This was recorded live for a TV show. The audience was told by the TV people not to react until after the song was over because they didn't want any audience noise on the recording. That's why looked like they did.
Bro, you should check out this collaboration. Who Cares - out of my mind. It’s Tony Illomi - Black Sabbath Ian Gillan and John Lord-Deep Purple Jason Newsted - Metallica Nicko McBrain - Iron Maiden You can thank me Later for this one. Gillan still got the chops!
I was fortunate enough to see him singing with Black Sabbath in the 80's, didn't know what a privilege it was at the time , I was 13 or 14, but i learnt. This live version is a personal favourite of mine ,and love checking out reactions to it .
I had the midwives play this song when I was giving birth to my youngest daughter at home...in 1986. Child in Time is song perfection...and the first thing I wanted my child to hear! ( she ended up playing the drums and the violin as well as writing lyrics and starting her own rap duo)
An incredible group of musicians: Ian Gillan (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). All legends, in my opinion.
You nailed it my friend ..A wall of sound... and the answer is yes they performed this song day in and day out for five years and big Ian nailed it every time From 1969 to early 1974.. Listen to the made in Japan version gillan gets his screams even higher.
If you wanna see a great version of this song, listen to Child In Time on the album called ‘Made In Japan’, such a brilliant guitar solo by Ritchie Blackmore
Back to my teenage years. I grew up with hardrock. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the founders of hardrock. The hairy scream at his best. The public doesn’t seem to like it very much but I do. The guitar player is Richie Blackmore. You know him also from Rainbow.
The audience wasn't allowed, by the tv producers, to make any movements or sounds during the song. Something to do with the oldtimey cameras and/or sound equipment. Or maybe they (the producers) just had some sticks up their butts. 😀
@@Covenantt666 I used to know somebody that worked as a tv set musician in those times (a saxophonist), and it's a bit of both. Spectators going wild wouldn't go down well with a conservative audience at home. And the intake was BAD. They couldn't really determine the nature of the audience and their voice beforehand, and thus the amount of "shielding" they would have needed for the band (given that microphones at the time weren't the best). So they avoided the problem entirely.
This was a TV performance, most likely on one of the music shows in Britain at the time, and there were probably other performers on too and the audience may not have been there to see Deep Purple hence they would look bored. This is the case in many older live performance videos of British rock/metal bands. That or they were just really high, which also was the case most of the time.
I heard that Ian Gillan would decide before the performance whether he could perform that song that night , depending on how his voice was at the time . It was strain on him.
I only saw them live once and they were every bit as good as you see there. So loud it left my ears ringing for days, but worth it! Great reaction, Tommy.
If you like the guitarist's work, I urge you to check out his next band called "Rainbow" with Ronnie James Dio on vocals, specifically a song called "Stargazer".
Several reactors have commented on the audience , now they could have been stunned by how good it was and it was new back then ? Or more likely it was a random TV studio audience and they were following instructions and were not comfortable to react freely ? or something else ? But it was a classic performance by master musicians.......
Ian Gillan does it every time on this song there’s many live concerts with this song he sang it until he could no longer hit the super high notes and they just made a new album last year called Woosh and if you listen to the studio version of Child In Time he sings it more controlled not as aggressive in live and that’s probably why it sounds way better live cause he strains but there’s a live version of Child In Time from 1969 where Ian sings it similar to the studio where he’s not straining so much so the song kind of sounds calmer, it’s on UA-cam but his vocals are ridiculously good listen to Hallelujah if you get a chance or Ian Gillan singing Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar 1970 his vocals are amazing
Ian Gillan (the singer) began performing this song in 1969 in front of a classical orchestra. That was his absolute singing peak. Every subsequent year his range diminished and he began yelling instead of singing. That being said, until 1984, Ian Gillan had a MASSIVE set of pipes, but he blew out his voice on Black Sabbath's Born Again tour in 1983/1984 and was never the same again after that.
I would say the whole band and Gillan too had its peak during the tour in Japan as we can hear on the live album "Made in Japan". But thats just my opinion.
Great reaction. As you mention in the video, every member delivered. "Mayhem" = jamming, synergy, trying to reach a higher level. If only record companies/labels allowed it nowadays (glad YT and other platforms are enabling new generations to discover/explore).
The amazing thing is that this song was recorded in 1970. And it has not lost any of its greatness. Unfortunately, Ian Gillan is not performing this song since the mid nineties. Too much strain on his voice.
If you're a product of the 60's (1960's that is) and you're a rivet-head like me, this is one of the iconic Purple Tunes (along with Highway Star). Never grows old - just like me. LOL. I think it's my 8th birthday in a couple of months!! Nice reaction, Tommy Lad. In alphabetical order: Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord (RIP), Paice.
Another fine reaction, sir! 😊 I first heard this particular tune a very long time ago and was kind of shocked by the “screaming” and wondered how Ian could possibly provide those vocals without something bleeding, lol. Certainly, it’s an old school rock tune that was pretty amazing at the time and is still a good listen. I grew up when some really good bands were coming up. Ahhh, the nostalgia. 😊 Keep up your good work, man!
In my opinion the studio version is even better but this is a great performance still. Deep Purple has had a lot of different formations (referred as "Marks"), but this was arguably the best of all, the MKII. Ian Paice on drums, Roger Glover on bass, Ritchie Blackmore on guitars, Jon Lord on keyboards and Ian Gillan on vocals. Check out Highway Star either studio on in the Made In Japan live album.
You can just tell that the audience were more of a rich crowd and probably not real fans. The rich have to be a part of everything. Believe me as someone from that time, I can assure you, that's not how real Deep Purple fans reacted.
The reason that the crowd is stoic is because it was a BBC broadcast and the crowd was instructed not to react. The album Made in Japan by Purple is considered one of the best live albums of all time. In studio the sound is almost boring. Live is something else entirely. Smoke on the Water on Made in Japan is a completely different song than Machine Head. I will take an amazing live band every time.
There's another video which is longer & BETTER. I can't believe you reacted to this masterpiece before hearing the recorded version. It's TEN times what this performance is. 😐
Interesting observation about bebop there was a review that likened them to a new version of the Bennie Goodman 5. Superb musicians do yourself a favor buy a copy of Made In Japan
I love deep purple, but this isn't one of my favorite, it's a good moody listen once in awhile. Check out just about anything from the Machine Head album, mostly bangers but blind man is an awesome soul piece.
Do "Smoke on the Water" from "Made in Japan". Best version ever! ua-cam.com/video/jlHEdkL1VoM/v-deo.html I have never seen a reaction on UA-cam to this version before.
You should try a chilean band called "Los Jaivas" i recommend "La poderosa Muerte" o maybe "Tarka y Ocarina", a bit difficult to define their music style, some people match them with Pink Floyd, I am not sure if that is accurate. Anyway, nice channel! 👌
Great reaction !! Agonizies of War !! Classic...
Very good Interpretation, thank you!

