Cleaning silver with baking soda & aluminum foil. (Very Easy!)

- This video shows just how easy it is to clean small or large silver pieces using aluminum foil, baking soda and very hot water. The hot water is crucial - warm water from the sink won't do the job - you must get the water boiling or close to boiling for this to work well.
One large sheet of aluminum foil and a few sprinkles of baking soda in very hot water, just make sure the container is big enough to submerge the pieces and that the piece is in contact with the foil.

I bought the biggest aluminum tray I could find at Dollar Tree, then cleaned all of my grandmother's silverware and serving pieces for our Christmas dinner this week. Worked beautifully and SO easy! Thank you!
Now that makes sense I hate polishing my silverware.
Wonderful, happy to hear Cindy.
Tks that is easier the using aluminum foil all the time I'm going to share that with some friends
That’s what I was thinking of using a aluminum pan. Beats that smelly chemical stuff you have to buy if you don’t want to use polish because it scratches and takes a layer of silver off each time you do it. Awesome!
People don’t realize when you polish silver it takes a layer of silver off every time you do it so this is like really good not invasive at least I would think not and you don’t leave scratch marks. And that in a bottle that chemical stuff is so nasty expensive and, it goes too fast. This is awesome information. I’ve seen people out there doing the same thing and adding salt and measuring stuff and making it so much more difficult than he does.
It's called galvanic ionization. The sulphur in the silver-sulphide is being ionized along with the aluminum and dissolved into the sodium bicarbonate medium.
It works amazingly. I come back to this video many times when I clean my silverware. Thank you.
This works Great! The only thing is is that afterwards, the aluminum foil makes my sandwiches taste kinda funny.
😂😂😂
Hilarious!!
😂😂😂
Was having a bad day. Ur coment made me laugh. Thank u..
This comment wins.
WOW!!! I was truly amazed. I tried it on an old Tiffany Sterling silver heart charm bracelet, it was horribly dirty and it came back like new 👀🙀 AMAZING
My tongue is blistered but my silver teeth gleam! My parrot doesn't recognize me! I'll do my leg next.
😄😄😄
I went into the jewellery store with my silver to have it cleaned. A lady in the store told me about this method. I thought she was off her rocker.. Until, today, when i tried it. My gawd, this is some old school Voodoo shiznat aunt Bee Betty Crocker trickery right here! Thank you for your video to show me how it's done! My silver shines brighter than the day i bought it, 17 years ago!
Thank you Sir! My grandfather showed me this method many years ago ❤
Thanks for this - I was looking for a clear step by step and this worked perfectly!
Thanks for sharing this technique! Works well!
I learned this trick somewhere else but having someone demonstrate it was nice. Thank you. I bought my first silver item from a thrift store and I wanted it to look new. The smell of sulpur was really strong and I could see it working away at the tarnish. Way better than just scrubbing it away. Fast.
That chain is gorgeous. Love it
Very effective .. I tried it. Thank you for this great solution..
I just cleaned my silver jewels and it worked really great. Thank you for sharing
Wow, that chain is absolutely beautiful
this is great video. not too long. thank you sir!
Thanks Bob! copied this from my fb in 2015, had forgotten about it, my fav jewelry store -- Images!
works great, thanks, rinsing with normal water after helped alot to remove some swirling and barely used any baking soda
Worked great! Thanks.
It really works! I just cleaned my son’s silver chain which had turned charcoal gray and it shines brilliantly again! The odor the chemical reaction puts off smells just like an old hair permanent.
I only learned of this process becasue I was researching galvanic corrosion. This process will help a bunch with cleaning my mothers silver.
My silver jewelery looks just as great with this diy trick than any jewelry store that has cleaned my very precious silver jewelery.
I just cleaned my favorite Tree of Life Sterling silver from the Southern Gates collection of Savannah, GA.
They look beautiful.
I wish I could post a pic.
Thank you for sharing!
Perfect. Will do this tomorrow with some of my silver stuff.
Great video - thank you!
Very Nicely Done !
Works amazing!
Do you think I can use this on silver american eagles without damaging them? Thanks
Sir, thank you for this! You saved me time and money!
works like a charm!
