- Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks and plays like the true next step for 2D Mario platformers that it aims to be. The Wonder effects change each stage in both surprising and delightful ways, and the Flower Kingdom makes for a vibrant and refreshing change of pace from the Mushroom Kingdom. With apologies to Yoshi's Island, Wonder feels like a proper 21st-century follow-up to Super Mario World. Reviewed on Nintendo Switch by Ryan McCaffrey.

Between this, the new movie, Princess Peach Showtime, Dark Moon HD, the remake of Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars and Thousand Year Door remake. Mario fans are eating like kings right now.

@@Champfosho Both Galaxy games and 3D Land/World were excellent eye candy... still are actually. The visual aesthetics of those games are incredible. Only the NSMB games kinda disappointed in that regard (though they did have some standout moments at times).

This looks to be the most varied Mario game since Galaxy 1. The amount of creativity on display here is simply astounding.
Odyssey is more varied than Galaxy.

Odyssey is varied amongst itself, but isn't that different compared to the others. It's basically Mario 64 with a hat capture mechanic.
Galaxy had space and all the weird power ups and gravity mechanics that make it stand out amongst Mario games. Sunshine also did this, but not to the degree of Galaxy
@@youtubesucks1821nah, odyssey is more varied. It expands a lot of the 64 concept and the worlds are weirdest in the franchise.

This is the strength of nintendo. They don't need high end graphics or sophisticated combat systems in their games. They built the switch to accomodate games like these, and it works well for their target audience.
but their graphics are always pretty and made well. especially considering hardware.

A lot of features we once experienced back in the SNES / Super Mario World era have returned (you can also check the wiki)
It makes me very happy knowing that Super Mario Bros. Wonder indeed can be considered a modern sequel to Super Mario World.

This game literally has the same vibe as SM World. I'm amazed at how they were able to capture that same feeling

It's like somebody knew that we grew up playing the original Mario and then we were going to do a ton of drugs before we got to our thirties, and now they have the game for us.
I’m glad to see a Mario game like this, the New Super Mario Bros. games were creatively bankrupt after the first instalment.

While Super Mario Odyssey was an homage to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Wonder was an homage to Super Mario World.
The part of him playing with his daughter was extremely wholesome

Are the badges intended to be something of an aid to make things easier, or do they just deepen the mechanics on offer?
They deepen the mechanics and you gotta rotate between badges to actually finish some stages
there's also expert badges that make the game harder
There are 6 Expert Badges that do the opposite - intentionally challange yourself.

yes you can. A mario game is an obstacle course platformer that remains the same. Run, jump, and grab coins. Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey, and New Super Mario series. You can compare them all.

Listening to the descriptions of new Super Mario Wonder enemies reminds me of that bit in the Rick and Morty Interdimensional Cable episode where they describe how “Plumbuses” are made.

One of the best games I've played in a very long time. Crash Bandicoot was always my favorite, but this one is right up there with it. The graphics and imagination behind it is incredible!

Reviewers need to stop treating 2D Mario as the side dish to 3D games. This game can be great and should be compared to other 2D Mario games and not something like Odyssey

Literally just beat this an hour before this review dropped. A 9 is absolutely appropriate. This game is so fun and somehow still finds ways to evolve on the traditional platforming.

The wonder affect is like something you shouldn't have smoke and you start seeing that you shouldn't see.
besides mario maker 2, i havent dove into a mainline 2D mario since Super Mario World/Super Mario All Stars on the SNES in the early 2000's however THIS looks very promising. Might give it a try!
Is it just me, or Nintendo games are what AAA games should be. Long, thorough development, tested properly.
We as gamers had the golden years in the 90’s and each new game was better and better, more features, more lifelike.

Imagine Mario Galaxy 3 features Elephant Mario, and they remix some Sunshine stages
Jeezzzz the one clip that showed repeatedly with elephant Mario in wonder mode missing that one purple piece above the pipes, gave me a spike of anxiety by the last showing 😅
I'm glad the challenge isn't too high. My kid loves Mario and is super hyped so having a game where even he can breeze through will be a nice change of pace with something harder sprinkled in there for me when he goes to bed.
