This was Tommy Shaw on both lead guitar, and lead vocalist, he's one of the best guitarist in the word, completely self taught, he can't read music, and he can't read charts, but what he can do is rip out a guitar solo like nobody else, even now, he's almost 70 years old and he's still one of the best guitarist in the world. Check him out in "Live from Daryl's house" unbelievable performance.

Hey there buddy! First of all, I love your name! Second, thanks so much for letting everyone know what an amazing talent Tommy Shaw is! He is such an underrated guitar player! However, (and I hope you'll forgive me) on the album track of Renegade, JY is playing the solo. Just listen for the whammy bar, and I'm sure you'll recognize him. He was one of the first guitar players in the '70s to start using a string lock beneath the headstock of his Strat. That's why his tremolo (whammy bar) was always so prevalent (and so cool!) in his guitar playing. Thanks for understanding, and keep rocking! 🤟🎸

@@lisaberry862 Thanks Lisa, yeah I love, love, love watching these two playing together, I can only imagine how great of friends they must be, they been together for so long, JY is always smiling, he's so long and tall, tommy is 5 foot nothing, and probably weights 100 lbs soaking wet, but they are AWESOME to watch. Have you seen Tommy on Live from Daryl's house, that's so fun to watch, or when he played with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, such a kind man to do that show with those kids, it was fun to hear stuff from his Bluegrass Album from that show.

OMG, what a fantastic reaction!! I have to say, it's quite refreshing to see a young couple like yourselves (I'm in my 60's) getting such satisfaction from an old school song like this!! Almost brought me to tears. Music like this was my life's backround music growing up in the 70's and, unfortunately, just one more reason why my parents & I didn't get along. You two got the same satisfaction out of the song I got as a teenager, but my parents just thought I was a lowlife because of it. Music today, doesn't get into my soul like it did back then, & you two just proved to me that I was right... it was an awesome era for rock music, it's not garbage, & I'm not a lowlife!! (their words, not mine). I'm sure everyone will tell you about more STYX tunes that absolutely rock, so please indulge yourselves and take their advice. I promise you won't be disappointed!

I was fortunate I am nearly 50. My parents grew up in the 60s they were 18 in 1969 so they were all about rock music. My dad loved the doors, the stones and The Who. So when I started listening to grunge in the early 90s he was like “well it’s different but not bad” he just said “why do all the songs sound depressing?” I said if you were from Seattle you would probably sound depressed all the time too. 😂

Styx -- Another EXCELLENT selection. Probably their best known songs are "Blue Collar Man", "Babe", "Lady", and this one. "Blue Collar Man" is along the same rocking vibe as this one. "Lady" & "Babe" are ballads.
However, I have 2 other recommendations- "Crystal Ball" & "Snowblind". Both are excellent rockers that show the range of the band.

I just about wore out the needle and record back in the day playing that from start to finish. Hard to chose a "best" Styx song but "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Snowblind", "Fooling Yourself", "Blue Collar Man", "The Best Of Times" are all super good ones. For a great slow tune check out "Babe" from the Cornerstone album or "Lady" off Styx II.

Underrated? They had a whole heap of multi-platinum selling albums and was one of the biggest bands of all in the late 70s and early 80s. Which I'm very happy about, don't get me wrong, but we can't say they didn't get the success they deserved, because they most certainly did :-)

This is Tommy Shaw leading on this one. Styx was great as they basically had multiple leads so the style could and did change frequently. Great live band as well. See if you can get some live performances. From Tommy Shaw songs - Blue Collar Man, Boat on the River, Crystal Ball, Man in the Wilderness, Fooling Yourself and Just Get Through this Night are favorites (but truthfully, there are no bad Tommy Shaw led songs). From James Young - Miss America, Heavy-Metal Poisoning, Snowblind (shared with TS), and Witch Wolf. From Dennis DeYoung - Castle Walls, Suite Madame Blue, The Grand Illusion, and Come Sail Away are my favs. I really love in recent years that they have a relationship with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and have done concerts with them - once with Styx and one just solo Tommy Shaw. They are fantastic live performances and so fun to see all the young teens getting to play with them. Just caught one airing the other night and was fun to watch again.

There are TWO variations of Styx" There's songs like "Come Sail Away" written by longtime band leader Dennis DeYoung which were always more theatrical in nature, and then there's "Renegade" written by band member Tommy Shaw which always leaned more towards straight rock and roll. These two different styles brought versatility to the group, although ultimately leading to the band's breaking up for a time before reforming later.

