I used the deposit money to buy a circular saw and glue. I already had a drill. Good God is took a long time breaking down pallets and I saw no money for a long time because I needed to use every cent to buy the tools needed for the next job. But the stuff was nicer and nicer and I got faster and faster (and better). I don't do it full time so I had to let people know up front that it'll take a while but they'll get a good deal because the furniture will be made of solid wood instead of the cheap nasty stuff available at the local stores Now I make smalls as a legit side hustle in my backyard. I just found out that my work throws away a ton of broken pallets every day. You've certainly given me the kick in the pants I need to get out there and put 'em to good use@@dainermade
As disabled/chronically ill young adult I've been looking at things I could do to still earn just a Lil more then my government issued budget. I love woodwork and have had several classes innit growing up. The cost of wood etc has often scared me off from tryin anythin with it but your video gives me mad hope especially as my able bodied mum and dad love to help out with heavy work (which would be takin the pallets appart) Thanks so much my friend
Hi Mark Never met a Mark who wasn’t a good bloke. Love the video. Laughed when your son was the best way to denail the timber. You’ve inspired me. Some of your pieces are absolutely primo. Love your work sir.
You gave me the inspiration to start a side hustle in pallet wood furniture. I am a landscaper and over the years have thrown away so many good pieces of wood and noticed the local timber merchant had trouble getting rid of the pallets. So I bought a thicknesser the other day for about 180 quid and it works great. I have made a table saw out of an old skill saw and I have now clamped up my first set of boards. I love that despite clearly having learned a lot and completing some great projects you are still humble and don't look down on the beginner. Thank you for that!✌
@@dainermade I do a lot of tool reviews in the Landscaping side but I can see my channel start to turn into a wood working channel lol. But I'm lucky to have some of the better had tools at my disposal. Probably should get a table saw tho. The DIY one doesn't look very safe lol
If you ever do a fence repair/replacement job, save those fence pickets, 2x4s, & 4x4s. We just replaced our fence last yr, & I saved all the wood. I built a rolling spice rack for between my fridge/cabinets outta the sanded pickets, & have many other wonderful ideas for the rest. I'm so inspired! Sometimes you can also find free wood/reclaimed wood from jobsites or remodels that is pretty amazing, but you might have some that's unusable too. The great thing about wood... it burns, so you don't have to pay to dispose of it just get a li'l fire pit & voilá~ all cleaned up!
Great video Mark. I love the way you're helping people interested in woodworking dive in and not doubt themselves just because they only own a few basic tools. I started out like this years ago with a secondhand drop saw and some basic hand tools. People laughed at me and the things I made. I remember the words "People aren't going to buy that shit" being spoken at me like I was a joke. I'm glad I didn't listen to that person and the numerous other put downs. Today I own well over a hundred thousand dollars worth of machinery, and this "hobby" is now a very successful business. I love what I do, and it never feels like I'm actually 'working' for a living. We need more people like you in the world. Legend mate. Just subscribed.
"We need more people like you in the world." Well, to me it seems that we also need more people like you! I hope your business will continue to make you happy!
Using pallets is great. I've got a guy who sells a truckload of pallets for $50 here in KY. I used those to build a greenhouse and a deck and fence. Keep up the good work.
I think many people, myself included, don't realize that a hobby built is something one builds upon. One learns from experience, mistakes and slowly but surely buys the right tools they need. Thanks for the video, good luck to you Sir! You're working hard for your trade and it's a beautiful thing.
Thank you for the video! I am from the Chicago area and free pallets and crate wood are just all over here. Most places toss em' in a dumpster. What a waste! Everything from pallets to plywood to boards you could build fences or sheds with.
I am actually coming up to retirement and was looking at doing exactly what you described in the video. This video is of tremendous help to me and actually somewhat relived to see that there are people with my kind of budget that can still make outstanding things from free wood. No intention to make money in anyway, just a hobby to pass my time and use tools loud enough to drown out the wifey 😉. Thank you very much from a now loyal subscriber in London (UK).
i love this video! cheap hand tools, salvaged wood, large gaps in my joints, and lots of elbow grease are how i made my first projects 15 years ago. bought shop tools bit by bit over the years and my accuracy and workflow improved bit by bit too. i've been (mostly) following the guideline my mentor passed on to me: no more than one new tool per project.
