I think everything from 1:53 to 4:44 is one of the best phrases in prog-metal history. Everything, the chords, the notes, the solos, the drum fills. Each and every part of this section is absolutely everything great about prog-metal, in 2-3 mins.
I just can't stop from turning to 1:53 just listen to this section again and again and again. I agree with everything you said about that part. can't just express how it makes me feel but I am so addicted to that part :)
The most insane thing is that, unlikely a jam session, they can perfectly recreate this time and time again. Just remembering one of these songs would be a hand full for most :x Let alone a set list xD
no shit. if aliens invade and ask me for one reason why humans should continue to exist, this piece will be on the very top of my list to show. This, 9th symphony and another 2, 3 songs/films
Also still listening in 2020! There's just something about Mike Portnoy on drums -- so organic, so fluid, so perfect -- kinda like John Petrucci on guitar! There's more brains on this stage than in some small countries!
Musical fads come and go, styles drift in and out of style, but prog does seem to endure, does it not? Music for thinking people! Music is math you can hear.

I was a jazz performance major around 2003 at UArts and one day Jordan Rudess gave a clinc/masterclass and it was the best 3 hour lecture I ever sat through.
That guitar lick at 3:00 is easily one of the best prog-metal moments. It's in 7/8, but it's melodic, emotional and captures everything that genre is truly capable of (in the middle of all the madness in the rest of the song)
I agree. I don't like his more recent tones. And I think he'd sound better switching to Duncans over DiMarzios. He was using a Crunch Lab at this show. The best of the Petrucci pickups.
every song from LTE and Dream Theater has always just been an entire experience and almost an escape from reality. My mind transports any time I hear a song by them.. I am in awe at the time changes and just the overall quality. I hope both bands go on to be remembered for their greatness honestly. So glad I finally got some good headphones to listen to them on, but I will always remember being 14 and jamming out with some Skullcandy earbuds in my room listening to them while I spent hours drawing and chilling out. They're inspirational.
I totally dig this progressive metal. Don't see too many musicians use a Chapman Stick to play this type of music. These guys are the best in their field!!!
LTE 1,2, and 3! My god, aren't we lucky! The magic of these musical geniuses confound and astound, our logical brains, and raise us up to a higher plane. Tony, John, Jordan, and MP; I am truly, truly grateful for thee! Ahhhhh yes! Here we go again...
Awesome drumming as usual. Incredible musicians to go through all those time signatures and not get lost. Easy to see they do their homework and practice..a lot!!!
Still watching and it's 2023 here. Up to 6.7 million views now. So glad the reunion and tour took place. The new music is phenomenal yet the older stuff here is absolutely timeless.
No idea how the rest of em do it but Rudess has an iPad with sheet music attached to his rotating keyboard rig. Doesn't make his stuff any less impressive tho!
You practice until you don't even think about it anymore. Like you don't have to remember how to move your legs when you run, you just run it's just there now.
You do realize you’re including Bach, Mozart, Stravinsky, John Coltrane, and you know, most of the western musical cannon. It IS the best instrumental metal no doubt tho.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! that's all I got. I just sat here awestruck when I realized how badass the rest of this album is going to be if this is the litmus test. Man this song is good!

