- How I made my AR15 compliant per California regulations using AR Maglock Gen4. I also replaced my rear takedown pin with the Kingpin which simplified the act of breaking open the rifle in order to release and load a new magazine.
wow, this is a very nice explanation of using the AR MagLock Gen 4 with Kingpin.
can you do a video of how you clean your AR?
I used a Dremel on the mag lock. Just taper the edge down and it
Works perfectly with the bolt locked to the rear.
No need for a break in period. Just used a dremel.
Good idea. Well definitely do that
Man, THANK YOU for this video! Great explanation of how this works!
My a new a gun owner so my AR even when I open it in half the mag still won’t drop do I need to get something else besides the king pin
Cool 😎 video. Very informative. Makes me glad 😀 I don’t live in California or other states that require this mod. What a pain! 😩
You probably make videos on how to remove rusted bolts. Or how to winterize your equipment. Lol!
@@itruck96 It doesn’t bother me that you live in Commifornia or that Nancy Pelosi is your pin up girl. Haha 😂
@@2ndchance632 Your viewing habits say otherwise. Better get your snow tires ready.
Question: Why are you unable to crack the upper enough when the bolt is in the charged position? I was under the impression that this was one of the crucial points to using the Kingpin with the Mag Lock Gen 4, so as to clear a malfunction (like a double feed that holds the bolt back) just as you would on a free state rifle?
I second this exact question.
On some you can. On mine, the upper and lower are so tight that the kingpin does not open the action enough to push the maglock through to release mag. AR Maglock said that over time, the action will open up. So far it hasn’t.
The maker of the AR Maglock has a video where he says you can take some sandpaper and shave the anodizing off of the AR Maglock tongue that sticks between the upper and lower when the action of the rifle is open. Personally, I tried waiting for things to "settle in" as the AR Maglock creator says will happen in some of his other troubleshooting vids. I lost patience and very carefully ground down the AR Maglock tongue until the black anodizing was worn off the top of the narrow tongue portion. Now the AR Maglock Gen 4 functions perfectly in my mil-spec BCM upper/lower carbine - it will not release the mag when the upper and lower are together, but will when the bolt is locked back and Kingpin actuated. I would recommend just using some sandpaper.
Marshall M I saw that too. I was a little hesitant to permanently modify anything but it does make sense. If the tongue was just a hair thinner or the gap was a hair wider, the maglock would work perfectly. I’m going to wait a couple more sessions and if it doesn’t open up more then I’ll try sanding the tongue. Worse case scenario, I have to buy another maglock.
Did it finally break in on its own to allow bolt back mag release? Or did you have to make some adjustments?
How much clearance do you need in order for the ar mag lock to function last round bolt hold open. You said over time the gap will widen . What is the maximum gap you need. What is the measurements in .000” ?
I dont know the exact measurement but its miniscule. The maglock is very slim so its maybe 1 mm.
Thank you for this. Do you know how to install the kit on an sig spear LT?
Thanks, ordering now!! 🙂
Thank you for the detailed review! Do you think it's possible at all that the trigger action still functions (i.e. you can still fire) when the upper/lower is separated enough for the mag release to work?
You cannot fire when it is separated
@@nai1817 Thanks for replying! I know it's not supposed to fire but just wondering if it's possible at all, because when the gap is so tiny between the upper & lower, it's pretty much closed, so what's stopping it from firing? Curious to know your thoughts on this.
@@dave.h I saw another comment on a different AR maglock video where the guy claims he accidently shot a round when the upper and lower was not completely closed, and he said it ruined his upper. He didn't go into further detail, but that was the first I'd heard of it. The gap is pretty small, so I assume slamming the bcg forward will do it.
Great innovation. The fact that this needs to exist is ridiculous.
You cannot drop the BCG on a double feed to clear it! You might accidently fire off a live round in the chamber from a FTE double jam, or a double feed! You need to see if you can file down your ARmaglock to allow you to still function that mag release with the bolt held back! It is the safest way!
That’s one of those things that totally slip’s!! Props!!!
No but the king pin opens up and you can drop the mag which usually drops the double feed or the failed ejected shell then you can rack your gun.
One night I was shooting and didn’t close the upper all the way. The round cracked it. You have to make sure it’s closed every time after mag change before attempting to shoot.
Try to remember this new step when SHTF and you have only your AR15 to grab and fight back intruders.
Bad enough you only get 10 shots.
How long did it take for you to be able to use the kingpin with the bolt in the back position
Can a tension screw in the lower receiver be used to increase the opening between receivers?
tell me more
how do i know which gen to purchase for db15?
Thank you, very detailed.
Question please 👋👋 so how is rifle working now. Are u able to open upper with the bolt locked to the rear and how long it took to be able to do that. Is been bout an year since u posted this video. Do you think having another buffer tube will change this problem like a commercial buffer tube instead of a mil spec and also or maybe changing another bolt . Please let us know howbis it working now. I have same issues with brand new rifle so I need some feed back
I sanded down the maglock to make it thinner and now it works like a champ.