Silly instructions
@@tallycahamuhlhetru26 I'm really glad the audience cooperated so we could hear every note clearly! It is a masterpiece!
Classic! RIP John Lord (Keyboards)
Ian Gillian is incredible, this performance is iconic.
Gillan, not Gillian.

Jon Lord was just on another level that just a handful of other keyboardists have reached.
Criminally underrated as well
Bro, on another level? Wtf?
Master class in dynamics . Something lacking in today's music.
One of the greatest songs ever made. And I'm not a massive Deep Purple fan. But this song is way beyond special
yeah top 3 maybe 1..
Oh, what a song! This DP lineup is simply amazing!
Great reaction!
Masterpiece
Great reaction! These guys are monsters, even more on the stage.
The roots of metal. What a performance

Amazing Deep Purple MKII
Deep Purple, Lazy, from the album Machine Head. An awesome song as well.

Rabbit hole entered. Everything on Machine Head and In Rock are worthy of a reaction.
🔥⚽ FIREBALL is a fine LP as well
Welcome to the Purple-people, we are the happiest ones :-)

Great reaction, mate . . . . for me, when the whole band stops at the same time on a sixpence, after going six-nowt, goosebumps !
Ah yeah! I forgot to mention that afterwards! That was great!
This was recorded in the Granada tv studios in Manchester sitting at the back in the audience in a pink top is the football legend George Best

This song should be as well known as Stairway, Hey Jude, Give Me Shelter, Reign O’er me etc. I guess in some parts of the world it is.

Brit's were known for their restrained emotions, back in the day.

Ah that makes sense
Ian Gillian the vocalist, eventually refused to sing this song on tour, as it was too much for his vocal track
That was the most improvised version of a song that sounded better but the same as the studio version. Tell me they weren’t on speed lol
There's another video which is longer & BETTER.

if the audience realized they just witnessed birth of an all time hymn ?
And they never play it twice exactly the same
Ian Gillian Sang the part of Jesus on the Original sound track of "Jesus Christ Superstar"
No, Ian Gillan did. And it wasn't a "sound track" it was a recording, not a film.

The song was about the Vietnam War!
It was. Also that year in May, four students were shot dead at Kent State University by the National Guard.
