A very late comment as I have only just found this video, bit of personal historical information, I bought my Navitimer when I was 20, I am now 75. I only own this watch despite many attempts by family to get me a more budget watch for daily general wear. I have worn this watch every day apart when it was being serviced and some jobs I had during college holidays were not really appropriate for wearing this type of watch but it has never stopped working in its 55 year life. Slightly off topic but I has been looking repeatedly at a 2 dial Breitling stopwatch in a local jewellers, about £27, my entire Christmas bonus would cover this with a small amount left over, I entered the shop with the intention of investing my £27 but the Polish owner bought out a Navitimer from the back room, it had been originally purchased as a retirement gift for a member of staff at a local company but he found the dial a bit complicated for his eyesight so exchanged it for a watch that just told the time ! My lucky day I scraped together the required extra £10 to make my purchase, this watch is my only possession I would be devastated if I lost or damaged it, cameras, cars come and go but my Navitimer will be with me until I no longer need to know the time.

I'm an engineer so the slide rule puts the Navitimer ahead of the Speedmaster for me. I actually have used a slide rule because there are times when they are faster than a calculator. Plus I like the white on black, such a fantastic dial. Also, 1970 is a great year, just before quartz came along and mechanical watches became compromised as they tried to compete.

I agree, I love Omega and its probably my favourite brand, but the Speedmaster for me is so overrated and the navitimer is so much better.

The Navitimer was THE watch I drooled over by the time I saw it as a kid. It was almost impossible to wrap my head around of that clustered dial but hey that was where the fun came out of. Being a tool watch as it is brings a certain amonunt of ruggedness to it but that domed crystal and polished surfaces also made it an elegant piece to even stare let alone wear it...

The Navitimer Cosmonaute is my current long-term "grail" watch, and its mostly down to the videos you've done about them. I know I will have one, likely in 2020. So thank you, Tristano, for another inspiration on an addition to my watch collection.

Don't know how I missed this one since I love the navitimer. I have the Montbrilliant B01 limited edition and since this video I was fortunate to get the Ref 806 re edition. I love getting to slowly go through this video and comparing mine to your vintage piece and seeing the similarities. I want to add one more the Cosmonaute and I have to thank you for telling me what to look for in a late 90's edition. By the way anyone that stumbles on this older vid and my comment the Ref 806 is still out there and are around 8 to 9K not near 12k some NOS.

When I first saw your blue dial navitimer, I was like "Neh, too much. It's not for me". But as I keep watching your vids plus especially this one, I think my perspective for the navitimer has changed. Yes sir, this navitimer looks absolutely exquisite.

I bought a Breitling back in 2000. It was beautiful. Lost 20 minutes a week. I traded it for w wolfe watch winder with 3 slots. It, too, was crap. So, no more Breitlings and no more Wolfe’s. I have an Omega Rail master from the same period. It is the most accurate watch I have ever owned, followed closely by a Ball and a Bell & Ross. But, at the end of the day, my Seiko Sarb 035 is a killer. It’s not the brand, it is the watch. Love your content, TVG. Thank you.

    • @theurbangentry

I am genuinely sad to hear that.
To be fair, I had the complete opposite experience with these two brands you mention, but you know that. Such a shame you didn't too. But at least the good old trusty SARB and Ball saved the day, good for you.
      Thank you for sharing Richard,

My Vostok amphibia arrived the day after your video about your new warroom. I can't remember the reference number, but the sticker on the box said 650541, cushion case, white dial, anchor at the six o clock , green Arabic numerals. Replaced the NATO style strap it came with for a rubber stamp only for practical reasons. I work at a McDonald's, so chromed brass case, and rubber stamp are easier to clean, considering I do maintenance, things like grease, garbage, what have you easier to hose down if it gets filthy. As well LOVE the new (old) Brietling excellent choice.

The Navitimer has always been one of my grail watches since I was a boy. The complexity of the dial has always fascinated me (even if I will never use it as it was intended!). When the day finally came for me to buy one, Breitling told me about their world tour limited edition and I knew I had to move my buying plans slightly forward to accommodate one of the best buying experiences of my life.
The Breitling DC3 Navitimer is the best watch in my collection not just because of the extra special treat that Breitling threw my way, but mainly because it remains one of the most enigmatic and magical watches in my mind, to this day. It’s back story and continued journey epitomises so much about watch and brand development and videos like this one from TGV just help to highlight what’s so special about this watch and the brand behind it.
I’ve got quite a few videos on my channel showcasing my Navitimer and my buying experience if anyone is interested but in the meantime, a big shoutout to all the Navitimer fans out there! We really do wear them be of the finest watches available! Paul

Love the genuine nervousness / excitement in your voice when unboxing mate. Think with vintage they can give the most enjoyment, but as you correctly mention there is more danger involved in buying them. Love the reverse panda 🐼 dials. Lovely watch. Enjoy. Would love to see you for your next affordable review to do the Orient Star Retrograde. It's a little bit different to the norm but it's (along with my G-Shock squares) my go to watch, so would love your take on it. Enjoy your weekend sir!

