in my opinion... on video ... no, there is nothing better than this played by a rock band ... and in album to listen nothing better than their Live in Stockholm 1970
In my opinion (as a non-drummer), the greatest strength Ian Paice had was his ability to read where everybody else were going. It's more noticeable in other old live clips, but I think it's amazing how quickly he adapts to the improvisation of his band members.

@@setonhillstudiosAlso, in case you’re not aware, Ian Gillis (the singer) sang the part of Jesus in the original rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” (not in the movie that came later). I know you have reacted to Dan Vasc’s version of “Gethsamane” (that’s how I found you, since I’m a huge DV fan). Obviously Ian can pull off those insane high notes as well… ❤
This is one of the few hard rock groups I enjoyed in the 60's-70's. "Smoke On The Water" is their most popular song. Everyone has heard that famous riff. Some of my favorites are their covers of Joe South's "Hush" & Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". Also like "Highway Star", "Woman From Tokyo", "Lazy", "Fireball", Speed King", "Space Truckin'" etc.
I was lucky enough to see Deep Purple in 1971, 5 rows from the stage, with this same lineup: Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), Ian Gillan (vocals), and the virtuoso among virtuosos, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). They were already playing songs from their Machine Head album which was released a few months later in 1972. Hard for me to pick a favorite Purple song, there are so many, but Smoke on the Water and Highway Star alwasy get me going; Child in Time ranks up there too.
The live version of their concert in Stockholm 1970 is even better! Lasts 19 minutes and you get not bored for one second. And I'm not even a rock fan but a reggae fan
Born in 74 but i've known that song since I was a little baby 'cause my father would play it over and over. I didn't listen to it for years as I was a little bit fed up you know. ^^ Now my father has left us for other skies...I listen to it regularly and played it to my daughter. She is learning guitar and she loves it. Transmission is not a vain word man. Loved your reaction. Keep on rockin' ^^

