I'm no math major, but I wanted to take a stab at the odds of the specific eden start at 1:55:56. Eden eden needs to start out with: one heart, at least one bomb, and the items ankh and glowing hourglass. I'm also only going to take a minimal start into consideration, meaning just what's needed to get a single eden token without unlocking any other characters or items. There would be way too many variables to take into with luck on what items are unlocked, therefore increasing the pool of items eden could start with and making calculating this pretty stupid. Health first. The game will try its best to start eden out with 3 full hearts, whether it be red hearts or soul hearts. No black, bone, rotten, or other form of heart can be generated, just red hearts. The game uses the formula "x = 0 to 3" to generate red hearts and for soul hearts will pick between "0 and (3-x)" soul hearts. If x ends up being 0, the game will grant at least 2 soul hearts. What we want is 1 red heart and 0 soul hearts. That means that the game must pick x=1 and the soul heart generator must pick 0. Out of the 8 possible combinations eden can start with: 3 full red hearts, 2 red hearts, one red heart, 2 red hearts and a soul heart, 1 red heart and 2 soul hearts, 2 soul hearts, a red heart and a soul heart, and 3 soul hearts, there is only 1 we want, being 1 red heart. That there is a 1/8 chance of happening (12.5%). Then there's the at least one bomb bit. Eden has a 1/3 chance to start with any pickup at all, and if that chance is granted it can then offer 1 key, 1 to 2 bombs, and 1 to 5 coins. Basically it needs to pass a 1/3 chance to even start with a pickup, followed by the 1/3 chance to start with 1 or 2 bombs (count doesn't matter it's just that we have bombs) so that's a 1/9 chance of happening (1/3 x 1/3.) If we want to go even further, we could also incorporate other means of getting a bomb if eden doesn't start with one. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head is the justice card (before anyone says anything, eden cannot start the 2 of clubs and both a card and a trinket, so no safety scissors+the tower.) There's also the chance of starting with a pill, which could be a bombs are keys pill. So from my understanding, there's a 1/3 chance of getting a trinket, 1/6 chance of getting a pill, 1/6 chance of getting a card, and a 1/3 chance of getting nothing. It would end up being (for the justice card): 1/6 chance for a card followed by a 24/25 chance that card is part of the global deck (TLDR either you spawn with your tarot cards or any card but that, like ? card or credit card), and a 1/22 chance that card be a justice card, which adds up to be a 2/275 or 0.7272727273% chance of happening. Alternatively, starting with a key and a bombs are key pill: 1/3 for starting with a pickup, 1/3 for starting with 1 key, 1/6 for starting with a pill, 13/46 for "Bombs are keys" to be in the pill pool, and a 1/13 for said pill to be bombs are keys, which ends up as a 1/2484 or 0.040257649% chance of happening. THEN there's the specific items that need to be obtained, which are glowing hourglass and ankh. There's an overall total of 719 unique passive and active items in repentance. 13 of these have the noeden item tag, meaning eden cannot start with these items (stuff like story pieces and recall and hold). There are then 706 items eden can start with IF this was a completed save file, but it's not, so we have to remove all of the unavailable items. From what I can find, there are only 464 items items eden can start with assuming no achievements are unlocks. This is impossible, however, as even if the game is played so optimally that no extra items or characters or anything are unlocked on the way to beating moms heart for the first time, there are still 4 items that are always unlocked. These items are cube of meat and ball of bandages (beating mom for the first time), monstro's tooth (beat chapter 1), and lil chubby (beat chapter 2). This raises our total number of items to 468 total items eden can start with in this scenario. We need ankh and glowing hourglass. Both of these events happening have a 1/468 chance of happening individually, but since these need to happen together it's a 1/219024 or 0.000456570969% chance of happening. Great. Here's where everything come's together. Where the hearts, bomb, AND item percent chances are all combined. Again I'm no math major, my highest degree in math education is college calculus and stats, so take my information as you will. There's the 1/8 chance for the 1 red heart, the 1/9 or 2/275 OR 1/2484 for the bomb, and 1/219024 chance for both ankh and glowing hourglass. First getting the chance for the bomb out of the way. The probability of an event where a bomb is possible to obtain through starting with one, the justice card ,OR key+ bombs are key pill would be 1/9 + 2/275 + 1/219024, or 0.1183884041 / 11.83884041%. This is combined with the 1/8 and the 1/219024 event, which is 1/8 x 0.1183884041 x 1/219024 which all adds up to be a whopping 6.75658855 x 10^(-8) or 0.0000000675658855 or 0.00000675658855% chance of you starting with hourglass and ankh, a method of obtaining a bomb, and only having one max HP. Hope that's everything, if someone finds an error let me know.
I actually lost my shit for like thirty seconds at the "Since these need to happen together it's a 0.000456570969 chance of happening. Great". Thank you so much for your dedication soldier, godspeed!
@@DaveyGunfacethe probability to hit it translates into 1 in 148003.684493, and if each eden reset takes half a second to do, it would take 20.55~ hours straight of resetting to hit full odds
"I even found a boiIed baby for the occasion." I'd like to point out that, not really playing or even knowing enough about tBoI to get like, super invested into this video, I sorta tuned out while using it as background audio while I did other things. I bring this up, because I nearly spat out my drink hearing that sentence.
