I know this reply is a casual ten days late but I'm really glad somebody picked that up, especially considering the context in which we had to deploy The Blade of Frontiers
Something that's floated around in my mind a few times is playing a game like Disco Elysium completely blind, but changing the game language every ~thirty minutes and trying to describe the plot / my actions without any fucking clue what I'm actually doing. It'd be like the UA-cam equivalent of that moment in Interstellar where you bang on your walls screaming "DAVEY NO YOU'RE DOING EVERYTHING WRONG" while you gaze at the screen, helplessly in agony. That being said I'm still perpetually in combat against the Content Hydra™ where every time I finish a video another three enter pre-production never to see the light of day, so honestly I can't promise anything ever
Honestly, you just took an RPG and turned it into a puzzle game. Combat doesn’t exist, that’s a puzzle with initiative and positioning. SD isn’t a combatant, he’s a tactical nuke and the “tactic” is set to “maximized collateral”.
I would pay BIG MONEY for someone to take the time with the new mod support patch to make a single coherent mod that injects a shadow davey into your party at the start of the game without all this extra run around and other mods. It would be a supreme troll mod that would be absolutely glorious to try and play with.
I actually don't think it'd be all too hard to develop, ESPECIALLY with any newer tools that comes out. All things considered it just boils down to creating a summonable creature with the Madness AI and the appropriate stats / spells, and people have already done similar things already ala Necromancy revamps. However I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do ANYTHING with BG3's current tools (note that this video entered production literally several months ago), so I went with this approach instead :(
@@DaveyGunface Well patch 7 comes with the new modding tools and official support. So here's hoping one of the awesome fans around here who is skilled at such would be willing to christen us with such a glorious thing. Edit: Also you know for a fact there is something special about it actually being a Shadow Davey rather than some other mod content.
The official tools do not allow PC Mod makers to do anything they couldn’t do before, and in fact have more limitations (because they are not Script Extender Compatible)
something about honor mode is that if you die, you can choose to reload your save anyway, but it'll count it as a custom difficulty (meaning you wont get the achievement or dice) but will still retain all of the difficult parts about honor mode such as legendary actions. This means that you could have done this on honor mode and just died immediately so that you gain the ability to reload and save at will, effectively just making the run objectively harder.
Wait, that’s how it works??? I would’ve saved so much time, because I was curious what honor mode was like in the difficulty of fights, but thought I’d have to make a lot of saves to get past act 1- I’m used to Wolf Heart Barbarian, and trying to get Karlach early screwed me so hard
You've convinced me to put a very peculiar character in my next DND campaign. A cleric of the god of destruction who just wants to see the world burn, but not too much because then there'd just be ash. He wants to turn the world into his personal everburning pyre, killing, then healing, only to kill again.
I've always enjoyed those characters / plotlines, if you ever revisit that idea in a future campaign that exact concept perfectly fits for an all-consuming enemy. They need the "food" to devour so they grow ever stronger, but they can't run out of food so they have to refrain from killing everything, even if they're already powerful enough to usher in the apocalypse. It quickly becomes this nearly omnipresent entity that incites a deep sense of dread and paranoia to those 'fortunate' enough to live. "You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it"
This feels very much like a Dark Souls plot, for that god seems like the worst god in terms of Dark Souls metaphysics. The Age of Fire was made by someone who feared death and did not know what was unleashed. Imagine a god doing that because they want to because eternal flame and suffering is fun to them.
You mentioned the example of another final boss overtaking the previous one, and funny enough I feel like that's what happened anyways. You became far more powerful than Shadow Davey could EVER be, and ended up becoming the murderhobo yourself. And I think that's beautiful
One of my favorite moments was in my first run, Lazel got handed the asteral sword all ceremoniously, only for me to instantly regret making her a polearm build, and thus having no use for it.
It's ok Davey, I'd get lost in those vantablack eyes too Alongside my everything as I'm atomized by the concentrated power of the sun from SD's Shenanigans™
During the initial tests of this run I had what I can only call an Astarion Outbreak where I had dozens of AI controlled, Level 1 Astarions just charging into everything. If I had a hyperbolic time chamber I would totally make "How many Rats / Astarions / Shovels / Whatever do you need to beat Baldurs Gate 3?" but unfortunately I am a mortal man
PATHFINDER WOTR MENTIONED!!!! My favorite game of all time and yes unfair sucks ass lol At least it's what it says on the tin, a lot of RPGs easy normal and hard mode translate to plays itself, really easy and easy Also in some older patch unfair was bugged and added all changes TWICE including doubling the damage so the first dungeon had a motherfucker that had like 32 AC and dealt 110 damage and attacked twice a round You can still play it with the toybox mod, it's called brutal unfair and it's the LEAST FUN I HAD IN YEARS
Yeah, Wrath of the Righteous is a very hard recommend because it's basically equivalent to ~three Baldur's Gate 3's in a trench coat so the learning curve starts off with an immediate spike into the stratosphere, but as somebody who finds a lot of enjoyment in building parties it's easily the most fun I've ever had in a CRPG and I immensely enjoy the fact that it feels satisfying both mechanically and narratively to conquer despite insurmountable odds.
