Thank you for this guide. What a treat to have someone who worked with Sotheby's to tell us how to protect our items. I'm hoping someone in the comments can offer some guidance on my current situation.
My grandmother recently gave me a sterling silver serving bowl that she received as a wedding gift. As it's now an heirloom, I want to take care of it. I have no intention of selling it, but I want to restore it and display it in my home. The flat bowl surface as some pits and superficial scratches that I'm not too concerned about. The pits add character, but if it's possible to burnish the scratches I'd love to know how to do that.
The decorative design has lots of corrosion in the deep crevices. Most of it is a blackish gray, which I think is the very typical kind of tarnish. I want to know how to get in there and get rid of it. There are also some light-gray dull patches in some of the crevices. I don't think that's corrosion. Under a loupe, I see what I'd describe as "brush strokes" imprinted into it, so I think it's maybe some kind of silver polish or other compound that has dried up. So I'm also wondering if maybe I should soak the whole thing in water first to see if that loosens up the paste and gets it out of the way. I was thinking of soaking it in a plastic tub (so we don't get any redox reactions or anything) for a few hours, and then rinsing it under the sink. But that seems so indelicate and I don't know how delicate I need to be here. I have never in my life owned any significantly-sized mass of precious metals or associated alloys.

Thank you very much. I will buy some silver polish and use a soft cotton cloth. I was trying to get away with not buying the polish but after hearing what you said I won’t take a chance...

More of a video on how NOT to clean silver.
So simple silver polish and cotton will clean all the tarnish off and don’t use the aluminum foil acidic method???

What is the best way to get the black out, that is caught in the tiniest grooves in my Wallace Sterling flatware. I haven't used the flatware in several years. UGH

Hi, according to the official V&A website page for caring for silver they suggest that you should leave the tarnish that you can’t easily polish out of those tiny grooves, that is because silver can look dull and lifeless when you polish out those areas. Most upper class people in Europe would leave it because it gives depth to the pattern, but it also lets people know it’s silver instead of nickel or chrome plated ware. Even most silver used for the dining tables of European royal families leave those little spots tarnished, also, over polishing those areas will wear the silver over time. I think most museums, manors, palaces, etc don’t spend too much time polishing out their silver. I worked as a curator at a manor house in Germany for a count and countess and I doubt the countess would spend more than 10 minutes polishing even her largest Candelabra, and they entertained often, so I wouldn’t worry about those areas, your silver will still look beautiful with those tarnished grooves. Additionally when I was a student at Sotheby’s in London I was exposed to lots of fine silver that was never completely tarnish free, particularly because there is a balance between cleaning, polishing, and conservation, and unfortunately too much polishing will damage your pieces over time as you are literally wiping away the silver on a microscopic level every time you polish, that is why antique silver plated pieces need to constantly be re-plated and centuries old silver filigree work is often worn away, so don’t worry about it looking too perfect, learn to appreciate the patina that forms in those areas.

Ketchup and a microfiber towel. Rub the ketchup directly onto the kettle then wait a few minutes and buff off using small circular motions. If there is engraved or decorative embellishments use non whitening toothpaste and a soft bristle children's toothbrush

Today on Value My Stuff: How to Assemble a Car
This Guy: Well first of all, don’t use bricks, they are terribly cumbersome and can damage the finish, and secondly, don’t use bubbles, they are useless and slippery... And that is how you assemble a car.

That's because it is used. Sterling will get scratched with use. The scratches can be mechanically polished out if you want sterling to look brand new. As he indicates, both wire wool and abrasive sponges will leave those scratches.