Ngl, I watched the entire video as someone who has never played Issac, and at some point, I did get completely lost but still enjoyed hearing you try to explain what essentially sounded like the mind of a guy on every drug.
No you don't understand, if we defeat Ultra Tod as Tainted Forgotten we unlock a trinket that makes Isaac piss himself every 47 seconds which is vital for a run that can't fire tears
I remember when it was launched it had a fix orbit so big enemies would just get constant damage since they were bigger than that orbit. Then they fixed him to adapt to enemies and now i would say it is one of the worst items in all of the games
The greedmode part is painful. Especially given that there are sometimes keys just lying around in the shop, which is more likely than 3/64 Edit: also, Azazel has black hearts. He could get money for a guaranteed key
This and the fact you can also sometimes just get 5 cents from poops/fires and coins in the silver room, and also the fact that you can find keys/chests in the cure room (which is free for Azazel due to flight + fool card) the resets are for sure a bit longer but you'd have more chances at an item.
here's his reply to someone else who mentioned it so you don't have to go look for it: "That's true, honestly as superficial as this sounds I think the resets for the silver item room were a lot simpler because I could just lock my brain onto a few items, and if they spawned I could just immediately go up and check if a viable start was in there. My cave man brain didn't enjoy it, but it understood the task well enough to repeat it via muscle memory"
Actually genuinely fascinating challenge! Kinda curious how you feel this would play out in Fiend Folio, namely since it greatly expands the number of options that could be used for this challenge. I'm one of the devs btw! Always loved your vids, so this so far has been a treat!
Funny story: my save file does in fact have 71 Dark Esau kills. On the original patch of Repentance, Dark Esau could be damaged by Jacob and other enemies/fires and such, with an increasing amount of health per floor. Once he died, he would have a Mama Mega-style explosion and clear the room, turning Jacob into a ghost. The rest of the mechanics were identical but this got patched out because it was generally Not Very Fun. Turns out there's a time-specific file stat that could only be obtained on a specific patch.
the patch that made dark esau immmortal completely salvaged the character. as much as I enjoyed exploiting the explosion, it didn't outweigh the insane jank. we all experienced the spiked rocks of course, but if you rushed mega satan rather than letting dark esau spawn beforehand, mega satan would treat it like a fallen angel or super sin and sit there unable to be damaged until you killed the wretched thing, and this is only my personal hell from dark esau. from the 2nd worst character to among the best in the blink of an eye
To be honest I expected this video to be an attempt to play the game using the custom PAC1 F1ST seed, which is literally the secret pacifist game mode. But this is so much harder lol. Props.
15:30 you're way lucker than you thought, it's not 2 items out of a dozen, it's ~17 items out of HUNDREDS you picked up CHAOS which, puts EVERY item in EVERY pool, meaning that you were wayyyyy luckier than you thought here
I genuinely had text on screen for that but I deleted it because I wasn't sure at the time if Chaos affected the room you picked it up in, if so that's actually even more insane because it coincidentally rolled into a shop Zodiac item too
For anyone curious, the exact chances aren't 17(well, 15 since he couldn't get the items he had)/[item count -everythyng that already spawned], since instead of spawning a random item, chaos spawns an item from a random item pool, with based on the amount of items in that pool. The chance was probably even lower than 15/[item count -everything that already spawned]
The the azazel greed start, honestly you shoulda been looking at the shop instead. The shop has tons of layouts that contain a key, crawl space, or chest, and the shop might have an item that you want which you can get money for by either getting semi-lucky in the shop or waiting out all of the waves in the main room using flight then killing them all with a black heart. Also since you had flight, curse rooms would more often than not give you back more than you paid for
You know, the whole video until the reveal, I was thinking "Man, T Jacob would be great for this. Is he going to commit to suffering through Dipshit and Dumbshit just to unlock them?" The answer was yes. Power to you. On a side note, I love how Dark Esau just feels like some sort of outside force invading your game to wreak havoc. He feels like a creepypasta. "One day, I played my favorite character Jacob and Esau in The Binding of Isaac, but Jacob was sad and beat up, with Esau nowhere to be found! I completed a few rooms, when out of the firey pits of hell, ESAU AROSE! He said "(insert real life name here)! I remember your birthrights!" and attacked Jacob, turning him into the Lost without holy mantle, every Isaac gamer's nightmare! My next run, Jacob had no eyes, and bled hyper realistic blood!" You feel me?
"I remember your birthrights!" is an absolutely insane comment, I don't know how I feel about getting the reference, and I almost hate that it is almost completely correct both in game and biblically. Can't wait until Dark Esau escapes from the game and chases your mouse cursor, and if it ever makes contact with it it'll delete System 32
As someone who has enjoyed Isaac from flash to triple dead god, its incredible to see such an incredible display of ‘Isaac player’ in this challenge… tens to hundreds of hours of painful luck checks. Amazing video, hope to see more. Maybe a side video on which challenges are possible would be funny. Glad you made this content even if you weren’t sure it would be picked up by the algorithm!
This is one of the most impressive video game challenges I have ever seen, based purely on the level of patience and dedication needed to complete it. Godspeed Davey, may the odds be ever in your favor.
