    What I do like about the Titan over the Ford is that the Nissan has a 5 year 100k mile warranty.... bumper to bumper. 🤙🏼

      Now thats a good deal.
      I choose ford because they have proven themselves to me.
      I feel as though they are better engineered and even the towing and tongue weights are higher than that of chevy and dodge.
      Tell Toyota theyre on my watch list and tell Nissan that both they and Toyota and Honda all three need to make 1 ton trucks

      The Titan XD handles the trailer. The opposite is true for the F150, trailer handles the F150. I owned many F150s and now I have a 2019 XD and love it

    Manufactures are pushing half tons to their capability. This video proves that their towing limitations are over rated. Why push a vehicle to or beyond its max. Keep it under rated in its safe zone. Designed, engineered, tested and assembled right here in North America. Great job Nissan.

      From a Japanese company that gets free land, tax abatement, etc. I suppose you think their profits don't go back to Tokyo? Yeahhh...great job. You built your junk here for free.

      So add a moon roof, a tool box, a tailgate step, and a passenger, and call it 8500 lbs max tow. We're in the twilight zone when making the truck lighter increases tow rating.

  • @saltygringo
    @saltygringo 6 років тому +121

    This video proved what Nissan has been saying all along, that they built the XD to be a much more stable towing platform even if 1/2 tons can boast equal/higher tow ratings.

    • @jamesavery6671
      @jamesavery6671 6 років тому +1

      The nissan is still a light weight truck compared to a 2500 and 3500. Neither of these trucks pulled this very well

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 років тому +13

      James Avery how do you figure? I’m sure a traditional 3/4 ton would be more composed, but Ken and Andre had nothing but praise in this video for how the Titan XD handled that 11k load.

    • @saltygringo
      @saltygringo 6 років тому +3

      James Avery yeah you're right. But Nissan didn't call it a HAD truck, then there's the fact that it costs as much as one. If I was towing a lot, and regularly, I'd buy a 2500/250.

    • @jamesavery6671
      @jamesavery6671 6 років тому +4

      The engine was struggling bad in the nissan though. While it was more composed than the ford it's still not quite up to a 2500 weight truck. Bigger is better for pulling........ at least up to the point of practicality and what you can afford. Just plain safer.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 років тому +7

      James Avery well sure a 3/4 ton would likely be a bit better (though still debatable if it also had a gasser under the hood), but the Titan did fine. Just because the engine was revving out, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s struggling. I tow with my puny 2.7 Tacoma, and on grades like this I have to rev it like they did. It’s temperatures hold up just fine and I always have more speed in it if I wanted. So while it might not have been pleasurable to listen to the noises, or was as “effortless” as the Ford, it likely wasn’t too stressed at all.

      Mathew Watkins what’s the weight and length of your travel trailer? This is the dilemma I have, 3.5L Ecoboost or Titan XD? I’m looking at upgrading to a travel trailer with as much as 8 to 8.5k loaded and 33 ft long. Ecoboost has capacities and power, but concerned about its weight. Thanks for any tips from anyone!

      @SPPTA 4 роки тому +4

      drums4phun XD, simply for the reliability, frame and the suspension for that trailer of yours. Eventhough that eco is a rocket ship, it lacks the supporting components for towing. Towing occasionally it’s a tossup but towing 8K plus regularly??? XD all the way.

      drums4phun : I own a 2017 titan xd crew cab with the diesel. I own a 32ft travel trailer. The younger weight is abnormally heavy at 834lb tongue weight. Trailer is about 7000 lbs dry with my water tanks full and all my gear plus a 400 pound four wheels in the bed I’m about total weight around 8000 lbs I can honestly say that my titan feels stable. No white knuckle driving. Plenty of power to spare but that is an advantage to diesel. Suspension feels safe and handles it well. Hope this helps

    • @slowspecv69
      @slowspecv69 3 роки тому

      drums4phun I’d go with a titan xd diesel, we tow a keystone bullet 330bhs 7400 dry with a 2017 Nissan Armada 5.6. Definitely stable, just wish it had a little more torque like the diesel, and the titan diesel will weigh more then the armada so it’ll be even more stable then an armada.

    Gas Titan XD is the similar concept Ford did with the 1999 F250 on th F150 body. Basically was an F150 with the HD chassis, suspension and cooling. Chevy did the same with the 1500HD, although, the towing capacity for both trucks was not as desirable as the trucks today.