Mate, thanks so much for this. So many videos start with "this is a simple build with basic tools" then they proceed to pull out table saw, mitre saw, thicknesser and everything else that beginners don't have. You have shown how to start with very little and build up. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Hi Mark I have not seen your videos before however you go through it where everyone can follow, and you show how you can do this even without $30000 of tools. Keep making videos and great furniture
I really want to get into woodworking with pallets. I have currently collected roughly 50 pallets of various sizes. Just came across your video and will definitely be watching as many as possibly. Thank you.
I must admit, I never thought pallet furniture can look as good as you made them look. Really nice work. Hope to see and learn more from you soon. Have a great week.
I’m 27 watched your vids and you’ve been a big help in getting me started, I suffer with mental health and this is sure a good get away when times get rough keep up the great work! Much love
Keep your spirits up, continually seek things in your life to be thankful for starting where you're at, your breath, etc., and expand out from there. I recommend using your phone's camera and taking pictures of beautiful things wherever you go. Do that for a day or two and, before you know it, you'll constantly be finding beautiful things everywhere.
Mate…I’ve just started woodworking myself and I’ve been doing the exact same thing. It’s a great way to learn basic skills (through mistakes) without losing big bucks on expensive timber. Love it 👍
I can relate so well to this video.... I don't have a shed load of wood working tools but love making stuff. I am by no means a skilled craftsman, but I'm not letting that stop me.
I have built my chicken house out of pallets. I am currently building other chicken stuff with pallets. I figured out myself how to disasemble pallets and remove nails, but i see in this video that there are lots of efficient techniques ... Pallet parts are not always well shaped but they are often made out of hard woods and withstand well outdoor conditions. This is great to learn wood working while making durable and good quality stuff.
Thank you soooo much. I started out eith pallet wood and that's all I think about is building stuff. I am starting to think about selling as I just don't have the space and love building.
Mark I subscribed because of your realistic approach to your work, people don’t understand how much work goes into preparing the wood to be able to construct something,I do I know, thanks!
I am 60 years old had major spinal surgery that didn’t turn out good I am pretty much bedridden I can walk maybe 15 minutes with a cane I refuse to take any financial assistance so your board here is helping me with ideas thank you so much. I still haven’t got it all figured out. what I want you to know is that you are a large step in the right direction. Thank you. God Bless
I can't tell you how awesome it is to find this channel. I love (the idea of) wood working and do some in my garage. I recently started using pallet wood for some projects and to find this channel with someone who actually shares my name (first I've seen outside of my son) is just awesome.
I love this so much! Beautiful work! Thanks for showing everyone how to make use of pallets. I think they are wonderful and my family constantly makes fun of me!
I like the very calm way you use to explain how it went down from the beginning with a basic set of tools and how you slowly started from the bottom up. Thank you for showing where to start!
Absolute legend mate ! And true inspiration for the next few months (years). I used palletwood to make campervans during my stay down under ! Greeting from France
When Covid started everything being out of stock I started buying old/used tables and desks for very cheap or even free and then I would restore and refurbish them and make them new again. It’s made me thousands so far served around 4000 customers but it definitely has slowed down a bit. I would like to start building my own stuff now there’s a lot of free pallets I can get around my city so hopefully I can start that too. I have the drill, sander, jigsaw and circular saw. Might have to get couple more tools but I don’t mind as this is something I’m really considering. Kinda nervous to start tho I just hope I can pull it off thanks for the video.
Mate, you're an inspiration. After watching this, I have an urge and an urgency now to get back out to the workshop. I started losing my motivation, but watching this video, it is back. Thanks for putting this video up, it's just what I needed. 👍🍺👍
Fantastic story of how it all began and developing from a very modest setup. With your skill, you make it all look so easy - that's the trademark of a true professional. You have inspired me enormously. Thank you!
Thank you for the video. I was going through my old wood and before throwing it out I decided to run it through the table saw. I was surprised at how good the grain looked. So I picked up some carving knives and started whittling. I'm not much of a carpenter but I do like working with wood. I can relate to what you're saying about it being good for the heart.