I love learning German words because it's either "Haha, this is just like the English Word but with some different vowels!", or "What is this unholy machination of a word? Why is this word eighteen letters long?? How are you supposed to pronounce this??? WHY DID YOU MAKE LIKE EIGHT WORDS INTO ONE WORD THAT CAN'T FIT ON THE SCREEN???" Actually you do also get the words that are very literal that I make fun of before realizing that English has tons of very literal words that I just never think about because I'm an American. Especially animal names, naked snail is funny.
As someone who's never played binding of Isaac, and is mostly consuming this through audio my first time through.... this is very confusing, but im still cheering you on Davey. I hope you find a dead bird or proc your best bud.
Thank you Davey Gunface for teaching me that I've learned the word "harbinger" wrong this whole time. I could have fucking sworn it was harbringer but no, it's never been harbringer.
I don't even blame you for that honestly because a harbinger BRINGS stuff with it, a harbinger of pestilence brings pestilence, a harbinger of ill omens brings ill omens, etc. Its not quite Mandela Effect tier, but its something I see regularly
I just want to point out that in greed mode, there are shop and curse room layouts that can either give pickups or items. You put yourself through a lot more suffering than was most likely nessacarly, and both respect and pity you for this. Great vid btw!
I love this type of challenge overview video, and tboi is my favorite game, so finding a challenge overview video about tboi is lowkey a dream come true for me, especially from someone to which I’m already subscribed to. One thing I’d like to point out though: keys can appear in both curse rooms and shops in greed mode. They’re usually blocked off by rocks or spikes in shops, but Azazel’s flight completely negates that issue, plus it halves the damage you take from entering curse rooms. Knowing this made watching you suffer through greed mode particularly painful to watch.
How would you even get Tainted Jacob in this ruleset? You'd have to unlock Jacob and Esau to begin with and pacifist the hardest A side characers through incredibly difficult and tanky Ascent sequence enemies and HOPE you got a trinket on the run because you sure as hell aren't getting Perfection to begin with.
@@camr7441 I gotta defend the guy a bit and say that I think they made this comment literally twenty or thirty minutes after the video uploaded, so it wasn't feasibly possible for them to watch the entire video at that time (even at 2X speed :P) If anything I think it's kind of admirable that they're like "Wow, that sounds terrible, how would you even get through it?" with foresight
21:12 its actually easier to go into the shop and listen for the key/chest dropping sound then do this because shops in greed mode almost always contain a few pickups and because youre playing azazel you will always be able to get those pickups. your strategy sounded very painful
this video actually singlehandedly got me back into isaac, i didnt even have repentance yet but seeing this honestly convinced me that i should, and it was worth it, just the past two weeks i got like 70 more hours in the game is incredibly fun maybe once i max this save i'll try beating the game as a pacifist despite your warnings...
For the greed mode restarts there are other ways to get keys. The shop room will sometimes contain drops like keys as well as chests and bags that can drop keys and money you can use to buy keys.
At first, I thought YT just randomly recommended this video to me since I watch some Isaac content, but then you mentioned Matt, who I am subscribed to, and then the recommendation doesn't seem so random anymore
I just really love how sometimes art is very subjective, you say tainted characters are the concept of a base character taken to an extrem. That is a valid point. I think they tend to be the "monkeys Paw" inverse of the charcter. Isaac is there so you can get a bunch of great item by rerolling, the inverse being that now you get to pick and choose only the best, but instead of a bunch of pretty good items you only have very few amazing ones. Magadalene usually doesnt need to worry about health at all, because her item heals her, now she is forced to think about pretty much nothing but her health. usually you wish esau were dead so you could just play jacob, well now esau wants you dead and continues to be the reason why you die, well often at least.
I have the vaguest knowledge about TBoI, but i will say that i was enthralled by this video, i watched it in one go and it's going in my "Hours long videos essays regarding subject/video games i am barelly aware of" playlist that i watch to draw/fall asleep !
I'm proud that I actually KNEW about the whole 'tilting the joystick only very slightly makes familiars fire but not you' tidbit, I never once thought it would even be remotely useful ever information, to the point where I forgot about it until you started to bring it up again.
Imo she's the most underrated character. Cambion conception is a VERY strong item if you are willing to abuse it, sure the lilith firing is annoying to control but you have a ton of potential for very strong items from the start.
1:58:12 actually, you can play as the lost before it's unlocked by entering a third victory lap. if you manage to find r key you can reset the victory lap counter and get completion marks
Ima be real here: Im german and that german bit in the middle of the video is one of the funniest bits of comedy you have EVER done, please mock german more
It took me some time to watch this video (could not do it in one sitting), but I'm really grateful for the entertainment :) Davey you are doing a great job! :) For me this was the first video where I didn't understand even half of thing you were talking about, but maybe that's because I have 0 understanding of BoI, so don't let that get to you. I'm really looking forward to your next video
Honestly I'm really happy with the quality of the products, I have a few Bug shirts that I wear, I have a ton of Bug Stickers but I haven't yet bought a Bug hoodie from myself which should really be on my wishlist (also thank you so much for supporting the channel!)
I haven't played Binding of Isaac but you did a great job describing stuff. While obviously I don't understand everything the way you describe it helps a lot, and I get the basics to know what's going on I will say however, hearing the words "Isaac gets possessed by Mega Satan" was hilarious though
As someone whos never played issac and probably won't this video was awesome to watch. It was cool learning the various game mechanics, the various boss interactions, item combos and character viability, with everything being reasonable enough to follow. This was fun even if it cost your entire sanity. Your content is fun to watch even when i have no clue about the game you're running.
