Yeah, if you want to hear both sisters sing, you have to do “Dog and Butterfly”, it’s a ballad, the softer side of Heart, but oh my, it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard!

The lead guitarist is Roger Fisher, whose brother Mike is the "Magic Man" that Ann is singing about. Dreamboat Annie is one of the best debut albums ever. My next pick for a reaction is also from that album: "How Deep It Goes."

Thats Roger Fisher shredding that guitar. One of the greatest and one of the least appreciated guitarist of the seventies. If we're gonna be completely honest, he taught Nancy how to shred on the guitar before he was no longer in the band. Roger was a co-founder of the band before the Wilson sisters were even in the picture. Ann came first. When Nancy was later brought into the band, she was basically just a young folk singer who played acoustic guitar. She learned a lot from Roger in those years he was still in the band. He created a lot of the cool guitar riffs of Heart's early songs. The classic "Barracuda" riff was his. He was the main lead guitar in the band. Howard Lease who was also a top player in the band often doubled on lead guitar with Roger.

    • @moonbeam2062
      @moonbeam2062 2 роки тому +2

THANK YOU! for pointing all that out about Roger! Without Roger, Heart would not have been the band it was in their eariy years! One song that really spotlights Roger's skillful lead guitar playing is "Sing Child" from this same album. You can really hear the influence Jimi Hendrix had on him in that one tune as well as Zeppelin.

This song is the perfect example of "The Heart Sound". Amazing vocals, "teasing" guitar solo rifts, "music drops" at random, shift in focus of lyrics to notes, out of the world "angelic" harmonies, and an underlying 'drum line' to hold it all together.
PS: When Ann and Nancy harmonize in the later half of the song? That is what the mythical "Sirens" must have sounded like to lure sailors to their doom.

    HEY, Happy Birthday Jay!
This song > Heart are the masters of funk. So masterful, you wouldn't think it's funk. But if you listen very carefully, you'll hear it. Then you'll see how magically they hid it. Unifying the word content of the song, MAGIC, with the structure of the song. Masters.

Finally!! I've been after you guys for months to listen to this song. But I'm glad you waited till your birthday, Jay. Happy Birthday! For me this is a song I never get tired of hearing, like The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, Black Sabbath's War Pigs, and Chicago's 25
or 6 to 4. For your next Heart song, I recommend Even It Up or Heartless.

"Dreamboat Annie" is a total classic! Lots of timeless cuts on that album

  • @stevedahlberg8680

Notice how the bass guitar and the kick drum are together on the downbeat at the beginning of the verse and then when it hits that "try to understand" part, the bass and kick switch to the offbeat to give it that funky or staggered feeling and then right back together on the downbeat when it resumes. It does that in general in the second half of the verse and then it's even further syncopated in the chorus. As someone below said, quite a sophisticated arrangement.
Oh yeah, and in that section that you called trippy, Jordan, I love the whole idea of including that. Suddenly It's kind of this mix of funk and rock and soul, the thwacking rhythm guitar still has that bite, you still have the synth in there, and now they have added a layer of conga drumming. Congas, not bongos which are the little shallow higher sounding hand drums joined together in a pair, but congas are the deeper more resonant tall drums, usually grouped two or three together. It's a really wonderful combination and it allows you to groove and regroup before they punch home the climax.
Probably my favorite on the album is the combination of Dreamboat Annie Fantasy Child (as opposed to Dreamboat Annie, the last song on side A of the record or Dreamboat Annie the name of the album, lol) leading right into their huge hit Crazy On You. When you listen to the album, that first part is about a minute long acoustic introduction to Crazy On You, and I really I miss hearing that when they only play Crazy On You on the radio. Sometimes they will play both together but on the album, you're listening to this absolutely beautiful acoustic introduction and then it goes right into Crazy on You. It's the perfect setup. I can remember when I first learned to play that acoustic riff in high school, it felt great. It's just so fun to play, it's got a lot of hammering on and pulling off and harmonics and stuff. And it leads so perfectly into the opening of Crazy On You. Here is a link to the two of them combined, total about 6 minutes long.

My cousin grew up just east of Seattle and apparently the Wilson sisters were a couple years older than him from his same high school and he was a big fan and he's also a really good guitar player. But once we were talking about Heart and he said that he was at school and it was about to be lunch break and the word went around to hurry up and get to the gymnasium because Ann and Nancy had showed up and they were jamming together over the lunch hour. I wish I could have been there!
This was my sister's theme song for a little while while she was a teen, she used to blast it. I didn't mind because I owned the entire album and played it frequently.

Happy birthday! The greatness of this era of music was that it took you on a journey from beginning to end. If you were not familiar with the music and just came in the in the background or in the middle of the song you wouldn’t understand the greatness of the song. But when you hear from beginning to end especially with headphones on, every note works together to take you on a trip.

Nancy iis playing the acoustic guitar throughout this tune you can hear the big strums that kind of Shimmer on their way into the chorus. At this point they had to leave gataris in the band as well, so that is where the heavier stuff is coming from in the solos. I believe one of the guitarist doubled on keyboards as needed. You guys had a really great reaction to the band Jethro Tull quite a while ago, you might be interested to know that tall was a huge influence on early heart. There are many interesting kind of Celtic in acoustic fairytale feeling songs on this particular record as well. Kind of the deep Cuts as it were. Good stuff.

Great exhibition of talent from every member of HEART on this song. From the melody to the soloing, it's probably their bestest overall effort. SING CHILD SING is similar in that everybody takes solos (especially the drummer) but it's a completely silly-ass tune and weird on purpose.

Magic Man was the first hit off their first album. It was recorded at Mushroom Studio in Vancouver (Canada) when the band was still living there. The magic part of the rich sound was a Universal Audio vacuum tube mixing console custom-built by Bill Putnam. This recording console had been in use in United Studio A at 6050 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood since 1957, and had recorded hundreds of hits by such artists as Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. Once in Vancouver it was to go-to studio for local artists like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Loverboy, Sarah McLachlan, Images in Vogue and Queensryche.
