Ive always absolutely loved the sound of Mikes TAMA drums. They always sound so perfect. That snare sound makes me salivate. Can never quite figure out of its the drums, the tuning, the recording techniques or just his playing but his drums never sound over processed or thin sounding like many other metal drummers. They have punch and attack while still sounding warm and full.
I've read someone comment years ago that Portnoy is a rock n roll drummer in a prog metal band, and I still think that is the most accurate description of this legendary drummer.
If I hadn't heard some drummer dude cover Lines in the Sand some 8 years ago at an interschool music competition, my life would've been very different today. I wasn't aware this kind of drumming was humanly possible, and Mike Portnoy opened my eyes to a world I've been consumed by ever since.
When i heard the song "hold me under" years and years ago when metal drumming of the time was like megadeath, metallica, and the like, i had my moment just like that! Holy crap he makes the drums sing in a way u never thought possible! Quite possibly paved the way to all the crazy drumming of today!!!
Check out Matt Garstka from Animals as Leaders. Your perception of the musical lexicon will likely be further shifted. I recommend also looking into his project with Casimir Liberski, particularly a song called "violente absinthe"
Just came here straight from watching Neil Peart's 1988 Birmingham Solo 2022 Remaster. Both absolute masters of their art. I'd argue equally in their own distinct styles. Absolute perfection 👌🏼👌🏼
This man changed my point of view for music since I first heard him playing some DT songs. I never notice drums much in metal/rock songs(mainly because guitars love), and I was fan of this kind of music for years before even knowing DT. For me he's the best drummer ever and fantastic person.
Love Mike portnoy and will always miss him in dream theater. I grew up with them and the first album I heard was images and words. They are still great but portnoy will always have a special place in my heart as a drummer 😎👌👏
Shit, you need to open your eyes more. There are plenty better than Portnoy, hate to be the bubble burster. Just drummers alone, Danny Carey is leaps and bounds a better musician/drummer than Portnoy. Watch him, you'll understand why it's not even close.
Portnoy is one of the best songwriters in the guise of a drummer. It is not easy to be technical as well as accessible. He is a genius at that. There will be many drummers who might be "technically" better but very few who can surpass him as a musician.
I agree. What I love about Portnoy is that his grooves make it easy to follow the odd time signatures, making his DT records really accessible for a wide audience
I’m a guitar player, always have been, but there’s something more interesting and satisfying about watching drum cams as opposed to guitar only shots. Maybe It’s because I know less about the drums. But either way it’s so cool to see.
As a person that started as mainly a drummer then switched to guitar, I think it’s because drummers are always going hard. Like there are more chill guitar parts to make the songs more expressive, which could be why playthroughs are a little less interesting, whereas drums are the backbone so they rarely ever have a dull moment. A good example of this would probably be Daylily by movements. I’d watch a drum cover of that song but not a guitar cover. That being said when it comes to prog I’d watch both just cuz parts are so well rounded throughout the band. That’s just my theory tho as to why drum covers are a little more interesting to watch.
This is not about football team fans, it is about music, how a musician expresses his art and spirit, and also influencing others. This has nothing to do with how high you use the cymbals or how many beats per minute you can achieve ... so, thank you Mr. Portnoy for your great legacy!

well fact is that playing drums is much more "visual" than playing guitar, so maybe that's the reason.
