One of the most common ways to increase performance on a naturally aspirated engine is to install an exhaust header. They aren’t too expensive, and the install should be pretty easy on the miata. But how much power do they actually make? Today we’re gonna install a set of headers find out!

I think the guy was genuinely concern about the RPM (however I doubt his concern was warranted ~ still I don't know his dyno-specs.)
Ey that’s my name
@@Hope4Today9 That's a fair point. It's definitely not the style of dyno I've seen in other videos.
i just finished re-assembling my engine and I have a piston left over. From my experience building things LEGO has taught me there is always extra pieces when you finish
Hahahahaha a spare part
You're gonna end up with wayy more "spare" parts. 💥🚗⬅️
Its okay one piston less is ur weight reducing kit
They say if you forget installing something, it was probably not that important
*facepalm*
Don’t forget you can also justify it by it being 1 piece to the whole puzzle. If you add 3-4 mods that give you an extra 3-6 hp that’s not nothing. And to say you’ve modded/customized your car and made it act differently is also cool.
People forget it’s about making your car your own as well.
I was going to comment something similar I heard from a BladedAngel video. He talked about how mods add up over time, and it's not just throwing on one mod and boom, a hundred extra horses.
@@adamstreetboyzz Straight up. Mod it how you want it, but do the mods right.
The word is synergy the combined accumulation of all the mods adding up . That’s fine and ok but if you were to to get a dyno flash tune or Ecutek with headers , performance exhaust & A cool air intake u will see massive gains in HP, Torque & MPG
My wallet will disagree
I hope this series continues after the miata is “done”, it would be nice to see this done with some other inexpensive tuner cars

What do you mean 1.6 are very tough engines
He means rods
Rods can hold like 250wheel wym
Wait I thought he said it was a 94 in the last episode. Aren’t those 1.8s?
compression and rods are what matters.
Is that a 95 miata? The factory header on those has pretty good flow for a stock header. I think that's why you didn't see much of an increase.
You're not wrong. When he pulled the heat shield, I thought maybe he was wasting his time. Think he would have had better results replacing an unfortunate exhaust manifold.
You don't get any gains from headers on 1.6 or 1.8 miata. 1.8 has a great factory header. 4-2-1 collector flows nicely from factory. Cat delete and free flow muffler = win
I was just thinking that, that engine is pretty good for a stock.
@@ajsimmons1156 key words here are "heat shield"

@pizzaparkersgarage hey i saw your comment on Car throttle in their latest roast my ride video 🤟🏻

Wutang wooshi bois FTW
Boosted boiz
The original manifold was a really good design for flow, the only reason you probably saw any increase was because you removed the catalytic converter which was probably the only real restriction in the exhaust system
Good point! But also a factor, the longer primary tubes on the header scavenge better in the mid band, increasing torque through the power band.
Looks like that NA had the stock iron head swapped out with the NB 01 header, which is pretty decent. I had a 00 with iron header, swapped it out with the 01 header which I had powder coated and kept the heat shield and have the RoadsterSport mid-pipe and RS4 exhaust along with a CAI and MazdaSpeed intake camshaft. The engine really pulls above 4k and has a nice low burble when cruising around. But, when you are really going in the canyons, it's sonorous and responsive. Stuck with he 01 header so I can pass emissions testing, plus it was cheap and still better than the Iron one.
I'd really like to see some ECU tuning done at some point
I think they tried that is one episode about making it shoot flames... It's pretty limited in that episode. I think it's great that they are working on a car most people could afford and have fun with. It's most interesting to work with limitations.
Some sort of re-tune would have to be in order at some point though - All these parts, and the limited gains from the parts themselves? You could gain so much more from a re-tune that is actually mapped to take full advantage of the parts.
That is why on my L36 engine build (Holden Commodore, being Aussie and all), I have every intention of replacing my stock engine management sooner or later, even though my plans don't go beyond "mild daily-driver NA spec". Bonus - A retune with better equipment should not only gain me even more power, but actually make the engine more fuel-efficient too!
~JD
In order to pull this off you really need to go to a standalone. Miata ECUs do not lend them selves to easy tuning.
An ECU tune will usually net you more ponies than a header, CAI, and catback.
probably some piggyback would do

I had to do this when i lost a vband bolt after driving it. Next to some glowing turbos. That was fun.
I'm surprised you made as much as you did. The weather (temperature and pressure) might have accounted for the difference you saw. The stock header didn't look like a bad design (unlike a lot of the horrible cast iron headers found on many cars), plus you ditched the heat shield, which means you're losing energy from the gases which can reduce the ability to scavenge and you're increasing your air intake temperature.
Do you think temperature tape would help?
For real that was the most headerish stock manifold I've seen in a minute
@@oceanwaves83 Agreed, the factory piece was pretty good. With iron log manifolds the gains would be greater.

