I approve of wheels! I gave up finding a permanent layout in my workshop, years ago. Everything that can go on wheels, does. And that corner weld, was nice!
Good idea, I made a side cabinet for my tool box with a regular size 2 drawer file cabinet. Put two shelves in it to hold aerosol and some of my supplies. Riveted the drawer fronts together and even made the lock functional so it is lockable. Turned out great, thinking of making another one.
I look forward to your vlog it is always a way to repurpose something that is otherwise junk I have thrown away many file cabinet but now i will be repurposing them thank you
Hey thanks. I've passed along a fair amount of filing cabinets myself but for some reason this one has stuck around and I was at the point of getting rid of it. I guess it will find a home in my garage now.
Deep file cabinets like that are good for bulky tools that come in cases. They won't take up space in your main box that way and are protected from dirt. And you could lock them up. Good job on adding a drawer! Looks good 👍
I used to really like those plastic cases. These days they don't want to give out those cases and tools come with bags. I have a few of those plastic cases I've cut the guts out of and use for tool boxes that go into the trunks of vehicles.
I pick up those cases whenever I can. Yard sales, garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, etc... Customized the insides and they are Amazing for holding different tools and look very innocuous when transporting personal protection devises to and from the practice-range...
When you showed the piano dolly with wheels I thought great idea to bolt it under the cabinet. Makes it taller. Now it’s easy to roll around in all directions, quiet when rolling and easy to roll out with the tools needed to work on my vehicle. Also a piece of 1 inch plywood attached on top with a small vice would come in handy. Great job! Great idea! Thanks you amaze me every time.
Great idea! I have converted a 5 drawer and a 3 drawer for storing big tools, but your idea is great for smaller stuff. I built an angle iron base and used 3” casters, even full of tools they roll easy around the shop. Keep the great ideas coming!
I had a few standard ones years and years ago; they were just too deep and everything got lost in them. I got rid of them in favor of a store bought tool box and didn't look back. I have missed having a few gigantic hold everything drawers though and I think with will fill the void.
@@sixtyfivefordhey, i tried out the bungees. they are awesome! best ones i ever had. thanks to you, i'll never buy another of those pos white bungees that die in the sun again. i think i can reuse the hooks on them by doubling over the ends and putting hog rings on them like the crap ones do. i'll let you know how it works.
What a great idea! I see plenty of free file cabinets on the web. Now I'll have to get some and convert them to tool boxes! Thanks for showing that to us!

I bought four of the four drawer full size cabinets cheap and placed them side by side in my shop. Those things will swallow a huge amount of power tools and other large tools.
I did the same thing. I actually have 5 - 5 drawer deep heavy duty filing cabinets stacked side by side. Mine are loaded up with heavy machine tools, drill indexes, reamers, lathe chucks, etc... The commercial duty file cabinets are built super strong with full extension heavy duty drawer slides. I paid $100 for all 5. Best money I've spent in years.
I have 6 HON filing cabinets in my shop and got them off an online auction for real cheap as they are are great for tools. I like your idea putting wheels on them as i just placed 1x4’s under mine... thank for the great tips...👍👍👍
What a great solution! When I had a barn I had some of the normal width ones which I got for free. Mine had full depth drawers, rather than that file frame arrangement. Great for power tools, air tools, welding masks, anything. Room on the top for the all important kettle for my bench tea!
Great idea, I've thrown out plenty of those old file cabinets .....bad one on me, I really like the tool box idea. I've put most tools, boxes and other shop items on harbor freight dolly's.....the whole shop is almost mobile! Next project was to make a little cart for my 2 small welders and supplies using the bigger HF dolly, sides will be made of plywood. I'm not much of a metal guy....still learning. Great tip on scoring and bending even though I have a break. If you put a piece of angle iron or even straight piece of metal next to the score (try clamping to table) it can help bend sheet metal that is a little stubborn :) Really like the idea of dividing that big drawer space in two. Thanks for the vid!!!
