DIY Filing Cabinet Out Of Wood

  • In the floating desk build we saw a few weeks ago I make some DIY Filing Cabinet Out Of Wood as the legs of the floating desk in the corner. I actually made two wood cabinets, one was a filing cabinet and one was more of a set of desk drawers with various different drawer sizes. These are a very simple woodworking project that are a huge improvement in space and looks compared to an old nasty metal filing cabinet. These are much deeper so you can put way more files in them but are an easy build that you can quickly complete and makeover your office space.

    The cabinets are made from a combination of 1/2" and 3/4" plywood. 1/2" for the drawers and 3/4" for the cabinets and the drawer fronts. You will need a bit of edge banding, some drawers slides and a few other items that are all called out in the material list of the plans.

    I made the Murphy bed for my guest room, but I had to do it in two days so I had to cut some corners but it still works great! I did do the floating shelves for legs & that is super helpful for putting my candles on. Now I want to do these cabinets because the crappy "wood" filing cabinets that I bought fell apart during assembly!! (I just keep on repainting the metal filing cabinets that were given to me).

    Love your vids, man. They give me confidence and show me that projects like this really aren't so scary. Lol
    I dig some of the new camera angles too. POV stuff is a cool twist.

    Awesome video Tyler, great content as always!
    I do have a question for you though.
    Do you mind explaining why you use a 1.0mm tip when spraying gf white poly? I will be using this finish on a kitchen rebuild and planned on spraying with my Mini Mite 4 and a 1.3mm tip per the manufacturers specs. Have you had better luck using a 1.0mm tip?
    Thanks in advance for your response!

    Awesome job!...Subscribed......the timing of finding this video is spooky...designing a built-in secretary desk and the woof wants a file cabinet in the bottom. Such a nice clean execution!.....any tip-over problems? Link to handle jig? Link to paint lids?

    Nice build Tyler. I noticed your use of the Fuji Sprayer. I plan on purchasing one in the next week or so. I seem to recall you had an earlier video on the 3M system addition for using your sprayer - I may remember that wrong. Not sure I am ready to go to the full cost of adding the 3M system. But, I did notice you using different types of spray guns on this project, gravity feed vs. the 1 qt bottle. Now that you have been spraying for awhile, which type of spray gun would you start with gravity feed or 1 qt can sprayer (not sure I am using right terminology (T-60 or GPX in Fuji terms)? Using the sprayer for small cabinets and small wood working projects. Once again good build. I like the idea of the separate base allowing you to adjust height after your other parts of the build were finished. Keep up the good work.

    Tyler, another question. In the cut list for the drawers (1/2" plywood) the heights of the front and rear of the two large drawers (green and pink) are different. For the green front and rear pieces height is given as 6 5/8" while for the pink side pieces height is given as 6 9/16". I did not discover this until after cutting. I assume 6 9/16 is the correct dimension. My bad for not double checking the cut list for inaccuracies or perhaps there is an updated list?

    I watch another youtuber that does their drawer bottoms the same way but he runs a chamfer bit around the edges and it hides the plys. Just replying to a comment you made about seeing the plys. Enjoy your channel

    Tyler, good plans but I just found (I think!) an issue with the cut list. You show a total of four 1 1/2" x 14 1/8" rails on the 3/4" plywood cut list. Since there are two cabinets there should be a total of eight, four per cabinet, correct? Not a big issue but a small irritation I discovered just after I put the tablesaw away...:-)

    • @Ashley-lr1zs
      @Ashley-lr1zs 2 роки тому

      Same! Also didn’t have any triangles on the cut list so I had to go back and do those as well.

    Using your plans (paying customer here!) and some arithmetic, I come up with a 1/2" space between the bottom of the drawer and the top of that bottom cross-piece. At 10:07 of the video you have a spacer that looks more like 1/4". If I am just wrong please set me straight. Otherwise, please advise on which is best. I really like your approach to building stuff and your videos but a little more detail and a longer video would be appreciated.
    Never mind, I see my mistake. I am thinking that gap is 3/16" and the side gap is 1/8".
