History Of The Greatest Pilot Watch & Breitling Navitimer 1 38mm Review - Pure Class or Disaster?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лис 2018
- Today I have the pleasure of reviewing the newest addition to the incredibly important and historic Navitimer line of watches by Breitling.
The Navitimer is without a doubt my favourite chronograph, so when I heard there was a new, smaller, 38mm version (Ref. A17325211C1A1) released at 2018 Baselworld I was super excited. However, this new version is not a chronograph and it has also done away with some other much loved features following a major shift in the brand’s priorities under new leadership.
To further understand these recent developments, I explore the history of the Navitimer and trace its roots from adventures in space to James Bond movies, bankruptcy, and some fascinating innovations along the way.
Will this be the biggest disaster for the Navitimer or a badly needed, refreshing start? Join me to find out!

That is the best looking Breitling I've seen.a lot of Navitimers can look too busy with chronograph, but this is so easy on the eye.great vid and history lesson.good work fella.
I must say, you are one of my favorite and IMO, the best narrator when it comes to horology. I find it simply fascinating to just listen to the history of each watch you cover. I never was much of a Breitling fan but I do respect it's accomplishments and place in history. Well done.
One of your best yet TGV. I am a Breitling tragic and tried that exact model on only the other day. Your comment at the end “most loveable disappointment” was exactly how I felt! Its a beautiful piece yet something is missing and the Ozzie dollar is brutal! Cheers.
Your history summary was excellent. Better than most documentaries I have seen! Thanks TGV
At 6:55 TGV meant Boeing 707 not 747
Definitely better done and more interesting than the nothingness and drivel the brands put out directly.
Shall we petition Breitling to release a 38mm chronograph Navitimer?
YES!!!!!
I kinda want a gold one LOL ;-)
How about you Luca?
Best regards,
TGV
@@thegorn The Zenith El Primero Original 1969 is 38mm, and if Zenith can make a chronograph movement in that size, Breitling can make it too. And my eyes are pretty good. ;)
They already did some 15 years ago, maybe they can make a reissue.
@@thegorn All three movements (B01, 7750 and El Primero) have a 30 mm diameter. So it surely can fit into a 38 mm case. (Breitling Chrono Cockpit e. g. is really around 38 mm - 100 m WR -, Sinn 256 Ta (also 7750) had a 38.5 mm case - 200 m WR, older Omega Speedmasters with 7751 had a 37 mm case - 30 m WR. So no technical problem here.
The Gorn there is a Montbrillant b01 at 40mm...
Been looking at Navi reviews for the past week and now you upload this... must be a sign! :)
Remarkably exceptional video TGV...You continue to out do yourself! I own the Sinn Navitimer & I've owned the Breitling Navitimer and I love both and find them equally charming. Thanks for you wonderful work for the watch community. Kind Regards from Canada.
Extremely well-done insightfull review!! Been absent from the channel for a while now (sometimes I find the videos to be a bit long) but I very much enjoyed being back!! Thank you :)
It’s not about the watches with your videos nearly as much as it is what I learn about the watches. Thank you so much!
Great video TGV! I recently aquired a 38mm watch, and the size is charismatic. Makes me happy to have the wrists to wear it. 😊
I appreciate the historical backstory you've put into this review as much (if not more) than the actual watch itself... terrific as usual, Tristano! I personally own a Navitimer 01, and it's one of my absolute favorites in my collection. While the Navitimer 1 38mm is elegant in it's simplicity, it just doesn't capture my attention the way more traditional Navitimers do. 30m water resistance is quite a unpleasant surprise in comparison to it's biggest competitors, and one I hope is addressed soon.
This video is masterfully and so artistically created; it is a joy to watch. The Breitling itself is almost an afterthought. But I can say after watching this video, I have been informed quite well regarding the brand and the history of this Navitimer tradition. Excellent in all aspects.
Thank you so much RKL :D
Best regards,
TGV
One of your best....and one of the best vids I've seen on UA-cam...a wonderful history lesson.....
I watch many watch channels and wonder why some of these guys give you a hard time....your production is miles infront of any of them ...and you are building an amazing collection.......👍👍👍
Thank you so much Robin :D
That truly makes my day to hear that.