Just look at the Lilith unlocks! Immaculate Conception and Box of Friends in "BAD"?Cambion Conception in "MILD"?? INCUBUS AND C-SECTION IN GOD?!?!?! What were you thinking? Ya got it backwards
Dawg i know i am hella too late for this comment to mean anything algorithmicly, but ive watched this video so much since it came out. Like used it as back ground for chores, payed attention to it on commutes and just had it on multiple times when exercising. Seriously its been in my life more than music lately. Fuckin great stuff.
You know, during the azazel greed mode part you could have complicated/simplified your run by exploring the shop and curse room since technically those can have keys or mediums to obtain them, but either way amazing video
That greed mode grind was made a lot harder than you needed it to be. You completely ignored the shop for coin drops and the curse room for coins/keys. The boss reward room wasn't the ONLY option
Thank you for this video's existence, and frankly, the rest of your channel. Watching this video helped me get through an otherwise god-awful day and distracted me from some really painful worries. I appreciate all you do here, Davey.
funny enough davey could have probably skiped the white treasure room grind by simply looking for free key spawns in store or cursed room but still he need to be lucky enough to land a usefull familiar
my longest run being a tainted samson deli run with almond milk.. while watching this vid i felt all that pain again, having this much endurance and patience is difficult, hope youll find some rest
I liked this video a lot Its really long which is nice for me to just absorb after a long ass day Good energy Good theme And Davey Gunface just good Nice man, i liked it for what its worth
i was overjoyed but also somewhat horrified to see this video in my recommended as an isaac super nerd. i haven't watched the full video yet(i imagine that's gonna take a long time since i don't expect to watch the full thing in one sitting(i have now watched it all)) but so far i'm actually impressed with how the first mom fight went. like, yeah, she's fought every single normal run but ever since the hitbox on the hands got buffed the fight is actually surprisingly tough. even before that though, she could really mess you up on slow runs. i probably would have croaked it there. one thing that kind of bothered me was the azazel greed run though. the curse rooms have keys in them sometimes! with flight and the fool card, you can check for pretty much free! the shop also has keys sometimes. if you had checked the rooms, you could have gotten things started way faster. goon is also a pretty great word. i hate what the internet did to it, it was one of my favourite words. my switch user is literally called the goon. honestly, you couldn't make me change it even at gunpoint. we do need to reclaim it! lilith will always be the goon squad character to me. also yeah angry fly sucks. if i had to pick literally one item out of all items in the game and call it the single worst one you know what i'd say? I DON'T NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT, WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS CLEAR, DON'T YOU THINK? I DON'T KNOW ANY ANSWERS OTHER THAN angry fly. yeah it just sucks. what is there to say? like pretty much every item has some sort of beneficial utility to it even if it's generally sabotage to pick up. angry fly isn't gonna kill your run, but it's also never gonna accomplish anything meaningful. yeah it'll kill an enemy in a group rarely, but come on. it sucks. it kind of hurt to see you not utilising blue baby's poop, though. being able to generate 1 fly per room as well as potentially a pickup isn't fantastic but i think it could have helped. although, idk. maybe you were using it but it wasn't helpful so you stopped. seeing as your one successful run was carried by the bible maybe it didn't matter. haven't had much to say for the rest of the video but i'm happy to see tainted apollyon be mentioned late in the video. honestly, i hadn't even been thinking of him at all since i haven't played the game in a few months but honestly probably my favourite character. isaac may be able to turn garbage into something ludicrous, but tainted apollyon turns garbage into something alright. the early game is a bit rough but tainted apollyon is fun to play and is very consistent. while i love the insanity of tainted keeper, tainted apollyon is just an unfaltering bulwark. there's no such thing as a bad tainted apollyon run, you've just played badly. and i love that! tainted apollyon is pretty much an outright denial of risk vs reward. the only risk is to your dignity if you lose, but the reward? *FEAR THE SWARM, MORTAL!* it is kind of sad that there are almost no unique locusts though. not that it affects the character much, honestly if unique locusts didn't exist and they just applied your own status effects on enemies i don't think anyone would complain. unique locusts was a bit of a logistical misplay. i respect wanting to shoot for the moon but the devs overestimated how much fuel they had. anyway this is a massive ramble lmao i'd add a tldr but like what am i supposed to say? "tldr nerdemoji lmao." these kinds of comments aren't the ones to fly far in youtube but what can i do? this is me. this is the way i comment. there's no way i can better express how i feel about a video than this, pretending otherwise would be disingenuous. i hope you're doing alright, and i hope that you will continue to do alright in the future. i love watching your videos, but at the same time i realise they are incredibly taxing for you to make. it's a kind of content that others don't really make. don't feel obligated to continue to create past what you can, though. that would be bad, and i don't want to feel in some way at least partially responsible for that kind of thing happening. this was supposed to be a conclusion. uh, oops? anyway, i had just heard of the german word treppenwitz. i misinterpreted it and thought it meant a thought that came too late, but i checked and it's a remark that came too late. i guess the word i was looking for to end this off doesn't exist. i'm actually german, but i can't speak the language. i should learn it, but learning is hard. conclusions, amirite?
