And for only double the cost? Man.. Your optimism is infectious. Realistically you can probably make the amount of power keeping a car N/A, only after multiple thousands of dollars.. That you could make strapping a 300 dollar ebay turbo on. Plus the turbo manifold and some piping and such, as well as a tune, running a conservative low amount of boost. Maybe five psi or so depending on the car and the turbo lol. It just really doesn't make sense on some cars... I will say though that some cars can benefit quite a lot more than one might think from your basic bolt-ons. I had a 5 cylinder Volkswagen MKV Rabbit.. The exhaust consisted of two resonators, a big ass muffler, and then a suit case muffler... Chopped that shit directly off, went up to 2.5 inches, added a magnaflow and called it a day.. Then the air intake, the one and only time I've ever looked at a car and knew that an air intake was going to wake a motor up instead of doing absolutely nothing.. Not even kidding. The thing came up about a foot long tube, did a 90 degree bend.. Went another 3/4 foot over the top of the hot engine, another 90, another 3/4 foot still on top of the hot engine, another 90, ANOTHER 3/4 foot on top of the hot engine... Out another maybe 1/2 foot tube into the throttle body. It literally did the most pointless, long, twisting loop... Right over the top of the hot engine inside of the engine cover before making its way to the intake manifold. It was the DUMBEST design I've ever seen in my life. A 300 dollar carbonio cold air intake (my only option) later... This thing was a bigger pipe diameter, the probably 4 inch cone filter was in the absolute perfect spot right inside an isolated pocket behind the bumper where air came in, and traveled about 1/4 of the distance to get to the intake mani. I never got a chance to get a tune before I wrecked it but... Trust me when I say this, I've had many cars and the first thing I've done on every single one of them was exhaust and intake because I enjoy the sound... I'm not someone that ever thinks my car got faster after just doing the exhaust and a cone filter. Had never happened to me before, hasn't happened since... I swear getting rid of those insane restrictions added 20-30 wheel to that Volkswagen though... On top of that 5 cylinder being one of the best sounding motors I've ever heard. Daniel Nelson a good turbo build for a 2ZZ-GE costs maybe about $7k and can get 400+hp, maybe 500 but not reliably. For a $13k NA build my goal is 240 crank. A guy I’m friends with on Facebook from a car group swapped his FRS. But he swapped it in a way that nobody else has so far. He used the 2AZ motor from a Scion TC and then turbo’d it. Pretty cool build. He has a page on Facebook called SRTuned if you wanna check it out and see the car. I don’t wanna post his real name here, but you could always message him and he could lead you to more build photos and so on. Last I saw he was putting down over 300hp. Not sure where he’s at now.

Might have something to do with the equipment they put in the driver's side tailpipe (no idea what it is but if I had to guess I'd say it measures co2/nox emissions). You can see it at around 9:00
@@m1llie_ It has nothing to do with the sensor attatched to the tailpipe. It has everything to do with the crap quality exhaust. Needs a resonator or a better overall exhaust design for it to sound nice. Currently it sounds like a straight pipe on a slow revving engine.
@@jonlaws4493 I mean, the stock FA20 makes 100 horsepower per liter without a VTEC style variable valve lift system while meeting various international emissions and noise standards. Armchair engineers always think they know better than the guys that have to actually sit down and design this shit while meeting X, Y and Z requirements.
Him saying that the car from the factory has 100 KW at the wheels was awfully suspicious. I wonder if his "stock" tune was tampered and purposefully undertuned so they could show off a bigger increase in power with the tune...
If you really want to make the most of this, you need to do a video on e85. I'd suggest an ECUtek tune as that would make for quite interesting content as you could cover not just e85, but the fact that it allows different maps (that you can change between with the cruise control stalk) and has a number of different features such as throttle blipping, launch control and flat foot shifting.
Not sure how it is in other countries, but here in the US, 91 octane really sucks the life out of them. They get a reputation of being slow being run in western mountain states with smog check certified OE exhaust and tune with 91 octane at high elevation. Then back east the cats get tossed, the tunes get changed, 93 is available everywhere, air is more dense, and the difference is pretty stunning.
damn straight moog... no filthy hot lagging turbos...you need clean, instant, internally intercooled, Supercharged Power.!!!......................many love, much props