Thank you so much it really works 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Wow this is a good video and I will try👌
What type of metal jewelry can and can't you use this method for?
can you do this with white gold too?
I use a piece of Aluminum foil about ten times the size of the item, just a dash of salt, about 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with boiling hot water... then I let it sit as I gently stir this mixture until the water has cooled enough to touch as I also use tongs to move the silver around. - Perfect every time. A++
What does the salt do?
A chemist told me you don’t need salt or vinegar as some videos suggest.
Can you do this on stone jewelry set in silver?
Thank you family my ring was beyond repair it was so dull because I was dishes and clean with bleach smh 🤦♂️ my ring was more dull than a grey crayon 😂 but now it’s a clean as a new one and the diamonds are gleaming!!! 💯
Thank you! My silver jewellery is as good as new!
Thank you!
I like the shadow on the grooves of the wings indeed. Always have
I could use a metal pot I don't lie so as not ruin something I use in cooking or eating. I have just the aluminum mug coooker my mon left behind as it is a bit tarnished inside so not using for cooking, liquids or food, ect, but for scooping up water if sink clogged, ect. Turned off or off putting on it ! Lol 😂🤣😁
I like the shadowing on the wings, too.
You could also use a bowl or other dish and put aluminum foil, baking soda, and boiling water in it. Not sure if using stainless steel messes up the process or not, but dishes wouldn't.
I used an aluminum cooking pot decades ago, and sort of ruined some of my sterling flatware that had black down in the design (part of the design). It took it all out! I was young and didn't know any better. So the process definitely WORKS.
Is it safe for stones on the jewelery?
There used to be a fortune 500 silver polishing kit sold on TV. It consisted of a piece of aluminum plate about 8 inches square and about 1/8 inch thick. It was selling for $25 USD. They told you to use Borax or Baking Soda, and use the exact same process as you did. Also disposable aluminum pie plates will work. It is an electrolysis affect that does the job of removing the oxide.
I have some old silver coins from before the mid 60s and some old silver jewellery I clean this way. I never tried this with gold, but I am wondering of the aluminum would go to the gold and sort of do a crude plating on to it because the gold should act as an anode instead of a cathode as like silver would. The electron flow is going from the silver to the aluminum in this case when cleaning the silver. The oxide becoming negatively charged is travelling with the electron flow.
If you were to put the silver in suspended in an alkaline type of solution and put a negative electrode on to the silver, and the positive electrode on to the surrounding metal base, and then connect a 12 Volt battery to the electrodes using the plus on the surrounding metal, I would think the silver would become cleaned. But, this may be overly effective and remove some of the silver from what you are trying to clean. In effect this would be a reverse plating...
I have all my jewelry gold - never ever did i need to clean it.
Amazing!! Just did it. 👍👍
Thank you so much you save my wedding ring work chemical I use at work mess you my ring went home yesterday and did what you say now it shinning so good
Can you do it if it has semi precious stones
Best way to clean !
Whats the foil for
What about pieces that have semi-precious stones or pearls? I notice there's a turquoise bracelet, I was hoping you'd address that as well... :)
I've used it on several different types of gemstones and it has never seen to hurt them. Hope this helps you.
Big thanks.
Can you do this with gold plated silver
I have a silverplate (I think) chalice / goblet type thing, long stem, etc. I'd forgotten where it was, and when I retrieved it, it had a light blue layer of oxidation, dead center, only in the cup part. 😐 There's no way it can be placed in a bowl so that the inner blue part touches the aluminim. Any suggestions? I could just put baking soda in it, and pour boiling water over that, but will that work without the aluminum foil? Or should I just reverse it: put the baking soda into the cup, add the boiling water, and then put / smush some aluminum foil over / onto that? 🤔
Pour the liquid in the chalice (all the way to the rim) and then toss a piece of aluminum foil into the liquid solution. The tarnish will only be removed where the liquid is touching and only if there is aluminum foil also in contact with the liquid
Does this work for silver silverware? I need to clean my Christofle silverware and scared to mess with it lol
I got a sterling silver necklace, not too tarnished but I want it shining again, will this work? Or even damage it in any way?
Naw if it’s actually sterling silver it Should be fine
@@BEEFYP.I.M.P. I forgot I ever used this lmao, it worked great. Thinking about doing it again soon
Instead of adding got water can we add something else to get same result? As I want to clean silver idols that I can't dip in hot water.