… Rock music is explained like this: There is a lead guitar, an organ, a bass, a singer, a drummer... and there is DEEP PURPLE!! … And "Made in Japan" is the best damn live album in music history! … There is nothing more to say!! 🎸🎹🥁🎤
There isn't much footage of them from back in the 70s, but check out anything from their live album Made In Japan, largely regarded as arguably the best live album of all time. Highway Star has some old video footage and synched with the excellent album audio. For Ian Paice star moments check out the studio versions of Burn and Lay Down Stay Down, such inventive drumming on those two. You'll love them!
True, I totally agree. Made in Japan is the best Rock album recorded entirely live. I am 62 and I am from Barcelona and in my youth in my country at that time if you had Made in Japan you were the King, and we used to take our records to all the parties at friends' houses, where the records would break down and the best ones would simply disappear. . I bought that album twice and over the years I bought it again on CD. On my 50th birthday my wife gave me Made in Japan on vinyl and when I heard the first beats of Highway Star I couldn't contain more than one tear. Keep on rocking
@@jaumepiquebernaus1853 Thanks so much for sharing the memories! I always love to hear stories of the impact certain music had on people! Have a great one!
yet they've done "Child in time" so much better at other times. If you haven't heard the version on "Made in Japan" you should check it out! Also the version (with video) from "Live in Denmark '72" is great too.
@@setonhillstudios Back when you needed to be a good musisian and not just look like i model to have a career :) they took pride in their craft unlike most today unfortunately.
One of the guys in our dorm @ I.U 1970 brought this into our room and we collectively lost our minds. Lead singer Ian Gillan also fyi played Jesus in the seventies Rock Opera " Jesus Christ Superstar" Check out "Gethsemane" It's a life changing experience
For me it's the whole Deep Purple In rock album... Personal faves, next to Child in time ofc being Living wreck and Into the fire, just one right after the other.
The audience looked like they didn’t understand what was happening. But it was 1970 and music like this was like from outer space compared to what was done before. Gillan had unbelievable range back then. And they are still touring despite doing the Long Goodbye Tour couple years back. One of my all time favourite bands for sure.
1960-70s is the best style of music of all genre including hard rock !!! Though in DP, there's personal conflict between Gillan and Blackmore that made them set apart, I disregard this. I love their work and noone can change Blackmore. Neither can Gillan! Without them, it's not deep purple!
Awesome reaction! Took me ages to realise the importance of Mr Paice, but it was when he played with other bands after '76 that it really highlighted it for me. He was - and still is - the metronome! If you've got a spare 20 minutes then Space Truckin' off of Made in Japan will blow your mind! Regarded by many as the best live album and unedited! There's also some live performances of the instrumental "Wring That Neck" which are also a must. The '87 album called "House of Blue Light" I prefer to call "the drumming album", which is rarely visited by reactors! And finally for a quick fix that will have you stunned then it has to be "Burn" from '74. So jealous as you start your new journey - Good Luck!
I've crushed on The Chief for decades (I'm 61). Although I'm a bass player, he's my star of the show. Roger Glover's one of the best on bass, laying down spectacular fullness to their every catalog of music (except, of course, Glenn Hughes). This is, without question, their opus. I just wish Ian Gillan step down as a vocalist. He was one of the very pinnacles of vocalization in rock music but should've stepped down after Perfect Strangers. He's now the Joe Biden of frontmen.
Great reaction. There’s a couple of shots from their album Made in Japan. A double live album that is fantastic. Some of the songs are on UA-cam, I think.
Never figured out why Purple never gets the respect it deserves. Is there a better rock vocalist than Gillan or a tighter rhythm section? And of course, one of the great guitar gods and a virtuoso on keyboards (R.I.P. John). They still continue to produce some pretty good albums which unfortunately get little attention in North America.
Exceptional talent from this group. Also check out the guitarist's (Ritchie Blackmore) next band called Rainbow. Super group with Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums along with Ritchie's guitar. Songs like "Stargazer" and the 1977 Munich concert songs "Mistreated" & "Catch the Rainbow". These will blow you away.
Deep Purple are the sh*ts! I had to see your mind blown by these guys 🤣 Oh and btw, Dirty Loops have dropped a new tune on March 8, called “Run Away”. A precursor to their new album. Check it out, it’ll blow your mind all over again 👍🔥🙏
The tiny little sequence Jon Lord plays at ~10:02 is a musical citation of the "Bumblebee Flight" by Rimski-Korsakov ;) Check out*The Mule* (esp. as a drummer yourself, you might like it)… ua-cam.com/video/lSrTrKFpAYE/v-deo.html

This is a great song, as is When A Blind Man Cries, Perfect Strangers, Hush. I genuinely cannot stand some of their more popular songs though, like Highway Star or Smoke on the Water.
Since Made in japan was not videotaped, this is the best recorded performance from MKII. Give a try and react to MKIII as well. Mistreated - CalJam was another epic live performance.

