I worked for a mortgage broker whilst studying for my law degree: they gave us little bonuses every month if we hit our targets; I didn't spend a single penny of it as it all went into the watch fund which ended with my beloved Navitimer purchase. That was 16 years ago and the Navi was something I'd coveted since the early 90s. Great video to an even greater watch!

Ahh the Breitling Navitimer! You know I actually never cared about watches until one day when I was at an airport and I saw this ad with Travolta and the Navitimer. I was starstruck, how is it possible a watch can look THAT good!? I didn't even knew what it cost but what I did knew was that I must have it. It took me some years of saving but oh boy oh boy was it worth it. I had it for two years now and to this very day I still smile whenever I look down at it.

I never thought twice about getting it as my very first luxury timepiece when I grew up to afford one. While my Speedy and SeaD are “acquired” tastes the Navitimer was 100% pure love at first sight. I just got my grubby mitts on a never before used 1992 Flightmaster 7T34-6A00, which i know is deep into Navitimer territory, hence I'm browsing through your review history. It's kind of hard to read the tiny numbers since there's SO MUCH crammed into there, but I'm starting to get comfy doing simple maths on it. Looking around for more navitimer tutorials (they're easier to find than flighty tutorials for sure), and here we are. Man, the flightmaster, what a piece of ART this watch is when you study it under good light! Breitlings are roughly 20 times above my budget, so I'm mega happy I landed this old flighty in pristine condition. The flighty is like a navtimer x5, which is both good (even cooler) and bad (less legible)

I’ve got such a soft spot for the Navitiner. It’s easy to forget that Breitling were such innovators and were the first to settle on the layout of the chronograph which has become the accepted standard.
I’m a life long rock n roller and always associated the Navitimer with Slash who is the guitarist for Guns n Roses. It was only later when I got into watches that I looked again and realised it wasn’t a Navitimer at all but a Chronomat!
Another fantastic show, as always 👏👏👏👏

Crushes come and go, but the Navitimer rmeains my holy grail, its been on my mind since I first saw it in a magazine ad some 16 years ago. I'll get one one day.
As for what I dislike about it, 3 things. 1. The date complication, I'll never understand manufacturers' fixation on putting dates on Chronographs ... especially 4 o'clock windows.
    2. The abysmal 30 meters of water resistance. IMHO a 100 meters should be the standard nowadays.
    3. I'm not particularly fond of the current bracelet design.
Excellent work like always, TVG. The NATO you designed suits it perfectly.

FIRST OFF !!! GET IN ENGLAND!!!! Now who are you gonna be supporting in the final???;) I remember talking to a guy (think it was 2006??) he had just bought a Breitling . Not a Navi but a god awful big mother. He liked the look of it and the price it was! For a bit it was Breitling / Omega then Rolex . The over sized watches are not hot anymore and I think that’s a big reason why the Navi isn’t held as the timeless icon the Sub or Speedy is. Also It’s only after watching your show I kind of know what the original should look like??? Think the design has been muddied over the decades tbh. Loved the history T and I like Breitling a little bit more now!

Refinement and sophisticated looks is what I tend to gravitate towards when it comes to chronographs....the Breitling tends to be a bit flashier and heavier handed than the Speedmaster or even the Daytona....which is not to stay it's a bad piece, it's just a bit more in your face than the Rolex and Omegas usually tend to be. Second and so on: My Grail mechanical chronograph is... Yes, the Navitimer!....
I love two his versions: All black version of Cosmonaut and all black 12 h version with annual calendar and moon phases.
I don't have this model in my collection at the moment, but I have one his version from Casio and I like it so much.
I think this chronograph is underrated in shadow of Daytona and Speedmaster. Possible reason, in my opinion, is his water resistance of only, only 30 meters or 3 atmospheres.
But for me, in all other functions, he is the best chronograph!

The civilian version, in the Citizen at0361-06e makes the slide rule less complicated by enabling it to determine a second time zone apart from your local city by reading off the places from where you currently are. What the Bretling Navitiimer was, it wasn’t just the first chronograph and navigational computational aid, it was the first GMT and world time watch. It literally changed the way people saw time and distance and without it, that watch and the Casio World Time digital watch would have been inconceivable. An invention that has been felt everywhere in every day life.