I appreciate the kind words captain! Honestly I fall into the creator trap of having ideas that are "never enough". I could always add more or do more research or reread the script or proofwatch the video or make better on-screen elements and so on and so forth, but at some threshold I'm making changes that nobody cares about or nobody benefits from just because I'm slightly anxious about it. Its something I'm hoping to cut down some but I'll be totally honest my first video wasn't the best first step haha
@@DaveyGunface i'm glad you saw this comment and actually took the time to read it since it is kind of a wall haha. i hope you're able to streamline the process of making videos because having free time for yourself is very important. good luck!
as i of the rare Heretics, Who for some god forsaken reason actually enjoys Delirium unironically, and did an actual streak to Delirium with random characters, and got to like 13 wins in a row, i can for sure understand the hate it recives, but i also know a lot about how it works, like why it most often telefrags you, or why it loses a lot of hp suddenly on ocation. for the Telefrags, it's because it turned in to Mom's Foot or Satan's Foot, which are always above you, and just randomly chose to do an attack, so if it turns in to anything while it's a Foot, than that something is spawned on the floor on you, so the best way to avoid theses are to never go to delirium through satan, and to have max speed, since the Foot above you seems to slightly lag behind you when moving fast, so it usually doesn't hit you, unless it turns in to something BIG. as for the sudden loss of health, the most common way this can happen is that it turns in to phase 2 Lamb, where the body is detached, which for some reason seems to not have boss armor, so your off screen tiers can deal a lot more damage than intended to it, also bosses like Hallow or Larry Jr, have a lot of segments, which count thwords the max hp, but if it suddenly swiches to something with less segments, the game probably counts it as "Delirium just lost 3 segments out of 5, so let's take away 60% of it's hp", that's the best guess i have form all my 100+ Delirium kills. Probably isn't accurate, since the boss is a mess. Still love to play all my run to delirium as often as possible, also gave me a good benchmark for boss rush and hush, since as long as your runs go through the first 6 floors at a pace of 3:20 per floor, you will make it to Boss rush, which than leaves you 5 minutes per Womb floor for Hush, which are both pretty easy to keep to if you don't need to full clear the floors, also go through Downpour/Dross in these runs, since you will have 3 floors out of 6 that have Basement sized generation, rather than 2 Basement floors and 1 caves floor, while it's harder, you will save time in navigation, and also if you are through the Downpour in less than 8 minutes you should consider going for the extra boss item in the Mirror, and if you have D6 than the extra item room item too.
I watched this a couple months ago, back before I got most of my marks and before I had even successfully beaten hush. I'm now rewatching because this whole video is insane to me!
During the Azazel greed attempts where you started listing probabilities you don't need the silver treasure room to contain the three items you mentioned. The shop can have keys or chests that have keys that are blocked off by rocks or spikes. Azazel starts with flight so you could have negated the dice rolling. I don't know but I'm half decently sure that curse rooms can hold keys as well.
you dont HAVE to get a key giving item in greed to start the run, because the shop can sometimes spawn keys and as azazel you can usually get them with no problems
Didn't think I'd watch the whole video, especially not in one sitting, but here we are. I guess I AM certified dead god isaac trash, so maybe I shouldn't be too surprised. Really liked the video. This kind of garbage challenge is right up my alley.
regarding the azazel greed run, you couldve made things MUCH easier on yourself by checking the shop for a good starting item, then start the waves. you have BLACK HEARTS, just dodge everything by hovering over a rock or something, the first floor doesnt have many fliers. when it spawns enough coins, either run into an enemy or the pause button, which does damage, and nuke the room. bam, money at the cost of a variable amounts of your health.
This is one of the best video essays I have ever watched and it's on trying to defeat a game in a way that is objectively stupid. Bravo And may your future endeavors be less torturous
Dave is now officially a Mongolian Warlord, write it down people. We all now know his weakness is trying to siege island nations due to tsunamis fucking his attempt up
Davey is honestly a criminally underrated youtuber. He puts way too much effort into his videos and only has 100k subs. Not like that isn't a lot of subs, but definitely deserves over a million for his amazing monotone voice, at the very minimum.
finally watched the video and as someone who was obsessed with original issac like before rebirth then forgot about it for a long time, this whole video and new bosses confused the shit out of me but hey it was a fun trip
So a little note for greed mode. The cursed room and shop sometimes can spawn keys so it might've been worth poking your head in those rooms before holding R.
You should do "Brother I'm stuck" custom challenge. I dont know if it still works in the current patch of the game, but the premise is you start off as t jacob with birthright, an infinite r key and a gulped panic button. No items ever spawn under any circumstance (not even negative/polaroid) and your goal is to beat isaac. Panic button ensures that you will have your run restarted once you take damage and your only hope for improving your built are trinkets and some pickups. Dont wanna spoil the solution to the challenge, but after about 4-5 hours of screwing around you will naturally realize what things you should take to increase your chances of progressing.
small correction when you're talking about the ankh being the only item that can revive you as a character you haven't unlocked yet, missing poster can revive you as lost before unlocking him even if you don't die in a sacrifice room
so, you could easily lessen your suffering on greed mode by just cheking the curse room and store, curse room sometimes provides bombs to blow the keeppers for cents to buy a key and the store some times has keys and chests spawning in there, so you could at least shaved 2 hours
I remember when the dlc was still a fan mod and base jacob and esua was my favorite character. Gameplay wise i found that it was best to keep them together and give jacob most defensive items as you can hold him down and maneuver esua behind him. They got double items from the alt path so i would usually invest all dps upgrades in to which ever one got the better high quality items to base the run around. The main reason they are my favorite character is because i always loved finding glitchs or settings that let you play 2 or more characters at once in video games mainly becuse i never have friends who like to play my favorite games.
