yeah when you play a song a million times, you get more relaxed over time. I remember some metal songs I used to be out of breath and stressed, now I can play a lot like Mike does here

I was sad when he left dream theater but never mad at him. I was always hoping that he'd come back and just being blessed by him coming back is amazing

I learned this song on expert long before I got myself a real kit, and once I finally got one it was the first thing I attempted to play on it. Took awhile to adjust (and the nonstop double pedal during the instrumental break still gives me trouble) but it's a banger! Also it made me acutely aware of how Portnoy's mixed it up a bit over the years since the original recording, he's got some new grooves in this video!
Not to take away from the magic, but one of the reasons for multiple camera angles in addition to creating movement and visual interest in editing is to also create spots for different takes. Not to say that Mike couldn't do this in one take, but it would take FAR longer to record the video if they had to stop and redo the entire thing every time something wasn't perfect. There is a good chance that this video is half a dozen or more different takes punched together like you would do on a record.

I don't think there's a lot of technical effort on this particular song. The licks are quite repetitive and overall, esp. with double kick usage, not that hard. a lot of cymbal work and odd-sounding-yet-straight cymbal work. but in terms of groove and flow - oh hell yeah he's in it 110%.
Drumeo, you should use this song in the 'Hears for the first time' feature and watch whoever you give it to melt before you. Actually thinking about it would be good to see what another pro drummer comes up with that has not heard this before! MP is the GOAT.
I'd like to hear someone like Vinnie Colaiuta, Billy Cobham, Steve Smith or Bobby Jarzombek try to play this song in a "Hears for the first time" feature. I'm pretty sure they'd pull this off in 3-4 takes max.
man...I don't know. hearing Mike play these songs again just warms my heart. it genuinely feels like home. I don't care about who is the better drummer, both Portnoy and Mangini are incredible in their own right, but for me having Portnoy back in Dream Theater just feels right. can't wait to hear some new music!
Agree, mangini is great and I liked all his albums, but still great to see portnoy back. And know it will be a great album, if it is as good as some of the older ones we will just have to wait and hear. But I really like all their album, some better then others but none of them bad
Agreed. Mangini is a fucking Beast but i think the only drummer for DT is Portnoy and Portnoy only. Just like Petrucci or Myung. Nobody can replace them.
Portnoy was arguably at least ten years ahead of everyone else on sharing drum playthrough videos on the Internet and on DVD. Not only that, his website from almost 25 years ago would let you play his drum kit by clicking on it. Very innovative.
There are so many insane drummers out there, Eloy plays with such raw power but also precision, Mario Duplantier is like a creative mad scientist, Estepario just blows my mind with his 32 note fills and quadruple pedal action, Austin Archey mastered the art of machine gun drumming... but when I get asked who's my favorite drummer my brain can't come up with another answer other than Mike Portnoy. For me he's the GOAT for many different reasons, and I don't mind if it's a cliche answer, it's just what I feel. Legendary!
Marco Minneman is right up there with the likes of Portnoy, Danny Carey, and Tomas Haake, I can't really pick just one though. Marco essentially turned down the Dream Theater gig when Portnoy ventured into other things.

His solo stuff is good and underlooked for sure and he's played on some bangers, but it's clear why he's not near the other guys' level in terms of solidifying himself as an all-time favorite
I feel the same. In my mind it's because his Portnoys drumming, while complex, has an air of accessibility, you can understand it without churning your brain. It sounds human.
This is what makes a drummer great, not only the talent, the difficulty in what he is playing but also that he has TOTAL control over the instrument all the time. AMAZING.
This song being on Rock Band 2 is one of the reasons why I started playing drums. It's a fun song to play and it's still my favorite Dream Theater song.
He's definitely mixing up the fills a bit here and adding a little flair in spots that isn't in the studio version. Awesome to hear Mike doing a couple new things on such an iconic drum track. 😁

Immaculate perfection, which is in no way surprising. I really liked Mike Mangini, but knowing that Mike Portnoy is back in Dream Theater made me more giddy than i have been since my teen years!
Mike is such a percussive drummer that if you hear without seeing it, you may assume that there are percussionists doing stuff to the music apart from the drummer itself. It's just crazy how creative, techinical, fast, yet melodic he is. I am a guitarrist, but my music hero is definatelly Mike. I hope someday I can shake hands with this guy and that will be me zeroing life.
For sure, he left right around the time when they started to seriously lose it. Definitely not a coincidence. Stoked what they've might got in store now that they're reunited.

Mike Portnoy doesn't know it, but he taught me to play the drumset at the age of 11. The Images and Words album was melted into my CD player for a year straight as I painstakingly learned the entire album. I can still remember every beat of this song, as well. My heart broke in 2010 when he left Dream Theater so, needless to say, I am incredibly excited to hear the next DT album. I know he's going to kill it.

Usually kits this big just feel stupid and unnecessary, but Mike's playing really justifies it. The little accents he hits with the different cymbals adds so much to the song.

Funny thing about Mike is he makes things look so effortless and easy that the untrained eye may understate the incredible skill, technicality, presicion and timing, AWESOME!
Mangini may be more technical, but Portnoy plays with more FEEL. And that’s what Dream Theater has been missing these last few albums. Well that and another songwriter. Thankfully Portnoy is back in the saddle again.
I appreciate both Mike's for their contributions to the band but I've always said that MM plays by knowing what to play next and MP plays by feeling what to play next.

