You mentioned Glenn Hughes. He joined Deep Purple in 1974. He played bass and sung in Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, California Breed, Hughes Turner Project/HTP, The Dead Daisies and was the vocalist on the Black Sabbath album Seventh Star.

But it all HAS to be from Made In Japan as other versions often have poor mixes.

To people who aren't that immersed in keyboard players' world it might sound strange, but playing a Hammond keyboard is entirely different from playing any other keyboard. There are entirely different techniques to the art, many of them based on playing seemingly dissonant notes, playing legato (letting the tone continue) where a regular pianist/keyboardist would only do a quick tap, using the tone generator's resonance to create various effects, etc. Basically you can spend 10 years learning piano techniques, reading musical score from paper, getting a "feel" for the instruments.. then you start studying Hammond keyboard and throw away three quarters of the stuff you thought you knew, and study for another five or ten years to be a good player. There are rare exceptions of players who have a natural talent for playing in that manner, and those can turn the keyboard into a true Beast - like Jon Lord did.

I grew up and heard Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin as some of the first rock music...and I have never left it. I grew up in the best time ever music wise!
Jon Lord (RIP) on keyboard was also a genius....and guitarist Ritchie Blackmoore was ahead of his time and a brilliant player...and still is. Ian Gillan still sing to this day. This is music history at its finest.

The bloke on the guitar is no other than the guitar wizard himself, Ritchie Blackmore, a true virtuoso! This is the classic Deep Purple line up: Jon Lord, organ, Roger Glover, bass, Ian Paice, drums, Ian Gillan, vocals, and Blackmore, guitar. Each one of these guys was/is a superbly accomplished musician in his own right with a perfect sense of time; but performances like this one come from practicing incessantly and a love for playing live (no autotune or special effects). Those of us who saw Deep Purple at that time, certainly remember their mastery and loudness.

Don't be fooled by the specific performance, as it was in a television studio with a live television audience and they were actually told that they had to be as quiet as possible so that the performance could be recorded with that primitive setting. But there is other live footage from them at the time that looks a lot more like a regular Rock concert with people just going crazy and stuff.
A lot of people when they first see this have that reaction as did i, but the reality is it's a very special situation but we're so lucky to have this footage because you get such good up close footage of them just all totally doing their thing and kicking ass. And the fidelity is great.

The story behind Deep Purple's song 'Highway Star' is bonkers and really highlights just how good they actually were:
They were doing an interview on their tour bus between venues, and the reporter asked them about how they wrote their songs. In response, front man Ian Gillan asked the reporter for a topic (a car was the choice), drummer Ian Paice to give him a beat, and bassist Roger Glover for a bass line. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore then chimed in that he had a riff he thought would work, and John Lord (keyboard) joined in shortly thereafter. Within 15 minutes, the beginnings of 'Highway Star' had taken shape, and it was ready for performance by the time they arrived at their destination.

Ian Gillian is one of the greatest singers whose ever lived and this band is straight up amazing. They're the progenitors of progressive metal. You won't be disappointed listening to more of their music. As far as guitar and keyboards interacting, check out Dream Theater

Deep purple at one time in the 70s were the loudest band in the world, they knocked 3 of their audience unconscious with the sound. I saw them a the Kings Hall Belveiw uk in 1974 and I was deaf for days.

I was too young to see them live in the 70s and they had split up by the time I was old enough,, however they reformed with a few exceptions a few years back and I got to see them in Manchester about 6 years ago and boy o boy it was worth the wait. Gillan, has still got it. WOW!!!!!

I'm so glad you reacted to this. I mean they were such an influential and important band in the history of rock music. They influenced so many bands for years afterwards. All four of them were just amazing. And Jon Lord on Hammond B-3 organ with the rotating Leslie speaker and other Keys was an incredibly essential part of the mix. They all were. They were all top of their game.
If you like this, I'm sure your mind will be blown when you listen to their hit Highway Star from their iconic album machine head. They are always so good live but I would strongly advise you to check out the studio recording of that one. It's just absolutely blazes and then you see Jon Lord playing simultaneously these faster arpeggios for a bit with Ritchie Blackmore on the guitar, and everything about it just Cooks like crazy and it's so filled with attitude and it's just Balls to the wall.
There is such a long-running joke about how many people have been issued speeding tickets while blasting this as they cruise down the road. It's an absolute banger, and they really show off on that one.

😮 Wooow!!

Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, and many others had great influence over my decision to embrace heavy rock-n-roll. I was born in 1960 and grew up with this genre of music.