Bloody ripper mate, great to see someone from my old stomping grounds in Townsville while I am living in the Netherlands. Inspirational, you signed me up!
Wood working is something I've always been interested in, though I never really had the time due to it being a hobby and not making me money. But now I think I'm going to start making and selling furniture!!! Thanks so much for posting this video mate! It gave me so much inspiration!👍
Great video and hobby. If possible, know the history of your pallets. Heat treated is better than chemicals like Methyl Bromide. Pallets may be stamped HT or MB. Obviously, go for the former. Avoid pallets used to transport chemicals or other materials that can introduce anything hazardous into the wood. Take precautions to avoid inhaling the dust. Finally, avoid burning pallet wood if there’s a chance you may inhale the smoke.
as one who made pallets for a living - I was at my company for 16 years but had to leave because of chronic illness caused pain so bad that i simply could not stand up to do a day's work, as a former pallet maker i am intrigued. well done sir the start of what you did was my job in reverse - which i had to do from time to time if a mistake was made requiring disassembly of the thing or if damaged boards had to be removed to be replaced as part of repairing pallets as for the rest that you do, i am impressed i was proud of that job but only got 16 years at and now i am retired, at age 65
Pulling pallets apart is definitely hard work! There's no getting away from it 😅 Great video Mark - well explained and some brilliant projects you've done with reclaimed wood
Thanks mate. I've always wanted to start woodworking. I work in healthcare and my life sucks. I always think about working with wood but don't know where to start. Thank you. I'm going to start on a hallway table
Thanks Mark for all your hard work and showing me how to start woodworking with very little. I tried to film my first project (coffee table) and understand the work you have gone through to put out the content you do. Thanks again!
I'm working on getting started with pallets. Im trying to learn how to do things, not how to build specific things, and finding these types of channels very helpful.
Good on you mate!..... I have literally been making shelving units for our home with rubbish pallet wood the past month... So glad I found you as you've given me encouragement to keep going.... Just subbed.
Typically, I turn my nose up at pallet projects. I work in the trucking industry, and see them covered in horrible stuff. That said, you may have changed my mind. Your work is great. Thank you for this.
I’m just starting this pallet woodworking adventure myself, got two more today. What I’m wondering is do you have to worry about different wood treatment for pallets. I’m getting heat treated wood. I want non toxic wood because I’m building a compost bin. I’ve noticed they are brittle, should I avoid heat treated wood for building furniture or does it not matter?
Awesome vid, just what I needed to see. I'm at the early stages myself, got a whole pile of pallet wood and the basic tools. I've been mucking about with small items, hadn't really considered furniture. I'll be following along. Cheers 👍
Thank you SO much for sharing your tips. This is the best instructional video I have seen in a long time & think it is about time to start working on my passion. I totally agree with your sign from Bill & Ted in the background: Be excellent to each other.
Excellent inspirational video. Enjoying working with pallets is all about patience. Whilst they might be free, they don't just fall apart into beautifully flat, square stock. Thanks for sharing, you have a new subscriber.👍
One very important note for EVERYONE: Wherever you get the wooden skids, honestly find out who bought the material that was on the skids and ASK PERMISSION from the right person, because in many cases, they paid deposit money (usually $25 or more) for each and are just waiting for the vendor to take them back and refund their money. In some cases, they did not pay for them and the vendor won't come and get them, so then the owner will be glad to allow you to take them away. ASK PERMISSION FOR SKIDS.
yeah round my parts the free ones are usually outside a fence line and have a bit of cardboard zip tied to the fence saying "fREe". if it looks like it's on the property and there's no sign, then it's a 'leave it alone' or 'ask' situation. usually if it's stacked up real nice and pretty it's obviously a 'leave it alone' situation haha
You don't want the police randomly pulling you over and asking where you got the pallet from unless you have previously asked the company/ owner if it is ok to remove a pallet from their stack of pallets.
You also want to know how that pallet was treated, whether it was merely heat treated or if it's been chemically treated. You also want to know what was carried on that pallet, and where it's been. Chemicals, bacteria, mold, excrement, cooties, eldrich curses or smelling like toner cartridges can really ruin a project.