I spent a large portion of my early working career being a master woodworker and think it is underrated in today's workshop. You can accomplish so much with wood.
Moe, another great video. I love the score and bend idea. I used to have an old steel desk. I think it weighed over 200 pounds. It would have made a great shop bench with a plywood piece added to the top to protect saw blades. Nobody wants them anymore and they can also be found for free.
I've passed up a few metal desks in my travels. I generally feel like I need to own it, walk up to it, dream of the possibilities, size it up, pull and push a few drawers, then I lift/try to lift a side and that's when I realize my wife doesn't have the same grand plans I do.
@@sixtyfiveford I stopped to look at this really cool old wooden motorboat for sale along the highway. A couple was standing there inspecting it. As I approached the boat the mans wife began yelling at me, " Please buy this boat before he does."
Always pick them up alongside the road. List them on craigslist for $20-$30 and always sells quickly. Picked up one that was loaded with oil filters and ammo. 9mm and 30-06 sold all of it and made $100 and kept the heavy duty file cabinet. Great tool storage and adding the second drawer is genius.
That's awesome. I've bought a lot of filing cabinets at auctions for a few bucks for a whole lot or free. I stopped taking the ugly colors as they're impossible to sell.
Great build as usual. I currently have 3 old heavy 2 drawer cabinets in my shop. I like the deep drawers for corded tools that don't have cases. The one in my wood shop works great for smaller cased tools, router bits, boxes of various fasteners. I like the idea of painting them, mine are all the old green ones.
New to the channel and I like it! Great use of free materials. Thanks for sharing as it gets the brain gears churning on how to make something out of things that get thrown away. Thanks!
I'm trying to come up with a way to build a custom tool cart with a heavy duty drawer and the drawer part was perplexing me. I think you just solved that problem for me. Thanks!
You can drill small holes along a line you want to bend in sheet metal, then weld them shut. Ive done it both ways. I usually do the score method on the thicker metals and the hole method on sheet metal. But you can also get abrasive blades for your skill saw and that way you can set your depth of cut to ensure you won't come through.
On thicker steel I will generally pop the angle grinder through in a few spots(especially the ends) and kind of do a combination of score/drill. Skill saw is a great idea. I actually have a metal cutting skill saw that I always forget I own.
@@sixtyfiveford yea. I've actually got a couple carbide skill saw blades that cut plate steel like butter. One is for cutting steel under .125 thick. The other is for .125~.25/.375? I forget how thick is recommended I've only cut up a bunch of 3/16" corten steel, 1/4" diamond plate and a bunch of expanded steel. It was like cutting plywood of the same thickness. The only downside is they're expensive and they can't be sharpened. Forgot to mention, awesome video. I've been collecting all kinds of metal office furniture since the Meltdown. I've got a whole garage full of it. I scored a bunch of desks that are cool because they're modular. I got one wall lined with just modular desk drawers. a bunch of them are the half drawers like tool boxes. I've got two tanker desks identical that I want to stack on top of each other and turn it into a standing workbench. But haven't felt like doing all the body work LOL that's a great idea about putting a drawer inside the drawer. I never thought of that. I was just thinking the other day that I haven't seen your posts in while. I'm glad I'm back in sync. I like your videos. They're always along the lines of things I'm into or want to get into. When I need to bend sheet metal like that , I found that I can drop by one of the companies in town that makes "ductwork " for houses, the A/C and Heating type , They have those big benders , and I will find the shop area and just ask someone in there if they can bend my metal for me !! They usually don't mind , and if they charge its really cheap ! I always offer to pay when I first ask if they can bend it , and they will say "Don't worry about it " I use your Idea also, sometimes !
I like the way you think. I've done similar on a few tasks I didn't have the tools for. I think the most I had to pay was $10 worth of beer to some tire shop workers.
great job!, i have one with a router table mounted on top, the drawers full of routrr bits , dovetail gij, hand held router and paperwork for all of it.