Den I//Noble Russkie who cares my car bypasses the cat and I daily
My tinnitus says otherwise.
Older vid, but good info and fun. The stock Mazda part looks really great. Typical engine with log style irons can get 10% gains with long tubes.
If you're looking for a few ponies, get rid of that heat soaking under hood air filter. Get your stock box back and use a KnN drop in. Sucking in hot under hood air causes your PCM to pull timing to prevent knock. Also, run a 160 thermostat if your car won't throw a CEL, otherwise a 170 will net you a few ponies as well.
I always thought it was weird that those are called cold air intakes when really they are hot air intakes.

I went with BBK Short Headers on my 2012 Mustang and they really improved daily driving enjoyment in low-mid torque. There was MAYBE some peak HP gains, but torque was noticeably improved. Plus they deepened the exhaust tone, bolted to the stock cats, and were relatively cheap. I very much doubt long-tube Headers gain much peak HP at all, and they typically kill low-mid power.

Wow, this takes me back to 1968 when I bought a Datsun 2000 roadster that had 135 hp stock. I was stationed at Edwards air force base and we had unlimited space to run flat out. I was in the army and one of the civilian engineers (MIT) had a new Porsche 912 targa and we would race in the desert . I could always beat him on top speed (135 mph) but cornering I couldn't keep up. I decided to look into speed equipment and even being a So Cal boy in 1968 Datsun was like what? Luckily I went to Iskendarian looking for parts who sent be to Pete Brock who had an operation sponsored by the Datsun factory to develop racing cars and parts and to support independents like me too go fast in Datsuns ! I bought the factory racing cam, side draft webbers ,factor racing headers and to many small items to mention. I swapped out the stock 560-14" wheels and tires for Minilite magnesium wheels with Goodyear Blu-streak racing tires. The Porsche guy was in shock when we had a chance to go again as my funny little Japanese Datsun with north of 200 HP could go north of 160 mph and corner as good or better than the Porsche! I didn't find out until years later how famous Pete Brock was! All of the increased intake, and hotter spark....needed the less restrictive exhaust.

In my opinion you could tell by the looks of the stock Mazda exhaust header that the after market header was not going to give you much more power. Replacing a stock cast iron header is one thing but the stock Mazda header was a tube header and looked pretty sweet.
honestly, the Miata header is fairly well made for a factory engine, the moment I saw it it was quite clear that you would not gain much, but as you said it is a quick and cheap upgrade that looks super nice and adds a little bit, so why not? I think you made a good decision.
Only if the flange is really thick and you don't get exhaust leaks.
@Darth Giggity Had leaks for years on my 1967 pontiac, took it in to old timer guy, he planed the head and the header, and used no gasket, been on there for 22 years now and not leaked! So I'm going with thick flanges.
Thanks, I came here to say this, but I knew someone would have already pointed it out.
Now my ford 390 which has a rectangular manifold on each side will absolutely get.... dang ol ten horsepower for sure with headers.
The stock header looked REALLY good. The headers also replaced the midpipe so he now is running catless. I'm not sure the headers themselves did a thing.
was going to say the same thing mazda forked him on that one, the stock manifold looked pretty well set up.
Do an aftermarket ECU episode people always claim you need a retune to make intake and exhaust mods work!
rep'd
as a guy who works with carbs and manual distributor timing, you do. that timing could probably be advanced and make even more hp. stock timing on most older cars is retarded waaaay back. some adjustable cam gears to advance the stock cam about 4 degrees would help too.
You need a new tune without it ( fuel injection of course) your car would not run well
doesn't this prove it though? all these shiny parts and almost xero gain over stock power. Of course it needs a tune.
I also swear I didn't cheat 3.5-4 ponies was not bad. It's an improvement overall and simply just taking the time to put some love in your ride is good enough for me. It would have been neat to see a full stock exhaust vs the catback system and header. Plus there's always the option of a hi-flow cat as well.
The MOST important thing to do when you change the airflow of any vehicle is to TUNE IT. Just adding headers, exhaust, and intake arent really going to gain you anything without a tune.
Yep. You may be getting more air in but not much point without telling the engine it can now also spray in more fuel aswel
Depends on the year and complexity of the ECU as well. Older setups can make gains without fine tuning, but youll allways make the most of what you do with a little fiddling.
Yep agreed. The Miata has a new engine map and will need to be tuned to reflect that
Nah, maf and o2 sensors will adapt. The header just straight up didnt make any power.
They did need to tune the car because the header & the intake were changed from the factory configuration. They really should have put a real CAI on. If they tuned the car with that setup, it would have probably gained 5-7 hp realistically.

