This is a great review because despite your preference for the Nemo Hornet, you absolutely sold me on the Big Agnes Tiger Wall. I'm looking for a tent that I can use on my solo ventures as well as when my partner and I do a section of the PCT with my family in August. I certainly can deal with a bit less headroom (I usually bivy) but I think that realistically it's best to get the tent that provides us most space to coexist. Thanks for helping me make this decision, I'll try to follow back up once we use it together.

    Great review, thank you.
I have had both and I now just use a Nemo Hornet 2p Regular (not Elite). The Elite and Big Agnes Platnium are just too thin to be realistic. I believe they were really just in a weight race with each other and lost site of practicality.

I have the original Tiger Wall 2 for 7 years now. I am going to retire it after this summer. I am going to get the new Tiger Wall. I love my tent! The only drawback with these ultra-light tents is that thy are pretty delicate compared to tents we used in the past. We ask for ultra-light and they make it, but it is not as durable as previous generations of tents

My Tiger Wall Platinum has been performing well for 4 seasons now and it’s rather good. I’ve been though a few storms with no issues. As far as I’m concerned the privacy it provides is fine. So far no holes, but I’m pretty careful with my gear.

Hey Dan, I own the Tigerwall 2P Platinum. I absolutely love it. The weight for space is in the sweet spot for me. As for the larger footprint size, its not really an issue for me as I've been using it at dedicated campsites and platforms in Australia. The 2 large vestibules are great, I use one for gear and one for cooking. Keep the vids coming. Im a bit of a gear nerd also and always keep up & to see what's new!

I do not have these ultra light tents, but I have a NEMO Aurora 3p for car camping+maybe 1-night hiking with my partner. The cutout showing at 5:40 has been fine for me, or it may be because the Aurora is not made of Nylon. I was also skeptical at first, but anyhow, the cutout on my Aurora is not leaking after a night of thunderstorms (the rain was loud enough that we had to use an ear plug to sleep). Instead, the cutout + the vent on top made the fly no condensation the entire night. My partner said she is more comfortable sleeping in this tent because the airflow is much better, and there is no stuffy feeling.

Nemo tents are so claustrophobic, imo. I even went with the Super Alloy over the Tiger Wall for the space. Packaged weight is only 2 lb 8 oz if you mod with Dyneema guylines & UL stakes.
Wish they made a premium version like this to keep up with the competition though.

I personally wouldn’t consider the Nemo if I ever intended to sleep 2 people. For 1person they both look fine.
I have a Durston 1P. It’s the same weight, and less delicate(because it uses trekking poles). It’s not as tricky to set up properly as most trekking pole tents. It’s really nice if you can find one. Unfortunately, they are having supply problems and are sold out.

The Nemo side pockets are at your hip where there is already very little space. The BA side pockets are near your head where there is more space and it is easier to see what's there. The overhead pocket is bigger in the BA, but the Nemo does have the defuser for your head lamp. For two people the BA wins. For 1 person, I think it's more of a style choice. Personally, I like the BA colors better. My wife and I have a regular 2P Hornet and a 3P Tiger Wall Platinum. Had I known how much bigger the 2P Tiger Wall is, we probably would have gone with the 2P instead of the 3P.

I have put that tent through a lot of hiking miles and nights on trail in a bunch of diferent weather situations (snow, hail, torential rain and wind, blazing heat and sun light, etc. etc.) and 3 years later it still seems to be in "brand new" condition. For cold weather and just one person for camping, I would choose the Nemo ( Mine is Hornet Elite 2 ) . In fact I have both brand of Tent and I just found that for cold winder camping and it was very cold all night for only person inside for Big Agnes ( Mine is Copper UL2 ) . However for Nemo, it is a much better situation as it warm up inside much easier. That is the reason I buy the Nemo for lighter weight and smaller inside space for easier to keep warmer temperature inside during the Winder time.

Not sure why the Hornet is the only Nemo tent that seems to end up being discussed. I've got a Dagger 2P which I love. It has huge vestibules, more than enough head room for two tall people, and it holds up great in rough weather. I think both of these tents are great if you need a freestanding or semi-freestanding tent.
I use trekking pole tents about 95% of my trips, but I still have a Terra Nova Solar Photon 2 semi-freestanding tent for some trips, like paddling and camping on stony islands.
Great tent for one, or with a dog, BARELY managable to squeeze in 2 persons who are very fond of each other in it, I definetily wouldn't recommend it.
But I just can't justify using money on a tent that will barely be used more than a single night per year, so it will have to do.
My X-mid and Z-packs tents are getting a lot of use, so I CAN justify getting another trekking pole tent, but I don't need any at this point.