Definitely agree with you on all points - especially with the songwriting. Portnoy gives DT a bit of edge due to his influences. Plus I think with him being absent there's been an imbalance in the basic songwriting, as it's been left to Petrucci and Rudess. As much as I love Jordan as a player, his range as a composer is rather limited and seems rather cheesy (which explains the Astonishing, which has a strong blue cheese smell - and not in a good way). I hope that things have clicked back into place on this new album, because I've found most of the last 5 albums to be largely uninspired.
Dream Theater. Such a legendary group. John Petrucci, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. John Myung, one of the greatest bassists of all time. Jordan Rudess, one of the greatest key players of all time. Mike Portnoy, one of the greatest drummers of all time. and James LaBrie.
This is so crazy how they were able to put the feeling of a panic attack into a song. The Lyrics basically explain what a panic attack feels like and the song change the more it goes and you calm down.
Portnoy's style of playing is great because he always expends the perfect amount of energy. All the cymbal work and tom fills keep this song super interesting.
The entire album means a lot to me, and watching again Mike playing DT songs is simply amazing. Welcome back to the family Mike, we were waiting for you 🤟
Dude there are so many great drummers right now. Brann Dailor, Mario Duplantier, Eloy Casagrande, Daniel Erlandsson, Tomas Haake, Brooks Wackerman, Derek Roddy, Dirk Verbeuren... List just goes on. But all that great drummers just 1 greatest and that one is mighty Mike Portnoy... He is just simply amazing...
I have always thought the same, since I heard Panic Attack and Never Enough, I could notice a certain influence from Muse which seemed like an excellent combination
MP playing along to Dream Theater songs. All is right with the world once again. Also shows why he is so good. He's just not keeping time with the music but he's adding a lot to it, bringing the drums up front and making them as much a part of the song as the guitar and vocals are.
Outstanding. I want to see him play Mangini's parts. I personally think that Mangini is better technically, but Portnoy brings a passion to the kit that gives the music a different kind of energy and feel.
@@bvq330 Well, MP is very musical. This playthrough was pretty different to the original recording. The essence of the original is all there, but the details are different, he was trying out new grooves and fills at several different parts. I imagine that's how he'll approach Mangini's tracks. Even if he can't play a song exactly as MM did, he'll have no trouble figuring out a variant that is functionally the same in terms of how it serves the song, and then he'll mix up the details to suit his style.
Great timing on this upload! I've been binging Dream Theater lately... well it's been the bulk of my listening since like September anyway lol cool that Portnoy's back. I look forward to whatever these guys get up to next :)
His kit, shorts, shirt, beard, and even the lighting are all the colour Blue. Considering being surrounded by the calming effects of this colour; I doubt a real panic-attack would ever happen.

Funny thing about Mike is he makes things look so effortless and easy that the untrained eye may understate the incredible skill, technicality, presicion and timing, AWESOME!
Mangini may be more technical, but Portnoy plays with more FEEL. And that’s what Dream Theater has been missing these last few albums. Well that and another songwriter. Thankfully Portnoy is back in the saddle again.
I appreciate both Mike's for their contributions to the band but I've always said that MM plays by knowing what to play next and MP plays by feeling what to play next.

Definitely agree with you on all points - especially with the songwriting. Portnoy gives DT a bit of edge due to his influences. Plus I think with him being absent there's been an imbalance in the basic songwriting, as it's been left to Petrucci and Rudess. As much as I love Jordan as a player, his range as a composer is rather limited and seems rather cheesy (which explains the Astonishing, which has a strong blue cheese smell - and not in a good way). I hope that things have clicked back into place on this new album, because I've found most of the last 5 albums to be largely uninspired.

This is so crazy how they were able to put the feeling of a panic attack into a song. The Lyrics basically explain what a panic attack feels like and the song change the more it goes and you calm down.

Portnoy's style of playing is great because he always expends the perfect amount of energy. All the cymbal work and tom fills keep this song super interesting.

MP playing along to Dream Theater songs. All is right with the world once again. Also shows why he is so good. He's just not keeping time with the music but he's adding a lot to it, bringing the drums up front and making them as much a part of the song as the guitar and vocals are.
Outstanding. I want to see him play Mangini's parts. I personally think that Mangini is better technically, but Portnoy brings a passion to the kit that gives the music a different kind of energy and feel.
I agree. I love Mangini, but he plays so calmly and makes very difficult things look super easy.
I prefer a more energetic delivery.
Honestly, it'll be really interesting to see how MP will play Mangini's parts.
@@bvq330 Well, MP is very musical. This playthrough was pretty different to the original recording. The essence of the original is all there, but the details are different, he was trying out new grooves and fills at several different parts. I imagine that's how he'll approach Mangini's tracks. Even if he can't play a song exactly as MM did, he'll have no trouble figuring out a variant that is functionally the same in terms of how it serves the song, and then he'll mix up the details to suit his style.

Mike Portnoy indeed cannot be separated from Dream Theater. But if I may be honest, Mike Mangini is still the best.
Boring Robot though. MP has 10x more feel and passion.
I love MP’s cymbal work. He is really the only drummer who has all of those cymbals and actually uses them.
His kit, shorts, shirt, beard, and even the lighting are all the colour Blue. Considering being surrounded by the calming effects of this colour; I doubt a real panic-attack would ever happen.