In theory it wouldn't actually be TOO difficult, there are so many ways to buff cantrips and spells in this game that you could probably end the run off with some whacky build that OTK's the final boss with pipes, but there are so many BG3 Challenge Runs on UA-cam that I'd be perpetually terrified of some one finishing the pipe run before me and then I'd wither away into nothingness
@@DaveyGunface tbh i wouldn't care too much cuz i just find your stuff enjoyable regardless, as long as you're making stuff you're passionate about. but, yeah, don't sweat it if you already have a dozen other projects stressing you out.
Ya know, Shadow Davy seems pretty reasonable. At the same time though, this is coming from someone who's first run was Dark Urge with the rule of once I see someone I have to kill them, unless they are an animal, a kid, a plant, or Asterion (and sadly the emperor), and I absolutely horrified the friend who recommended me the game after I told them what I did to the ones who wanted Karlac dead, and then Karlac. So, I might be slightly biased.
Granted will say there was a lot of weird stuff happening that run. As I killed all the Emerald Grove, then went for the Goblin Camp and killed everyone there. But I spared Halsin initially as was a bear at the time, then my friend talked me into sparing him saying he would show up later after seeing what I did and try to kill me. So I let him live, and then he just kinda, fucked off. He literally disappeared from the map and never showed up again. My head cannon is he just went out and saw the absolute destruction everywhere, and it just broke him. So I'm pretty satisfied with that.
Fun fact: the labyrinth puzzle and that god damned mind connecting puzzle are insanely annoying on controller because you can only move your camera independently from your character if you use jump, and then you have to remember to cancel it, or you might actually jump, and usually into a pit
What the shit I already hated the Mind Puzzle and resorted to just screenshotting the answer and memorizing it because I found it way too annoying to complete (first time is fun, every subsequent run is tedious). I can't imagine having that extra factor on top of it, it was already annoying that I could misclick and lose a lot of time because it deactivates the puzzle by going away, but this is beyond insane. The buff is not worth it
Shadow Davey returns. Hopefully there are no fatman shells Also Bug sure did strike down the terrible tyrant or whatever he's called, I've never played BG3
I have watched this video in three attempts. Definitely to give you more watch time for the algorithm, and not because I repeatedly fell asleep because your voice is very relaxing.
I appreciate it captain! Loads of people tell me that they fall asleep to my videos and they always say that cautiously, like "Don't be insulted, but--", but honestly I think it's an immensely positive compliment. I'm honored to be dedicated second-monitor content
Look I've finished four separate BG3 playthroughs and I've had yet another two-to-four that got well into Act One and I've never failed any of Us' associated checks despite the fact they're much more difficult compared to other early game rolls. I figured the developers heavily skewed the odds in your favor as an introduction to skill checks which makes complete sense, BG3 is actually extremely good at introducing newer players to what is an intimidating genre, and although I still 100% believe that's the case I never knew if you could actually *fail* the check and I had to verify :P
Finally, some NB representation in the form of Shadow Davey! But for real, I've only watched the first 12 minutes and I'm really excited for the video. I definitely like your style of narration and your humor! 😄
This is like playing D&D with your friends but one of them basically bullies the DM into doing what he wants and constantly and intentionally mucks with whatever the party's doing because his character is "chaotic evil", but you can't kick him out because you feel bad for him.
i've failed just about every roll possible to fail at least once. including saving Us and headbutting astarion. as an angry barbarian durge no less. it was kind of pathetic tbh.
this is by far the most cursed playthru I have ever seen and it's (almost) entirely because of your decisions be it in or out of the game and I absolutely fucking love it
I was watching the beginning of a playthrough of complete noob to DnD & this type of game. They rolled a nat 1 on their 1st ever check investigating the pool, then again freeing the brain & AGAIN on the wisdom illithid check to open Shart's pod (which requires a 2 to pass!) It was unbelieveable! I felt so bad for them coz they were terrified every subsequent roll, but it was HILARIOUS. This game is wild lol.