Do you know that it is difficult ??? shut my mouth ... and more difficult than that ??? my jaw pops out !!! and I thought I was going to do a bad job and look what I got ... very well done MASTER
Moe I swear I was up 1/2 the night last night looking at bottom roller boxes for my power tools. I'll be putting an alert on craigslist for these. Thanks bud!
Well done, sir. Creativity and skill are great traits to have (I imagine!). Just had the thought that if I found that in some yard sale years from now in it's next life, 1. I'd buy it. 2. I'd try to find some of that mat material they use on restaurant kitchen floors that's a kind of dense foam (probably other work areas too where folks stand a long time), and line the shelve bottoms with it. I think the constant clatter would get on my nerves. But that's me. Great project and well demonstrated. That coming from someone who did 4-H demonstrations at county fairs when I was a kid (and got blue ribbons to show!) Thanks for the video.
The extra drawer is Nice..Years ago I passed up on 2 huge 4 drawer filing cabinets ..That I could have built a desk between the two of them ..They were almost 2 1/2 feet deep
I have full size cabinets and 2 drawer smaller ones. I have skill saw hammers carpentry tools in 1 drawer . Peanut grinders files , metal working tools in another drawer . Rope , paracord, tape leather lace in another etc. etc . The drawers hold a lot of heavy stuff and slide in and out forever . Ain't as pretty as snap on box but works dam good for cheap . They are cheap at the thrift store .
I kept an old filing cabinet for the same reason but never got around to it. Mostly because I couldn't think of a good way to do it but I may try this. I like the trick on make metal drawers. I just wish I could get metal cheap or free.
I stopped by a furnace repair business a few years back and took home a couple junk furnace/AC shells. I got 2 huge 16or18gauge 5x6foot panels from commercial AC units and a ton of 20/22gauge panels from home furnaces. It took me an hour to cut it flat at home but it stacks nicely and takes up no room. I still think grabbing a second free file cabinet would yield pre-made drawers, hardware and a decent amount to spare sheet metal from the back/sides.
@@sixtyfiveford awesome I'll have to try that. Most of the metal I've picked up so far was from thrift stores but that's only bed railings which come in handy for welding projects but sheet metal isn't something you can pick up just anywhere. Lowe's does sell some smaller pieces but it's not cheap and it's to small for projects like this. Thanks again.
I don't normally use 'like a boss', but in this case the shoe fits. This is a good segway from the Jerry can mobile tool box as well. Just keep making things better. It's your way.
I have a cabinet like that, someone painted it forest green. I store all of my handheld power tools and their respective roto-molded cases in there. Mine had levelling feet, but I just replaced the threaded feet with threaded casters, nuts and washers. I like your idea though, looks more robust. I have two old conventional filing cabinets from the 1960s or 1970s and years ago Wal-Mart sold wheeled universal fit file cabinet bases that my Mom used with them, and I now use them too since acquiring them from her.
Hey 65. To continue with the cheap out, try and find some burlap. Some old grain sacks or something. They make excellent drawer liners so you don`t wear off the inside paint with the wrenches. I use 3M spray adhesive to glue them in. Only prob, if you get mice, they tend to go straight for the burlap. They love the stuff. Just sprinkle some peppermint oil on the burlap to help deter them.
You can pick up free stainless gas grills when the grill components burn out and turn them into great rolling power tool stands or rolling work stations.
More awesomeness! Great tips and ideas… My tip…don’t let your wife catch you watching these vids or you’ll never be able to buy anything brand NEW for the shop
I took a bunch out of my shop years ago as stuff kept getting lost in the bottoms/backs. I've missed the large, hold everything drawers and think I'll really enjoy this.