Not using chariot on that blood donation machine at 8:20 was pain. Especially since you were just talking about trying to get the donation machine to 600 coins.
Ngl its been years since ive played/watched binding of isaac, was not expecting to see this come across my dash and i am HERE FOR IT. Thanks for all the hard work Davey ^-^
I had only played about 5 hours of isaac in high school before watching this video on the day it was uploaded. Half way through I decided to play isaac and put in about 125 hours between then and now (about 20 days) so good vid I guess. On another note, I did not realise delirium was hated. I knew it was considered hard, but it's my favourite boss in the game. I was annoyed when I started doing beast runs because it meant I couldn't get to it for a while. Hell, I had the opposite opinion where the beast feels like a lacklustre finish to the game and I wish delirium was the true final boss or the final super boss or whatever.
I randomly got into Isaac a week ago and THIS happens?! I don't know if I'm blessed or cursed, but regardless congrats on the run. Or condolences, whichever is more appropriate.
on the greed mode the shop often contains a key peekup, so I think the more optimal way to reset the run would be to, either or, see the shop as well, or only check it, cuz I think the chance of it having a layout with a key is higher than silver treasure room having an item that can provide one. EDIT: I also have to mention, that Lilith is my favourite character
19:58 I don't understand why 'only shoot when I shoot' familiars are allowed with charged attacks. In a pacifist run I imagine Isaac as someone without the intend to hurt anything. He stumbles over random items, he doesn't know what they do and some of them attack on their own. But he wouldn't even try brimstone because he doesn't attack. Those familiars only mimic what he does. They won't attack if he doesn't attack and if they attack, that somewhat implies he attacked in some sense. It's an odd rule choice IMO.
Just as a tip to anyone who wants to do the challenge, with greed mode if you start the waves let the coins spawn, you can wait it out to the last wave and exit the game, the coins will remain on the ground, there will be no enemies and you’ll be able to go through doors like normal and you’ll be able to buy a key that way, hopefully this helps
i am convinced you're basically the character tekken from hyperdimension neptunia: you've tortured your body and soul so much with these you now enjoy it.
Challenges like this are always gonna have very scuffed rules, the art of doing challenges like this well is to make the rules that make you life easier feel fair. And I think you have done that pretty well
I absolutely can't believe you did this. lmao Besides it being fucking incredible, the video is nice to watch and I didn't felt bored on those two and a half hours. Pretty good. I'll keep watching your videos.
The joystick thing could be done with custom joystick curves depending on the software for your controller, moat can have custom curves, so when you push your stick it follows that custom curve, you could set up a curve that stays at like 5% the entire time
I’m pretty sure keys can spawn in curse room and in the shop in greed mode and given azazel can fly it makes curse rooms less taxing and keys behind rocks accessible, so you could have made things a lot easier for yourself there. Actually now that I think about it you could probably tank a few hits to proc your black heart and get 5 coins and basically guarantee a key each run by stopping the waves early. I feel like unless you get an unlock or benchmark in the challenge during a run where accidentally delta contact damage or something it shouldn’t outright invalidate the whole challenge if you just restart the run and pretend it never happened.

I'd like to point out that, not really playing or even knowing enough about tBoI to get like, super invested into this video, I sorta tuned out while using it as background audio while I did other things. I bring this up, because I nearly spat out my drink hearing that sentence.
This comment is literally me
Proves his point from the intro.
Do you know there’s a secret key item in castle, crashers that can unlock you a pet from dnd
Even as somebody that's close to 100%ing Isaac, this video does become "I like your funny words magic man" sometimes, and I'm totally fine with that
@@vsptylore3639 I have consumed way too much Isaac content and I've followed every single word. This is not a brag, this is a cry for help.
That's essentially what binding of Isaac is, so I'd say you got the prime experience of it.
i mean the game is basically that. a child experiencing hallucinations from oxygen deprivation from being locked in a chest
angry fly is programmed to circle around an enemy, which is why it can't kill a single enemy
It’s literally only useful for beelzebub
I remember when it was launched it had a fix orbit so big enemies would just get constant damage since they were bigger than that orbit. Then they fixed him to adapt to enemies and now i would say it is one of the worst items in all of the games
If it atleast flew through the enemies every now and again itd be fine@@ScirioBirdLover
@@dodojesus4529 it is incredibly rare or only works in big groups of enemies
i swear to god i thought he did an orbit dip to make sure he did damage
The greedmode part is painful. Especially given that there are sometimes keys just lying around in the shop, which is more likely than 3/64
Edit: also, Azazel has black hearts. He could get money for a guaranteed key
I was also gonna comment this but you beat me to it
Exactly, I often try to get a key to check the item room before starting the first wave
This and the fact you can also sometimes just get 5 cents from poops/fires and coins in the silver room, and also the fact that you can find keys/chests in the cure room (which is free for Azazel due to flight + fool card) the resets are for sure a bit longer but you'd have more chances at an item.
