Haha was going to say the same thing. DS at this point has become a boring comparison for every 3rd person action game. We don't want every game to be DS, that is a niche genre which has it's merits but stop comparing it like it's the zenith of gaming. It's not.

True, but the reason the difficulty was dropped was because in the previous game the difficulty felt unfair and you had to grind levels in order to even with the enemies in the game. A lot of fans from the first game saw this as a con.
david moyes Yeah but whats the point of playing a jrpg if the combat is too easy? That makes the game very boring without some sort of challenge. Hopefully the devs come out with a hard mode dlc or patch update.
Most JRPG's random encounters are fairly easy. Take Final Fantasy X for example. You can steamroll all random encounters for the most part but the bosses are tricky. It sounds like the same situation here.

HarryMoho 7.8 is actually a low score. Why decimals when ign doesn't use the old rating system? Their review doesn't make sense when they give COD 9s and I have notice they really don't care for JRPGS but sure they give Mass Effect 4 7.7 when it was released? It isn't a bad game now tho with the patches but still has problems however. And they actually gave MGS Survive almost a 7? Yeah not enough bribing.

As someone who hasnt really been able to get into a JRPG since DQ8, I prefer the perspective of someone a bit on the outside looking in rather than someone who is versed in the genre tbh.

I love how easy it is. I play games to have fun, not die every second ( not a popular opinion, I know) But I don't want to be stressed out, I want to be enjoying it. after all, it is only a game.

Agree.. im 30's now. Priority changed. I have my own family. Stress in work. When i play games , i want to be relax. Not to get frustrated because of dying in 1 section of a game. I have a short time to play, i dont want to waste it and not to progress in the game because of difficulty.. lol if i want challenge i play pubg for 1 hour.. hehe

For those of you on the fence on buying this, I will say that the first game was amazing and everything on the 2nd one seems better so don't base your purchase on 1 review. Every other reviewer has given this game 8 or 9 so keep that in mind.

Well IGN did give Doom 2016 a score of 7.1 and that game was amazing...
?? Gives 7.8 but doesn't give enough reason to justify the score? Where are "pros" and "cons" at the end of the verdict section? All I heard was "not enough voice acting and uninteresting characters."
Many JRPGs or Japanese games in general, some parts won't have voice acting but will have dialogue. It's usually from side characters or during certain sections that are not a part of the main quest.
It's not even an issue and is to be expected.
Because the reviewer have no brains.
I just want everyone to know that Ni No Kuni 2 has an 86 for PS4 and an 87 for PC on Metacritic. That's higher than Ni No Kuni 1 on PS3 which got an 85 on Metacritic.

I think we put too much importance into review scores. Guys like this one is so stuck on it he needed to remind people of the score (based on 4 reviews) just to calm them down, like seriously....?
With the game industry how it is I normally refer to Metacritic for an idea on how the game is. I normally wait for Mac, ACG and Gameranx thou

mel b ok few things:
1. Preferring one review over another because it gave a perfect score for a product that is receiving 8.5/10 on average (at the time of this writing) is just confirmation bias and fanboying of the highest caliber.
2. A reviewer is not tasked with completing 100% of every game. That takes far too long to do and it is nearly impossible when a company gives you a review copy a week or so before release. A reviewer simply completes as much of the story mode as possible and gives their opinion on gameplay, story, level design, etc.
This is getting glowing reviews everywhere else
I just preorder this game , we need to support good game creators who stand far away from microtransactions

This game is classic to me, just be sure to play it on hard mode. I love the battle system and sound track.

Whose playing in 2021? Played 45 hours so far. This game is somewhere between meh and okay. The real time battle areas (not battle instances) are fun. Kingdom building is fun. My major issue is the story and characters feel weak. I dont care about any of the characters because they all feel too kiddie like. Definitely worth a single playthrough if you can get past that. 7/10 Imo.
I'm playing it on Switch lol the framerate is absolutely abysmal but its playable and is the only for me to play it.