Glad that’s finally out and on the table! Red and black peeps, are the true shop colors. No one else has come out and actually said this beside me so kudos brother because I agree it’s true. Puke green, orange or white hahahahaha! Not sure what harbor freight was thinking about but I guess you have to please the masses. Maybe I’ll get the wife a white rolling chest for the kitchen🤪 Nice tip on scoring before bending too. Unless you happen to have a press or feel like making a brake out of angle iron this WILL save you so many headaches when bending. Overall this is yet another great idea rolling out of your shop so thank you for sharing. I’m surprised you didn’t top that with a nice piece of 1” ply and a few poly coats. I’ve done that to all of my rollers except the stackables and it gives a great protective layer to the top. Anyway, some food for thought😉.
I get that part brother, I was just goofing on the current color scheme choices is all. Personally my shop scheme is red n black. Pretty much any restoration I do for tools and such ends up with a new paint scheme of red and black. I just restored a 1950s craftsman wood lathe, I lost the industrial gray and brought it back to life with sunrise red and black speckle. The same with an old school Dayton 14 inch bandsaw I recently picked up on the Facebook marketplace for pennies on the dollar, again that was done strictly in a flat black. It’s all good as far as whatever color one chooses for their personal preference, that’s why we’re individuals😉 but for me the red and black just works. Enjoy the rest of your day ✌🏼🤟🏼🤞🏼
I see at the end of the video your floor jack...reminded me of how my jack isn't pumping properly like it needs to be reconditioned. Maybe you can do a video on that process? I love your channel!
Nice, I have always thought the same thing about using lateral files, this modification makes perfect sense! Now if they could just sound less tin-y when I'm clanking tools around in them. sounds deadening drawer liner etc.
I was debating this exact thing while filming. I bet a can of rubberized car undercoating sprayed on the underside would cure this or they sell tar/rubber sheets that have a sticky backing at the Home Depot. Car guys use it for sound deadening all the time.
@@sixtyfiveford I like the undercoating idea. You could probably do a similar trick with the locks as you did in your video about keying padlocks alike too.
If you wanted to dress it up a little bit. You could make a hard wood top and maybe handles for the sides to pull the cart. I would leave the bottom for case tools that take up shelf space. This was a good idea. There are certainly a lot of possibilities.
That's brilliant! , you always find a way to reuse something :-D Possibly get a cheap rubber car mat or similar and glue it in the top draw to stop the spanners sliding about, dampen the tinny sound as well :-) You might want to add 1 foot legs to bring it up to your height maybe :-) Add stickers and it's a wrap lol.
Oh men you made me do it saw an old file cabinet 2 of em and i was thinkinh of doing it but the drawers is too deep, so i did a little research and saw your, i have another project with way less money to spend thanks to you hahaha cheers 🫡
I would have just left those corner tabs and riveted or screwed the box together. I was a wood worker for a good majority of my life and honestly I would have probably just made it out of wood and painted it black if I didn't have a welder.

They're called "lateral filing cabinets" if you want to search for one. I have a bunch of 4ft long ones i got from an office that was being gutted. great storage.
Darn GREAT IDEA! 👍😎 And, if you don't want to Weld, use a Rivet Gun...🤔 I'd use the Bottom for Power Tool Storage such as Drills & Reciprocating Saws! Take care, 🤓 -Thomas Western Washington State
I've used my fair share of rivets. I did a huge aluminum storage box on the back of my motor home a few years ago with nothing but rivets. Turned out great.
I seen it. Man travels for. 24 hrs with family; and it didnt fall apart. Rivets are a real thing yall. Do it and use it. And he even makes it work.....pretty ya'll.
This is quite the coincidence. I just picked up 5 filing cabinets for free, to put in the garage to store a variety of things. Including tools!! Have a GREAT Day!!!
Some 2 drawer filing cabinets are heavier duty than some toolboxes. They make great stands for mitres, drill presses grinders ect. I’ve found you don’t need “identical” cabinets they’re all interchangeable inside once you pop the front drawer panel off.
They weld steel plates to the back side for counterweight from the factory. But yeah too much weight will still tip it and I may add some more weight at the back.
If you can locate an older legal paper sized, upright 3 drawer filing cabinet ...they are just the right size for storing / locking up those tools sets and power tools that come in plastic cases.