What Miata’s only 100hp +?? I though it is faster than my stock ek9
Racing Beat header, Flyin' Miata full exhaust, and Flyin' Miata light flywheel made my '01 Miata want to rev SO much more. So even if it doesn't make a lot more power, freeing it up makes a world of difference.

I think the factory headers have a good flow so that's why you don't gain that much
I think factory intake had better flow than this Hot Air Intake :D
Would assume they've pretty much optimized the original ones for the stock engine to begin with. But i guess this could be called a success since there was no reduction in power with the new headers. Unless low end torque suffered making it worse to drive in normal conditions. I would call this plain dumb if you have to spend $400 and a half day for basically nothing, or possibly making it worse. Denying that this wasn't worth it is just human nature to make you'r self feel a little less of a fool.
More usable mid range power and a higher rev..it’s not all about peak hp numbers kiddo..proof positive as to how learning how to read a dyno graph would be very beneficial 😂
this is true, however if you take the e46 330i, those headers are stamped steel and are horibly restrictive. headers see a claimed 25 hp increase.
Yeah how much power you gain with headers heavily depends on the stock manifold
Did you tune it? I feel like changing hardware without a tune is almost pointless
i think it's OBD1
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe that's the next episode "Is tuning your car worth it?"
You can't tune the standard mazda ecus.
Megasquirt is the answer, doesnt look lien they tuned it. I'm sure the next 10 ponies are hiding there
You don't have to tune it to get gains but they will be small and a tune will compound them. I would say the intake and the rest of the exhaust has already helped a bit. I would say starting stock at 100hp at the hubs and now 107hp is a good gain from better flow with no tune
The stock manifold looked to flow pretty well honestly, if you put headers and exhaust on something like my 96 civic there would probably be pretty noticeable gains due to the horribly flowing exhaust on it 🤷🏼♂️
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! You are like 3 steps ahead of my Miata. HAHA.
But how is your steering rack?
@@bagelbandit6076 its a nice rack! LOL Rack is good. FINALLY have an autocross on the schedule so we will see how she holds up. :)
I would call this Header swap more like 3 steps Behind. Waste of time and money for no gain, you know he probably lost some low end torque
@@slingbart705 but like low end torque is only gonna matter in first gear. When do torque and horsepower matter? When you’re using it. Therefore, after the first 1.5 seconds you’ll be in the mid to upper range and be making a mo powa babeh
With that motor there's no way you'll make 10hp to the wheel, maybe crank with a tune...
Now do a cat delete!😃👍👌
Can I just say Money pit, hi low, and up to speed are my favorite series on this channel and how I’ve learned so much about cars on this channel and watching zack pimp out The Miata and how this channel has Such a fun audience and I love all the hosts for all the different series but I do be missing Science garage and I still want an up to speed on James dad
It sounds way better with the new header and that was worth it to me. Finding a few more horses in the pen is always a bonus! Great video, good job!
I love finding old videos that I didn't need at the time. But can now look back and reference. Thanks guys!
Though I’ll never stop loving James the most, you’re by far my #2 donut follow.