This guys amazing! That dude that said 30k in tools is an absolute schmuck! Thanks for the solid video man. Never seen on UA-cam in the DIY section such a genuinely nice person. Thanks again man.
Hi Mark. Great video. I’m 8 months into my own woodwork/workshopping adventure. Can you please do a video on how to select the right pallet wood for making things out of? Most folks aren’t aware that some pallets are chemically treated or have been used to transport hazardous materials, and therefore should not be made into items that people should spend much time near. Thanks again!! 🤙🏻✨
Great video Mark, thank you so much for putting this together and such selfess teaching, your work is wonderful and I can see the progression of your skills and artistry, keep it up mate, you have a new sub and big cheers from BC Canada!
I’ve always been interested in building stuff and just recently got into woodworking and furniture building on youtube. I’m about to get my own place soon and i was excited to start, but a little… I don’t want to say intimidated, but I was bracing for a few months of stumbling around in the dark and wasting a bit of money. This seems like an excellent way to get started while still producing something useful and beautiful. And even on top of that - it’s a great chance to develop my own style! I can see myself being much more willing to experiment with this setup than I would be buying expensive lumber and tools. Thank you for sharing!

That and your a fellow Aussie working in your backyard workshop like most of us with what we can afford to work with. Congrats on doing so well with your channel, and keep those vids rolling. Love the fact that you added how you started out, how much you got them for. And fair play was a nice thing to message the other peeps and say you'd make them one too. And also making more of a profit by doing so. Bonus . And wow all of that with basic equipment. Due to the fact that I don't have a lot of the tools. It makes me believe I can also do the same without thinking I need to spend money first. I have started making a space today so I can make my own table to start working on. And watching this has given me the confidence that I got this. As you gotta start somewhere . So thank you !!!!! 👌🏻😎

Dude. You are an inspiration for the younger generations. Your execution and final product is exemplary.
Thanks mate. I hope they get out there and have a go
I just found out that my work throws away a ton of broken pallets every day. You've certainly given me the kick in the pants I need to get out there and put 'em to good use@@dainermade
As disabled/chronically ill young adult I've been looking at things I could do to still earn just a Lil more then my government issued budget. I love woodwork and have had several classes innit growing up. The cost of wood etc has often scared me off from tryin anythin with it but your video gives me mad hope especially as my able bodied mum and dad love to help out with heavy work (which would be takin the pallets appart)
Thanks so much my friend
Hi Mark
Never met a Mark who wasn’t a good bloke.
This 100% how I got started. Just sold a $250 pallet table that cost $35 to make and loved making it.
I am just starting out and can you please tell me what the size for the hall table is for that price? Thank you!
@@dainermade Thank you!
How much labor time did it take to make it?
Love it - you're a natural teacher! Been usin pallets for chicken runs, showers...but those nails - need to get hold of that bit of kit!
"We need more people like you in the world."
Well, to me it seems that we also need more people like you!
I hope your business will continue to make you happy!
Mark can't do everything by himself...the world also needs more Jasons...how about it mate....
Finally someone saying it as it is. Simple and straightforward no bullshit . Looking forward to seeing more videos.
Thanks
Mate! Thank you, you just made my day. Nice gesture 🫡
Where is your Join button mate?
@dainermade do you have a join button mate and, is there a video where you made a jig for getting the first square edge on pallet boards? Thank you.
Hope wifey doesn't read your posts.😂
I got lots of ideas and inspiration. Can't say it's easy, but I think it's true that I can make money if I follow your lead.
i love this video! cheap hand tools, salvaged wood, large gaps in my joints, and lots of elbow grease are how i made my first projects 15 years ago. bought shop tools bit by bit over the years and my accuracy and workflow improved bit by bit too. i've been (mostly) following the guideline my mentor passed on to me: no more than one new tool per project.
Thank you.
Excellent. Hope it helps
I must admit, I never thought pallet furniture can look as good as you made them look. Really nice work. Hope to see and learn more from you soon. Have a great week.
@@dainermade you started alot better than how i started...
i started off trying to make a guitar from scratch with a pocket knife....
didnt work out.