O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
The watch is pure class....and so is this video. Thanks for the history of one of my grails. This is the supreme watch channel on youtube, no doubt about it. Thank you TGV.
TGV, great content and very informative. Thanks for taking the time to put it together!
Always an absolute pleasure.
Thank you for kind words, you are a true gent for saying so.
Best regards,
TGV
Another brilliant discussion - saw one in person today and am quite tempted !!! Fits so well into the small wrist - wear to work and such role! May have to go back and pick it up!
Thanks for review TGV, I watched this morning but couldn't comment or else I would have been late for work and I think they are a little tired of my "It wasn't me it was TGV!!!" excuses! 😁. It's a stunning looking watch, and given I'm not a chronograph fan, I don't miss that. I also really do think people concentrate far too much on specs, rather than how the watch feels, so the 30m water resistance really doesn't bother me. However given the price, I do agree perhaps some more effort perhaps could have gone into that aspect, maybe. Stunning watch, great video once again sir, thank you 👌
What a fantastic episode! So well researched with the info and images.
You romanticise Breitling to such a level that I feel the need to sell everything and get one! So much information, such a well researched review of the company. Well done as always, brilliant stuff! P.s, where's Hugo and his review..?
I could care less if you own it but for places to lend you some of these quality timepieces means you're going places! Kudos to you friend. I hope they do it again in the future
I don’t like the fact they’ve lost their wings
Agreed, pilots love seeing their wings on there!
Looks as they lost their balls
Can't agree more. That's one of the reasons I prefer older models.... Now we see a trend of coming back to original traditions after failed experiments. Hopefully we might also get the wings back.
Another exquisite intro! I prefer an older previously enjoyed Navitimer like yours. It’s one of my 4 grail watches. Looks great with the leather strap, and NATO as well. Thank you for another wonderful video!
I love the way you add the heritage to your videos on the watches you review. I really enjoy watching the evolution of classic timepieces. What I do notice is that the classic and desirable designs have small subtle changes from their predecessors. How can you build on perfection? Keep it simple and minimal.
The history lesson regarding the Navitimer was phenomenal! Thanks so much! I like the new one presented as well, but then I am an equal opportunity watch lover!! Thanks!!
Thank you so much sir!
Always appreciated:D
Best regards,
TGV
Excellent review, as always. I love your channel. Thank you.
Ah! This is the new Breitling review you were telling me to wait for.
You made really good points about the new model. Thanks for the detailed review!
Thank you Richard, very much appreciated.
Sorry for the delay, I had been putting it off for weeks because of my busy schedule, glad to get there in the end.
Best regards,
TGV
Such a great and highly interesting history with wonderful illustration! Excellent work TGV! :)
I tried one of the pieces of the new Premier line on, a non chronograph model with blue dial, in size 39mm, lovely watch, which is available among four different colours altogether.
The ‘Premier’ is a dress watch line actually, includes chronograph models, has been released just recently.
I wish you to meet them and review some of them sometime.
First class review! Thanks for that.
Regards, Robert
I never knew that the Navitimer had such a beautiful history. To be honest, I was not a big Navitimer fan before I saw this video. I have always respected it for what is, but it did not really do anything for me. Now knowing the history of the Navitimer, makes me really interested in the watch. I love that the design did not change all that much since the early Navitimers. Imagine a nice vintage Navitimer with a patinated dial, handset and lume on a gorgeous vintage strap...
Hello TGV, your presentation on the history of Brietling was great. It was good to see this particular watch..
Thank you Bob :D
Best regards,
TGV
I think you nailed the review and history lesson. I always like that. This one reminds me of grandma's old pearl jewelry. Thanks!
Thank you sir :D
Best regards,
TGV
Wonderful video, done with a lot of affection. Your Navi is an absolute keeper btw.
Tristano mio! Great video as always! Fully agree with your assessment of this watch......Would love to see a duel with the El Primero......
Superb review covering my first mechanical and most favoured watch 👍🏼. I am enjoying the trend of brands such as Breitling to embrace more reasonably sized cases, definitely opening up the range to more varied wearers and wearing occasions. On a similar theme of Pilot’s watches I recently purchased an IWC Mark XVIII Laureus edition, which I feel hits a similar sweet spot, maybe not quite as small but a significant reduction in size from the big Pilot and their mid range. It would be worth comparing the two.