Meerna seems to be a glitch on your part. She's around just fine if you kill Nere without letting the cutscene play out, but since she seems like she's supposed to die since you can't "legitimately" stop him from killing her makes her seem like an afterthought
So... let me get this straight: the endgame of this was... beating the game by letting it... play itself? Wow, people have finally beaten the game by just looking at it
24:27 I was going to say thats actually Bhaal, the Bhaalspawn, Durge, and whatever fucked up monsters he's spawned this week (fun fact, the Dark Urge is the nth great uncle to the owlbear cub), but Shadow Davey is probably Bhaal himself, somehow. Which means they are actually the Baldur's Gate 3, since the Dead Three are actually the gods Bhaal, Mykrul, and Bane. 2:20:47 How is he so light? I weigh 15-20 pounds more than him, am quite a bit shorter, and only moderately fat. Are his bones hollow?
3:06 i failed this check on my first ever playthrough. On my first ever roll. I felt like a failure reloading my save 2 minutes into the game to know what happens when you succeed. I had to reload twice. You're just lucky
1:22:13 erm... if githyanki so evil, then why cute? 🤨 That whole fiasco with Gale was crazy lmao. This is a hilarious exercise in misery so far and your narration is very funny (I didn't realize it was 4 hours long when I first clicked on it...)
56:52 this… sounds wrong, like I didn’t know davey was even capable of sounding this…energetic? cheery? I’m not even making a “davey sounds depressed” joke, I think he’s got a good dry narrator type voice, but that sounded so weird, I thought it was a clip from something.
Something I do for pretty much every video is record very specific footage while editing so that whatever is shown on screen matches with what I'm talking about, a general pet peeve of mine that I think is fairly common is when a creator is talking about how interesting something is and instead of highlighting that with in-game footage, it's just completely irrelevant background footage that has been playing for minutes. It really tunes you out and it's generally not a fun time for anyone
with a certain editing style and some story line this would be a movie worthy serie something like yuta from jujutsu kaisen having a body hunted by a spirit that harms everyone around
So the mod I think he is using (companion ai) is supposed to allow you to turn it off. I played with it back in patch 1, and… it did not work. I ended up with Karlach being permanently uncontrollable and she kept pushing and throwing the rest of us. I had to uninstall the mod and when I tried to reinstall it she was still completely insane. It was hilarious until she shoved Astarion into a pit during the final boss and he died instantly.
Honestly, I was kinda hoping that Shadow Davey would do more more than just exist in the last act. It was so fun and chaotic to have them run around killing everything in stupid ways but it just ended up turning into "How badly does BG3 allow you to break the balance via endgame items"
That's just an Act 3 thing in general though, assuming you made it there with a vaguely competent party or build you will completely obliterate everything the game throws at you and there really wasn't a way to balance Shadow to be even more lethal without it just being an unceremonious victory lap or mandatory cheese-fest. I enjoyed the Madness approach because it fits well thematically and it made a lot of traditionally steamroll-y encounters actually difficult
On the topic of 3:10 I actually failed the will check to open the pod due to my character having a -1 will. The game bugged out and I couldn't get shadowhart lmao
Take all the time you need to handle your personal issues. While you’re UA-cam is incredibly enjoyable you should never feel obligated to UA-cam when you’re real life is more pressing. I really hope 2025 treats you far far better than this year has
that first check I actually fail the roll about 40% of the time. I regularly have to go back with Laezel to get Us or sometimes even have Shadowheart go all the way back to try.
I didn't forget, I mean I don't know if I really *could* forget, but my point is that for what was realistically built up to be a massive plot-altering choice, the worst case scenario for gaining a fuck ton of power is POTENTIALLY being forced into gaining even more power, alongside a few temporary cosmetic differences (that you honestly may not even notice depending on your gear) and a few companions going "ew yucky" with no real backlash or consequences isn't exactly game ending.
So, FYI, the black abyss portrait thing was something I encountered a while ago (two patches, I think?), and did a LOT of experimentation to figure out. And, it's tied to leveling up characters in dark areas. Essentially, if the area was too shaded or obscured, the game applied a shadow effect to the portrait that would last until the next time the character leveled up. Only way to remove it would be to level up the character in a more brightly lit area. If they're at max level? Respec them. Annoying as heck, normally.
