Thank you for this beautiful talk!! I'm a Yoga Teacher and constantly feel the challenge of this that you've talked about - at least I'm able to keep going deeper in my own practice.
The VERY Loud hearing aid commercial in the middle of the quiet meditation part was... hysterical. Yo. If you're reading this, may the light and love of the creator fill you always. Namaste.
I think the beginning of this video where you talked about focusing on the stretch in the beginning and looking at your neighbours was so relatable as to where I am now in yoga. Been going to yoga classes for about a year now and just recently I've realised the meaning behind it being more than just stretch excerices. It's a way of life that's adaptable in so many situations simply because of the breathing and getting in touch with your state of mind. I used to always take the elevator up to my apartment on the fifth floor. It's a lot of stairs and can seem tiring to go all the way up. But one day I realised that if I'm just aware of my breathing and slow down I can make it all the way up the stairs without being sweaty and out of breath. In this particular situation I realised that I stress up the stairs for no reason at all and that I can stress unnecessarily in many other situations like when I'm going somewhere or when I'm doing my job, cleaning the house or just about anything. It's such a great tool to slow down and really think about what you're doing and how you're doing it. Yoga has changed my life for the better and I know it will continue doing so the more I practice it.
Anyone holding or going to a so-called "yoga class" is for sure doing something totally unethical. Real Yoga is all about the Hindu religion and taught by Hindus.
Loved the way you spoke. Very engaging and interesting, which with TED talks can be really hit and miss. I hope you do more talks, you have a gift of teaching.
Yogananda wrote in Autobiography of a Yogi (original version), “Hatha is useful and produces spectacular physical results, but this branch of yoga is little used by yogis bent on spiritual liberation.”
You speak so well! I love how passionate you are.. very influencing! Yoga is so important and a reason why I created a UA-cam to help others create their own at home practice :)

Some are under the impression that yoga has something to do with religion, specifically Hindu religion and deities and scriptures. Not at all. Yoga is a science based on a deep understanding of the body and mind. In fact I feel those who we know as rishis could easily be called scientists. I would go further to say that those who think religion, any religion, which are basically beliefs, is indispensable, should probably not do yoga. Because yoga practised correctly puts yourself in a state of mind where there are no thoughts, which includes beliefs.
Lol..yoga is the foundation pillar of Hinduism..yes all hindu rishis were scientists..that's why we call them brahmans (one who is bestowed with knowledge).. PPL who teach yoga and mathematics and worship in temples were same exact ppl
Your reply manoj is so typical of the new-age thoughtless dogma. Note you express your beliefs and then deny belief! All one needs to do is look up the words "Sanskrit" and "Yoga." If you then deny the Hindu connection, you are simply being dishonest. The Hindu/Yoga religion is very scientific!
@@152manoj Wow have fooled yourself. Have you opened any reference material dictionary, etc.? How about books on comparative religions? How about any books on Hinduism. If you did the least bit of research you will find the inseparable Hindu/Yoga connection. Of course, I agree about Christianity but that has nothing to do with Hindu/Yoga religious science.

Nice....but Svaadhyaaya means study of the scriptures and NOT building awareness of mind and body. That is where the last three steps come in...dhaarana, dhyaana, and samaadhi come in. This is what Wikipedia says Svādhyāya (Devanagari: स्वाध्याय) is a Sanskrit term which means self-study and especially the recitation of the Vedas and other sacred texts. It is also a broader concept with several meanings. In various schools of Hinduism, Svadhyaya is a Niyama (virtuous observance) connoting introspection and "study of self".
Interesting but you miss the point: Real Yoga is all about the Hindu religion, taught by Hindus and not for a fee. The purpose of Svadhyaya is to connect to a Hindu Deity!