Thanks TGV for the indepth Breitling history especially the Navitimer. The old skool Navi charm will works it way into me,,, the current 2018 new release look pretty interesting too, less busy clean look. What an awesome watch maker with a super ionic watch which everybody know.
Beautiful, simple, streamlined watch & now it’s more my size! At home in a flightsuit or suit. I love it.
Really cant get behind the new Navi. I cant explain why but it dosent have that look I want when i think "navitimer"
As always though, wonderful editing and wonderful review. Looking foward to many many more.
This piece is on deck...Hope you're well, TGV. Thank you, as always 😊
Thank you my friend.
I am very well, I hope you are too.
Best regards,
TGV
Really cool, thanks for the history on these , I didn’t know much about the brand
An absolutely fantastic video as always TGV. I've said it before, if I was stuck on an island with no food, water, or transportation and a genie gave me 3 wishes, I'd wish for a Navitimer and tell him to keep the other 2 wishes.
LOL, I like your style Mike, pure class my friend, pure class!
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
Thank a lot TGV for this really nice and honest review as the master of the Breitling watches lol !! With all you love for this blue chronographe Navitimer, that really looks awesome by the way, I could never really understand that buzz behind de the Navitimer thing. Thanks to the great historical presentation. I must say that this is the first time that I am really interested by Breitling, more than just thinking about how it looks really good, you know. And this is mostly because of the 38mm size, the lighter blue dial and the simple clean design. This is a good thing, but at this price, forget me. At this price range you can get a Sinn Chronograph, and many other options.
I love the vintage Breitlings! They are just "pure class!" Fascinating video. This really opened my eyes to the history of the brand I love so much. Thanks for the video!
Thank you Shane, I could not agree more about their vintage watches. If I was stinking rich I would buy a gold 806 in a heartbeat!
Best regards,
TGV
I like the size, but I don’t quite like the watch. Almost there, Breitling! Great review as always.
I never thought I’d own a watch as beautiful and my Omega PO, but my Breitling Navitimer (Black with silver sub dials and SS bracelet) proved me wrong :-) Great review too.
„The most lovable disappointment ever invountered“ - best description ever! 👍🏼🙂
Lovely video, I love the design of the new Navi but I am a sucker for the chrono. Also was that the Romeo and Juliet Overture by Tchaikovsky playing in the background, that is easily one of my favorite classical pieces ever written.
Another superb documentary. World class and very interesting👍
Fantastic intro !
Love your channel, TGV 👍🏻
Thank you GDR!
Best regards,
TGV
Wholeheartedly agree with almost everything that you said. The one thing that i can live without is the chronograph. As a speedy fan, i have always loved the navitimer but found no need for another complicated chronograph. This one takes the cake. Unfortunately the price is to steep for now. Maybe if there are enough used examples of this watch in the future, it will be more attainable. Thanks for great review, cheers!
Loved the video!!! Thanks TGV
Your video introductions are always stunning.
I've never owned a Breitling but held a few and they we're all very well made.Great video!
Nice to see the smaller size with having a smaller wrist myself but too plan looking, your Navitimer looks a lot better TGV. I can see Women liking the newer design more as they seem to like a less cluttered dial.
Great video Tristano, thanks for the info! One of my all time favorites
Thank you Kyle, very glad to hear.
Have you ever considered doing a pilot watch just out of interest?
Best regards,
TGV
Yes sir :) I have designed one but not got around to making it! Regards Kyle
Great review with a very thrilling watch lesson! Thanks again TGV! I quite like the look of the new Navitimer 1 but as many said before: The price and only 3 atm water resistance make this watch a joke. Sorry Georges.
Great vid Tristano! Love 38mm size. One minor clarification, the 747 was introduced in 1969 in Everett, near Seattle, WA.
An excellent historical perspective of the Breitling Navitimer, TGV. Love the 38mm size, but not the price.
