      I know it's probably a long shot, but could you do consider feature a deathcore/metalcore or extreme metal drummer at some point? An "extreme" session? Like Anthony Barone, Bryce Butler, Austin Archey, Spencer Prewett, John Longstreth etc.

      Mike, you're always such a blast to listen to. I've always treasured your contributions to music, and also your taste in music, your struggle with OCD (something I also contend with), and just your delightful outlook on life.
      This track brings me back to early 2002. Argentina, my country, was going through the worst crisis in its history (so far), and I was a 17-year-old in his first year of Uni. A dear friend used to drive me every morning, and we played our favorite CDs on the car stereo - which insisted on skipping every time we hit a bump. Long story short, he put Images and Words on, and it was SUCH a tastemaking record for me!
      From then, it was a short road to the rest of DT's discography, and it wasn't long until SDOIT came out - which was also instrumental for me getting into Tool. Love ya, Mike, always will!

      The cynic in me hopes they didn't just sack mangini and get Portnoy back cause their live shows weren't selling like they used to. I hope they thought that since the band is 40 in 2025 - they wanted to do one more album and tour with the "classic" line up and asked Mangini if he would agree to step down .. and din't just flat out sack him.

    As a guy who plays guitar, watching Mike on the drums is like watching Steve Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughan play. You're watching an artist who has complete mastery of his instrument and can play and produce whatever he damn pleases. There's a special level of appreciation reserved for a person who spent unquantifiable hours mastering their craft. This skill is as much art as a Van Gogh painting.

      I really like Mike's knowledge and he's playing - but there are way other many drummers out there - just have never ever understood why so many people are saying he's the best, the only one etc. Yes, he's really a good one, but I wouldn't put him higher than any other great drummers...

    • @Draugheim
      @Draugheim Рік тому +28

      @@belanagy5595 Because he's just as much a musician as he is a drummer. He made/makes incredible drum parts that not only follow the songs but adds to it. Sometimes it feels like the drums are the center of the songs, where normally vocals or guitars are. In the best way possible. He also has a fantastic groove thats consistent through it all, no matter how technical it gets etc.
      What i also liked about portnoy is that he was a metalhead first. And since he was a founding member and had a say in everything they did it always felt like a metalband underneath all the other genres they flirt with. They kind of lost this when he quit.
      But theres another very important thing about portnoy, that they lost back when he quit: his showmanship. He was the face and charisma of the band. Their show (and interviews and whatnot) was so much more entertaining just because he brought that.. Energy to the stage.

      @@belanagy5595fully agree. I mean just look at the first response you got, “because he’s just as much a musician as he is a drummer”. Um, ok? 😂 like there isn’t a entire plethora of the greats you could say that about. Nerds who grew up greasing their own skin flutes while playing dungeons and dragons to the sound of Dream Theatre are obsessed with this stoner hairball. Tell me Thomas Lang, or Matt Garstka, or Larnell Lewis aren’t just as much collaborative musicians as they are drummers.
      What a nonsense comment.

      @@ClihtYeastwoodThanks for this - actually everyone has their opinion and we have to respect it - but still believe Mike is a little bit overhyped, though I understand he's the engine of the band (but he did the same job in the Winery Dogs), but we could mention also a name like Ian Paice as well...without him Deep Purple wouldn't be like the band they have just became...and there are tons of other good examples... and we didn't even sailored to the ocean of jazz :)

    For those who don't already know and didn't notice it. Mike always plays with just his left stick backwards. He likes the more full and heavy sound you get on the snare. He uses his signature black sticks with white tips, which makes it a bit easier to see.

    • @Celari
      @Celari Рік тому +19

      He also does stick swirls to switch it up mid beat occasionally depending on what type of sound he wants.

    • @closinginonclosure
      @closinginonclosure Рік тому +12

      @@Celari Yep, and it's very purposeful and intentional. Meaning it not something he just randomly does on a whim. He'll do it specifically for certain part of certain songs, and do it consistently, every time he plays the song. You could liken it to a painter who was painting and entire object with standard blue, and then switches to a different blue that's barely a shade different, just to add one small detail that the lamen may not even notice or pick out.
      It's that artistry and attention to detail that are just a couple of the qualities that make Portnoy one of the GOATS behind a kit. He's a true pro with a vast toolbox. Always a pleasure to watch him play. Makes it look like tying a pair if shoes every time.

    • @closinginonclosure
      @closinginonclosure Рік тому +10

      @@kooijbasYep, he's been doing it for as long as I remember. 5:49 is just one example. He switches to standard grip just for the single crash, so it sounds brighter. Does one hit of the snare after, as he didn't have the time to switch his stick back first, but immediately reverts back to backwards stick between beats. From time to time he will to stick spins for show that aren't functional and he's just into his playing and having fun. But most are functional and it's him switching the stick position. Especially when it's with his left hand.

    Wow, amazing. I love how Mike plays. Such clean playing. nice cymbals use, no barrage of cymbal sounds like some modern metal drummers, using accents on quarter notes, and simple snare displacement to change the feel of the groove, without making it feel more busy or put focus on the drums over the song. The fills are super nice, concise and musical. Most of it is just straight groove playing. His drumming really accentuates the song. I love Mike M too, but I am super happy with MP back in Dream Theater!

    What’s great about Mike, common in truly great musicians, is that you don’t need to be a drummer to appreciate him. His creativity is second to none and he always manages to make any song more interesting while fitting with the whole. It seems like this concept is lost on many more technically proficient drummers whose parts sound boring by comparison. This is what elevates Mike’s playing to art IMHO (as a guitar player).