  • @ohioguy4326

    It's not all about speed when towing, the F150 will beat a Kenworth up the hill but does that mean it tows better then a Kenworth? I don't think so.

    • @BlueDually4x4
      @BlueDually4x4 6 років тому +3

      Not true, as I pass pickup trucks all the time going up grades in the KW at work with as much as 20k on the trailer. So its really a stupid comparison to pit a full size 18 wheeler against a half ton.

    • @holeefuk5010
      @holeefuk5010 6 років тому +6

    • @ohioguy4326
      @ohioguy4326 6 років тому +18

      It means that the better towing vehicle is not necessarily the fastest. It's a combination of stability, comfort, confidence, and power.

    • @ohioguy4326
      @ohioguy4326 6 років тому +10

      Just because you pass a pickup does not mean you are faster lol. Most people don't run there pickups with their foot to the floor going up a grade.

      In other words "3/4 ton" & "1/2 ton" is now meaningless. The Nissan a is a close match to my 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the 6.0L and TFL says the Nissan is just a bit more than a half ton, not quite 3/4 ton.

    Another awesome video, guys! The F150 seems like a great truck. I've traveled I-70 a million times, and your "Ike Gauntlet" section is brutal even without a trailer. Being from NJ, the loss of power up in Colorado vs. being home is *extremely noticeable* so honestly if I had to tow 11k LBS on the Ike, I'd want nothing other then a turbo diesel, proper gearing and amazing brakes.

    My suggestion, don't tow anything more than 3/4 of rated towing capacity with a half ton. The F150 specifically is not a fun truck to tow with....soft suspension, and light weight body make it more like an suv to tow with. I am a Ford guy, but didn't want to go back to a Super Duty because they suck to drive daily. I bout a Titan XD with the 5/6, and I love it. I know I can tag a 9k lb 5th wheel on it, and be fine. 1600lb king pin limit, 2300lb payload, and drives like a half ton, tows like a 3/4 ton.

    I've owned my 2018 King Ranch for three weeks and just towed with it for the first time last week. 2 hour trip through the Smoky Mountains with a 6,000lb camper. The F-150 handled it great, super comfortable ride, blind spot monitor extends to the end of a camper, and I had very few brake events over a 3 mile 6% down hill. I thought the engine did a terrific job. I will agree though, that it had a little more bounce than I expected, but nothing crazy.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 років тому +2

      ckeegan003 I think if that is your typical trailer weight, you made a perfect choice. People often forget to include payload when towing and while some might say a 6k trailer is very light, if you have passengers or 1000lbs of cargo in the bed while you’re making those trips, it very much starts to push the limits like a much heavier trailer would by itself. Glad you are happy with your truck though. If it meets your needs and you are content, that’s really all that matters.

But then I would go with the diesel in the xd. That would be the real test for this load. The XD with diesel vs the 250 are what buyers who are towing that amount would look at

    Great test; would love to see you test an F150 with the heavy duty payload package to make the comparison a bit more equal to the Titan XD. The 1/2 tons may have the power, but your test shows that the overall stability of towing a heavy trailer goes beyond the engine. Go for a 3/4 or 1 ton for heavy towing - especially in the mountains. Keep up the great tests.

      to reduce emissions, they added several emission components and those are weak points. Also diesel needs to work hard, drive long distances to burn off the soot from the emission components. If someone drives it short distances or without heavy loads, it simply will not be reliable.

    The F150 in the video did not have the optional heavy duty payload package. I wonder how that would effect the feel. Also, I wonder how a set of rear air bags on the F150 would change the feel. I do not like the Titan but in this case it did seem more composed with this much weight.

    1.) Why is one a crew cab, and another an extended? That DOES affect the towing capacity, and cabin noise.
    2.) Why is the F150 tested as a $60k package and the Titan is only at $46k?
    Everyone is pointing out the chassis as being an unfair advantage for the Titan.. but my issue lies in the fact that that it is a $14k difference in packages..

    Most people will spend very little time if any trailering up a grade this steep. The Titan will handle the load much more comfortably on an every day bases. If it takes an extra minute to get up the grade when I make the one trip up this grade next year so what, it still handles the load much better.

    "What do you do when you have to tow 11000 lbs?" ....You get a diesel 3/4 ton if you have to do it more than a couple times. Sure these trucks did the big pull; so would my 5.4L 3v. But if you tow this kind of weight regularly, a diesel is a MUST. Better economy, superior torque, and will last longer doing this work. Good review guys; good comparison.