I've been listening to music since 72 and Sabbath was around you guys are absolutely amazing Dynamic phenomenal I think Mike Portnoy is the best drummer in the world in John Petrucci is right there with the rest of the great guitarists
I’ve listened to and admired this for years but this is the first time seeing it on video. Holy shit. It’s even better if that’s possible. It’s like watching Rush in their heyday. Who else can do something like this??
it is named "When the water breaks", because while recording, Petrucci's wife went into labor. At 13:14 is the part where he had to leave to be with her.
All true. In the middle of the recording sessions, Petrucci had to leave the studio when he got word that his pregnant wife had gone into labor. This left the other three band members to carry on recording by themselves. This is how "When the Water Breaks" got its name, for it was the song the band were working on when Petrucci got the news. The song contains a baby sound effect (a "baby soundscape", according to keyboardist Jordan Rudess) to mark the particular section the band had been writing upon Petrucci's departure. In Petrucci's absence Levin, Rudess and drummer Mike Portnoy recorded dozens of completely improvised jams, many of which would eventually be released on the 2007 album Spontaneous Combustion under the group name Liquid Trio Experiment. As such, "914" is the only song on the album which did not feature Petrucci. Portnoy alluded to the jams in the liner notes, stating that "if you dig this, there is A LOT more where it came from..." When Petrucci returned to the studio in November, he wrote and recorded guitar parts for two of these improvisations: "Chewbacca" and "Liquid Dreams". For "Chewbacca" in particular, he took the time to learn several of Rudess's improvised melodies and doubled them on guitar, which in Portnoy's words "(gave) the illusion of written composition".
From drummer perspective, Portnoy might not have the most advance technique out there, but his musicality alone is set him apart from others. He can make the most basic groove to be catchy as hell in the right time and the right place. Plus he knew what a good drum sounds like so combine both you'll get the most satisfying tune.
Every day, I listen to this song as I have already said here. Each time, I say to myself: Too many musical notes in these 18 minutes. But they are all necessary, indispensable and just in their place. I conclude that God Exists! The question remains : where are these four great guys?
Incredible, amazing performance. But I have to say, Mike Portnoy stands up as a monster of drums. His cleanliness, his proficienship, his musical rendition of such hard drummming creation makes me wonder how can he be such a perfect musician. Wonderful work.
I came here to watch some of Petrucci, but omg... Mike Portnoy what a man!! Unbelievable Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin too! Hope we can see more of this in future
After 15 years, I've finally found that post-metropolis pt2 sound. Came here from Acid Rain which I've loved for forever. So happy I stumbled upon this thankyou OP =-)
is this a fucking ALL STARS of music or what??
Still blows my mind to this day the amount of mental and physical endurance it took to perform this.
Yet they made it look effortless!!!
You know I came to realize it also a way to honor the main theme of the song. Thanks for your observation
Its impressive what musicians who actually love music can do.
And writing it!
And during a concert 2:30 hours long!
One of the greatest Rock/Metal instrumental songs in history.

Pettrucci and Rudess should ditch that other band and do THIS full time
i'm watching while my pregnant gf is watching vaginal birth videos on her phone. hahaha. i guess we all have our own way of preparing.
I thought I was a musician. Now I'd be happy to carry their equipment for them
HAHA cute , good one.
I give back what God gave me, but He certainly didn't give me what THESE guys have! :D

I'm NOT a musician. So I'll carry your equipment then - that way I get a chance to get close to LTE

Not sure what is more legendary, Tony Levins bass playing or his mustache.
too bad he made mistake at 09:50

He's a legendary alien
His mustache are playing the bass through his hands actually

The amount of skill to play this song in one take is unreal, so happy they did LTE3
There’s way so much virtuosity in a single stage. Mike, John, Tony and Jordan are true masters of their instruments. What a great piece.
Who's come here after LTE3 reunion just confirmed ?
Yep! I can already tell that this next one is gonna be just as amazing as the first two!
Hello there 👋

That short LTE3 trailer is sooo intense. Can't wait to be amazed again by these genius.

Indeed, and the first few minutes of that timespan would not be out of character on Marillion's Misplaced Childhood album.
It makes me cry, it's so emotional.
Best bit of music ever written.

This is just a jam session with one of the best guitarists, one of the best keyboardists, one of the best drummers and one of the best bassists.

Just because a song is musically complex, doesn't mean it's bad.
Doesn't mean it's good either, though.
Complex? christ I just solved string theory listening to this.

There is absolutely no performance at all that can fully demonstrate the maximum potential of virtuosos like this song
As much as I love progressive metal classical music so far has the most virtuosic music.
can you give me some examples?
the paganini caprices, many piano works by Liszt, Rachmaninoffs piano concertos... just to name a few
one really great and really, really difficult piano piece is Stravinsky's piano transcription of Petrushka
ok thanks man