Not to mention that people should know that you can't really trust IGN reviews anyway. The first Ni No Kuni game wasn't great, but I'm pretty optimistic that the 2nd one is going to be good. Just the characters alone caught my interest.

Naw, reviews are there to help people decide if they want to buy it or not. I personally look at many reviews and aggregate the most common issues before I pony up 60 bucks.
the review was right though, I mean i give it an 8. However I do agree the characters are flat and don't offer much depth the story is very straight forward and the combat is. . . TO easy. But that's just my opinion still a great game though.
Honestly what makes this one more interesting than the first game is that it doesn't keep you waiting for gameplay straight from the beginning we jump into action and lastly how can the reviewer say that the characters barely bring enough depth? I feel like each characters fit their role very role and give this game many layers and a place to connect with.

I remember never wanting to play a jrpg game and wasnt into those games especially anime type games but this game looks interesting really interesting especially where you build your own kingdom and upgrade it and the different play styles is also lovely so i dont see why give it this score

The circlejerk, that is the comment section, aside. I think this review is good. I played Ni nu Kuni 2 myself the past few days and..it IS lacking in some mayor ways. It's still a good game but comparably not as good as the first one. I think this review reflects that rather well. If this Review didn't had the name IGN at it, it would get a lot more credit I think.

Mario odessey (with the jump button)
Call of duty (Right trigger)
Assassin's Creed (counter attack)
Witcher 3 (Basic attack)
Final Fantasy XV (Basic attack)
Batman games (counter attack)
Etc.
I wouldn't disregard a game based on a single aspect of it. A game could have great music, interesting mechanics, great visual design, great characters, great story, etc.
(Also Ni No Kuni 2 is actually short enough, about 30 hours is you don't bother with side stuff)
All of the games you listed are bad (excluding The Witcher).
And NNK2 could have those things, but it doesn't, bad gameplay, bad story, bland characters, bland villain. MC is a furry and a trap.

Fair enough, but do you only go by one critic's opinion?
I reply because many of those who don't like the review are basing their opinion on one miniscule critic, bashing IGN constantly because 7.8/10. I know it's a popular thing to do, but the barrage of hate really gets sad after a while. I know my words won't change anything, but I feel the need to contribute to even things out a tad.
Wrath of the White Witch deserves a 10 much more than this sequel does in my opinion.
The only thing I'm worried about is the lack of voice acting/cinematic presentation. This actually was an issue I had with the first game as well where I felt there were way too many segments of the story where you'd just be reading voiceless text that felt out of place in a game with such a high production value. Sad to hear that hasn't been improved in the sequel. Still a Day 1 buy.
People in the comments must forget that story is tje number one aspect of a JRPG. You all didn't even play the game yet. Still a day one for me.

I like the game :) but I like the first one better, they are two diffrent games but I favor the familiar based combat over revenent kingdoms "beat em up" style combat. Both are good systems though! I also favored the aesthetics in wrath of the white witch as well, I wish they had kept the map the same. It felt like you were playing in an entirely different world, but maybe that was the point.
Thankfully I never use an IGN review to tell how a game is... they have an absurdly non- consistent reviewing system, with too many reviewers ... maybe this game would have gotten a better score if it was a little less Ni No Kuni, and a little more Call of Duty... cause you know, no one can have enough COD games on a yearly basis... cause COD is gaming perfection, didn’t you know? IGN knows...

Excited for this! The lack of difficulty is a letdown, but if there's at least an option to crank the difficulty mode up I'll be fine. Even if there's not, you have to remember Ni No Kuni 1 was pretty much a breeze if you grinded once a couple of levels higher as well.

The reviewer didn't reviewed it fair. All I heard was the combat was too easy. Yes, it's much easier than the first title but ign has been known for to give unfair reviews to games that are really good. The game is fun and I do think this game improved on a lot of things but I wish it was more challenging but overall it's outstanding!