Running: - mantic 9000 organic HD clutch - RacerX Oil cooler - SME catch can - SME Baffled sump with oil return fitting - ID1000cc injectors - stock fuel pump Key to reliability in these cars is ensuring oil level is near the top full mark on dipstick and baffled sump to make sure you dont starve and spin a baring. Oil cooler to keep oil in its operating range. Most importantly, the weak stock rods dont like boost coming in hard and early, laggier options like the 3076 see full boost at 4500rpm+, as opposed to 3000rpm. All the failures I have seen were with smaller turbos like 2867's which hit full boost very early. I know people that have ran 3076's and other bigger turbos for over 30-40,000km with no issues at 14psi.
They sound cool, but i.m.o, turbo's are like the "Easy Button" for making power. I'm partial to a good N.A build myself, even more so when it's a rotary
Stroke it, add strong internals (forged crank, pistons, titanium rods), super aggressive camshafts, machined and ported head, intake, header, exhaust with no cat and minimal resonator, then retune the ECU. Probably make 130-140hp per liter, but will be obnoxious, need to run on really high grade fuel and hard to start.
With this tuner coming from a multi hour circuit racing background rather than from drag racing, I'd be curious to hear if he does anything differently when tuning for that type of usage
If you don't want to go fi or just can't afford to right now. Just go e85 with a set of headers/exhaust. You will keep up with and beat most STi's. Concidering the platform, it's a nice win. Just be happy with it.
At first i was wondering do we get a different version of the BRZ in europe because they come with 147KW/200HP from the dealer but isn't that the crankshaft power figure? So is the drivetrain loss about 30KW?
Him saying that the cars from the factory have 100 KW at the wheels was awfully suspicious. I wonder if his "stock" tune was undertuned so they could show off a bigger increase in power with the tune...
Stock BRZ horsepower figures are around 165 - 175 (125-ish KW) and that's usually with a correction factor. It seems clear this dyno isn't applying a correction factor to account for altitude above sea level which could add maybe 20kw at the most, probably less. His dyno, at his shop seeing 105kw from stock BRZ's seems perfectly legitimate, at least in my opinion.
A hub dyno reads lower and far more accurately then wheel dyno's. They are the next best thing to pulling out the engine and putting it on an engine dyno, which is where that 147kw figure comes from.
That was a disgusting amount of spray spray being ejected from his mouth. I feel like I would be drenched if I had a 5 minute conversation with him. He should hire someone to place wet floor signs behind any area he speaks. Can we get a shirt that says MCM on the back and splash zone on the front?

A guy I’m friends with on Facebook from a car group swapped his FRS. But he swapped it in a way that nobody else has so far. He used the 2AZ motor from a Scion TC and then turbo’d it. Pretty cool build. He has a page on Facebook called SRTuned if you wanna check it out and see the car. I don’t wanna post his real name here, but you could always message him and he could lead you to more build photos and so on. Last I saw he was putting down over 300hp. Not sure where he’s at now.
I love you guys, youve been at this for such a long time and I've always loved watching. You take these projects on in a laid back manner and have such a great time It makes car projects seem less scary to novice car lovers. Thanks for all you do.
Always makes me laugh when Moog just stands there nodding his head when an expert talks 😂
14:58 ah finally they're gonna grab a lunch that's not kebabs
15:01 of course not
This is so perfect for a 1994 Toyota Celica GT. I do not want to deal with spending money replacing a Turbo when it goes wrong
Depends on the original intake design. Mazda when they upgraded the RX8 intake actually bough an aftermarket design because it was that much better.
It also depends on the car. Too many factors to consider, certainly too many for an AEM type to account for and advertise big gains.
@3:09 Cundalini wants his hand back!
I saw moog’s identical twin in the blue mountains the other day
Supercharge it so you don't throw away your exhaust mods. Centrifugal supercharger will work really well and keep the NA feel of the power curve.
What other mods need be done won't it blow motor? I wana increase power on v6 3.8L what's safest mods to do? It does zero to 100 in 6 seconds but stil abit slow how can I increase abit without fkn engine lol