Wouldn't you need to have the ECU tuned for your engine to really take advantage of the extra airflow?
Yup 😁 your stock computer can only do so much
@@johnj05 Yeah but by the look of the stock manifold which actually looks closer to a stock header I would say the engine isn't ingesting enough air to really see any gain with a header. Also the header tubes didn't look much bigger than the factory. I had a 81 camaro with a bolt on 350 I bought that had 2 1/4 inch tubing exhaust. When I switched to dual 2 1/2 with race mufflers you could feel a big increase, probably around 15 to 20 horse difference because the smaller tubing was restricting the engine. Now if this miata had cams then you would notice a big increase maybe over the stock manifold.
@@Chevymonster203 This is Completely unrelated to anything on this post but your comment about the Camaro with a 350 reminded me of an idea I've been kicking around. So I've got a 2013 Camaro LS, its got a completely stock LFX v6 atm. My current plans are to mod the v6 a little bit for some fun but I've also tossed around the idea of just putting a v8 in it eventually. Now I know the obvious choice if I go that route would be to get a modern LS engine like maybe an LS7 or rebuilding a cheap LSX. I do however have access to an old small block 350 thats been sitting in a pickup since forever. Do any of you guys think putting an old school 350 in a modern Camaro would be in any way an upgrade from the current v6 that makes almost as much power? Would it be a waste of time to put anything but a modern engine in, or would it even be possible to run an old school carborated engine in it? I just wondered what some of you guys might think given the opportunity of just having one near by.
@@johnathankozloff212 Interesting question, if you want carburation I would dropping a 4.8 or 5.3 truck motor with a mild cam. They are relatively easy to find from junkyards and they respond well to cam replacement. You can throw on a single plate intake with a single carb lile a 750. I think throwing in a old 350 would be back tracking plus you would need to swap engine mounts and get a trans adapter. Stick with a good 4.8, can always throw nitrous or boost at it later on and it will do it no problem.
@@johnathankozloff212 instead of the very old 350 you should do a 350 vortec they are super easy too work on and extremely moddable. Putting a cam in that would also make a big difference and speaking of headers "shorty headers" make a big difference too. Put those headers on I heard you can make a 15 hp difference as long you got proper exhaust flow for example 2 1/2 in y pipe and outlet 3 in and rest of the exhaust 3 in. Including catalytic converter and muffler.
Q : Are headers worth it?
A : Depends on what platform and your pain tolerance levels!
the factory one was also header type, not an old cast iron manifold
Sacrificing low end and mid range for top end torque means the car is, slower on the road for 90% of situations.
I'm gonna quote Ken Miles in Ford vs Ferrari film "You have to drive her like a sport car. If you drive her like a school teacher, she'll clog up"
Or it means you get to rev higher and press the pedal harder for more situations
@Green Giant Oh man I needed to look for it but, magnificent:
"For those who haven't heard of this, the idea of the Italian tune up is to run your engine under full throttle and full load for an extended period. The claim is that it burns out deposits in the combustion chamber, the injectors and the exhaust system. The name comes from Ferrari, whose mechanics took customer cars out onto the racetrack for a few hot laps at the end of which, the cars reportedly performed better"
bign3ck He said he gained mid and upper range torque. Low end torque loss mostly affects the motor if you are smashing the car from the get-go. Just rev the motor higher in 1st. Casual driving shouldn't be affected.
And this is why he is a complete dumbass, unless he drives his car around at redline all day!
It also appears as though he has removed one catalytic converter, but I can't be sure.
I guess changing the headers might make more of a difference in other cars. The stock ones seemed like they were pretty decent.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Very nice factory exhaust manifold.
Stock exhaust systems are designed to have zero back pressure at stock power so there really is no added performance until you are flowing more air than stock.

I laughed way too hard at this. Reminds me when I worked on my 01 Mazda protoge. Oh a transmission change should take a couple days. 6 months later 😂😑
That’s almost a 4% increase, and that adds up with other mods. It only seems insignificant cause it’s a small motor, my 6.0 vortec, 4% is almost 15 hp.
zit depends on what you are driving and what you are expecting....I was happy I did it with my old 99 TL 3.2 V6 Vtec. it sounded great and I also had an Ebay air intake with a k&n filter. OEM style cat, 2" resonator then Y piped to a 2.25" straight pipes to rear bumper with chrome tips. Give it better response a better mid to high rpm power and I was really glad I did it. I should do a j swap civic or integra
Should I swap the headers on my ‘14 v6? It’s stock but handles everything I throw at it perfectly. Only thing I can’t do is beat supercars 😢
@@PXRTYPXN444 I would recommend it on the V6. it sounds great and the gains are fun
@@boostjunkie2320 bettt and what will I need to tune the car so I can run them?
@@PXRTYPXN444 You don't need a tune to run them unless you are running FBO and looking for max power

"you gotta justify the stuff somehow"-a wise man 2020
I liked the math to get 4 HP.
I put short tube headers on my 2007 Cadillac Escalade 6.2l I gained 3 horse power and 5 lbs of torque. Not to mention I also have a afe air intake system that I installed before the headers that added 2 horse power and 3 lbs of torque. It really all depends on what you want to consider if it’s worth it. Mines a daily driver and pulls the 7k lbs boat on the weekends. So that little gain I got from those 2 installs really helped with the low end torque and the acceleration and at the gas pump. It’s a struggle keeping the 6k beast fuel efficient.
"you just have to justify the costs.." every time
Tell that to congress and our army
Nathan Brame you just had to bruh
when you change something like intake\exhaust , you have adjust the fuel mixture....and then, maybe, you can have those +5hp
Pedro Fidalgo yup, probably running a little lean after all of the intake and exhaust mods.
Why? That's not even a tuned exhaust. WTF even is this video? It's a joke, right?
I think it’s worth it! Little things like that with other mods will add up together and yah the look, sound and experience is also worth it!
Installing headers on my daily lancer gives me some much needed torque and lightens her up a little as well as looking better, So fully worth it in my eyes!