I bought my Navitimer over a decade ago--it is lovely, rugged, and absurdly accurate. The iconic circular slide-rule on the watch's face is just a Felsenthal E-6B (mechanical) computer used by pilots to calculate time/distance and time/fuel consumption problems, just to name a few. My particular watch also has the Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion scale on the back. Everybody used the E-6B when I learned to fly...uh, fifty years ago. However, the computer on the watch is still handy for vacation driving, or for those long distance motorcycle trips. Waterproof? Making that huge rotating bezel waterproof must have just about killed the engineers at Breitling. Cut them some slack, eh? That outer O-Ring has to be an inch and a half in diameter. Hannah Reitsch, the famous German test pilot, wore an earlier Breitling, as did the Red Baron in WW-1. Check out Hannah flying the deadly Komet 163 rocket plane in about 1941--see UA-cam. Anyway these are excellent watches; I highly recommend them. [Hey TGV, mille grazie!] Take care, all. --Old Guy.

The manual flight computer, or logarithmic scale on the bezel, has been an indispensable tool for pilots. For those who know how to use it. This can be said to this day. It is a circular slide rule. I'm afraid electronic flight computers are taking over these days for younger pilots, but I've found this feature one of the best if you want an actually functional aviation watch. For the ultimate tool aviation watch that is just amazingly functional, it is hard to beat the Citizen analog/digital aviation watches with a manual flight computer on the bezel, with conversion tick marks (nautical-statue-km, liters-US gal-Imp gal, etc). So customizable. You can specify which time zones are displayed on your manual cycling operation on the digital display. Totally transcends GMT or world times zone watches plus adds so much more.
Here's the thing though. It's busy and you can't get away from the nerdy look to it. Very functional, but the style can't be changed much. So I end up finding myself using more stylistic watches that has some function, makes a statement, and connects with me somehow. In this case a pilot can use the onboard computers, simple math with a cell phone calculator, or use pen and paper. All perhaps a bit slower than using the manual flight computer watch bezel, but the job gets done.

Bought my blue dial, blue strap, Navitimer A23322 about five years ago, and although it's increased its value by nearly 40%, I doubt I will ever sell it. I still think it's one of the most beautiful and interesting watches ever made.
I also bought a Datejust 16013 at about the same time (that's increased by about 60%). I keep it on a black leather strap and use it mainly for slightly dressier occasions.
Currently looking for either a PAM00176 or a PAM00914 on a brown leather strap. That'd complete my perfect 3 piece collection (not counting the beaters).

The Navi is a watch that I love to admire from afar, I've learned. I love seeing it in videos like this, seeing photos of it, etc. But I've had one on my wrist before and in person when I look down at it it's just too busy for me. I think many others are in the same boat.

I've still got my fingers crossed for a SPB143 review - I would have thought a vintage inspired Seiko diver in 40.5mm would be just your cup of tea, I know it's been reviewed many times but no one does it like you!

I love my Navitimer Cosmonaute! My model has a display back, so it's good education for my kids, plus I get to use the line "I think it's X o'clock now, but I'm not sure". :)

Nice vid, TGV. I never knew Miles Davis wore a Navi! I always think of Seinfeld when I see this watch.

The navitimer is one of my grail pieces and next on the buy list. My favorite one is the 38mm Montbrilliant A41330. Super underrated IMO.

I love the Navitimer, I got a 1966 Navitimer 806 and a 2014 Navitimer World. It is weird that they are so underrated, I think the old ones will go up in value within some time!

Great video -- I always have looked the other way when the Navitimer came up even though I knew a little of it's iconic status. I would add that even though I don't think he wore a Navitimer, Jerry Seinfeld notably wore Breitlings on his show and still can be seen wearing them occasionally today.

Before Sinn, Breitling Navitimer also was distributed in France under Lip watch company, and also in the US under Gruen watch company. The pieces have those brand names on the dial under the Breitling logo and are very rare finds these days!