Damn you Tristano!!! Just when I think I'm over selling my frist great watch, an Old Navitimer II, cream dial, gold bezel, you release another Navi vid! I wore that watch as a young professional traveling all over the US and Europe in the 90s calculating exchange rates at a glance (pre smartphone) and really enjoying an amazing time piece that most ppl didn't even notice. That's the one that got away. 6 months ago got a Sinn 756 Diapal and haven't touched anything in my collection since including my Chronomat. Time to unload a dozen or so watches... or should I? Thanks for posting and damn you :D

Another option, in addition to the Sinn "Navitimer" is the Olech and Wajs "Aviation" series. Also a vintage Navitimer looking watch. Like the Sinn, they really can't be considered an homage. Not sure if they're still in production, but O & W, along with Sinn bought the rights, dials, tooling, etc., to the old Navitimers when Breitling was going through bankruptcy. www.breitling-museum.com/OLLECH-WAJS-SINN-NAVITIMER.html

I think that your black Navitimer would look amazing on a black Di Modell Pilot strap. It's a similar design to the Rios 1931 in your video, but with more padding to the centre section. I have one on my Sinn 857 and could put it on my 903, but as it's the blue version, I don't think it would suit.

Hello TGV, first of all big fan . Now that you’re collaborating with Watchbox and you have access to more expensive watches, maybe you could make a patek phillipe nautilus special in which you can explain , show why a retail £ 23.344 is being sold second hand for £59500 .Plus every time you see a celebrity/football player(our football)/singer/movie star/comedian.Love to hear your thoughts.Kind regards, keep up the good work

The 1959 reedition of 806 retails 7700 euros, not 12 grands as states in the video at minute 19.25. That's less than about twice what you paid for a vintage piece (which year?, hands and hour markers look very white). As you mentioned, they made a great job, almost a carbon copy of the original, with a new hand-wound in-house movement COSC certified, + lume, + a bit of waterproofness. All in all it seems a fair price to go for.

I used to think that, too. Breitling was the epiphany of a watch a Turk would want to wear - when even Rolex is not enough. But in recent time, I’ve changed my mind. Breitlings are just pretty good watches and they are affordable and available on the second hand market (nobody buys new). And the Navitimer especially is just a very useful watch - if you learn to operate it. Having that said, if you want a Navitimer, always consider the original: The Sinn 903. It is cheaper and more rugged.

@@dannyb8118 Breitling went into bankruptcy end of the seventies. Sinn bought the remaining parts and design rights to the Navitimer. A vintage Sinn 903 from that area actually has a Breitling signed crown and movement and is very collectible. Sinn continued the Navitimer in it original form, design and size. Breitling was later refounded and reintroduced a watch by the name "Navitimer" with an updated design (much bigger, less rugged). Today's (2021) Breitling Navitimer a very nice again, though. Nevertheless, Sinn in the company continuing the original branch of watches.

Yes well said, you know your watches... I was only challenging your statement of calling the Sinn "the original", which is not the case right? Bankruptcy and licensing aside the first watch bearing the name "navitimer" was 1952... 9 years before Sinn was founded.

In "Thunderball", the funny thing about the navitimer worn by the traitorous pilot who dies (gets killed) in the plane he purposely crashed in the ocean is that it changes to what seems like 2 other watches during course of his underwater aeronautical tomb. It looks like an all gold watch head at one point, and then a dive watch with a steel bracelet, then back to the navitimer the last time he is seen/visited.

    Hi TGV!
I’ve set a search filter for a 1966 Navitimer with a Venus 178 a little while ago. There are some available but the most have questionable dials and hands that are definitely not originally. Maybe a Navitimer from 1966 could help me to kill two birds with one stone: A birth year watch and my first and probably only chronograph in the collection... 🤔
    Best regards,
    Claus

I still argue that the Navitimer is the most iconic chrono. Before I got into watches I had never heard of a Speedmaster or Daytona. I knew exactly what a Navitimer was though. Obviously this is only one person’s experience.

  • @rene_falk

    Hi TGV,
I like the same things you do on the Navitimers, but you left out the biggest criticism. Namely the ridiculously low water resistance. With the Navitimer you have to be careful when washing your hands. Of course, this watch is not a dive watch, but a tool watch should have a reasonable degree of ruggedness. This watch is a pilot's watch, and sudden pressure changes are part of the job.
That's why I have not bought any Navitimer yet.
    Have fun
    René

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  5 років тому

A very good point, one I have discussed many years ago in earlier videos.
Unfortunately, due to the way the bezel is integrated into the glass it is very difficult to make water resistant, unless you have it like the one on my Chronospace (check the summer video) with the slide rule separate and on the outside. Having said that, Sinn have managed to make it 100m some how on their far more rugged 903, so perhaps that is you best option, it costs much less too!
I would like to add, don't be put off, I understand the trepidation, but this is not a diving watch and unless you are doing a Scot Carpenter landing in the ocean, I would not worry about it. My regret is not buying a NAvitimer sooner than 3 years ago.
      Thank you Rene, great comment.
      Best regards,
      TGV
