      In UK, it is well worth investing a good jobsite saw (usually DeWalt but they may have let their corded version quality slide as they have with other corded tools) and set it up as a cabinet saw. The latest Evolution looks like a good budget product but I've been burned by their quality control a few times in the past

      By the time you build that table you've taken up the same space if not more space than a bigger hybrid or cabinet table saw, you aren't saving any space...just put a mobile base on the cabinet saw and roll it out of the way when you don't need it, that is what I do.

      In the UK get yourself an Axminster Workshop 216 saw. It has a cast iron top and much better motor and mechanics than any jobsite piece of plastic you can buy, it's so much better it doesn't even compare, and still relatively affordable.

    I would recommend a safety improvement to the crosscut sled. The blade comes though the fence and risks hitting something or someone as it does. I would add a block on the backside of the fence to bury the blade as it comes though the fence. It would also reinforce the fence at the curf.

      Just think about what you are buying and building in the case of this video, he built a table with outfeed support and end supports which now takes up as much space as a cabinet saw....so he hasn't saved himself any space at all by building that table LOL. The nice thing is, with the mobile base, you shove it into a corner, or if you are working in a garage, you can even roll it outside to give yourself more room...and you can still take the saw out of the table to use on a jobsite or other location if you wanted to.
      I have my hybrid table saw on a portable base, serves the same purpose for me, roll it against the wall of the shop when not in use, all my stationary power tools are on mobile bases now for that reason.

    To upgrade your fence, check out the BOW XT XTENDER FENCE. I went 46" on my Dewalt (DWE7491RS) Jobsite Saw and added the BOW XT feed supports. I only use them on the infeed side. I use a similar adjustable table for outfeed, so the feed supports get in the way. I also added the JessEm Clear Cut Flex Stock Guides (make sure you buy the "flex" version). Once I build something like what you built, it'll be an even greater setup and a serious upgrade from stock. By the time it's all said and done, the upgrades will be as much or more $$$ than I spent on the saw.
    *To save some cash, it wouldn't take much creativity to build something very similar to the BOW XT system out of plywood.

      I have the same Dewalt saw and added the same Xtender setup as you. The difference, in accuracy and safety, FAR exceeded my expectations. I can’t recommend the Xtender enough. I considered cobbling together a homemade setup, but realized that if the end result was a nuisance to use (installing it, removing it, or adjusting it) I’d end up not using it….I consider the cost to be well worth the functionality. 👍🏼👍🏼

      @mudz678 9 місяців тому +1

      @@MJLWoodWorks I did this prior to buying the Bow Xtender with the feed supports. It did improve the stock fence, as far as helping prevent left/right movement of the wood….particularly if a good portion of the fence extension was on the infeed side. BUT, it was fussy to use….it was awkward to clamp in place, awkward to adjust, and did not give any support to any wood that extended off the front or rear of the saw’s table. In addition, it did not provide an east way to attach downward-pressure feather boards. Putting the price of an item near the top of your pros/cons list, when said item provides a significant improvement in safety, accuracy, and ease of use, is a false economy.

    • @MJLWoodWorks
      @MJLWoodWorks 9 місяців тому

      @@mudz678 oh, I hear ya! Infeed can be a piece of melamine screwed to the aluminum. Two holes in the aluminum with table saw fence clamps could work.. believe me, if I had the money I’d be buying all sorts of cool gadgets… but the purpose of this series is budget tools for budget minded woodworkers so, I would think the fence system is a major luxury for most budget woodworkers..

    I made a $275.00 Dewalt contractor saw into a full cabinet saw. I made a work table that is 4’x8’. I stripped the contractor saw down by removing the fence and cut a hole in the work table about 6” from the edge. After dropping in the saw, I added a Besemyer fence. I then added my router lift, a vice and 2 cut outs for additional tools. I made elevator lifts for these openings where I put my planer and spindle/belt sander. I just raise them up when needed and they are lowered and completely out of the way when not needed. I basically have 3/4 of the my shop all wrapped up in one bench. It’s on 6 four inch locking casters so I can easily move it around the shop. Next I’m going to add an electric hand plain so I can use it like a jointer. This is probably the most useful thing that I will ever build.

      I'm in the process of doing something similar until yesterday. I put a straight edge on my table because an aftermarket zero clearance throat plate I purchased didn't fit... turns out the top is warped all over the place. Makes sense because I don't ususlly get consistent cuts on jointed snd planed boards. I Haven't put a feeler gauge on it but there's clear daylight with multiple straight edges. I guess Dewalt's tolerance for their stamped tops is 0.05".... seems pretty high. So I'm scratching the saw part of the workbench and in the market for a contractors saw. Thinking Laguna F1 but there are mixed reviews and II cannot decide.

    For an add-on fence, I think the Delta Model 36-Txxx is an excellent choice. I put one on my hand-me-down Craftsman saw and it made a world of difference. A few years ago, I bought an Incra fence system for my very used old Craftsman table saw. I built a solid stand, Integrated outfeed and side extensions, and an integrated router lift on the right side. It was a bit expensive but invaluable. I've since upgraded to a SawStop contractor saw and continue to use the Incra fence system. The SawStop fence is still in the box. It's supposed to be a good fence yet I cant see it being as accurate and versatile as the Incra.

    This is a great video that shows what can be done with budget tools and I wish I had seen it a few years earlier. It's probably because I don't know any better but the rack & pinion style adjuster on my DeWalt is the primary reason why I don't want to replace it with anything else. With the same blade you're using in the video, I get exceptionally precise cuts by simply putting at the measurement required. However, the fence itself does leave a small bit to be desired.