I’m writing this before seeing your reaction. I can’t wait! This is one of the best live performances. Ever…
I’m sure you’re going to love it
Thanks so much for swinging by and checking out the video! It was epic 🤘
Obviously Ian can pull off those insane high notes as well… ❤
@@HelmaOsmondNot Ian Gillis, Ian Gillan.
@@musashimiyamoto586 OMG, how did that happen? 🤣 Yes of course, it’s Ian Gillan! Thanks for correcting the typo ❤️
@@HelmaOsmond No worries, and sorry, I am a bit too "anal" sometimes.
The forbidden riff 😬 thanks for all the suggestions!
Wow!! Lucky you! I bet that was killer. Thanks for sharing and for the insight! Have a great one!
The live version of their concert in Stockholm 1970 is even better! Lasts 19 minutes and you get not bored for one second. And I'm not even a rock fan but a reggae fan
Nice to see a reaction from someone who knows what they are talking about
Really appreciate it! 😁
A masterpiece! Ian Gillan the vocalist wrote this to protest the Vietnam war! Haunting heart wrenching and ending in chaos just brilliant!!!!
Absolutely amazing song and performance! Phenomenal band! 🤘🏻
\it's a protest to the Cold War as stated by Ian Gillan
Ian Gillan said it was about the Cold War not Viet Nam
Born in 74 but i've known that song since I was a little baby 'cause my father would play it over and over. I didn't listen to it for years as I was a little bit fed up you know. ^^ Now my father has left us for other skies...I listen to it regularly and played it to my daughter. She is learning guitar and she loves it. Transmission is not a vain word man. Loved your reaction. Keep on rockin' ^^
Thanks so much for sharing the memories and swinging by the channel! So cool your daughter is learning guitar! The world needs more musicians! 🤘🏻
@@setonhillstudios Thanks Buddy. I;m a (bad) bass player and a french teacher. ** my daughter is pretty giifted on the guitar but she wants to be a doctor. The world needs doctors too. Hope she can be both musician and doctor. ^^
@@doksooli Once she becomes a doctor she can use that cash to fill the expensive habit of being a musician part time! 🤣 Perfect combination!
@@setonhillstudios Buy it ^^
Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple the holy triad of rock music🤘
Thanks for super reaction!🔥🔥🔥 My favorite Deep Purple songs are Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin', Speed King, Bloodsucker, Fireball, Fools, Strange Kind of Woman, Perfect Strangers, Bad Attitude, Dead or Alive, The Battle Rages On, Anya, Solitaire, Loosen My Strings, Clearly Quite Absurd, All the Time in the World, Time For Bedlam (all these songs are with Ian Gillan on vocals), Burn, Sail Away, Stormbringer, Lady Double Dealer, Soldier of Fortune (with David Coverdale on vocals), King of Dreams, The Cut Runs Deep, Love Conquers All (with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals).
Thanks so much for checking out the video and for all the suggestions!
They knew each other so wellas band members that it's telepathic you justb get in a groove.
The whole first Album Deep Purple. River Deep, Mountain Higher, Fireball and anything off Made in Japan
Sweet, thanks for the recommendations!
Yet another excellent reaction and the best version of this song is this live one! These dudes, Black Sabbath, and Led are the best from that era!
All so amazing! This performance was so good and they were bringing that 🔥🔥
… Rock music is explained like this: There is a lead guitar, an organ, a bass, a singer, a drummer... and there is DEEP PURPLE!! … And "Made in Japan" is the best damn live album in music history! … There is nothing more to say!! 🎸🎹🥁🎤
Mic drop! They’re absolutely fantastic!
@@setonhillstudios … Thanks! But you too 🤗👍🏻
There isn't much footage of them from back in the 70s, but check out anything from their live album Made In Japan, largely regarded as arguably the best live album of all time. Highway Star has some old video footage and synched with the excellent album audio. For Ian Paice star moments check out the studio versions of Burn and Lay Down Stay Down, such inventive drumming on those two. You'll love them!
Thanks so much! Can’t wait to dig into it! 🤘🏻
This is my favorite live!!!!
It’s so good!
yet they've done "Child in time" so much better at other times. If you haven't heard the version on "Made in Japan" you should check it out! Also the version (with video) from "Live in Denmark '72" is great too.
My favourite band. Every album , every song. Saw them live in 1985 , sensational.
I bet that was killer! Thanks for swinging by! They are absolutely phenomenal!
This live recording was made in a television studio, and the audience was under strict back then in the 70's
Gotcha! Yeah the audience looked like they weren’t allowed to get too excited! Amazing performance and top tier musicianship! 🤘🏻
@@setonhillstudios Yes public was told to stay quiet as it was recorded.
!!!GOODISM¡¡¡ Greetings from Argentina
Greetings!! So glad you enjoyed it! Deep Purple bringing that 🔥
DP - mark 2
Is the loudest band by decibels!
MORE DEEP PURPLE & RAINBOW ALSO PLEEEEEASE!! Ritchie Blackmore (both bands) is King 👑
Live version of "highway star" made in Japan is awesome!!!
Appreciate the suggestion and you stopping by the channel! What an absolute masterclass!
DP - are the father and the mother of the rock n roll ever!
So good! They were a phenomenal band with so much talent! Thanks for hanging out and sharing! 🤘🏻
Thanks for noticing the bass!!!
Roger Glover always overlooked. He's a song writer producer and awesome bassist.
This song is so iconic !!!! Each musician is fantastic !!!!
If you are into Ian Paice, you have to listen to "The Mule", especially the live version from Copenhagen 1972. That will give you a drumgasm...
I heard that was 🔥 Definitely on the list to check out! Thanks for the suggestion!
flight of the rat is my favorite song
Appreciate the suggestion! Gotta check it out!
See their 'Mandrake Root' live for controlled chaos; it will blow your mind.
Thanks for the suggestion! Gotta check out more for sure! 🤘🏻
To really get into Deep Purple you must listen to the "Made In Japan" album, P.S. The version of Child in time on there is EPIC! 🤘
Masters of their craft each and everyone of them in this lineup the best of the best even today
💯 Such killer musicians and they were on 🔥 for this performance! 🤘🏻
@@setonhillstudios Back when you needed to be a good musisian and not just look like i model to have a career :) they took pride in their craft unlike most today unfortunately.
@@neverlandxx73 A lot of TRUTH to that! I think technology has also done alot of damage to people learning how to master their instruments! 🤘🏻
Love the song and I've seen at least a dozen reaction vids to it. You win.
Appreciate that!
Appreciate the info! Gotta check that out! Have a great one!
Talent, at its best , i listen to this in high school in Scotland, unbelievable Talent, top of their game
Well said! You can just watch in awe! Have a great one and thanks for watching!
For me it's the whole Deep Purple In rock album... Personal faves, next to Child in time ofc being Living wreck and Into the fire, just one right after the other.
Sweet, I bet they’re amazing!
@@setonhillstudios it's just full on summer vibe. The whole album, just go on a drive on a summer day and let go...
The audience looked like they didn’t understand what was happening. But it was 1970 and music like this was like from outer space compared to what was done before. Gillan had unbelievable range back then. And they are still touring despite doing the Long Goodbye Tour couple years back. One of my all time favourite bands for sure.
True, they were definitely innovators! Crazy to think they’re still out there doing their thing 🤯
Love your analysis 😊 I was 10 years old when this came out and Ian Paice was my favourite drummer , who inspired me so much . The Buddy Rich of Rock
Thanks so much! He’s such a great drummer!
The top 3 of the Dutch top 2000 have been for years : child in time, stairway to heaven and bohemian rhapsody.
Go to their "Made In Japan" album to a song called "The Mule" and hear an epic drum solo by Ian Paice.
Awesome! Appreciate the suggestion!
Love the reaction. This dude gets it.
Really appreciate that! Incredible band with so much talent! Thanks for watching!
@@setonhillstudios yeah, my favorite singer of all time.