That's usually the case, from what I know the game actually takes a picture of the characters for their in-game portraits (hence why it changes with armor) and sometimes the game really messes it up. Like you get Minthara or Lae'zel looking like they just woke up from a Zoom call, like they're very far away from the camera, have no emotion at all in their portraits, and their background takes up way too much of the shots space, but this one is just because the skeleton wanted to be abyssal and I respect that
I actually rather enjoy giving any other party members (that aren't friend's characters or otherwise) AI control, often they will surprise me with things I didn't think could be done or never really thought about! Can't tell you how many times I've been in this "How am I gonna get out of this situation?" for the AI to pull something random I didn't expect... Or they teleport a short distance, shout something at the enemy and leave me to my demise! Granted things break if you have your character AI controlled, but It'd probably be an interesting run doing something like having your other party members, be them custom or Origin, be AI controlled with say...not so "optimal" builds, see what the AI can pull out of it's magic hat so to speak!
I've always been an enthusiast for having the option to have A.I. automated party members, 'Real Time With Pause' games ala the older Baldur's Gates, Pillars of Eternity or Wrath of the Righteous have them and they're decent enough at the game where you can clear trash fights without thinking, but not overpowered enough where the game will literally play itself so you'll likely have to take control during critical fights. I think that's a really good compromise, especially if you can readily switch between the two modes That being said Final Fantasy 12's Gambit system still hasn't been implemented into many (if really any?) AAA RPG's since it's release and that deeply saddens me. I'm not even a big Final Fantasy person but holy shit I wish more games blatantly ripped it off
I considered it, but I think seven levels for it is a little bit much. At that level it's directly competing against Paladin, and although Rogue / Monk have access to some incredible tools that Paladin doesn't (ala Cunning Actions or Step of the Wind, Uncanny Dodge, Deflect Missiles, etc), it's pretty damn hard to beat permanent resistance from ALL spells and bonuses to saving throws equals to your charisma modifier. For the late game I think 7 Rogue 5 Fighter could definitely work out, especially so if we had access to the Shattered Flail, but I think 12 Fighter is perfect with the Sword of Chaos
I think the conversation went something like "Hey Grant, do you want to voice over God in my newest real quick?" and it was an immediate success. I am very thankful for the assistance
I'd really recommend it, I'm sure it's obvious by the fact I willingly made a nearly four hour video on it and have mentioned outright that I've beaten the game a few times (which I RARELY do, especially with such long games) but I think it's an incredible experience that will likely result in fantastic industry standards going forward
making wyll cleric of tiamat is pretty ironic given his backstory
I know this reply is a casual ten days late but I'm really glad somebody picked that up, especially considering the context in which we had to deploy The Blade of Frontiers

he needs to be able to fly, like birds, he has hollow bones.
I have failed the US check as many times as succeeding.
I failed 3 playthroughs in a row 😭
god damn, fanes really lost himself ever since he had to kill his only remaining family
3:06 i failed this check on my first ever playthrough. On my first ever roll. I felt like a failure reloading my save 2 minutes into the game to know what happens when you succeed. I had to reload twice.
You're just lucky
1:22:13 erm... if githyanki so evil, then why cute? 🤨
That whole fiasco with Gale was crazy lmao. This is a hilarious exercise in misery so far and your narration is very funny (I didn't realize it was 4 hours long when I first clicked on it...)
You can in fact fail the save to get Us out of the thrall. Rolled two fails on my Tav and Shadowheart and had to get Lae'zel to do it for us
Very glad to have saved this for a special day before the storm comes. Thank you for giving me motivation to draw more
1:54:20 "in a sarcastic tone". Davey i love you but your tone has not changed once in the past 5 challenge runs.
1:01:17 Doing WHAT to Shovel??!! 🤨🤨🤨
Great video. Really appreciate the work you put into it. Let your indomitable human spirit onwards
That painting that Oskar gives you is actually magic and will regularly change and rotate through all your companions and your character.
3:49 Friend! Protect friend!
56:52 this… sounds wrong, like I didn’t know davey was even capable of sounding this…energetic? cheery? I’m not even making a “davey sounds depressed” joke, I think he’s got a good dry narrator type voice, but that sounded so weird, I thought it was a clip from something.
“KITTY! 🧠”
Your narration style reminds me of Mitten Squad, whose videos I loved and still rewatch. Just found your channel, really enjoying your content
47:35 you are literally Galaxtus and the Silver Surfer. Just an omen for things to come while destruction is left to follow
Baldurs Gate 3 but my sleep paralysis demon stalks me.
