Fantastic video as always 👍🏻 I'm blown away on how close the trucks were! It really shows how choked the Diesels are with emissions and how far gasser have come over the years! With brand new trucks it's getting hard to talk myself into going diesel when the gas engines can hold their own...

I have a 2016 XD platinum reserve with the cummins. Its got 120,000 miles on it now and has not been babied. I went in open minded because I didnt need max towing bragging right but regularly pull a 26ft enclosed car hauler loaded to around 11,000lbs. I have to say, its built to cruise towing and it does that with a better ride and more stable than most other trucks. The Cummins has been problem free. I am religious about fluid, filter changes , pm maintenance and I think that does help. The transmission is massive and stays cool, no chatter, no stutter... and yes it does shift with a purpose, feels like some of the big rig automatics when it shifts but I expected that considering its beefiness. It has a few interior niggles but the seats make me happy, its just a nice place to cruise. Im curious how far this thing will go with the Cummins. So far Ill give it a 7 out of 10. Its not perfect but for what I use it for, it works well. Fuel mileage is not its selling point, at 65 max loaded it will do 10-13 mpg, and down to around 8 over 70. Smallish fuel tank can be swapped with an inframe aftermarket upgrade or a bed tank. But... if you find one cheap, buy it.

I stumbled upon this comparo and it caught my eye as I tow with a larger gas (496c.i.) Chevy. I know from my many years of towing that the differences can be surprising when comparing the two engine types. Obviously the diesel goes about its business at lower rpm and may hang in a gear longer without the need for a downshift but for actual performance numbers and fuel economy the two can be pretty close. In today's world of turbo diesels it's common for most to give the nod in this regard to the diesel but I know from experience that gas does well too. Economy improves for the diesel when lightly loaded whereas the gas remains much the same.

Pondr Fords transmissions are the most underrated on the market. At the shop I worked at we NEVER had a ford tranny repair going back to the 6.0. Tons of other repairs, but not transmission. Allison gets a lot of pub, but the 6-speeds paired to the 6.7 are bulletproof. Now the 10-speeds..... ummm we shall see. Other thing we saw were people chewing up rear ends. Would hot shot without getting a 4.10 and sometimes eat up the 3.73 on the dually.

Great video. There's no way Fred Diaz is managing this truck. The Diesel simply doesn't perform the way anyone wishes it would. I think this platform has all the potential in the world but Nissan has to realize that potential buyers will always opt for more capabilities at this price point. I've been cross shopping for weeks but the math vs capability vs price vs fuel economy hurts the XD. Honestly they need to dramatically change the programming of the diesel and lower the price by at least $4500 and perhaps they'll have a winning formula. Help me Nissan to justify getting a new XD!!!

Fred Diaz revolutionized the RAM brand. How could the gas out tow the diesel?

  • @georgelee7282
    @georgelee7282 7 років тому +9

It seems like the Diesel is geared like a gas engine. I think it needs a taller axle so it can hit a higher speed in lower gears with more multiplication. The trans tuning in both seemed crappy. I hate how the trucks hunt up and down when you are flat to the floor towing in D. I wish you guys would tow with the manual trans shifting to keep the rpms and the speed. I doubt very highly holding redline all the way up would cause any strain at all the way engines are engineered now. I have found towing with my 11 F150 5.0 and 13 F250 6.2 if I leave it in a lower gear going up hill towing I could actually back out of the throttle instead of being at full and having it in a higher gear. That would lead me to believe more fuel would be being used in D rather than M.

I get the attributes of both engines but it clearly shows how much gas power plants have evolved. I'd go with the 5.6. Not because it's faster but because all you need to do with it in this situation is give it synthetic oil changes as your routine maintenance. It did the same thing the Cummins did. Rev it, run it, idle it etc. gas engines are basically maintenance free.
The only reason to buy a Cummins XD is for the diesel experience and powerband. There's not much this 7000# plus behemoth offers otherwise. You can get a true HD Ford/GM/Ram at a similar price with far more capacity in the same weight class.

Holy Dunkin Donuts, Batman! Real dough-nuts! But, good to see a real comparison between models. I am not surprised by the mpg results, as both trucks seem to be driven at max rpm for max loads. Myself, am not concerned about high speed when towing. Rather, I drive at "optimum" rpm for the motor and tranny, and use the optimum gear. Thus, I would be MUCH more interested in seeing Kent operate the diesel at say 2300 rpm, which appears to be the optimum rpm for the motor, and then see the results for time and mpg. Same for the gasser, tho likely it would indeed need say 5000 rpm to produce optimum. For such, I would expect the gasser to be quicker, but consume way more fuel. As a viewer noted below, the real issue for diesel is the rpm versus the towing abilities. If the Titan diesel can tow 10k# at say 50 mph up the Ike, at say 2300 rpm, this would be useful info for buyers imho. At 2300 rpm, the wear on the motor would be far far less than say 5000 rpm for the gasser, and this would be a prime reason for buying the diesel. $56k is not cheap and parts are very expensive; but if the diesel can outlast the gasser, the price might be worthwhile. But, such a pity Cummins did not engineer the diesel with an engine brake!