Today May 18 2024 listen "Child In Time" incredible music. I love this Band ! Epic song ! 1970 ? Past or Future ?
Good job, cheers
Thanks so much! They brought the 🔥 on this one! Have a great one!
1960-70s is the best style of music of all genre including hard rock !!! Though in DP, there's personal conflict between Gillan and Blackmore that made them set apart, I disregard this. I love their work and noone can change Blackmore. Neither can Gillan! Without them, it's not deep purple!
This performance was straight 🔥 🔥 I have to check out more of their stuff because their talent is through the roof! Thanks for watching!
They are a killer band for sure! Thanks for all the suggestions!
Sweet! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for hanging out with us for a bit! Definitely have to check out more Deep Purple here on the channel! 🤘🏻
I strongly recommend the live album Made in Japan. It's peak Deep Purple.
I bet it’s epic!
Great reaction thanks 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for watching! Incredible performance!
My favorite is Lazy, then Space Truckin.
Yea it’s a shame, they deserved all the notoriety and more!
I live in Canada and everyone I knew loved Deep Purple in the studio but much more live they were incredible
13:10 watch the drummers hands. He lost his stick for a moment😅
I must have missed that! EPIC! He’s such a beast!
Saw them 2 times 1985. The Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. Perfect strangers tour Dallas. 1985.
So awesome! I bet it was amazing!
I love Bill Ward from Black Sabbath
Yeah we gotta check out some Black Sabbath here on the channel! They have some great tunes! 🤘🏻

My favourite Deep Purple song is Fireball
Gotta check that out! Thanks so much! 🔥

Since Made in japan was not videotaped, this is the best recorded performance from MKII.
Give a try and react to MKIII as well. Mistreated - CalJam was another epic live performance.

I disagree. The best videoed version would be that from "Live in Denmark '72". This tv studio version feels a little contrived.
