Now THAT is a labor of love…and talent! Nice work! You taught me something!

An impressive restoration project, well made and well presented. This piece had emotional significance to you, so rescueing was in order. A new bench, made from more suitable wood, and with tighter joints, could have been produced in less time, but that wasn't the point. Some people disapprove of visible dowel reinforcement, but I like it. Good call, and certainly heaps better than the nails it started out with :) A minor thing about the new seat: Glueing won't work, as the boards will move under varying humidity and temperatures. I realize you also screwed it on, and that will work, although you'll probably need to tighten the screws regularly. Also, I would have slightly spaced the boards, to reduce pooling of rainwater, and to ensure they have space to expand and contract with the weather. All in all a superb rescue, and a satisfying video to watch.
Your comment line by line was valuable and readable for me and I thank you for it and I would like to answer it completely. I am honored that you enjoyed this bench restoration. Of course, making new furniture is much easier and even cheaper than restoration, but according to you, our goal was something else that I followed. Personally, I use wooden pins instead of nails in my renovations and carpentry because they are both stronger and more beautiful, provided that you use a special and high-density wood. I completely agree with you about the expansion and contraction. If a bench is going to be placed in the open environment, there should be some space between the boards for the expansion and contraction of the seat.
@@CreativeIdeasMaker Thank you for the encourageing response. It was mostly used in house carpentry, but I have seen it used in furniture making as well. Very tight joints, that don't even need glue. You drill the hole through the mortise in your female piece, about where you would drill through an assembled joint, but without the tenon inserted. then insert the tenon, and make a centering point in the tongue of the tenon, a little further toward the joint. Disassemble, drill the hole, and pound in a peg. The peg will force the joint tight.