ABL36 Professional reviews are suppose to be professional. Professional reviews are not the same as just any old person giving their personal opinion. Professional reviews are opinions too, but they are suppose to be done with professional ethics. They are suppose to have certain criteria and standards. This includes stuff every journalist should know. Not only is this so called professional review loaded with spoilers without any spoiler warning, but taking off points because he hates easy games is like taking off points because a game has a lot of blue colors and he hates the color blue. They once gave a Pokemon game a similar score just because the game's world had a lot of water. No professional reviewer does that. It is evident that IGN does not require their reviewers to be professional and has no standards or ethics code.

I’m sorry but after loving the first game I agree with this review. I’m not digging the characters or the story yet and it is really easy. I was on a boss fight at the dice factory and I had to go tend to my crying baby. I didn’t realize but I forgot to pause. When I got back my character still had 3/4 health and the boss was down to 50% and I hadn’t done anything yet. I don’t mind easy gameplay but that was kind of ridiculous. Maybe it gets better, I’m only 10 hours in right now, but I regret spending 60bucks.
So, 2 weeks later how is it going?
Been playing this for a bit and was loving every minute (the lack of a fully voiced dialogue track is probably my biggest gripe so far but I'm only about 6 hours in.) and was really hyped for the immense love I was sure this game was going to get....but low and behold here I go to IGN first and damn...I couldn't disagree with this "meh" score any more. But we all just have to remember this is just one person's opinion, from the looks of it everywhere else this game is getting the love it really deserves.
Yeah, I'm done with IGN! I don't even care that the game got a lower than expected score - as I too don't like games that feel too easy.
I'm still going to get the game, except now I know exactly who to expect join my party, a good idea of how many skirmish battles to expect, and an idea of how big I can make my kingdom. No joke, I literally had no idea of any of that before watching this SPOILER HEAVY video
Maybe have a little more respect for your audience, and do what any respectful review does and only show the first couple hours of gameplay, unless highlighting a very important point that doesn't show spoilers.

I'm not anti-review, I just don't base my purchases entirely on reviews. I also don't get mad when one site differs from the others.

1. Bad character development.
2. Non memorable core characters.
3. Easy combat
Even with these flaws, the positives simply outweigh the negatives. The combat system is refreshing, allows a newer Fanbase to easily get into the game without a learning curve, new base building mechanics and tons of content. The artistic cell shaded graphics may seem hella similar to the first game, but looks far better.
This is an easy 8-9 depending on what you prefer in your Jrpgs. Yes, the characters are seemingly downgraded, looking how perfect the first game was.
IGN needs to be a little less strict on their reviews.

if the vast majority of reviews are floating around (at least in grading terms) a "B" and "-A", I'd say that this reviewer prob wasn't the best choice for the job.

Reviews are just opinions, someone else may feel different. He didn't care for it for certain reasons and that's fine but it shouldn't keel someone from purchasing it or playing it. Don't base your decision on this or any other review, make up your own mind whether you think it's worth playing or not. If you think it'll be fun then pick it up and if not then don't.
IGNs 13 million subs hurts me, it’s just too bad Bandai aren’t willing to stuff IGNs pockets like Activision and EA will. This isn’t critique of video games this is a rating out of 10 with extra points given depending on how many executives of IGN have money in their mailboxes. I’m glad my comment made you more money!

That being said, you should not make a decision to buy or not to buy something based on one opinion alone. You should get a second opinion, and I personally recommend the Easy Allies review video.
I'm playing this game right now and I just reached chapter 8. It's an odd game so far: Everything is there to make it an AWESOME experience, but something is missing. The mechanics are interesting and fresh, the world is fascinating, the music is great, the story is a bit on the childish side but it's charming... And yet the game just isn't really good. The characters are so god damn flat and boring, you just don't CARE about what happens to them. :-/ Any character introduced by sidequests has more depth than Evan and his friends. (And that says a lot, considering that most quests are simple fetch quests!). It just kind of feels like they had to cut out a lot of content, the story feels a bit rushed. :-/
if you played Dark Cloud you'd know Level-5 makes games for children, not really for adults. but adults can play it too, not saying they can't.

Yeah, I think the review is spot on. The game does drag in a lot of places, is too easy and the characters unremarkable.