Love it 👍
I’m a cabinet maker of 16 years and iv got to say I’m very very impressed with your set up
Keep the videos coming pal 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is fantastic. I’m a renovation carpenter who sometimes wonders whether it’s worth changing my game a little. Your video is quite inspiring!
What I love more than the tables and the work you’ve put in, is your beautiful mindset.
I love his way of sharing and talking. Most people on these channels use big words that I don't know the meaning of. I really like his style...
Happy to hear your going to get back to the shop Chris, good the mind and heart and we enjoy your content mate. Go get em.
U are a messer u will b in pub next day
Fortuitous find.
Just quit my office job to try exactly this. Had to, 11:44 says it all. Cheers for taking the time.
Fantastic story of how it all began and developing from a very modest setup. With your skill, you make it all look so easy - that's the trademark of a true professional. You have inspired me enormously. Thank you!
Woodworking is the perfect hobby! I really want to do it somewhere in the future just to relax..
What a great video! I was getting frustrated with my pallet DIY's, but you've restored my confidence and I'm inspired once again. Thank you so much!!!
Its amazing the amount of furniture you show you can build with pallets, really impressive, instant sub!
Bloody ripper mate, great to see someone from my old stomping grounds in Townsville while I am living in the Netherlands. Inspirational, you signed me up!
This was so cool! I've always been interested in gathering up piles of pallets, but people tell me it's not allowed or something.
Finally, avoid burning pallet wood if there’s a chance you may inhale the smoke.
as one who made pallets for a living - I was at my company for 16 years but had to leave because of chronic illness caused pain so bad that i simply could not stand up to do a day's work, as a former pallet maker i am intrigued.
well done sir
the start of what you did was my job in reverse - which i had to do from time to time if a mistake was made requiring disassembly of the thing or if damaged boards had to be removed to be replaced as part of repairing pallets
as for the rest that you do, i am impressed
i was proud of that job but only got 16 years at and now i am retired, at age 65
Hi mate! That was a nice story to read. Thank you
Pulling pallets apart is definitely hard work! There's no getting away from it 😅 Great video Mark - well explained and some brilliant projects you've done with reclaimed wood
@@dainermade Happy new year man!
Thanks mate. I've always wanted to start woodworking. I work in healthcare and my life sucks. I always think about working with wood but don't know where to start. Thank you. I'm going to start on a hallway table
Awesome mate, get started and get get addicted. A wood business is never out of reach for anyone
I love this video! Appreciate how you started from beginner and now to pro! Very inspiring for us beginners!
@@dainermade That is exactly what a pro would say haha
Just watched this one again-again. If I ever forget why I do the things I do, I just watch this video 😃
Excellent story and video mate. You seem like a decent bloke...for an Aussie 😂
Don’t hold that against me 😆
Excellent inspirational video.
Kind of a given. Most people ask for anything that they take, unless they are thieves.
You don't want the police randomly pulling you over and asking where you got the pallet from unless you have previously asked the company/ owner if it is ok to remove a pallet from their stack of pallets.
Here, any pallets at roadside are free.🇳🇿
What does it matter? You're not eating it.
@@moshesheckel7369 Well done.
@@moshesheckel7369 🤣
Hey, thank you for making this video. I've been struggling to find a new passion. Might go find some pallets myself!
Great video Mark, thank you so much for putting this together and such selfess teaching, your work is wonderful and I can see the progression of your skills and artistry, keep it up mate, you have a new sub and big cheers from BC Canada!
I LOVE it ALL! The guy (you), the positive attitude, the openness to new skills, the accent and the recycling.
Good man. 👍🏼
Friendly reminder: not all pallets are free. Make sure you ask before you try to take them otherwise you’ll be making a call home like me

You are talented, ingenious and brilliant!
I wish you success, Thank you from California!
I always love watching your videos. I’d say you’d be my most favourite wood working channel. Love the ideas, the honesty, and the humor. That and your a fellow Aussie working in your backyard workshop like most of us with what we can afford to work with.
Congrats on doing so well with your channel, and keep those vids rolling.

I going to start my own business making unique furniture this video helps me understand how to do things better. Thanks 👍 from England