Thank you my friend :D
Best regards,
TGV
Another great video my friend! That's a really nice looking watch. Not a classic Navitimer of course, but it's certainly handsome. The size is spot on. I think Mr Kern is on the right track, the new Premier references are stunning as well. Would love to get a Navitimer at some point, but I already own a SuperOcean and a Transocean 1461. Hard to justify a third Breitling ;) Oh well, someday. Cheers, JP
30mm water resistance is unacceptable for a watch like this. That is a major weakness to me. It is easy for any watch company to a watch with 50 or a 100m resistance, even on a dress watch. If Casio can do it, I have no doubts Breitling could do it. Nevertheless, it is beautiful watch.
I totally agree, this with 100m WR, a GMT or Day complication and I would not be sending it back a 3k poorer! LOL
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry It's difficult to go over 30m WR because of the rotating bezel. It's not an external bezel, it's difficult to get over 30m WR because of the bezel's seal. I think the only way to fix it is to make it like Sinn do on the 903.
But yes, 30m WR is very bad, and I think 2k€ would be a nicer price.
Thank TGV for the video,
Best regards,
@@mandalorefrancais Sorry for probably quite noobish question, but what's the use of a rotating scale/besel when no chronograph?
Better than Scott Carpenter's Cosmonaute which didn't survive recovery after "Aurora 7" capsule splashdown as it got severely water damaged and was discarded!
@@bumpyroad3251 In this watch, the bezel is a calculator (slide rule) based on logarithm, so you can use it with out chronograph ;)
Great content. Small correction: You forgot to mention the late 806, 806-36 and 806 E models with Valjoux 7736 movements (nodate).
I'm a pilot and counted the days until I could buy a Navitimer. One day I walked into my local jeweler and found a vintage blue-faced Navitimer on a leather band and a vintage two-tone Chronomat Evolution 44 on a two-tone bracelet in their display, for about the same price. As much as I wanted to love the Navitimer, I knew I would never use the flight calculator functionality (the scales are too small for my old eyes, and I use digital flight calculators these days), and the face just looked too busy compared to the Chronomat. I was also turned off by the (lack of) water resistance on the Navitimer. I walked out with the Chronomat on my wrist, freshly serviced and polished. It's built like a tank, keeps perfect time, and looks appropriate in a suit or a t-shirt. The Chronomat has become my EDC do-all watch that never leaves my wrist. It's so seductive that I use it as my meditation device. When my nephew graduates from the Air Force Academy, my gift to him will be a Breitling Chronomat. As always, this is a superb review.
6 & 1/4 inch wrist utter perfection! I was worried with my thin wrist now it's all good after you said it
I am proud to wear my beloved Poljot 3133 “Columbus“ which has some Breitling DNA in it due to the fact that Breitling sold much of itself to Poljot.
This watch raises my heart beat to this day from the first moment I saw it. No other watch managed to do this actually.
Great video. I think the Breitling in a 38mm size was a great move for Breitling, the dial looks amazing with the white and the blue like on other Navitimers also the straps and bracelets are very cool, but I think they should have added a GMT function as well as a 5atm water resistance (its a lot easier to do on a non chronograph, but even on the chronographs they should do it). My major point of criticism is the price I think it should be at 2500$ but its almost double, for that kind od money you could easily buy a Breitling twin sixtie wich is also suitable for smaller wristed and is even cooler than the already amazing normal Navitimer.:)
What a great modern design of a classic! I definitely agree that a day and/or GMT complication would be a fantastic addition!
Great video, thanks a lot! I love that watch... Tried on the cream dial version with rose gold and it looked fantastic on the wrist. As expensive as a used 31mm Rolex datejust, and with a Sellita movement....but I really want one.
You sir are very very good.. I love how informative you are.
Thank you so much :D
Best regards,
TGV
Really great looking watch, but too expensive for only 30m wr. If they can't be bothered to add basic wr engineering to an acceptable level there are hundreds of nice alternatives. Great video as always
I'm not a huge fan of busy watch dials, but these are indeed some gorgeous watches! I own a Fossil chronograph-- even though it can't compete with Breitling whatsoever-- but I never use the chronograph feature. I like it for looks mainly and feel like it makes the dial look more sophisticated.
Top shelf as always, TGV. I'd love to see you do a video on Breitling's airplanes, which includes the beautiful, Lockheed Constellation. Great review
OMG, that would be amazing.