    I understand you have to test what the mfg sends you. Ford did not send you a truck for an apples to apples test. They should have sent a F150 3.5 with max tow and max payload pkg with the 6.5" bed. (seven lug wheels) They have heavier springs LT tires and 3.73 ratio.
    I would like to see a HD F150 3.5 (Max Payload and Max Tow) vs. the Nissan HD with the Cummins 5.0. and a F250 6.7 diesel vs. the Nissan Cummins 5.0
    I have a 13 F150 3.5 6.5' bed and max tow. Timbren Load Boosters and Monroe Load Sping Shocks. Sometimes it seems like it can tow more that it has truck to be able to control the load. Personally I think the mfg are getting into dangerous territory with some of these tow ratings! To me the extra 12" in the wheel base matters! And the weight of the truck!
    My next truck will be another f150 3.5 6.5' bed max tow. Or f250 6.7 but a little more truck than I need. But the Nissan XD 5.0 Cummins might be more what I need. But afraid of the resale of the Nissan.

      The Nissan had a V8 going up against the F-150 with the Eco boost 6 cylinder. Ford has several options in the 6 cylinder and V8 for the F-150. They could have used the 6 cylinder Nissan against the 6 cylinder Ford or the V8 Ford against the V8 Nissan for a better comparison. So if u feel that Nissan did better with an outmatched frame and motor than the Ford they used, than ur not a very smart truck consumer. If u put that Nissan against my F-250 diesel, I’d drag it up and down the road while pulling that trailer.

      Ford sent the best F150 available. Yes it is faster but it is to light to tow that load safely. It cost way more and you could add aftermarket parts to make it safer but then you would be close to 60,000 dollars to do what that 45,000 dollar Nissan just did. They both averaged 3 mpg towing that load and the EcoBoost is supposed to be the fuel efficient engine. I still say why put two turbos on a V6 just to make it do the job that a V8 is designed to do?

Really nice truck, and tows my 28' travel trailer SO much better than my previous Titan. Longer wheelbase, heavier frame, bigger brakes and rear axle contributing to much higher payload capacity just makes this machine a better 1/2 ton towing platform, but it still drives comfortably unloaded. Twin turbos cranking out super torque? Nope, but a really stable (read safer) towing platform. I love the truck. Thanks TFLT, this video helped to convince me! BTW, find one a year or two old with very low mileage and save 1/3 the cost. Just sayin'.

Fords towing quality went way down when they switched to load range C tires. That said I had to air the rear tires up to almost max rated pressure, when I did the towing experience was much better. In full disclosure I do not own have have never own any brand (Nissan, Ford, Toyota, Ram, GM, etc.) of pickup truck. I am in the market and have been doing research for a while. It is clear that there are major issues with the Titan XD. In reading forums and the Titan XD Facebook sites there are really horrible issues with both the gas and diesel Titan XD. I really like what the XD has to offer but utterly scared from even going anywhere close to purchasing one based on the stories I hear. These stories are often unresolved by the Dealer or the Dealer is often buying back the truck. You all should make note of this sometime in your reviews. I do not see these sort of things with the Ford, Ram, GM sources.

      True, but Hyundai eventually improved their quality, now they make pretty nice cars. Nissan fanboys brag the slower titan won because it has a better ride when towing. Ford fanboys don't care because their trucks have more power, better mileage and comfortable ride.

    Ok all you Nissan and Ford fans. I have BOTH of these trucks. And yes, they are both great but......The Titan out performs the Ford when towing. I tow a 36' 5th wheel and the Titan feels rock solid and St times its easy to forget the trailer is even behind it . The Ford has plenty of power but, you can feel the trailer and, it's a two handed , hang on for your life. The Titan weighs in at 8,245. lbs and the Ford weighs in at 5,687. The Titan just feels better, rides smoother and brakes better. Love the Ford but I wonder how it will be with 100,000. miles . Yes, I keep trucks up to 150,000. miles. Side note....sold my 2010 Tundra and bought the Titan. Paid 41,000 for the tundra sr5. Towed a 5th wheel with it. Tons of power....average mpg 6! Sold it with 169,000. miles on the odometer. The ONLY issue I ever had was a 1 burnt out tail light! When I traded it in I owned it. Nissan gave me $26,000. . I hope the Ford and the Nissan can perform as long as the Toyota did with no issues. One last thing...The Toyota sold the same day I traded it. Sold for $31,000.!!! The guy who bought it loves it. Good luck.