@@nai1817 yes but does the receiver opens up the same when is locked back as when the bolt is close? If it only open a little bit and you shave the maglock to get it to open easier ,does that becomes a problem on been compliance knowing that the receiver only opens up a tiny bit and not more as when the bolt is closed
Since installing have you been able to shoot enough to "loosen" it up for the action to break open enough with bolt back, or has the issue been resolved any other way?
I tried forcing the issue but putting a wedge between upper and lower with the bolt back. It helped a little but it’s still has a little more to go. I trained just releasing the bolt and then using kingpin.
@@nai1817 have you tried sanding the maglock fin? I’m having the same issue and wondering what to do about it. Have had 3 double feeds on my DD so the double feed issue isn’t theoretical anymore :P
@@FRSHSnip3r I plan on trying that next.
How did you guys get the actual mag lock to lock mine is loose and whe pin that came with it doesnt hold it in place all to well
@@rh2966 dimple the shaft or file a flat side first, then dimple with center punch followed by a small drill to make the dimple.
This is exactly what I was thinking with the Juggernaut I had bought. Using the Juggernaut rear takedown pin with the AR Maglock . And now, here it is. Major DUH factor for Maglock.
The Jug works with a gen 2 maglok ok but it is a pain in the ass if you move the pin incorrectly your loosening the castlenut and dis assembling your rifle to shove the detent back in its hole. The jug pin jams and the above is the only fix. The maglok kingpin is so much better and it also doesn't interfere with the safety levers.
@@williamhavens471 have you actually had this happen to you or just reading that info where the Jug pin jams poorly with the Ar Maglock system? My rifle came with the Jug kit installed and I bought the gen4 Ar maglock to allow me to reinstall a bolt catch again. I still have the Jug kingpin didn't order the AR model as so many folks say the combo works just fine, haven't heard anyone describe failures with the Jug pin yet I'm very interested in your experience or at least where you got that info so I can avoid all that mess lol. I've yet to see a proper side by side of the two kingpins but from videos they look almost identical.
@@Jordan-ql6tmyes your right they look identical.
My rifle also came with the jug pin , and the first time I field stripped to oil before shooting it for the first, the detent slipping out of the track and I had to take it to turners to fix.
I can’t imagine field stripping with ease in the future, what do I do?
Hand stop is featureless in CA, Vertical Grip no go ... Awesome Vid... Thx...
Hey there hopefully you can help me. I followed step by step i got everything installed but when it comes to pushing the pin to crack open the barrel it wont open. Hopefully you can help me.\
Watch AR Maglock videos
Is this just as good as the new hyperswitch, your opinion?
I just installed this system and I am having a strange issue. if the bolt is charged I cant release it with the catch. it is very hard to press the catch. but if I press the King Pin the bolt will release?? hope that makes sense.
That’s a strange issue. If that’s the case, then your bolt would lock during normal firing. Is it possible you charged the bolt with the upper separated already?
does the ditent pin and spring same size as the stock?
what manufacturer is the 2nd hand grip?
I have the same setup but I'm still able to release the magazine without separating the upper and lower. Anyone run into this issue?
I think that’s a feature.
So the only reason that people prefer this over the Juggernaut Hellfighter Kit is because it locks back the bolt after the final round? Trying to understand the preference and advantage.
It’s faster to hit the bolt catch and load the next round vs pulling the charging handle
Did you simply order this and put the new grip on yourself or do you need to register/ have dealer file something with the stage?
The version I ordered came with a maglock. You cannot buy an AR15 in CA unless it’s featureless or has a maglock. If you own one that is not compliant, I believe you need to register it.
What kind of mag is that ?
What exactly needs to be broken in in order for the gap to open wider? This is the only concern I have with the maglock, not being able to crack the action option while the bolt is in open position.
They go over this in a video by ar maglock entitled " ar maglock gen 2 and king pin troubleshooting". it was 2 years ago but is still relevant to the gen 4 because the gen 4 and 2 are essentially the same, the gen 4 is more adjustable if ur upper is not milspec. and they both used with the king pin in these scenarios
After normal use the rifle tolerances loosen up a little. You only need the rifle to open up a few millimeters in order to release the mag. You can also file the maglock so it will work with an even smaller gap.
Now 3 years later does it work like it should???
hehehehe funny guy here ^
You can tune the AR Maglock to work regardless of how many rounds you've got through it. You just need to file it slightly so it fits between the upper and lower.
Not really sure about this but I'm pretty sure you have to put it on "fire" before you can pew-pew away
Question, how do you separate upper from lower to clean the bcg?
Take out the kingpin, easy just push twist and pulls out
@@SupergiantgeckosLLC thanks dude. I’ve been looking all over UA-cam to find out how to remove that pin to clean my AR. You’re a lifesaver.