Dying to buy the model on eBay, so ruddy expensive :-(
Oh well, maybe one day I will try to visit them in Switzerland, they have a runway near the factory I think.
I drove past it last time I was there.
Thank you my friend.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry You're right about the models. To get a good one (like the Revell), it's at least $150. A TGV tour of the actual one would be Mega!
Hi TGV!
Great video about the history of the Navitimer. If I ever going to buy a Navitimer I would go for the new three hander due to the fact I’m not a huge chronograph fan.
Best regards,
Claus
Thank you Claus,
Wonderful to hear from you, I could seriously see you with one of these in your outstanding EDC pics, perhaps the black one.
Best regards,
TGV
Can’t wait till you’re celebrating your 40th birthday and 2 million subscribers with A GOLD NAVITIMER 👍🏻 onwards and upwards!
That would be AMAZING!!!! You know what, I say this now, I will make it so!
I only hope you comment on the unboxing and I can say thank you KLC for the support ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing navi I've seen. I had always been turned off by navis because they were gigantic with dials that were so overly complex, I could never focus on any particular detail -- to me, they were too distracting and overwhelming. The size also made them feel a little too gaudy for me However, this new model captures the essence of a navi without the the dizzying complexity of the dial. I feel like I am able to actually see the navi for the first time -- the ability to focus on sthetruly unique and timeless design in a size that is functionally wearable. I have to say, I am smitten. I think it's a home run -- beautiful, simplistic elegant... I have now been converted into a fan!
Love my Cosmonaute D22322 with gold bezel and gold subdials wih the Air Racer hard bracelet. True 24 hour time watch. Serious pilot's watch. Super lightweight, manual wind. And fabulous conversation piece with the hour hand only making the 1 rotation in 24 hours...lots of people get weirded out trying to figure out the hour.
Great video - TGV at his very best, with so much content and insight. They’ve lost the plot with this watch though.
I’ve probably watched this video a dozen times and learn something new each time. Was never a fan on Breitling. Always a Rolex and Omega guy. I now own three Breitling and love them all. Bought the Trans Ocean because of UG review along with a Navi 8 (now Avi 8). Waiting for my Navi ref a17326211b1p1 reverse panda on black alligator to arrive today. Can’t wait 👍 ✌️
After I watched your videos I fell in love with Mechanical watches. I recently bought Oris classic date and I love the watch. I am now 16 years old. Thank you for inspiring me. I plan to collect watches.
Thank you my friend for sharing that, it greatly inspires me to hear.
Enjoy this wonderful new journey
Best regards
TGV
Omg this 38mm is so gorgeous
Really enjoyed the intro TGV, thank you very much for the history of the Navitimer. This watch doesn't do it for me, there is to much missing on the dial. I enjoy the navitimer way to much as an aviation enthusiast👍🇮🇹
Thank you David,
Forgive my bad memory, but do you have a Navi? If so which one, if not, which would you buy?
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry lol no problem at all sir, no I do not have a Navi but I would like the Navitimer 1 Chronograph GMT 46.👍🇮🇹
Recently picked up a new but older Colt 44. Water resistant 200m and I can use everything that comes on the dial. I have to be careful while driving, though, as I am in love with the blue dial and gold Breitling logo and tend to get distracted when the sun shines on it. While I get that Breitling is trying to update with world style and tastes, lets hope they don't lose what made them cool to begin with, that connection with aerospace. I agree with a lot of folks that the changing of the winged logo is a mistake. I guess I will have to be on the lookout for older models from now on.
The blue stunner, but the price tag is little bitter then sweet ,I always seems to love the 3 complications my self ,the size perfectly my cup tea, awesome review .
So glad to hear that.
Thank you Ricardo,
Best regards,
TGV
I love this watch on the blue strap. Perfect size and less busy than the regular chronograph versions.
Mine's a 50th anniversary of the original Navitimer. White dial and crock leather. Not an everyday watch, I got a stainless steel Crosswind Chrono for that. But one of my most cherished possessions.