I understand, warm water will also work, but just leave the idols in them for longer.
And tell them about the spa.
When laying down the aluminum foil do you put the shiny side up wards so the bsoda and foil can activate the tarnish removing process but I’ve also read and watched videos saying it’s better to turn over and let the jewelry sit on the dull side for Desired results the aluminum foil
Or does it even matter I’ve seen a couple videos where they say you need to put the shiny side up and then other one say you need to put the dull side up to pthe jewelry on I was just wondering if you can give me any tips. Like I said I’m getting so many mixed messages from different videos saying that depending on the side of the aluminum foil you use it will Only remove the stains and tarnish if you use one side or another . that you
probably doesn't matter, I'm assuming. as long as it's in the chemical bath, the water circulates on all sides, all the chemicals are present, so the electrolysis process will work.
The reason one side is shiny is because two pieces of foil are pressed and formed together. The shiny side is the roller side and the dull side is where it was pressed against another piece of foil. It's aluminum on both sides so it shouldn't matter.
I m trying this now and wil update the results 😃
I try this and it work real good I'll never go to a store to clean my sliver again
Whats the use of Aluminium?
My wife has some silver jewelry that has freshwater pearls. Will this technique damage the pearls?
i dont think baking soda or hot water damages pearls, but the reaction that happens between silver baking soda and aluminum is independent
I’m wondering too most of us keep baking soda in the fridge. Maybe you can recycle your baking soda from the fridge to do it. I wonder if that would work
Can you use bi-carb baking soda for this?
Psalm 37:4 baking soda is the colloquial term for sodium bicarbonate
Could I use a disposable aluminum steam tray instead of the foil?
Great idea, yes should work as well.
@@Imagesjewelers thank you, I'll try later today and will let you know how it went.
It worked well, easy cleanup too. Cleaned around 11 SS neck chains and they are sparkling, especially after finishing with a silver polishing cloth.
@@sandradefalco Awesome to hear! Glad that worked, great idea!
Why do you need alliminum
Noone ever says which side should be aluminum foil - mat or shiny?
It won't make a difference
Hell yeah!
Add half a cup of vinegar and you'll get even faster results. You can sometimes just dip a heavily oxidized piece of silver and it'll come out clean.
i presume this method is not safe to use with genuine pearls - please clarify 🤷♀️
Is necessary to use aluminium foil?
yes
jeswant nandakumar fj P.M. Rex I’m
It needs aluminum. I don't guess it would have to be foil if you had other aluminum.
I generally use the cloth to clean my jewelry. But this method is great. It is quicker and it is great for small pieces like earrings.
Awesome thank you I need this for coins
Can this process safely be used on jewelry with stones.
🧐👍👌
I think we should consider a well ventilated area, ehh?
grandpa iced up
You can also use white toothpaste and brush it really good after it has been soaked in hot baking soda water.
Toothpaste and brush works but you are essentially skimming off small layers of the silver frm friction.
Don't try on pandora jewelry, mine got a bronze shine
I got baking sauder
Will this work without using aluminum, baking soda, or hot water? I don't have any of that, because I spent all my money on silver. :(
How did it work out? Did you use it on american eagles by chance?
This works Great! The only thing is is that afterwards, the aluminum foil makes my sandwiches taste kinda funny.
What happens if you leave the silver in it too long?
Baking soder.
I used my sterling flatware every day for three years. It had a slight patina, but nothing objectionable. My sister cleaned it with this method. Now my sterling turns black in three months. Don't do this! It pits the surface of the sterling.
really?
Does the work with Gold ?
Gold doesn't tarnish. Why would you do this?
no, only silver-- Gold should not tarnish
yes gold does tarnish
Gold does tarnish 🙃
@@freereign911 then it is not gold actually, but perhaps just thin golden cover made by spraying, and "tarnish" is just actually lost parts in golden layer.
or the gold is gold, but a cheap, low cost alloy, where gold is just a fraction of it
In
This is hooey. It didn't do a darn thing to help my tarnished chains.
Then your chains are not silver or you didn't follow the very simple instructions. It never fails on silver.