I love how you got Grant to voice that for you
You could switch to turn based mode and mash through turns until SD decides he has had enough concentration
Unfortunately due to the environmental turns when using turn based mode, it's a lot slower than actually just going AFK
You can fail the opening check. Source: it just happened to me
what new games will shadow davey infect? the world quakes in terror
They are currently on standby in Morrowind, which is a horrific thing to even consider
Yay, shadow davey! She's back!
"No reloads"
"Anyways, lemme reload to try and fail this check!"
You sound like Paul from mitten squad
with a certain editing style and some story line this would be a movie worthy serie
something like yuta from jujutsu kaisen having a body hunted by a spirit that harms everyone around
Good seeing you uploading again, Davey.
If a Dark Justiciar tries to steal my squishmallows, I'll do things to them that'll get me demonetized!
It certainly is a video game.
I haven't seen this level of SD related savagery since Jon the Narrator. Poor bastard.
Great video!
Wow, he's trying to beat the game with Wyll? What a masochist.
I absolutely love your videos.
On the topic of 3:10 I actually failed the will check to open the pod due to my character having a -1 will. The game bugged out and I couldn't get shadowhart lmao
i have definitely failed that opening check plenty of times LOL
holy shit the video is out
Davey Gunface? Doing a BG3 challenge? Like dream come true.
Take all the time you need to handle your personal issues. While you’re UA-cam is incredibly enjoyable you should never feel obligated to UA-cam when you’re real life is more pressing. I really hope 2025 treats you far far better than this year has
Ive been playing act 1 in reverse order for the entire time. I always go to the underdark first.
that first check I actually fail the roll about 40% of the time. I regularly have to go back with Laezel to get Us or sometimes even have Shadowheart go all the way back to try.
i think you forgot that becoming half illithid causes you to have black veins
I didn't forget, I mean I don't know if I really *could* forget, but my point is that for what was realistically built up to be a massive plot-altering choice, the worst case scenario for gaining a fuck ton of power is POTENTIALLY being forced into gaining even more power, alongside a few temporary cosmetic differences (that you honestly may not even notice depending on your gear) and a few companions going "ew yucky" with no real backlash or consequences isn't exactly game ending.
a Delta IV Heavy could barely lift Shadow Davey to LEO
Meerna doesn't actually disappear. Her corpse is just pretty much invisible under lava.
Her existence is to be a character who nere kills to emphasise how evil he is.
Oh my god the gale shenanigans are incredible. You really right fucked that scenario up from the start.
Like you get Minthara or Lae'zel looking like they just woke up from a Zoom call, like they're very far away from the camera, have no emotion at all in their portraits, and their background takes up way too much of the shots space, but this one is just because the skeleton wanted to be abyssal and I respect that
i am in love with shadow davey
HE is BACK
I've never played or seen anything about bg3, im gonna watch this video now
Second coming of Mr Bones Wild Ride
I think that's a really good compromise, especially if you can readily switch between the two modes
That being said Final Fantasy 12's Gambit system still hasn't been implemented into many (if really any?) AAA RPG's since it's release and that deeply saddens me. I'm not even a big Final Fantasy person but holy shit I wish more games blatantly ripped it off
I like the difference between me and Davey with handling softlocks. I'd just find a console and remove the incapacitated effect manually.
With all the dex saves flying around I'm surprised you never went into Rogue or Monk for Evasion
Shadow Davey reminds me of 90% of DMPC's just a bit more PKing.
I have done the intro on the Nautiloid twice, and both times the check for Us failed. Well, that's that
You can steal from the House of Hope and leave as long as you don't take the Hammer or Your Contract, actually
Loved Grant as Professor Oak xD
I think the conversation went something like "Hey Grant, do you want to voice over God in my newest real quick?" and it was an immediate success. I am very thankful for the assistance
@@DaveyGunface nice ^^
Red alert series, but you use russian rocket artillery. They are literally Shadow Davey of strategy games.
Somehow watching this video in 1.2x speed feels a lot more natural.
I haven't finished BG3... but I also probably never will because adhd so I'm gonna enjoy the return of shadow davey, everyone's favourite
I really should actually finish BG3
I don't know any of this stuff dang
maybe I should not be watching this and instead play BG3
I'd really recommend it, I'm sure it's obvious by the fact I willingly made a nearly four hour video on it and have mentioned outright that I've beaten the game a few times (which I RARELY do, especially with such long games) but I think it's an incredible experience that will likely result in fantastic industry standards going forward
@@DaveyGunface I bought the game a while back and adhded off it around the start of chapter 2, I really should go back and try again
So basically real oldschool DnD experience
3:18:35 Bearbarian rage does it. My favorite :)
THREE HOURS?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
BEST SUNDAY OF MY LIFE