I really prefer your own style Navitimer, yes they may be moving towards the smaller watch size but Navitimers to me will always have a chronograph and will always be a larger watch, they’re supposed to be large for their function. Original Navi’s all day long for me 👍 cheers for the review Tristano 👌
Great video! Also my favorite watch
I think 38mm navi is excellent. but im still not used to the wingless logo. I dont know why the ceo of breitling stated he wanted to tone down the 'aviator theme' of the brand.
Great Review as always Sir..I really like the clearer dial on this!! I’m really considering the New Breitling Colt 44 with the less busy dial... I think it could become an under the radar classic!? Possibly a 2019 purchase.. I really want to add a Breitling in the collection though!, uummm... ?? Or maybe just the Sinn 104? 🤔🤔 Anyway, keep the great work up!! BMJ ENGLAND 🏴
If I had the money I'd definitely buy one of these. It's one of the best looking chronograph watches I have seen.
Great review thanks. With small wrists myself I watched this one with interest. I think I prefer the new Speedmaster 38's in grey or black. What do you think of these?
A lot of time I wanted to buy it but something always happen, it's complete classic, but for the price are some other interesting pieces, good video like always
Exactly why I got a navitimer 92, as its 38mm!
It's a great watch. I've held in person, the quality and the finishes of the case and dial is exceptional, par with other watch in the same price. The 30m water resistant is one of the limitations of the slide rule bezel.
It's pricey but it's priced similar to the competition like omega
I really love your work!
"The most loveable dissapointment". Well said, TGV. In my opinion, Breitling shouldn't have named it a Navitimer. Why not start a new line of watches inspired by the Navitimer? Now people will always compare it to the older chrono Navi's... I still think it's a cracking watch! Especially in 38mm👍. Looking forward to the next one.
Regards,
Koen
Very good video!
Awesome video 👍
Video was put very well together TGV Thank you as Breitling and Fan I can say it..Now as per Navitimer 1 38mm Watch is nice sleek and Kern did brought little past to it...Not sure about Kern future with Breitling but I’ll let time go and unfold to see how he will Keep up the Brand and it’s History..and hope he won’t cheap out and cut quality for quantity to profit and disappoint..
Cheers
Alan
Very weell said Alan, thank you sir!
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry I’m optimist also realist and I Love Breitling just I don’t feel that Hype like in Past like Schneider’s did and have to say I’ll miss Schneider Family they have made Brand Big Bold Breitling and Fancy and not Cuts you pay the price of what you get which was fine with me and Breitling Fans..
I will say one thing I treasure my Breitling Collection from Schneider’s my B01 and Chronomat 39mm panda dial with Valjoux Movement it’s one of a kind and never give up on it..
And hope people will take your advice for price and money get older Breitling as per individuals Taste..
P.S I got my Atmos Clock finally its amazing and very accurate by the Le Coultre Love it👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers
Alan
Great topic!! My next purchase, after I decide between all the versions!
Thank you Dustin.
I could see you with a vintage 806 ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
It's a great watch and I do think that the recent Navitimer 8 collection was somewhat underrated, but the examples I have seen from the new Breitling Premier range are absolutely off the scale stunning and compete directly with what Rolex and Omega are offering, not just Tag or Tudor.
While I understand why they made that three hand _Navi_ in 38mm, I would very much like to have seen them make a larger version too (42mm+ because I am a larger wristed gentleman). But I guess it is what it is and it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Lume would have been nice too. Also I would have liked to have seen it with the excellent 3 hand movement 'borrowed' from Tudor, but that would have made it thicker.
I also very much agree that they should have taken a second look at the water resistance. Surely, with modern materials, modern machining capable of super precision and state of the art computer aided design, I feel that they could have redesigned that case with the minimum of external changes and managed to get that water resistance up to 50m or even 100m.
Aviation always wets my life long enthusiasm so applaud that history and references to period aircraft. Now on the subject I am sure I read somewhere that the Rolex GMT was originally designed for Boeing airline flight deck crews? I'm sure someone may correct me? Anyway I do realise how important a watch was for early flight crews particularly in the last war.Great content again.Thankyou.Len.
Not quite right. Pan Am asked Rolex to design a watch to enable their pilots to easily track local time and home time simultaneously. The result was the iconic GMT Master.