    Last year, I was shopping for a new 3/4 ton truck and I test drove many trucks from Ford, Chevy, Ram and Nissan. None of the Nissan Titan XDs, neither the gas nor the diesel version, had a payload capacity of 2590 lbs as stated in this video. All of the payload stickers in the door jam were below 2000 lbs. The diesel version XD was, sadly, around 1500 lbs. My previous truck, a 2010 Titan 1/2 ton, was better than that at 1900 lbs.

    Ok, I have a 2017 Nissan Titan Platinum Reserve 2WD (lighter so a little bit higher capacity), this is actually a practical test best my family owns a winery and we need to tow bulk wine in those cubes. We are thinking about a 16-20ft flatbed open trainer, deck over the axels. In total it would weight about 9,000lbs (including trailer). It wouldn’t be towed very often with that amount of weight. Possibly 1-2 times a year loaded like that, otherwise just a useful trailer. Would this be alright?

    It's these guys' job to illustrate & dramatize every last detail. Yeah, the bigger and heavier truck will be more stable with weight on the back (no sh*t). The fact remains the smaller & lighter truck with an engine nearly half the size makes an ass out of that big V8.
    So many people either can't or refuse to come to terms with the fact a little V6 beats all the V8s. And yes, I'm sure it outpulls the 5.0 as well.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 років тому

      Daniel Heller sure the Ecoboost was far and away the superior engine up the hill, but you also have to consider that truck owners on average own their vehicles for much longer than car or SUVs. While the EB seems to be just as reliable as everything else on the market so far, nothing lasts forever. And when something does go wrong, will the additional complexity of the twin turbo setup prove to be financially problematic to its owner versus a more traditional and simple NA V8? I’m not sure really, but I know if it were my money, and I absolutely didn’t need that extra performance, I’d probably go with the V8.

      Nissan TitanWarrior if you are going to tow heavy often you would be way better off to buy a Ford Super Duty, Chevy or Ram 2500. Stay away from light duty 1500s. Normal everyday stuff go with the F-150 for the fast fun factor.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 років тому

      Patrick OHarold really depends on a few factors. That particular trailer, yes I might seriously consider a 3/4 ton if it was a regular occurrence. A 11k flatbed type trailer, and I might be more okay with something like the XD. Something in the 8-9k range and I’d likely start considering leaning more towards a traditional 1/2 ton. But so many factors go into towing that it’s very difficult to choose one “best”. Great test by the TFL team though. I was surprised by the powerful Ecoboost as well as their comments on its handling of the heavy load. I would have thought it to do better with the WD hitch but just proof that you can really overcome physics.

    It's tough to find specs on the Nissan (which will kill its fleet sales) but from what I can gather, its literally a 3/4 ton with smal rear spring pack and a semi floating axle (although it competes with Dana 60/ Ford 9.75). Also note: the base curb weight of an F-250 supercab 6.75' bed 4x4 6.2L is 6370lbs, right on par with the XD. The F-150 has a ludicrous number of options that can greatly change its axle ratings and gvwr. How was the truck you tested packaged? The F-150 supercrew w/3.5 is available in two different axle types (8.8 and 9.75HD) multiple ratios, two different chassis wall thicknesses (.087 and .1 in) and aux trans coolers. You need the Max tow package (only available on the 3.5) to get the beefed up rear end. That package isn't available on the Limited. Which I reiterate, how was the F-150 that you tested packaged?

    • @hackfreehvac
      @hackfreehvac 6 років тому +1

      That's because the V8 in the Titan doesn't make good low end Torque like the Ecoboost AND since the Titan has no forced induction (turbo) it looses power as you gain altitude due to loss of air density.
      The more you climb a grade the more difference in power between a turbo and not turbo engine as the turbo engine will still put out near full torque.
      The Titan probably loses 50 Ft Lbs by time it gets to the top of the mountain if not more.
      Our small SUV with the little 1.6 zrcoboost has a bit more lag from a dead stop up in the higher elevations but it still makes full power and it absolutely FLIES around the non turbo bigger engine cars and SUV's at that point.

    Tfl in case you didn't know you can manually shift the ford too. And you can also lock any gear you want and it will not switch a gear just by giving it throttle no matter how much you tow, but it'll downshift if you're slowing 2
