    If you're a wearer of silver jewellery, this quick trick may change your life forever. I rarely shine my jewellery, since using an old fashioned cloth takes a bit too much time and elbow grease. I did some research and discovered a fool-proof way of removing the tarnish from any silver piece, without much effort.
    All you're going to need is:
    ↠ Aluminum foil go.magik.ly/ml...
    ↠ Baking soda go.magik.ly/ml...
    ↠ Boiling water go.magik.ly/ml...
    ↠ Silver Polishing Cloth go.magik.ly/ml...
    ↠ Anti Tarnish Tabs here: go.magik.ly/ml...
    Note that this method of cleaning can potentially ruin gemstones or diamonds which have been inlaid into a jewellery piece. I would recommend using a polishing cloth for a "jewelled" item.

    The smell that comes off is actually hydrogen gas. When the corrosive (baking soda) is mixed with a metal (aluminium foil) and then catalyzed with heat (boiling water) a reaction occurs. This is because the sodium in the baking soda and the aluminium form a presipitate (sodium aluminate) and release CO2 (carbon dioxide)and H2 (Hydrogen gas). The electrolysis which cleans the silver occurs because the Aluminium is electronegative and the silver is electropositive, so when they touch a sort of electric current is created. That being said Hydrogen gas (and carbon dioxide) is quite toxic... I would not suggest holding it anywhere near your face and always be sure to do this in a well ventilated area. Hydrogen gas is also volatile, so make sure you are nowhere near any open flames or ignition sources... sorry for the long winded comment. It just seems that many people are noticing the "funny smell" when they clean their silver, so I thought I would share some insight & help people avoid potential dangers.

      Hydrogen gas does not smell. The smell comes from hydrogen sulphide gas (also given off by rotting eggs) which is formed when the aluminium sulphide product reacts with water. This site www.compoundchem.com/2013/12/16/removing-tarnish-silver/ gives an excellent explanation of the reaction.

    I used this to cleaned an old pair of earnings I loved, stoped using due to being very tarnished. This method worked so well it looks brand new, when I took it out after soaking it, I then used an old toothbrush and dishwasher soap and srubed a little. Definitely recommend!! Will be using other my other pieces for sure

    This works very well... and to always use a silver polishing cloth actually, over-time, wipes away the valuable metal. This method does not require any polishing strength or effort and makes everything nearly 100% brand new again.

    I have worn silver jewelry for years and years and never taking my necklaces off, I would only clean them about once a year when they got a little tarnished. For some strange reason now that I’m having some health issues my necklaces are getting so dark so quick that I have to clean them every 2 months. Thank you for your video 🌻

  • @geofiggy

    Madeline, you're the first "intelligent" person that is absolutely right when you say that it doesn't matter which side of the Aluminum foil goes up (shiny or dull) as this happens because of the manufacturing process as one side goes against the "rollers" as the foil is rolled onto its carboard core.
    Thanks for the cleaning process. God bless. 🖖🏼🤟🏼

    I just want to say thanks for sharing your method and it worked like a charm for me! I originally tried a method that was similar where I rubbed the baking soda directly onto the item with a little water mixed in and while it worked it took several tries and wayyy longer. With this method I didn’t even have to use the fork or anything it lifted the tarnish so quickly! This is my new go to method as I like to wear my necklace in the shower which causes it to tarnish a little

    I did this not knowing much about rings and it ruined the dark areas of my ring. I found out after that the dark side of my ring is deliberately oxidised. So by doing this I washed the black out and it turned silvery brown. SO much money down the drain. So if anyone is reading this. If you have black on your ring, be careful, it may ruin it.

    • @MadelineDellaMora
      @MadelineDellaMora  2 роки тому

    Works well. Just wonder if it’s harmful to silver?

    • @MadelineDellaMora
      @MadelineDellaMora  2 роки тому

      Hey there! This isn’t a harmful cleaning routine. My silver has lasted very well for over 10 years since starting this method. What is harmful is letting your silver tarnish repeatedly, because each layer of tarnish is silver lost when you clean it off. So look at the links in my description for products to avoid silver tarnishing in the first place: plastic zipper bags and anti-tarnish tape. Never store silver outside or in a box since the oxidation is what would “harm” your piece! Thanks so much and please subscribe if you haven’t already ☺️

    Hydrogen gas is relatively odorless! Silver has an affinity for sulfur compounds and much darkened silver owes its tarnish to ambient sulfides and sulfates - you learn this in the darkroom. When silver is reduced by an anti tarnish medium the sulfur is dissolved into the reducing medium. That may be where the smell comes from. I doubt that anyone would notice the smell of H2 in situations as in the video. Also, such a cleaning experiment would NEVER produce enough pure H2 to represent a combustion hazard.