I've been planning an update video for a few years now. I did apply a little more oil to the side facing the sun this summer. I'll shoot for this spring.

Love your creativity, ambition and skill on these projects ! Thanks !
Hey Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
I hate seeing them go to waste, what a slick idea!
Hey Thanks.
THIS is why youtube was invented. New subscriber, and thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
great job!, i have one with a router table mounted on top, the drawers full of routrr bits , dovetail gij, hand held router and paperwork for all of it.
I like it!
Now ive got to go look for 1 or 2 of these and build my own rolling tool work chest.
Thanks bud!
That's awesome.
First time I’ve seen your channel, dam good idea, now I know what to do with the 4 drawer cabinet I’ve got. Thanks. Dave from Louisville
Thanks Dave, I'm glad you liked it. -Moe
Versatility. Mr. Vancouver Island says “ good job “ Mr. Texas.
That coming from someone who did 4-H demonstrations at county fairs when I was a kid (and got blue ribbons to show!)
Thanks for the video.
I found some 1/8in thick rubber matting that I threw into the bottom. Makes a big difference.
The extra drawer is Nice..Years ago I passed up on 2 huge 4 drawer filing cabinets ..That I could have built a desk between the two of them ..They were almost 2 1/2 feet deep
This one followed me home 5-6 years ago.
Awesome. Can't beat the price for storage.
Very cheap
I see them at savers all the time for $4.99
@@dirty2307 check your local Craigs list. Get them for free. I see them on the curb there alllll the time.
Thanks Mac, I'm glad you liked it. -Moe
Awesome
Very nicely done. you can get some scrap thick plate to bolt to back of it to stop the Tippies.
Great idea on the wheels. Subscribing.
Thanks. They actually have 1/8inch thick plate already welded to the back for counterweight. I may add some more though.
I think I have some burlap sacks hiding in the shed somewhere.
Great repurpose of a thing to a THING! Brilliant again.
I think it will come in handy.
Nice ! Love these free upcycle builds. Thanks for sharing !
Hey thanks.
My garage is fully stocked with free/found cabinets, dressers and desks. Been serving me real well for 20 years.
That's awesome.
Well done! I've had a couple of these just kickin around years. I now know what I'm going to do with them! So thank you. Fords Rule! Peace
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
That inside drawer is GREAT!
Thanks, I think it turned out well.
nothing wrong with that. excellent idea. looks and work great
Great idea as long as the now middle drawer isn't loaded so much that pulling the top one out doesn't cause it to tip onto you feet.
You can pick up free stainless gas grills when the grill components burn out and turn them into great rolling power tool stands or rolling work stations.
Not sure if you read your comments but a cool idea would be taking an old 5 drawer lateral into a tool box with a lockable hutch.
More awesomeness!
Great tips and ideas…
My tip…don’t let your wife catch you watching these vids or you’ll never be able to buy anything brand NEW for the shop
I love free filing cabinets I use the tall ones for toolkits and shop consumables
Maybe I’ll get the wife a white rolling chest for the kitchen🤪
Nice tip on scoring before bending too.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Snap on boxes are available in many different colors, Harbor Freight is just copying Snap on.
Enjoy the rest of your day ✌🏼🤟🏼🤞🏼
Genius. Thank you for sharing your skills knowledge and experience. I appreciate you
Now that's a wrench collection!
They just keep accumulating. I don't need or use them. They're all pre 1960's and I just don't have the heart to toss them out.
Great tip about the diamond blade
very cool, and nice corner weld
I see at the end of the video your floor jack...reminded me of how my jack isn't pumping properly like it needs to be reconditioned. Maybe you can do a video on that process? I love your channel!
I actually have a hydraulic jack on my work bench that I'm waiting to do a video on. It's all the same principals of a floor jack.
Great Job, I always see these thrown out
Some of them are built better and thicker than store bought toolboxes, some aren't.
