family value, but it's also just a really nice watch.
I'm just catching up on increasing my knowledge about watches thanks to Mr Baldassarre, tones of helpful videos, and at 64 years old I had no idea I could become a watch nerd! I plan on starting small and will invest $2000 over the next 2 years
I'm surprised you didn't think of Ball watches because what you get for the money is unbeatable, also the night time visibility makes it a wonderful travel watch. BALL Roadmaster Pilot GMT if you want to change the hour hand. BALL Roadmaster Marine GMT if you want to change the GMT hand. Both 40mm
I bought a whale shark and the dial finish is a lot more subtle in real life than it is under a macro lens but the colour mix makes it stand out. It's extremely comfortable to wear and feels beautifully made. I really think Oris are on the ascendancy. I just hope they keep a pricing structure that allows people like me to keep buying their watches.
Man, I love that Zodiac GMT with the lime green. Alas, it's out of my current price range, so I'll have to admire it from afar. Another I have my eye on is the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. I'm hoping they'll have a discount code soon so I can pick that one up at a good price.
You got to admit, that zodiac is stunningly beautiful. I wonder if any of the knock-off brands have made a copy. Why spend $1,500 on one watch when I can get seven or eight watches for that price, and most of them very decent.
As much as I hate Rolex but I must admit the GMT Master is really the perfect GMT watch. Sturdy build, great proportions and that Pepsi insert is so iconic. Oh well, I’ll get in line then.
I am wearing my Oris Aquis GMT blue dial. Bought it by accident went to buy an Oris Aquis green dial but had to wait a couple of weeks for it I saw the GMT with such a beautiful dial I fell in love with it,for only $300 more couldn't resist.
A very important point to note is that any watch using the ETA C07.661 movement, such as the Tissot mentioned at the start, are “true” (ugh hate that term) or “traveller’ GMTs. This movement is relatively new and has the potential to revolutionise the GMT market given the prices of the watches using this movement so far have been in the $1k-$2k price range, which was previously unheard of. So far mainly used by Tissot, Certina and Mido (Eg the Ocean Star GMT which was also mentioned), the major problem is that it has only been used in watches 42mm-45mm with 49mm+ lug to lug. As soon as this movement starts to be used in watches that are 38mm-41mm, expect the enthusiast watch market to really pay attention. There are no technological reasons why it has only been used in large watches as the movement is identical in width to the ETA 2824-2 upon which it is based at 25.6mm (about an inch). So far, the only reason I can think of for Swatch group limiting the use of this movement is that the coveted feature it provides could result in them cannibalising the market for the much more expensive GMT watches you would traditionally have to buy for this functionality.
A feature on GMT watches I find useful (and miss when a set) is a different color and style GMT hand. It is irritating to glance at your watch and misunderstand the time because I mistook the GMT hand for the minute hand. Good vid. Keep at it!
Great overview! Love the look of that Zodiac Sea Wolf with the lime green on the bezel. GMT my favourite also for tracking UTC time for ham radio. My “go tos“: GMT Master II BLNR 126710 for work/dress up/down and Explorer II 216570 w shorts & sneakers 😎🙏
I have the Explorer II Polar dial in the older 38 mm format. It is a great watch, but I have difficulty confusing the GMT hand from the minutes hand in low/no light situations. The watch is tough, as you say; it is my "daily driver." --Old Guy
I happened to see a Seiko Kinetic GMT Sun033p1 on Amazon. It was a return, with no box or instruction book: $125 and IIRC free shipping. I jumped for it. The same watch is now listed on eBay for $426. After about two years, it quit; so I sent it to a Seiko overhaul center in California for about another $120, including shipping both ways. So I'm still out only a little more than half the price of a new one; and _far_ less than any of those listed here. Since the overhaul (about one year), it has performed flawlessly and accurately, although for some reason the battery/capacitor won't charge above the "four-month" level; but I can live with that. Wish I'd kept my old Navigator Timer mechanical from 1970: they're running about $1,800 on eBay.
Hey Teddy! I just wanted to point out that the first watch you discussed, the Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles has the exact same movement as the Mido, also a “true” GMT!
I just picked up a Glycine Airman GL00195 for $500.00 on EBay. It’s a far cry from its first iteration in the 50s. It’s all black at a whopping 46mm. When I first saw it in the flesh, I was a little overwhelmed by its size, but it wears comfortably & is my only “Stealth” timepiece!
I would love to see a head-to-head comparison between a Christopher Ward Sealander C63 GMT and that Seiko Presage Sharp Edge GMT. Like--is the Seiko really the couple of hundred dollars' worth better? That said, the Seiko has some fantastic dial colors. The Green Dial Seiko looks fantastic.
