@@playitagainsue Child in Time was performed live many times in 1969 and was also an opening tune by Purple at their Concerto for Group and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ….
I can listen to this song a hundred thousand times, just to break Lars's record ! I feel like a child in a wrong time. My first choice of music is a classical, with its holy trio of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, but in Rock'N'Roll, that kind of trio is Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Thank you. Hi Dusan, greetings back to you from me here in Canada. I love all kinds of music too. It keeps it interesting and fun to listen to a variety. Thanks so much for tuning in 🤩
Hi Sue, went to the live version and both are great. Got to admit that the live version is even more impressive and seeing them in action is a joy. First time listen for me 🙂
"Child in time" is one of Deep Purple's true masterpieces. It was actually written as an anti-nuclear/anti-cold war song. The live version recorded at the BBC for a show called "Doing their Thing" is superb (I see somebody has linked to it in another comment 👍), but the best version imo is from their classic live album "Made in Japan".
There is this utterly impressive, awesome and great 1970 live version. Never mind the zombie-like audience. They were told to stay calm because they were making some kind of demo tape
Just subscribed. One of my favourite all time bands from the early 70's. Saw them live two years running in Glasgow 1971 - 72 Ian Gillan one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time if not the greatest. David Byron of Uriah Heep springs to mind. You need to see the live videos of this there are two of them.
Hey Lazarus, thank you so much for subbing. I really appreciate it. I bet they were amazing to see. I did listen to the live version yesterday and it was amazing. This band is incredible. Ian's voice is off the charts. I will do more of their stuff in the future 🤩💙
This iconic and epic vocal and instrumental masterpiece needs to be shown and listened to in a live performance, the audio version, although good is nothing compared to the live one and the instrumental solos are longer and more in-depth live. And the song is even longer live. Do this song again but live.
If you want pure magic play Deep Purple Hallelujah from 1969 - Child in Time from In Rock 1970 and then play Fools 1971, followed by When a Blind Man Cries 1972 and Place in Line 1973 ……
On April the 30th they will release their new single from their new upcoming album.I believe that it is amazing to listen new music by them! The years may pass but their spirit keeps going!
Ian Gillan was my favourite rock singer/screamer of the 70's. You should check out his duet with the guitar from their live Made in Japan album for the track "Strange Kind of Woman". He was always able to sing/scream pitch perfectly. I think that was why when they wrote Jesus Christ Superstar, the songs for the part of Jesus was done with Ian's voice in mind, and he was the original singer for the part of Jesus on the first JCS studio album. However, I don't think he ever performed it live, because he was more interested in singing with Deep Purple.
Sue, hi. Good to see you. The album version is good, but please check out this live version ua-cam.com/video/OorZcOzNcgE/v-deo.html. I normally prefer studio or album versions, but this one is fantastic! And where is your little friend? Please show her the live version. Thanks and God Bless!
Hey Musicaficionado, it is wonderful to hear from you again...always a pleasure. Chels moved to another town about a year ago so I only get her sometimes now when she visits but don't worry, you will still see her here and there. I will check the live version out. Thanks a bunch 🤩💚
@@playitagainsue Oh, I am sorry to hear about Chels. She is adorable. However, it's fine as long as you are both OK and stay in touch. After all, we do not chose a family, we are just stuck with them (just kidding, sometimes not 🙂), but friendship is priceless. Looking forward to your videos. Thanks and God Bless!
I do SO love seeing the jaw-dropping/eyes-widening of people when they first hear Ian Gillan go up an octave into the scream, and then again as their eyes widen even further, and their jaw hits the floor(!), as he goes up yet another octave to that sublime top-A which surpasses every superlative I can think of. 🙂 It's *great* that you chose a remastered studio version. I didn't know about this 2016 re-master, but only the earlier 1995 re-master. I just now re-listened to the latter and I reckon it's actually better(!). The 2016 version seems not to have as good a balance between treble and bass volumes, imho. As for live versions, others have already mentioned the BBC video but I reckon the original studio version is better. It seems like every live performance of this song is rather different, with LOTS of improvisation in both the organ pieces and the middle guitar solo. To me, the original studio version is more eerie/mysterious/psychedelic, and the guitar solo more soaring, than any of the live versions. Also, Ian is (very slightly) off-pitch in that live version, imho, whereas the studio version is impeccable. Opinions may differ on this, of course. 🙂 ISTM that very few modern singers can even come close to Ian Gillan. The best I've heard is Petr Elfimov (Belarusian) -- there's a video of him doing this song with full orchestral backing. He also does "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar, which is another song that Ian Gillan sang masterfully long ago and (imho) has never been equalled. (I see you've done a reaction to John Farnham's version of that. Ian Gillan is much better.) Finally, if you're looking other recommendations,... I see you've done only one(?) Pink Floyd song (Brick in the Wall). Their "PULSE 1994" concert has probably the best renditions of many of their songs. You could pretty much work your way through every song in that concert and not be disappointed.