If you wanted to dress it up a little bit. You could make a hard wood top and maybe handles for the sides to pull the cart. I would leave the bottom for case tools that take up shelf space. This was a good idea. There are certainly a lot of possibilities.
I think I will throw some wood on top.
That's brilliant! , you always find a way to reuse something :-D
Possibly get a cheap rubber car mat or similar and glue it in the top draw to stop the spanners sliding about, dampen the tinny sound as well :-)
You might want to add 1 foot legs to bring it up to your height maybe :-)
Add stickers and it's a wrap lol.
Thanks Mate.
Snap on stickers😂 looks good
I use filing cabs for everything. Tall, short, stick em on wheels and fill em up!
You can't beat the cost.
Oh men you made me do it saw an old file cabinet 2 of em and i was thinkinh of doing it but the drawers is too deep, so i did a little research and saw your, i have another project with way less money to spend thanks to you hahaha cheers 🫡
I love his projects! But I don't have a welder so I'm always looking at how to build them using alternative methods, fasteners, etc.
pop rivets
I would have just left those corner tabs and riveted or screwed the box together. I was a wood worker for a good majority of my life and honestly I would have probably just made it out of wood and painted it black if I didn't have a welder.
Yah me too. Its hard to keep up when you can't weld.
Good grief the amount of those i have seen in the skip at work isnt funny next time i see one i am building one for my shed the only issue i have is i dont have a welder so pop a is my friend, i am slowly going through ur back catalog of older vids some good stuff here love what u do !
Nice box, Good work.
Great build. Thank you for sharing your genius creativity 😉👍
Thanks for watching.
Great idea I am going to try and build one myself this spring
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
They're called "lateral filing cabinets" if you want to search for one. I have a bunch of 4ft long ones i got from an office that was being gutted. great storage.
A 4' one would be nice.
Awesome brain work 🥳 I love repurposed things. Thank you for your ideas
Hey Thanks.
Great work! Gonna start looking for some used cabinets now!!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Neat idea! Enjoyed this build.
Hey Thanks.
the endin' is great ! 🔨🔧⚒🛠
Once again...brilliant!
Darn GREAT IDEA! 👍😎
And, if you don't want to Weld, use a Rivet Gun...🤔
I'd use the Bottom for Power Tool Storage such as Drills & Reciprocating Saws!
Take care,
🤓 -Thomas

I've used my fair share of rivets. I did a huge aluminum storage box on the back of my motor home a few years ago with nothing but rivets. Turned out great.
What toolbox do u travel with?
I seen it. Man travels for. 24 hrs with family; and it didnt fall apart. Rivets are a real thing yall. Do it and use it.
And he even makes it work.....pretty ya'll.
Your right, it looks factory. That's a great idea for using up otherwise wasted space.
Hey Thanks.
This is quite the coincidence. I just picked up 5 filing cabinets for free, to put in the garage to store a variety of things. Including tools!!
Have a GREAT Day!!!
You can't beat the price.
Some 2 drawer filing cabinets are heavier duty than some toolboxes. They make great stands for mitres, drill presses grinders ect.
I’ve found you don’t need “identical” cabinets they’re all interchangeable inside once you pop the front drawer panel off.
I've come across some very stout filing cabinets.
Brilliant idea, well-executed.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Makes me want to get busy organizing but wondering how Ginger fits into the project???
Good build! 👍🏻
13:43 ill never turn one of these down agine. Thanks for the idea.
Legend has it this is how icon tool boxes are made
There is always some truth to legends.
Great tip. Speaking of tips. Looks like tipping might be a problem if the top drawer is loaded too heavy.
Good to know.
As always Great Workmanship and design!! Thanks for the idea! Liked !! Subbed !
Thanks. It's hard to beat the price for the storage you get.
Mo, you should do a video that's a revisit on that shed you build with the diesel/motor-oil wood treatment, now that it's been a few years?
I've been planning an update video for a few years now. I did apply a little more oil to the side facing the sun this summer. I'll shoot for this spring.