40hp for exhaust and tune is pretty gnar
I had my car on one of them dynos the other day and made 343hp at the wheels. Was well Happy with the result.
Exhaust sounded horrible on Dyno - like a jack hammer??
Might have something to do with the equipment they put in the driver's side tailpipe (no idea what it is but if I had to guess I'd say it measures co2/nox emissions). You can see it at around 9:00
@@m1llie_ It has nothing to do with the sensor attatched to the tailpipe. It has everything to do with the crap quality exhaust. Needs a resonator or a better overall exhaust design for it to sound nice. Currently it sounds like a straight pipe on a slow revving engine.
"bulk cow power" the ol' donut reference.
25% increase from exhaust and tune. I think I've never seen that on a na engine, ever.
Mojo shows how poor the original set up was. Mind you, the new exhaust sounds terrible.
@@glhs386 Still not as impressive as Honda. Still not reliable when you try to make decent power with stock internals.
Him saying that the car from the factory has 100 KW at the wheels was awfully suspicious.
I wonder if his "stock" tune was tampered and purposefully undertuned so they could show off a bigger increase in power with the tune...
@@ErebosGR nope. I owned one before I boosted it. Did base reading when it was stock and it was making about 100kW Factory stock.
VW passat r36 is a fantastic NA car! Had one and always made me smile when i drove it.
"Who loves the sound of a BRZ?" Me, I sure do love my NA FA20 engine!
I’ve been waiting for this. I don’t want to go turbo on my BRZ. It’s fun to drive N/A but it can use more power.
E85 is the way. Runs really well now :)
Did you just say slap on the turbo? ;)
Nineteen96 yeah except like one in every 15 service stations have e85 😭
That handshake needs some tuning XD
😂😂
supercharge it Moog and hose that STI. you still have the "PURITY" of the exhaust note... and a BOV
And the torque curve doesn’t get fucked like with a turbo
@@mitchellgustafson3662 You mean like actually making torque? Lmao
UEL Catless header, with a new overpipe and a tune, totally transforms these cars; IMHO, this is how the car should've come from the factory.

Recommend PVS at paramatta, it's where I got my turbo 86 tuned, made 280kw at the hubs on e85 11psi.
That's awesome, has it been reliable since the turbo and tune? Did you have to replace anything else?
@@mikeLOL45424 Plenty reliable, been 3000km. Running a SME Spec R kit (Supplied by PVS in the video^) which is a garret gt3076r and external wastegate.
Running:
- mantic 9000 organic HD clutch
- RacerX Oil cooler
- SME catch can
- SME Baffled sump with oil return fitting
- ID1000cc injectors
- stock fuel pump
Key to reliability in these cars is ensuring oil level is near the top full mark on dipstick and baffled sump to make sure you dont starve and spin a baring.

When is the SuperCharger going on?
They supercharged a car in one of their episodes several seasons ago and they never liked it. So they won't do one.
But its what you want to do to this one! Snail supercharge it, gets rid of the dip too!
Supercharged mine with HKS. LOVED it!!
They sound cool, but i.m.o, turbo's are like the "Easy Button" for making power.
I'm partial to a good N.A build myself, even more so when it's a rotary
What kind of headers do you recommend? 23 kw or 30 ish HP from just exhaust is actually pretty good for people who love NA
Fuck, 30hp over stock with header + header-back + tune. That's pretty banging for a 4-banger NA!
MCM: "We're gonna learn how to milk the cow of naturally aspirated purity."
Me: ahhh that's hot!
When you said you weren’t going turbo, I thought you’d be doing things like camshafts and cylinder heads rather than just exhaust and tune?
Probably doing mods that anyone could at home
My money is on a SuperCharger...
I think the emphasis is on being cheap cams and heads are pretty expensive
Nah bro they need to do actual research for that, not just slap a turbo and visit the tuner
All the companies used are Australian and not the usual companies so maybe this series is to promote local companies
I'm a simple man I get a notification for mighty car mods I stop what I'm doing and watch the video!

With this tuner coming from a multi hour circuit racing background rather than from drag racing, I'd be curious to hear if he does anything differently when tuning for that type of usage
"sounds like someone is trying to CONVINCE himself not to go turbo...." 14:20
If you don't want to go fi or just can't afford to right now. Just go e85 with a set of headers/exhaust. You will keep up with and beat most STi's. Concidering the platform, it's a nice win. Just be happy with it.
Haven’t even started show yet fellas, and surely looking forward to it!
0:13 when he’s about to leave 😂😂😂😂😂
At first i was wondering do we get a different version of the BRZ in europe because they come with 147KW/200HP from the dealer but isn't that the crankshaft power figure? So is the drivetrain loss about 30KW?
I don't understand either, the headers + tuning isn't even recovering that loss
May I cast my vote for a supercharger on this car?
12:15 Finally, Moog is convinced it's an STi, not just a WRX