@@OuijTube I have the seiko gmt and a c65 gmt World timer, I would say the CW is just ahead on build quality and has a better bracelet and clasp, but the seiko has an in-house true gmt movement, so overall I think the extra cost for the seiko is justified..
Thank you for the video. I actually have the Seiko blue Cutting Edge that you discussed on the video. I do enjoy it. Yes I do really like the Rolex GMT Master 2 but try to get one. Rolex has terminated it's relationship with my local AD. I said I want a watch I can use now so I decided on the Seiko.
I've been wanting to add a GMT complication to my collection and the choices are numerous, to say the least. I appreciate your list of options here. I've liked the Oris Aquis GMT, but I'm not sold on the new Whaleshark design. It's certainly different, but I think I like the plain Aquis GMT for the time being. I've also had my eye on the Muhle Glashutte Terranaut, Ref# M13794LB. Thanks for this video!
This, was by far, was my favorite video you have posted! The picks were so good, the brands were unexpected. Classy watches I would love to call mine. Keep the great content coming.
Love my Glycine Airman. Mine has 12 hour dial with office GMT 4th hand. I think the original 24 hour dial is too busy, though I respect the 24 hour dial is the original design. When it comes into wrist rotation, it stays on for days. Have other GMTs, but the Airman is unique and really the first.
Most videos featuring GMTs at this price range put CW at the front, it’s nice to see a list without CW mentioned to be honest, it’s time for other brands to get some focus, it was starting to feel like CW was paying all the channels to review their watches. CW does have half the history that most of the brands mentioned here.
You have to include Grand Seiko quartz and mechanicl GMTs to complete this list. lso the watches are giving the Swiss a run for the finish and movrmrnt quality. SBGM221 is on my shopping list.
Good list indeed. But i would add Grand Seiko GMT models also. We all know, exceptional quality, not so big price. Would go somewhere before or after Tudor in this list. SBGE257 being my favourite model these days.
Since I know you're a Nomos fan, one watch that I love is the Nomos Glashutte Zurich World Time, a watch that's considered a GMT rather than a true world timer. The Omega PO GMT was also on my radar for years...Still is.
A quirky choice but the Damasko DK200 is a beautiful GMT with a superhard steel case in a genta-esque design. It has an in-house movement with silicon hairspring, free sprung balance, 2 way winding & ceramic bearings. It's a lot of horology tech for modest money.
Being a pilot, I think the BALL Roadmaster Pilot or Marine is the ultimate true GMT function. Just push a button instead of unscrewing the crown at every location. Best of all is the Lumes; hard to beat the tritium when waking up in a dark hotel room ;-) I have my eye on their Jet-Set model coming out as well.
Teddy, I'm a little surprised you didn't include the Monta Atlas GMT in your list given your readily apparent appreciation for the timepiece. Excellent video as always...
@@zillsburyy1 i have a thing for all horology. I'm a certified timepiece specialist of Fondation De La Haute Horlogerie. Seiko almost killed off the entire Swiss industry if it wasn't for the Swatch Group(SMH) successful defense with the Swatch brand. And Tissot was part of the SSIH which then merged together with ASUAG and became SMH under emergency protocol(Quartz crisis was enough to led the Swiss close to bankruptcy)arranged by the Swiss Government. So if you know about timepieces and horology then you will appreciate The Swatch Group because if it wasn't for them, all the other luxury Swiss brands you see today will die or be selling fashion clothing. also the night time visibility makes it a wonderful travel watch.
Great video. I've got the Glycine and love it.
Didn't read your Comments CascadiaEDC see above 🤣😂🤣
Really you can get 7 or 8 very decent watches for $1500 c'mon man.
I have the glycine airman and is wonderful watch!!!
I have to say... this is what a professional video looks like. Thank you for all the reviews!
Just purchased a marathon through your site. Keep up the great content.
Longines VHP GMT is a good option too
A very important point to note is that any watch using the ETA C07.661 movement, such as the Tissot mentioned at the start, are “true” (ugh hate that term) or “traveller’ GMTs.
Absolutely love the Sinn UTC! I will try to pick one up in polar white ... Thanks Teddy for giving these non-hype brands the visibility they deserve.
The Rolex Explorer II should be here ! It's beautiful(particularly the Polar dial), has a wonderful history and is super tough.
When I first saw it in the flesh, I was a little overwhelmed by its size, but it wears comfortably & is my only “Stealth” timepiece!
christopher ward gmt c63 is a great option for smaller wrists and with kinda affordable price range..
@@OuijTube agreed !