He starts with a fool card, so he also has free checks for the curse room
here's his reply to someone else who mentioned it so you don't have to go look for it:
"That's true, honestly as superficial as this sounds I think the resets for the silver item room were a lot simpler because I could just lock my brain onto a few items, and if they spawned I could just immediately go up and check if a viable start was in there. My cave man brain didn't enjoy it, but it understood the task well enough to repeat it via muscle memory"
"Fortunately for us, we also obtained lil haunt, one of the best items in the game for us" is absolutely a sentence that's never been said before
Lil haunt is the scariest familiar.
Lil Haunt is actually quite decent for a q1 item tho
i love lil haunt he's my bro and carries me through the game when i start
it would be a true sentence if you had Gnawed Leaf.
It was a fun strat to open hush/boss rush, I sometimes wish they bring it back
the patch that made dark esau immmortal completely salvaged the character. as much as I enjoyed exploiting the explosion, it didn't outweigh the insane jank. we all experienced the spiked rocks of course, but if you rushed mega satan rather than letting dark esau spawn beforehand, mega satan would treat it like a fallen angel or super sin and sit there unable to be damaged until you killed the wretched thing, and this is only my personal hell from dark esau. from the 2nd worst character to among the best in the blink of an eye
i remember northernlion killed him with the eraser one time.
To be honest I expected this video to be an attempt to play the game using the custom PAC1 F1ST seed, which is literally the secret pacifist game mode.
But this is so much harder lol. Props.
Thought so too! This was much harder and probably more interesting than that would've been.
15:30 you're way lucker than you thought, it's not 2 items out of a dozen, it's ~17 items
out of HUNDREDS
you picked up CHAOS which, puts EVERY item in EVERY pool, meaning that you were wayyyyy luckier than you thought here
I genuinely had text on screen for that but I deleted it because I wasn't sure at the time if Chaos affected the room you picked it up in, if so that's actually even more insane because it coincidentally rolled into a shop Zodiac item too
@@DaveyGunfaceunless repentance broke chaos, yes it works in the room you picked it up in.
For anyone curious, the exact chances aren't 17(well, 15 since he couldn't get the items he had)/[item count -everythyng that already spawned], since instead of spawning a random item, chaos spawns an item from a random item pool, with based on the amount of items in that pool. The chance was probably even lower than 15/[item count -everything that already spawned]
nice pfp
@@DaveyGunfaceit did work bc you got stigmata in the shop
The the azazel greed start, honestly you shoulda been looking at the shop instead. The shop has tons of layouts that contain a key, crawl space, or chest, and the shop might have an item that you want which you can get money for by either getting semi-lucky in the shop or waiting out all of the waves in the main room using flight then killing them all with a black heart. Also since you had flight, curse rooms would more often than not give you back more than you paid for
He wanted to torture himself completely. Once you commit to it, there’s no going back
You know, the whole video until the reveal, I was thinking "Man, T Jacob would be great for this.
My next run, Jacob had no eyes, and bled hyper realistic blood!"
You feel me?
"I remember your birthrights!" is an absolutely insane comment, I don't know how I feel about getting the reference, and I almost hate that it is almost completely correct both in game and biblically. Can't wait until Dark Esau escapes from the game and chases your mouse cursor, and if it ever makes contact with it it'll delete System 32
Every run of TBOI is personalised
The Esau Apparition!
O/10 unbelievable. No ones favorite character is Jacob and Hitbox. Completely ruined my immersion
Human… I remember you’re genocides…
As someone who has enjoyed Isaac from flash to triple dead god, its incredible to see such an incredible display of ‘Isaac player’ in this challenge… tens to hundreds of hours of painful luck checks. Amazing video, hope to see more. Maybe a side video on which challenges are possible would be funny.
Glad you made this content even if you weren’t sure it would be picked up by the algorithm!
Davey, I too share your love of the word goon, and I would like to let you know that I fully support your "take back the goons" movement
This is one of the most impressive video game challenges I have ever seen, based purely on the level of patience and dedication needed to complete it. Godspeed Davey, may the odds be ever in your favor.
Great! Another episode of "Davey Gunface tortures himself for hours on end", my favorite series
I almost pissed myself when you went on the german tangent, it's my primary language but just looking at HERAUSFORDERUNGEN was so funny to me!
I love learning German words because it's either "Haha, this is just like the English Word but with some different vowels!", or "What is this unholy machination of a word? Why is this word eighteen letters long?? How are you supposed to pronounce this??? WHY DID YOU MAKE LIKE EIGHT WORDS INTO ONE WORD THAT CAN'T FIT ON THE SCREEN???"
Actually you do also get the words that are very literal that I make fun of before realizing that English has tons of very literal words that I just never think about because I'm an American.

WHAT?!?! My first run after learning this I figured out that Brimstone and Tech X actually do something? How did I never know this???
I just want to point out that in greed mode, there are shop and curse room layouts that can either give pickups or items. You put yourself through a lot more suffering than was most likely nessacarly, and both respect and pity you for this. Great vid btw!

Only an hour in, but I love the anecdote you threw in 😂😂😂
Shoutout to Kansas, what a state to grow up in eh
That made me laugh so hard.
Now that I think about it this run is definitely possible with tainted Jacob.