    This was the kick in the ass I needed. I've got two young ones, and have been trying to pick up woodworking as a hobby, and finding the time has always been my gripe. Watching this finally flipped the switch. Slowly, but surely, I wanted to make more or less this exact work piece for my table saw (Skil saw), I've cut my shitty southern yellow pine plywood from Lowe's, assembled all the goods, made adjustments along the way... It's not YET assembled, but just needs some screws (though I suspect my pocket holes for my side supports won't pan out - so there may be some adjustments needed).
    So, thank you so much.
    ALSO, to your question on a fence for a contractor saw... I have no idea. Someone mentioned Bora, but that doesn't replace your issue with the rack and pinion lack of micro-adjustments. John Heisz has a couple build videos on making his own fence - and while some look like they'd be a bit beyond me, I was like, "Holy shit, you know who could make a very approachable video to build your own fence? David f*ing Picciuto." John's videos are all incredibly informative, and I'm sure his plans are rock solid (he spares no details in his videos), but could be an opportunity to add to your budget shop and be something a lot of us novice woodworkers would try to replicate.
    If you made it this far, props. Thanks man! Ramble, over.

    Ever tried the WEN 10” blades on your table saw? I normally use Freud, but saw the WEN on amazon for $10. Not a bad blade at all for $10. Cuts are very smooth. Been using it for about four weeks now. It will be interesting to see if they maintain a smooth cut as long as a Freud

    Good video! As someone who lives in your neck of the woods, it’s nice to get inspiration from a local. You have truly come full circle with that sponsorship bit from the Guild.
    Side note - I won’t lie about your last point though, I personally can’t stand the rack and pinion fence systems that are so popular now because of what you talked about. It doesn’t matter if they are dewalt, Milwaukee, Rikon, skil, metabo, ect… I’ve seen the same issue across the board. Plus they always feel cheap (and I’ve had a few break)
    One huge upgrade to it though is to use the bow fence system. That thing is amazing in a small shop and gives it a lot more stability at the job site.

    For wheels and castors, try theatrical chandlers. The moment I heard the suggestion a few years ago, it made so much sense. Huge variety, lots of specification details... they have to be both good and specific for safety and rapid movement of heavy, unbalanced, or lightweight items often in the dark. Maybe slightly more expensive than Amazon but a more ethical purchase in terms of tax paid by the corporation and you can get exactly what you want, even call them for advice

    Thank you for going back to low budget!! You just used your extensive experience and skills to make simple boxes and create a superior upgrade to that saw. I've made a couple of saw stands and it never occurred to me to make an all-in-one that big . . . so that it could be an all-in-one. Of course I've only had a couple years so far. I built the stands then started adding, and it hasn't worked so well. You're doing well in doing good!

    Love it, I have done to tables so far. Afraid of moving on with this hobby, working with wood calms down my PTSD. The thing is, chemicals in my body left me shaking a bit more than I should. I’m trying to build in my garage, I have disassembled both tables, I think this one is perfect for my space and knowledge. Anyone that reads this has any ideas on how to lose this panic of building something refined for the first time?

    Maybe Melamine?

    Is there a way to do a custom top table saw deck?

    I had a quick look but could not find a follow up video for this. Did you have to make a larger cut out in the out feed box for the vacuum cleaner to fit when you make angled cuts? In the video you only had a small rectangular hole cut. Otherwise a great idea as I had bought a cheap table saw and was looking at a way to improve its performance.

    A really quick hack to improve the precision of the rack and pinion fence is to put a quick grip clamp on the dial, giving you much more leverage and control for those tiny adjustments. That tiny dial really is the weakest link in the chain, the one factor that can make the adjustments imprecise. You could also permanently attach something to make the dial bigger / add leverage, obviously the easiest way would be to drill a hole into the dial and screw in some kind of rod or dowel.

  • @MarcusBuer
    @MarcusBuer 9 місяців тому

    About the fence adjustment, you can probably 3D print a second dial for precision, that gears into this dial's gear but has a higher ratio.

    To tackle the fence problem on my old bosch I used extruded aluminium and a Incra positioner. With a aluminum fence. Cost where about 150 for the aluminum and t bolts and the cost for a positioner. But man was it better. I now use the positioner and the incra fence i bought later on my 47 delta unisaw. The small jobsite just lacked in power for the thicker and harderwoods.

    I have the identical saw in a Metabo brand. I built a table for it, ditched the original fence, and mounted a Delta T2 fence to the front of the table and it worked wonders for me. Was about $200 when I bought it. May be like 300 now. Honestly for the cost of the saw and the fence together I should have bought a delta table saw and been done with it.

    Planning something very similar that I'm going to start in a couple months, but going even farther down the rabbit hole. Rather than enclosing the crappy table saw inside or/surrounded by cabinets, I am taking the guts out of the saw and mounting it directly into the narrow end of a 4x8 rolling workbench. A few reasons for going that route: First, it lets me eliminate all of the wonky saw characteristics (plastic box, undersize miter slots, shit biscuit fence, etc.). Second, I can use a Delta T3 fence setup which eliminates your fence issue. Third, I get can get some nice infeed real estate by pushing the saw back into the table a bit (will require some controls extension). And finally, I can fashion a dust collectoion box much easier (and smaller) without the original plastic cabinet in the way. The saw part of a table saw is not much more than a skillsaw without the handle, so pretty easy to re-mount it into a nice big cabinet like you see in cabinet shops all the time.
    4x8 will include table saw, router lift, pivoting compound miter saw, a clamp/assembly area and onboard dust collection for all of it.

    Love the video! Only issue I see is the cutout for the shopvac is going to get in the way if you tilt the blade below 90 degrees for a miter/bevel cut. On these type of saws the whole dust port swings with the motor when tilting the blade. Otherwise love the setup!