With a bit of practice it becomes very easy as described
What pistol grip is that?
Here's another vid that demonstrates some common functionality with the Kingpin and Mag Lock Gen 4

Same combo and cross mags here but on an ADM uic mod2 .223 Wylde and on my 300 BLk
Does this work for 300 blk? Their website says 223/556...
@@airframer120 yes cause you’re using the same lower. You can use any upper-.223,5.56,300blk even 50 cal Beowulf
Do you need both ar Maglock release and the king pin combo or can I get away with just the kingpin?
You can use the maglock without the king pin but it is 1000% easier and faster to separate your upper from lower with kingpin.
Thanks, I actually want to do the opposite and only use the kingpin... Will that still work?
@@razelllamanzares5368no it will not be compliant. You are eliminating the entire fixed mag part of the whole point behind the law.
Is this ny compliment?
You dont need to release the bolt when changing mags. The king pin will open the upper and lower ever so slightly when the bolt is to the rear and locked so you can still release the mag, even with bolt held open
mine does not open enough. i had to sand down the mag lock to make it work with bolt open.
@@nai1817 ah so you finally did end up sanding it down, I've been reading the comments trying to decide whether or not to go ahead and sand or wait.. But being a home defense item I'd rather not wait lol.
What part of the maglock did you have to sand down?
A second hand grip is only an “evil feature” on a pistol. A “forward pistol grip” is an “evil feature” on a rifle. PC 30515(a)(4)(B) the prohibition on a “second hand grip” only applies to semi auto centerfire pistols, not rifles.
What is the difference between a centerfire pistol and a rifle?
What trigger do you have one this?
I have the Larue MBT 2S straight bow
Is that an RJK mag coupler?
Yessir
Is that a magpul bad lever?
Yes
Does the ARmaglock gen 4 comes with a spring so that u can press on the mag release button so it'll spring in and out to release the mag..? I'm seeing pics on alot of websites with no spring but only on gen 2 and 3.... It should come with a spring right..? Lol 😄
I don’t remember if it came with a spring or if you use the existing spring. Either way, it works.
@@nai1817 Quickest reply I ever got! 👍 Hope I can use the spring that's on my lower, hope that works.
Are you required to drill and or loctite it to make the Maglock a permanent installation? That's the only thing I am not clear about to make it CA legit.
There are maglocks that require drilling but the one I used, AR maglock, is just a swap.
That’s what I did but I had to shave down my mag release lever to fit in between the crack and you gotta be carful not to shave to much off I hated that whole fixed mag lock I thought it was bullshit but after I did this I can keep my bolt catch I never removed junked the juggernaut bold replacement crap on the trash and just used the rear take down pin now my Mag drop like it ain’t no thing the upper pops in place on it’s own you don’t even notice it if you do this take your time measure the crack between the upper and lower the magpul mag release is to fat you gotta shave it down i and is to long so I had to shorten mine but I shortened it to much I had to use powder and super glue to extend it
Watch at 1.5x playback speed. You are welcome. Still, good video. Thanks for the content.
That’s how I watch all UA-cam vids. Thx
What ....so how does that gap open up!!??. So still u are unable to clear malfunction!!?? So i have too shoot a 1000 rounds? Wer do u find a 1000 rounds now a days??
The rifle does open with bolt closed, you just have to force it a little.
@@nai1817 yea but how do you open it to clear a malfunction with the bolt lock to the back??
@@Stick_jitsudad808 the upper and lower also separate with the bolt open. Not as much as with it closed but it does open up. On my BCM, it barely opened up but if you force it a little while pushing the mag release, it will work. Watch AR maglock videos. Some rifles aren’t as tight as BCM and have no problem releasing the mag with the bolt open.
How does yours spin around so easily? I need fuckin pliers to spin mine.
Gen 4 should have a set screw on the maglock to adjust
It does
ua-cam.com/video/SBiofNYR9vs/v-deo.html That's why Hogue Freedom Fighter is better than Maglock. You can file down the Hogue pin to get that clearance with the bolt back.
I went featureless just for this reason. I am not happy about this operation and have chosen the weird grip.
✌🏻
Ok bro just cuz ur a Reno may fan don't me u need to do that with ur fingers like him 🤦🏽♂️
Lol put it on safe to reload😂 #civilianproblems
Put the video at 1.25 speed and thank me later
Very misleading!
I fiddled with the kingpin, it’s a shit waste of money.
If you have several uppers to sight in, you are screwed.
The kingpin mate the upper and it fixed.
Just install the mag lock mag release and punch out the rear pin.
Or if you want to fiddle with disassembling the entire kingpin and reassembling.
To sight in a new upper.
HARD PASS ON THE KINGPIN.
Sorry, but the incessant "air quotes" & trendy "terminology" made me last only about a minute & a half.🙄
Carry on then

Maybe you should take time out of your day to make a free video for everyone without air quotes.