Thanks guys for videos like this. I’ve now owned a 2002, 2005, and 2012 Cummins, a 2015 ecoboost, and. 2018 Yukon Denali. I finally feel comfortable saying that I’m never going back to diesel unless I buy a 5th wheel or use it for HEAVY work. Gas engines have progressed DRAMATICALLY lately, and for those people keeping their vehicles less than 10 years it makes no sense to pay the diesel premium anymore. The campers we buy usually weigh between 4-7k Lbs and my last two gassers have performed admirably.

Previously you towed a gooseneck trailer weighing 10,200 pounds in 8:44. Do you think the drag from the trailer made that much of a difference?I would like to see you test both of these trucks using the exact same 9,000 pound trailer that was used with the other 1/2 trucks in the Ike Gauntlet so that we can have a fair comparison between these and the previous runs. The mashups are interesting but it is more valuable to have an even comparison.

So, today, we learn that horsepower matters after all! What's more surprising is that the diesel engine doesn't get that much better fuel economy doing this pull. The grade of gasoline required isn't specified, but in the East of the U.S., regular gas is significantly cheaper than diesel; so the slight fuel economy advantage of the diesel is more than eaten up by the higher price of the fuel.
I'm not sure there's really a case for the diesel in this application, unless the apparent extra noise of the gas engine spinning at higher rpm bothers you. And, for someone pulling a travel trailer close to the diesel's maximum rated tow capacity, its 1450 lbs. payload is a big problem. Lots of travel trailers have tongue weights 700-1,000 lbs. which leaves very little extra capacity for carrying people and stuff in the truck.

  • @Began2011

After owning a F150 5.0 and ecoboost engine, I think I understand why engines with a higher torque at a lower rpm can get out towed by a higher revving V8 gas. I think it's because, at the diesels (or ecoboost) sweet spot of 2000-3000 rpm, it has to run a higher gear to maintain highway speeds. A V8 gas can rev twice that high, therefore it can use a lower gear and maintain highway speeds, while getting an extra mechanical advantage out of the transmission, transmitting more torque to the wheels.

Normally I wouldn't even look at Japanese pickups, but $16k off the factory sticker and a few minutes of extra time got my attention when I arrived at a lunch gathering 15 minutes early. So I went across the street to check out the Titan XD. Later, I went back and test drove a Platinum Reserve with the Cummins. My first impression is that it felt like driving a 3/4 ton more than it did a half ton. Which I could live with. But the more I looked at it, the less I liked it. Here is a list of the short comings...7 inch screen is too small. The big three have nothing smaller than 8 inch. No digital speedometer. I own four vehicles and every one has one and I'm used to them. No full-time 4WD. GM has had them for 20 years now on the half ton and the HD series gets it in 2020. Having had it for 18 years in Alaska, I don't want to be without it. No limited slip differential. Again, needed for Alaska. The e-locker on the Pro4X is for off-road use and not suited for highway driving. No power fold mirrors. I have single-width garage doors, so I need them. But what really tipped me against the XD are two TFL videos I watched. One was the 98 mile loop with a Cummins and a 5.6 gasser. The difference in fuel consumption was minimal. I expected the Cummins to do much better than it did, especially when it was towing a load. The other video was the Ike Gauntlet. Again, I expected the Cummis to do much better than the gasser, but it was actually slower and used almost as much fuel. Since I expect to tow no more than 7500 to 8000 pounds, a gasser looks to be the better choice. So I'm trading in my Silverado 1500 for a Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 engine and the max tow package. I'll wait for the 2020 model in the hopes that tow mirrors will available.

mine has been in the shop for the AC 3 times. New drivers seat. Head gasket, turbo..and a few other things i cannot remember right now. The fuel filters are expensive. The oil changes are expensive. The fuel mileage is about 13 ( i have a leveling kit with 33" tires.) My 2017 super duty had no problems. 17 mpg (4" lift with 37s) power isn't even comparable. Interior is much nicer with cooled and heated seats. Locking hubs and locking rear dif. shift on the fly. All things that make a truck heavy duty is on the super duty...Not the titan. I know that the titan is not supposed to be a 3/4 ton...,.OK then why price it like one? thats why Titan XD cummins is going away...My opinion

Simply ridiculous, nobody who buys a truck will worry about consumption. If you are worried about consumption for that you have to go and buy a hybrid of ladies. A towing job will do the same in a Titan XD as in a GM truck or any other brand. if you have to transport a container or some heavy object you will do it in the same way in any truck you choose, a difference of 2k or 3k pounds will not affect anything ..

As an Automotive Auctioneer, I have to say those Titan XDs and to a lesser extent, the Titans are not vehicles that are highly coveted. Tundras and others attract all the bidders. However, as I am a person who has no brand loyalty, seeing as I am paying the maker and not the other way around, I say I like these vehicles. Tundra has relished the best reliability of any other pickup, but I would not buy a truck with a 5.5 ft bed or not buy without crew cab. XD is not an aesthetically pleasing truck, but Love the utilitarian nature of it. Chevy and Ford are solid, and Love RAM for looks (minus tranny issues). For someone who tows and loads somewhat often, I would like a truck that can tow as a core competency per SAE ratings. I need the space for family, hunting, camping, and going out to the range, but I don't want to spend money on a diesel and its related higher costs as compared to gas (many companies' fleets moving away from diesel). I would say this vehicle has its merit in XD gas form. Wish they made the higher end trims in 6 seater configuration.