    • @Vaelsung1
      @Vaelsung1 3 роки тому +5

Dennis DeYoung was the one who turned Tommy Shaw's song "Renegade" from a slower more bluesy song as originally written into a killer rock song. I would HIGHLY recommend "Queen of Spades"(starts out mellow like "Renegade" and then explodes into one of their heaviest, most menacing and majestic songs), "Blue Collar Man", "Midnight Ride" and "Miss America". Thank you for another great STYX reaction video and for becoming two of their newest fans :) Such a great band with so many incredible songs that cover the widest musical range and genres of any band, especially with 3 different songwriters and singers.

Yeah, this album started most of Generation X's foray into rock music. "Queen of Spades" was the first rock song I ever heard. This whole album is really a special album. Best songs from Styx: Lady, Lorelei, Midnight Ride, Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Mademoiselle, Ballerina, Shooz, Jennifer, Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, The Grand Illusion, Sing For the Day, Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Pieces of Eight, Queen of Spades, Great White Hope, Borrowed Time, Lights, Babe, First Time, Boat on a River, Rockin' The Paradise, The Best of Times, Snowblind, Too Much Time on My Hands, Half Penny, Two Penny; Haven't We Been Here Before, Cold War, Don't Let It End, Double Life, Edge of the Century, Love at First Sight, Show Me the Way, Dear John, While There's Still Time, Waiting for Our Time, Radio Silence, The Fight of Our Lives, and Save Us From Ourselves.

Fun fact. I started grad school at Purdue in fall of 1972. I was told that Styx, having been formed earlier in that year in Chicago, was coming down almost every weekend to play free concerts at Purdue, mostly doing covers of other rock tunes. Then, in the fall, they signed a recording contract and hit the big time. The next time they came to the Purdue - West Lafayette campus, it was far from a free concert.

I was doing a Car show at Sea World Orlando a few years, and Styx played a concert at the stage there, Sea World had placed large screen displays all over the part so that the guests who could not get into the stage area could see them as well. The show was supposed to be an hour long but went well over that due to encores, every single person there was singing every song, on their feet the whole time, the lead singer of the Styx, Tommy Shaw, said that they never had really done a concert during the day, but to be able to see everyone so into their music that they just wanted to keep playing. It filled one of my childhood dreams to see them live, was truly an amazing experience.

"Blue Collar Man" "Crystal Ball" "Fooling Yourself (the angry young man)" "Too Much Time on My Hands" "Snowblind" "Suite Madame Blue" are all great, up tempo songs, along with "Babe" & "Lorelei" which are love songs. This song singlehandedly changed my taste in music. I was 8 when this song came out, maybe 9. I know it came out in 1979, my birthday is this month, so..
I do believe that it had an influence on me playing drums in band in elementary school. I regretfully quit in middle school. Money was tight for our family at the time.
I did get to see Tommy Shaw, the singer for this song, play and sing it at a concert in the 90's. He was in a band called Damn Yankees. I was just telling my roommate that him playing the song would make my year, and they started it. I almost cried.

Styx doesn’t have a “most popular song”. With three writers/singers, they have a very diverse sound. They have rockers like “Renegade” and love songs like “Babe”.
One constant about Styx is that many of their albums follow a theme. When you listen to a Styx album from start to finish, you feel like you’ve just finished reading a book or watched a movie.
    For recommendations:
Fooling Yourself has a very cool keyboard riff, While it is not as heavy as Renegade, it tells a story. Sung by Tommy Shaw.
Queen of Spades, like Renegade, starts slow and then explodes into wonderful madness. Sung by Dennis DeYoung.
Half Penny, Two Penny is a banger from beginning to end, but tells a story as well. Sung by James Young.

I don't happen to have any musical talent, aside from appreciating it, but I've always been surrounded by people with TONS of it (so many of my friends have been in bands, and my mom is literally the best singer EVER!) I've listened to Styx since the beginning of their career. Their most rocking song by far is Miss America.

The heart beat running through the song as always been irresistible and then the primal scream that startled me the first time I heard it. Styx has many great songs, but "Renegade" is it for me!

Dennis DeYoung is the musical guy, Tommy Shaw is rockabilly, and JY has the darkest songs. And they co wrote a lot of songs, so never a boring moment. Their earliest stuff was the hardest.

"Fooling Yourself" is an amazing Styx musical journey with a cool message. As you see in the comments, the band has a deep repertoire of timeless music. 🙂

Totally opposite of Renegade is "Babe", Styx's only number 1 hit. One of the best ballads ever written. You guys will love it!

So fun watching people who love music hearing a song for the first time. Livin vicariously and remembering my own first experience hearing the song. Which admittingly was kinda similar. This was a kick ass time back in the day and holds up quite well.