I've never really watched isaac content, but I'm still excited to watch Davey
21:12 its actually easier to go into the shop and listen for the key/chest dropping sound then do this because shops in greed mode almost always contain a few pickups and because youre playing azazel you will always be able to get those pickups. your strategy sounded very painful
this video actually singlehandedly got me back into isaac,
i didnt even have repentance yet but seeing this honestly convinced me that i should, and it was worth it, just the past two weeks i got like 70 more hours in the game is incredibly fun
maybe once i max this save i'll try beating the game as a pacifist despite your warnings...
you're the walter white to my gaming challenges addiction
And Bug is my Jesse, but without all of the trauma and abuse. They're both just silly little guys.
In the greed mode section you could have found a key in the shop layout.
I'm proud that I actually KNEW about the whole 'tilting the joystick only very slightly makes familiars fire but not you' tidbit, I never once thought it would even be remotely useful ever information, to the point where I forgot about it until you started to bring it up again.
I will say this does not apply to the switch version
I can't believe the Lilith slander. I love familiars so she's a great time for me to play : )

I will say however, hearing the words "Isaac gets possessed by Mega Satan" was hilarious though
Wow. Just wow. Thank you Davey only for existing. Luv ya!

truly a madman for trying to beat every story boss with all your runs on life support, kudos

I liked this video a lot
Its really long which is nice for me to just absorb after a long ass day
Good energy
Good theme
And Davey Gunface just good
Nice man, i liked it for what its worth
i was overjoyed but also somewhat horrified to see this video in my recommended as an isaac super nerd. i haven't watched the full video yet(i imagine that's gonna take a long time since i don't expect to watch the full thing in one sitting(i have now watched it all)) but so far i'm actually impressed with how the first mom fight went. like, yeah, she's fought every single normal run but ever since the hitbox on the hands got buffed the fight is actually surprisingly tough. even before that though, she could really mess you up on slow runs. i probably would have croaked it there.
one thing that kind of bothered me was the azazel greed run though. the curse rooms have keys in them sometimes! with flight and the fool card, you can check for pretty much free! the shop also has keys sometimes. if you had checked the rooms, you could have gotten things started way faster.
goon is also a pretty great word. i hate what the internet did to it, it was one of my favourite words. my switch user is literally called the goon. honestly, you couldn't make me change it even at gunpoint. we do need to reclaim it! lilith will always be the goon squad character to me.
also yeah angry fly sucks. if i had to pick literally one item out of all items in the game and call it the single worst one you know what i'd say?
*FEAR THE SWARM, MORTAL!*
it is kind of sad that there are almost no unique locusts though. not that it affects the character much, honestly if unique locusts didn't exist and they just applied your own status effects on enemies i don't think anyone would complain. unique locusts was a bit of a logistical misplay. i respect wanting to shoot for the moon but the devs overestimated how much fuel they had.
anyway this is a massive ramble lmao i'd add a tldr but like what am i supposed to say?
"after hours and hours of hard R's"
bro joined competitive racism and he's aiming for top 1
amazing video, amazing creator, fucked up brain, subbed
you dont HAVE to get a key giving item in greed to start the run, because the shop can sometimes spawn keys and as azazel you can usually get them with no problems
A personal firing squad made up of floating babies that kill your enemies for you? Badass.
Two and a half motherfucking hours...
Davey, you're a mad legend.
Didn't think I'd watch the whole video, especially not in one sitting, but here we are. I guess I AM certified dead god isaac trash, so maybe I shouldn't be too surprised.
Really liked the video. This kind of garbage challenge is right up my alley.
Of course you can; it's you who's playing after all.
regarding the azazel greed run, you couldve made things MUCH easier on yourself by checking the shop for a good starting item, then start the waves. you have BLACK HEARTS, just dodge everything by hovering over a rock or something, the first floor doesnt have many fliers. when it spawns enough coins, either run into an enemy or the pause button, which does damage, and nuke the room. bam, money at the cost of a variable amounts of your health.
20:10 if you use a Xbox controller (and maybe some others) you can very lightly move it so you don’t shoot but your familiars do edit: 35:30 dang it
This is one of the best video essays I have ever watched and it's on trying to defeat a game in a way that is objectively stupid. Bravo And may your future endeavors be less torturous
Ty for the content, and putting yourself through the torture for us and your content.
Especially since you were just talking about trying to get the donation machine to 600 coins.
siren must SUCKKKK with this challenge
Just as a tip to anyone who wants to do the challenge, with greed mode if you start the waves let the coins spawn, you can wait it out to the last wave and exit the game, the coins will remain on the ground, there will be no enemies and you’ll be able to go through doors like normal and you’ll be able to buy a key that way, hopefully this helps
key can spawn as natural pick ups in both the shop and the curse room in greed. could've saved a ton of time by just checking them every reset
i am convinced you're basically the character tekken from hyperdimension neptunia: you've tortured your body and soul so much with these you now enjoy it.
Challenges like this are always gonna have very scuffed rules, the art of doing challenges like this well is to make the rules that make you life easier feel fair. And I think you have done that pretty well
This is some really impressive commitment to the bit. Great video man.
I absolutely can't believe you did this. lmao
Besides it being fucking incredible, the video is nice to watch and I didn't felt bored on those two and a half hours.
I really like that you used two different rulesets, it's like the best of both worlds!
2:39 rooms become cleared after like a few minutes to avoid softlocks and it's abusable