Hey Strange Rep, amazing info. Thanks a bunch. You nauled when you said jaw dropping. It truly is. I just haven't heard anything like that. Ian's voice is awe inspiring....unbelievable song 🤩💚
Chid in Time es verdaderamente una obra maestra!! 💜💜💜💜💜
Great Song Choice !!! This line up of Deep Purple truly was a band in every sense of work ; every member contributed and all were at top of game Gillan , Lord , Glover , Pace and Blackmore Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist left and formed another great rock band Rainbow Ritchie really doest get the respect he deserve probably because he turned his back on rock or because he is famously a curmudgeon Ritchie Blackmore now plays medieval / baroque music with his band Blackmore’s Night This was fantastic Not sure if was off Deep Purple iMade in Japan Woman from Tokyo is my favorite Deep Purple song
All great musicians: Gillan left first and was replaced by David Coverdale. When Purple finally split Coverdale, Lord and Glover formed Whitesnake...was Ian Paice there too? I had a single by them 'Lie Down (I think I Love Tou)'. Sounds like a Whitesnake song title ! Lots of line-up changes followed. Ritchie had an ongoing feud with the press but was a great band leader and wit..."Sincerity; when you can fake that you;ve made it [in the music business]". Jon Lord was the one for classical music. Classically trained and friend of Malcolm Arnold, he composed the 'Durham Concerto' and a piano concerto (Boom of the Tingling Strings) among other pieces. The Concerto for Group and Orchestra conducted my Arnold and filmed and recorded at the Albert Hall was not a great hit, 'In Rock' was...so Deep Purple stayed rocking.
Since you liked the guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore's playing I would highly suggest checking out his next band after Deep Purple called "Rainbow". Rainbow formed in 1975 featuring a relatively unknown singer Ronnie James Dio. Songs like "Stargazer", "Temple of the King", "Catch the Rainbow", "Gates of Babylon" and "Man on the Silver Mountain" are classics. Their live shows were fantastic, check out the live versions from the 1977 Munich concert - songs like "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow".
You named the 2 songs from the Munich live performance I could listen to in a loop all day long. I had heard of Dio before, but I only came across these Rainbow songs like 2 years ago. I have since then become a devout Dio admirer. Such talent
The Live performance, which others have no doubt recommended already, is quite good... but obviously nowhere near as tight as this one. You might wonder why the crowd is so still, seemingly unimpressed... Ignore it, it's only because they were told to behave by the TV crew -- I'm sure they were ready to burst at the seams by the time the song was over! Not sure I could have done it, myself. ;-]
Hey Robert, I listened to the live version earlier today. I think both versions are great...each offer something but boy was that crowd dead. I couldn't have done that either 🤣. Why would they tell them to act like that 😀
No question this song is a masterpiece and the album In Rock is a huge influence on the progression of hard rock and metal. Ritchie Blackmore is a guitar legend. I have also heard that Ritchie was an inspiration to Eddie Van Halen as well. If you want to check out a live version of this song, I know a lot of people will ask you to watch the live 1970 video. I prefer the video of their 1984 Perfect Strangers tour. The reason being, although Ian's screaming is harder than the studio version, Ritchie's guitar solo on the studio version is much better than the 1970 live version. So I suggest the 1984 live version more. Also, definitely check out the 1970 live in London video of Mandrake Root. You can almost hear the foundations of speed metal being laid in some parts.
Hey James, thanks for tuning in. I could totally see why Ritchie woukd have inspired other guitar players. This band is unbelievable. I did watch the 1970 live version a couple of days ago and it was incredible. I will check out the 80s version you suggested next. Thanks a bunch 🤩
Ulrich listening to this song 92 thousand times? Let's do the math, shall we? 10-minutes song x 92,000 times = 920,000 minutes spent listening to one song. 920,000 minutes is 15333 hours and 20 minutes, which is 639 days and 17 hrs... which then converts to 1.75 years! Do we seriously think that this dude has spent almost 2 years of his life listening to a single track? I dunno about you, but I'm calling bullshit. Loads and loads of bullshit! ;-]
Child in Time was originally released on their 1970 album Deep Purple In Rock. The entire album is a piece of rock history, total masterpiece.
