The smell that comes off is actually hydrogen gas. When the corrosive (baking soda) is mixed with a metal (aluminium foil) and then catalyzed with heat (boiling water) a reaction occurs. This is because the sodium in the baking soda and the aluminium form a presipitate (sodium aluminate) and release CO2 (carbon dioxide)and H2 (Hydrogen gas). The electrolysis which cleans the silver occurs because the Aluminium is electronegative and the silver is electropositive, so when they touch a sort of electric current is created. That being said Hydrogen gas (and carbon dioxide) is quite toxic... I would not suggest holding it anywhere near your face and always be sure to do this in a well ventilated area. Hydrogen gas is also volatile, so make sure you are nowhere near any open flames or ignition sources... sorry for the long winded comment. It just seems that many people are noticing the "funny smell" when they clean their silver, so I thought I would share some insight & help people avoid potential dangers.
Hydrogen gas does not smell. The smell comes from hydrogen sulphide gas (also given off by rotting eggs) which is formed when the aluminium sulphide product reacts with water. This site www.compoundchem.com/2013/12/16/removing-tarnish-silver/ gives an excellent explanation of the reaction.

I just want to say thanks for sharing your method and it worked like a charm for me! I originally tried a method that was similar where I rubbed the baking soda directly onto the item with a little water mixed in and while it worked it took several tries and wayyy longer. @@hani2729 for gold i am trying lets see
@@aena5995 good luck then
@@hani2729 ok so it turned rose goldish with kethchup and golden with tooth paste so now my earring dont match ugh any suggestions?
I just want to say thanks for sharing your method and it worked like a charm for me! I originally tried a method that was similar where I rubbed the baking soda directly onto the item with a little water mixed in and while it worked it took several tries and wayyy longer. With this method I didn’t even have to use the fork or anything it lifted the tarnish so quickly! This is my new go to method as I like to wear my necklace in the shower which causes it to tarnish a little