This is such a Ford vs Chevy debate. (^_^) I've been using the Nemo Hornet 2P since the original came out. I've since added the Elite and a Z-Packs Duplex to the backpacking family.
Honestly, I still prefer the original Hornet as the yellow in the morning is REALLY bright. My younger son, who is an early bird LOVES the yellow color. Older son likes the z-packs because he says it sets up so much easier. We've been in some serious squalls in all these tents and frankly, they all work just fine as long as you pitch them tight.
In practical use, I didn't really feel any difference between the Elite and the standard Hornet in my pack. All my stuff is light and the handful of ounces isn't really enough to make a difference to me.
Have a friend with the BA Tiger Wall, and he's had trouble at times finding a place to pitch. The width of the vestibule combined with no adjustments makes it harder to get the fly tight on uneven ground. Even if your tent body is on flat, if the vestibule has to go up or down more than a couple inches, you can find getting that taught fly difficult. He ended up adding an adjustable cord to the vestibule just to allow for uneven ground.
In any case, these tents all work much better as a larger 1-person than trying to squeeze 2 in.

I have the strato 2p and love it. It is my all time favorite 2p tent. My wife and dog and me have camped in it together. My lab curled up at the end of her feet. She is 5'3" and I am 6'3" and it was tight but doable. Without the dog there is plenty of room.

I have been trying to find one semi or full freestanding tent option to add to my trekking pole tent collection. Watching your tent videos helps. At 5'2", the fully extended poles of the BA are unwieldy for me and I smack every overhead tree surrounding the tent site.
With ultrathin 7D tent walls, laying poles down on tent walls without accidentally snagging or dragging the fabric made me nervous about rips or punctures. I ended up with the BA Scout2 platinum.
Since the BA 7d material needs to avoid direct sunlight this could make the Nemo a little more attractive if they don't have the same warning as well. As far as privacy, I change all the time in my BA S2 and your can't really see anything but smudged outlines and that is only a single 7D wall. Bottom line is if you don't take care of your gear this is not the tent for you.
At some point if I want to base camp I am going to have to pick a tent, because I need my trekking poles. These were two excellent choice for comparisons and appreciated the side by side, even if I still can't decide.😂

I don’t know about you Dan, but after having my Tiger Wall for a few years now, I have had all kinds of trouble always getting the fly zipper hung up on the fabric when I’m trying to get out of the tent. Makes it very problematic in the morning when I have to pee!

It sounds like if you genuinely have two (2) backpackers, Big Agnes over Nemo unless they are smaller than average or if the +1 is a dog.
That said, I’m a Duplex guy… not UL but light as I’ll also use the freestanding poles with it too.

I really want to compare Nemo with the new Sea to Summit Alto. The Nemo has such a lovely small footprint (great for the scrubby Australian bush), but it has a large cutout form the fly which isn’t great for the July/August torrential rain. S2S looks good but there aren’t great online reviews.

Just put my money down for the Hornet coming from Tarptent Moment. The BA is a sweet tent but just too much footprint to find space for. At times my Moment barely fits, if you can imagine that. Looking forward to a little more space as I have two weeks instead of two days coming up and I think I'll improve my mental health with the Hornet providing less condensation and a little more room.

    • @dkeener13
      @dkeener13 3 роки тому

the footprint of the actual tents is the same, it's just the stake-out points for the much roomier vestibules are farther out on the tiger wall. which is something you can fudge around at a smaller site if you need to.

Dan I haven’t even finished watching it but thank you for this! I went with the Nemo Hornet elite because I wanted the lightest tent on the market that was double wall, not dyneema, and free standing. I have been running it for a little while now but have been wondering if the Big Agnes tiger wall or even the copper spur is worth the extra space for the weight penalty as I am a bigger guy and feel packed into that Nemo Hornet. Not disliking it by any means but always exploring other options and curiosity. At the end of the day for me it’s about weight unless it absolutely doesn’t work for me.
Edit: One thing I do worry about in the Nemo is rain with that vestibule not going all the way down to the ground and not fully covering the tent body, haven’t experienced any weather in it yet.

    • @savoie72
      @savoie72 2 роки тому +1

I have the Nemo Hornet Elite as well. I have had it for a few years now and have had it in some pretty rough weather. I have never had an issue with my gear getting wet under the vestibule. Just make sure if it is going to rain you tighten the rainfly good and snug. If you don't the nylon will sag when once it gets soaked and that could potentially leave you with wet gear under the fly.
