I’ve got a NV3500 and it tows really well. I don’t like the transmission technology. Tow haul basically does nothing. I manually downshift down hill and under deceleration. I’ve noticed that going uphill it won’t hold cruise control. Even a light trailer with no power issue at all as soon as I start climbing a hill cruise shuts off. Really irritating over long distance towing. I love the van and if they could solve those issues it would be perfect.

I've been tire kicking trucks for the past year as I have been looking for one to replace my aging 2007 Silverado. Without getting into details, I will not buy another GM Product again due to the less than stellar experience I have had with this truck and a Tahoe so I have been looking at the Ford F150, Toyota Tundra, Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan. Based on the reviews I have seen the Nissan Titan is a hidden gem and the XD appears to be a very good vehicle, even better the used ones that are 1-2 years old are very affordable.

I towed a 35 foot loaded 5th wheel with 4 pop outs from the Canadian border to Sacramento down I-5 with my 2017. The trailer was an older model and I must tell you it was heavy. It linked up to the Curt 5 wheel hitch built for the truck. The hitch drops into factory gooseneck hole and locks into the factory puck mounts and was rated at 16000 lbs capacity. If you know I-5 the passes in southern Oregon and Northern California drop heavy Commercial rigs down to 30 to creep up the grades. My Cummins Titan held the speed limit and didn’t even move the temp needle in the engine or trans. What was also surprising is it’s unloaded comfortable ride but that ride continued regardless of the trailer out back and minimal squat. I am just now on my 3 set of tires at 80,000 miles. Thought it might be time for brakes but the mechanic said they are still good at 50%. Now it’s not doing that kind of work everyday of its 80K but it’s not showing it’s age!

Just made it more expensive to register in most states. Half tons are 8000 and under in majority of states, above that is commercial fee territory. Example, here in IL, that truck would need D plates, and an annual safety inspection, so $288 a year. A typical half ton, 8000 and less is $151 a year. Is it really worth that extra fee cost of 1700 pounds of payload? There are half tons with nearly 3000 pounds of payload with under 8000 GVWR. Better off getting a 1 ton and be done with those fees.

    • @acdii

it's technically a 3/4 ton truck so it has to tow better, mass up front equals more stable towing out back, but 1708 payload is half ton payload, so don't even think about 5th wheels, most 1/2 ton towables start out at 1500 pounds pin DRY. If I am going to pay for 8,001 and up registration fees, the 1 ton is the way to go.

The old 7 speed has the exact opposite issue, it downshifts and engine brakes on every lift of the throttle. I have commented here that I refer to the trans as "my reluctant partner in crime" for its behavior unloaded, and now with nearly 40k miles on it in just over a year and a half, I will say that I haven't been annoyed by it, It's something that I gotten used to.
Like Mr. Truck, I wish they had hone full 3/4 ton with it. If you climb under it and look around, It's as if that is what they were going to do, and at the last second, changed their minds, It is completely overbuilt for the GVWR- which isn't a bad thing, just a bit of a missed opportunity.
My truck weighs in at 6788 with me, usual tools and a full tank. Empty (ish) mpg's have averaged right around 15 in mixed driving, although I do have a light foot. Get too crazy with the loud pedal, and single digits WILL happen. Towing MPG for me has averaged about 12. My trailer is a 16x8.5x7.5 enclosed, which weighs right at 6800lbs (basically a shop on wheels). Keep in mind that I live in TX, so not a lot of hills here, and I generally tow at 65, so your results may vary.

You guys must have not ever towed really heavy with a true half ton. I had a f150 max tow ecboost. Was rated at 11,300 pounds. Towed my 7000 pound travel trailer with it and was scared to death. It was so unstable. Now I have a 2018 XD with the Cummins and towing the same travel trailer it is unbelievable how much difference in towing with the XD. The XD in my opinion is for true half ton people that want much more stability towing. Ford is screwing up by making the trucks lighter to increase the towing numbers. I actually had a 2017 f250 king ranch as well with the 6.2. I was a diehard ford fan. Still like them but you will call me crazy but I could never get that truck to be stable either. My XD is heavier than my old 17 f250. Now I will say this also had a 2011 f250 with the 6.7 and that truck was a beast. Was extremely stable why.... because it was heavy. A heavier vehicle will always be more stable

You have to love just how good that v8 sounds. Sadly, it makes me wonder just how long it will be around since the XD has already been discontinued for Canada. Offering it in a single platinum trim level is also risky considering that it is only available to a very small segment of the truck buying market at that price point. If Nissan thinks that circulating press vehicles is all the marketing they need to do, then they will be in for a surprise as nobody really knows what the XD is all about.

1708 pound payload on a 3/4 ton rated truck is why. Nothing to do with bias, has everything to do with how they classed the XD and the minimal payload for it. Big deal, has a 5th wheel mount, drop my 5th wheel on it and it will sit on the axles with a 2463 pound pin. it would be very hard to find a 5th wheel trailer that it can tow with that tiny payload.

I’ve towed with my personal truck in the mountains (2012 tundra) and the trucks my company uses for work (2019-2020 silverado’s), and I’ve found the grade braking to work exactly as intended on both. You usually have to press the brake pedal once or twice initially going down the grade to get the grade braking to active. Once you do that, it usually works fine, if you’re in tow haul mode. Wonder why TFL has issues with grade braking on the trucks they test.

You know, in Illinois, and many other states, 1/2 ton trucks are 8,000 pounds and under. With this one being 8650 GVWR, it would have to be D plated (8001-12,000), AND have to be safety inspected. Might as well go to a real 3/4 ton if that's the case. Curb weight 6942. Have to admit I’m not a Nissan guy. Had a couple when younger. This is not a half ton but those who have to buy foreign it’s a decent choice. Someone commented about being happy it doesn’t have turbos. I gotta say coming from a V8 to a 6 colder turbo a few years ago I love my “quiet” v6. No drone when pulling a trailer for hundreds of miles. On the good side the.Nissan doesn’t have to pay some additional taxes where I’m from because it’s over a certain weight. Negative- no EPA.
What I didn’t like about the test is that we now use manual modes to keep the truck slowed down and yet just a short couple years ago we made the trucks use tow haul. Ya, my 6 cylinder suffered from those tests but I regularly use the manual mode on king downhills and speed isn’t a factor as a result.
Decent test, but with millions more Fords, GMs, Rams built I’ll keep mine, thanks.