Great video on GMT’s 👍🏼
I think that the zodiac is absolutely gorgeous!
This, was by far, was my favorite video you have posted! The picks were so good, the brands were unexpected. Classy watches I would love to call mine. Keep the great content coming.
@8:47 That Seiko SPB221 looks great! It's very similar to my GS SBGE253 but at a very attractive price-point. Well done Seiko!!
Great list...I was lucky enough to purchase an Omega Seamaster GMT 50th Anniversary with the James Bond bracelet back in 2000 I think.
So pleased you mentioned the Glycine, so overlooked, I have it in the bronze option and it's awesome!
the rival of Mido is the Certina DS Action GMT (another true GMT). ;)
Nice review
Love my Glycine Airman. Mine has 12 hour dial with office GMT 4th hand. I think the original 24 hour dial is too busy, though I respect the 24 hour dial is the original design. When it comes into wrist rotation, it stays on for days. Have other GMTs, but the Airman is unique and really the first.
Ball makes some great GMT watches. You should cover few of them Teddy.
Great Video Teddy!! Eye opening!
Living in Western Australia, GMT watches are the last thing I need right now 🤣🤣
Hi As usual a great video. What about Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT ? What do you think of CW watches ?. Thanks
Most videos featuring GMTs at this price range put CW at the front, it’s nice to see a list without CW mentioned to be honest, it’s time for other brands to get some focus, it was starting to feel like CW was paying all the channels to review their watches. CW does have half the history that most of the brands mentioned here.
Tudor is very nice but the oris is the one for me, but wish they would do normal lugs so could have nato strap
The newest gran seiko gmt blue/green dials are up there too, you can keep track of three diff time zones
Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT BLUE-RED Ceramic
You have to include Grand Seiko quartz and mechanicl GMTs to complete this list. lso the watches are giving the Swiss a run for the finish and movrmrnt quality. SBGM221 is on my shopping list.
Thank you Teddy, great video, informative, and helpful.
Good list indeed. But i would add Grand Seiko GMT models also. We all know, exceptional quality, not so big price. Would go somewhere before or after Tudor in this list. SBGE257 being my favourite model these days.
Great video as always Teddy.
Thank you, my friend!
Love you´re proposals!! different price ranges but all stunning watches... Another great one is the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Venturer GMT
Since I know you're a Nomos fan, one watch that I love is the Nomos Glashutte Zurich World Time, a watch that's considered a GMT rather than a true world timer. The Omega PO GMT was also on my radar for years...Still is.
Once again a home run great content and tons of info. Love the inclusion of some near luxury pieces as well. Loads to consider. Thanks Teddy!
I absolutely adore my Omega PO Cookies and Cream GMT. I love it very deeply.
Teddy your the best . Very informative video. Thanks 🙏🏾🙏🏾
A quirky choice but the Damasko DK200 is a beautiful GMT with a superhard steel case in a genta-esque design. It has an in-house movement with silicon hairspring, free sprung balance, 2 way winding & ceramic bearings. It's a lot of horology tech for modest money.
1 min in and already walking over to my safe to get a GMT out. Great content TB.
Thanks for the great video Teddy. That Green Zodiac though.
Very helpful, I am owner of 2004 Omega GMT which working perfectly !
Teddy, I'm a little surprised you didn't include the Monta Atlas GMT in your list given your readily apparent appreciation for the timepiece.
Excellent video as always...
I love the Oris honestly. It is gorgeous. Do not have that kind of money to burn, but it is my favorite on this list for sure.
The Tudor is amazing
I saw the seiko presage gmt at Osaka last week and wow! I am saving for that watch! Its really nice
i got one glycine airman, really cool watch, loving it
I love the Oris watch texture, however, I don’t understand why the double row of 24 hour numbers….on the dial and on the bezel.
Great list! Wish one day you will take some time and review a Steinhart 🤓
THAT SEA MASTER OMEGA WAS SUPER NICE THEY ALL WERE COOL I AM LOOKING AT TAG HEUR PEPSIE GMT I KNOW THANKS TEDDY GREAT VIDEO FIRST TIME WATCHER
Can't beat Omega👍 that Glycine too.
glycine is like seiko and tissot. YUCK!
@@zillsburyy1 you know nothing about timepieces and the history then. Ashame
@@horologywatchmaking13 and you have a thing for shit watches
And Seiko although in the end they lost to their own game but they made history and must be respected.
Brands like Tissot and Swatch are highly respected by us Swiss people.
@@horologywatchmaking13 you sir, are clearly educated and knowledgeable with fine taste👍Ignore the Tommy because he obviously don't know watches...Sad that there are clueless people like this killing this hobby...
