My hobby is shooting train videos. I had parked at this metal stamping business many times without giving a thought to their stack of pallets by the road. One of my sons kept wanting to take a few pieces of wood home so I let him and we ran them through the planner. Surprise they were maple cherry oak and beech. Now we go there about once a week, break down as many as we can til my wife’s van is full.

I love everything about your work. While I don't use pallets often, I do try and make as much as I can from recycled timber for all the same reasons. Broken furniture, stuff in council cleanups, so on. You know those stakes councils use to support tree saplings along the side of the road? When the tree grows and no longer needs the stake, you think the council comes around and collects them? Of course not. The stakes end up on the footpath or in the street. So I collect them. Made a side table for my living room earlier this year out of garden stakes. And think about that; a tree grows up, is cut down with sole the destiny to become support for other trees. But before it ends up in the tip or rotting in the gutter, I step in and give it one last purpose, which is a place of honour as furniture in my house for the rest of my life.

I did one two-drawer table with just one giant pallet.
My work isn’t a ‘hobby’ and I tracked my time. So two things turned out:
First, the money I ‘saved’ on ‘free’ lumber took me enough time that when converted to dollars I could have bought clean, fresh lumber for a mere $25- or $30 more. Well worth my time.
Second, it turns out that after vacuuming, wire brushing, sanding, then vacuuming again that my $225 glue-joint obviously lost its razor sharp edge within a few cuts.
So overall it cost me about $60 extra to use suboptimal wood.
Not going to do that again!!!!

Just about everything I've learned about woodworking I've learned using pallet wood and I have always given exactly zero f's what others think. I have a productive shop now filled with benches, cabinets, drawers, jigs and just about anything you can think of all made of free pallet wood. It has been all free and taught me so much. I would advise anyone to get into pallet wood even if to get a new perspective on it.

when i first discovered pallets my health was in a bad way and so i had a very limited income.... ok i was broker than broke lol. Making something out of pallets was the only way i could afford furniture! i even reused the nails! once i made a few things i started looking for other people on the interweb for inspiration. thats when i found u! i said hey this guy is really bringing the the best out of this beat up trashed up wood! like to the next level! Followed! It was cool to see someone else on a similar journey of pallet wood discovery and ignoring all the noise from the negative head waggers and lip flappers. i started finding free broken furniture and repairing them and adding pallet wood i processed. it helped my physical and mental health and it did great things for my bank account lol. Did just that, I got started...! Collected pallets, started to break them down, it's tough at first as each new step is just that, new, never done by you before. Pallet buster makes it so much easier, and while I had a table saw, the thicknesser was a welcome birthday present. Latest addition was a cyclone dust extractor I made, and I'm into the first hall table. I have other things in my head to make, and I see new projects in every day settings. But the focus it to make and sell, aim to cover my costs, then carry on.

One of the first videos I saw was Jasper Makes, which after a few videos led me to you. I started woodworking about 8 to 9 months ago and it was the two of you that made me start my whole woodworking journey using pallet wood. Thank you for showing me an easy way to get wood without paying for it, if it wasn't for that tidbit of information I wouldn't have been able to build the things I have due to the lack of funds to buy wood. I do however, use a mixture of pallet wood and store bought wood for my projects but it's nice to know that if I don't have the money to buy it then I can still create with pallet wood that I might not be able to purchase. Like you said, you do you! I also hope to be on UA-cam soon! I still have to figure out how to get good sound and I can't use my phone because it's full and would take days if not weeks to clear off to use, maybe eventually. I'm also waiting on a laptop that's being given to me but I'm so close to being online! You guys are amazing and I just wanted to say thank you for showing me a viable way to keep doing what I love! Stay safe and Happy Building 💯😁

Small tip. Could be helpful if it suits you. When using the pneumatic denailer (I use the same one you have) I use a bucket to catch nails too and I find it useful to have it partially filled with water so the nails don't hit the other nails or debris and bounce back out. Water slows the down enough to stay in the bucket.

Greeting from SA. Mental health improves greatly from such a hobby, I found turning (when I was still doing it) very peaceful. Unfortunately, and ironically, a decline in MH, has stopped me from doing anything, as a lack of enthusiasm does more than affect your desire to do, but also to create...and think! However, after quite some time, ie well over 12 months 'absent', I am planning a comeback...and a big one at that! After all, I have a LOT to catch up on! Shortly before my 'decline', I was getting prepped for some major projects for my side hustle, so so stock, tools etc were accumulated...and then it all stopped dead in its tracks!
A few sales from Timbecon recently are helping to get me further enthused, and to do some bigger jobs. "In for a penny...", as the old saying goes!

I think we all need this t-shirt in our lives. (I'll even design it for you, if you like...! 😁)
Been loving this channel from the start, mate; you keep doing you...!
Finally got myself the shop I've always wanted, so the tedious process of layout and workflow begins...! From walking sticks to chessboards, I want to tinker with them all... but every moment in my new shop, every new idea, every mess, and every pile of man glitter is punctuated by that phrase in the back of my mind... complete with a little Aussie flair. 😎 Stop procrastinating, overthinking, and...
    Just... get... started.

Another enjoyable and informative video, Mark. I especially enjoy #10, the problem solving. I try to remember it when I a project frustrates me. By the way, my Mrs. is coming around to the palletwood aesthetic. She'd been skeptical for a while but after I made a computer monitor shelf for my desk, a shoe storage/bench for the mud room and a raised dog bowl holder, she actually requested a window table for her indoor herb garden. Anyway, thanks as usual for the great content and keep well.

Love your channel! I have been wood working for over 40 years and I lost everything in a hurricane a few years back. I have been building my new shop and getting tools to replace and am almost ready to get back to it! Thanks for all you do! That is true I have heard over the years putting people down for not having certain tool or a small shop or they use the "wrong joinery". I have always told them to do them, to just do something and learn from everything!

    I just got started!
Had a jobsite saw in my shop for a year and fired it up a few times, but it always scared the hell out of me. A few rookie mistake kickback incidents didn’t help. Wasn’t hurt though, just shit myself.
Yesterday I faced my fear and got cracking making a house for the feral cats that live on our property.
Biggest hurdle is not having a jointer. So I fabbed one up using a miter slot on the table saw. And holy shit it’s the best thing ever! Just turning wonky pallet wood into squared off, straight pieces… it’s damned near orgasmic!

Love your videos! Will say though, recycling wood (not pallets but reclaimed and such) has many times cost me more than purchased wood in saw, bandsaw, planer and jointer blade from hitting the nails and junk the metal detector miss! As a note, heavily rusted, 100+ year old nails don’t set off many metal detectors but toast blades
