    Bought this tent 2 months ago and have used it twice on Boy Scout weekend camp outs. One weekend temp was 27 degrees. If you open the door zipper from the top just a bit you get a vent. I bought this because it’s lite weight. Getting older and don’t want to carry a lot of weight.

    I know I'm late to the game here, but the mini bungees someone suggested below worked nicely for me. I used a tyvek ground sheet you can get from home depot and cut to your footprint size, very light and very durable to save your $400 tent. I was rained on the first time I used it and not a drop inside. Sweating wasn't an issue, nor was the rain as long as I kept the rain fly properly staked out.

    This is the best SINGLE person tent I could find. Yes, it’s a two person, but with just me, there’s tons of space for all of my gear while doing long backpack trips. It’s exceptional!!!

    Thanks for the honest review Luke. I am slowly getting into bicycle touring and camping and one off the guys I watch recommended this tent. I love and appreciate the advice from these guys on bikes, trails, and many other things to do with bicycle touring but outdoor gear is strictly The Outdoor Gear Review. I am constantly telling my wife as I see some of their touring and camping videos that if they had watched Luke, they would not have made that mistake or they would have been warmer, ect. I plan on watching again all the your videos that feature this tent. learn as much as possible before I make my purchase. I purchased a four season tent, the Snugpack Scorpian 3 as a result of your videos and used it in South Dakota, and Wyoming and yes I was snowed on. The tent was great and we had a wonderful time. Now for summer I am wanting and needing a little lighter and more breathable tent and I think the Big Agnes Tiger Wall will work. Thanks so much for what you do.

    Interesting that you speak of the guy lines. I'm a section hiker in SoCal. About 3 weeks ago I was in warner springs, part of the pct. A hiker had this tent and said that she liked it but one of her guy lines broke in a windy night. SoCal can have a lot of wind. She wasn't sure what she was going to do because it affected the stability of the tent. I like BA but chose a REI qd2 instead. It's a little heavier but I've had it on Mt San Jacinto in 60 mile an hour wind gust and it held very well. Had it for a couple of years. Thank you.

    I purchased this tent for 300.00 at REI. My only complaint is the rain fly zipper when wet as Luke addressed. I also changed the tie outs. For the money it’s great and it’s enabled me to backpack solo. I am now using a Duplex so I may end up selling it or giving it to my daughter. I only changed tents to drop more weight because of my old beat up body. If I was younger I would have kept it , it a great little tent. It’s kept me safe and dry in some terrible White Mountains of NH weather.

    Thanks for another good review Luke. I've been looking at this tent, as well as an MSR Hubba Hubba. The Tiger wall is definitely lighter, but it's VERY thin material too. Think I might pay the weight penalty to have a tent with slightly thicker material for the sake of longevity. I'm not a mile-pounding thru hiker, but I am trying to transition to carrying less weight on my "weekend warrior" packing trips. The high quality ultralight stuff commands a pretty stiff price tag though. Good job brother!

    As to the guy lines. I am currently using the MSR Mutha Hubba and the Hubba Hubba. They also are short in that department. I have had to purchase string and pre-cut lengths to attach to the fly to get around this problem.

    If the tent was sewn in a darker colour it would be interesting, not in this. It is much easier to sleep if it is darker inside the tent.

    I think at 5:15, the issue is site selection, rather than the short pre-cut guy lines. Second, at the foot end and the doors, taller stakes (7") would work better to keep the rain fly higher off the tent body. As for cutting your own guy lines, I think bringing along some cord to act as "extensions" when needed is an wiser option. I've seen others add lineloc adjusters and shock cord--unnecessary. That said, your review was very helpful. I got my Tiger Wall and am happy with it.

    I never had a problem simply stuffing the tent into the sack. Fit just fine. I've never even tried rolling it up. I do agree with the zipper problem. Got it caught many times before I learned how to do it just right. Still, you shouldn't need a special technique to open and close a friggin zipper.

    How do you say this tent compares to the Nemo Hornet 2P? Or for that price, should one just save up and pay a bit more for the Zpacks Duplex?

    • @JJ-mf8ru
      @JJ-mf8ru 5 років тому +2

      If you can't wait and save up for the Duplex, I'd say get the Tiger Wall. It has more interior volume because the side walls are vertical. Those "volumizer" struts on the new Nemo do add volume but not as much as the Tiger Wall's crossbar. The Tiger Wall doesn't make me feel claustrophobic.

    Nice video. I just picked up a Copper Spur HV UL1 and I can't quite figure out how this bigger tent can have the identical packed weight as that one (2 lbs 8 oz, according to Big Agnes' specs). Retail on the two models is only about $20 apart as well. I am very tight on space though so really need the lower volume packed size of the Copper Spur. But if not for that I'd be ordering a Tiger Wall UL2 instead. Nice to see a review from a person who has actually used it extensively.

    I don't understand why other tent companies haven't followed Hilleberg's lead in attaching the tent to the inside of the rain fly. This way, if you're erecting the tent in bad, wet weather, you don't get the inside of the tent wet. Everything goes up as one and you have rain protection on the get-go.

    Good review! I've looked at this one hard for long distance backpacking. But ultimately can't buy it because of the color- I hate brightly colored tents! Other reviewers complained about the fly blocking the door when rolled up. Did you notice that? (For example at 2:24 )

    • @nunyabidness1972
      @nunyabidness1972 6 років тому +4

      I agree with the bright color. It's not just tents either- a lot of backpacking gear is ridiculously bright colored these days: packs, tents, shoes, etc. all in clown-nightmare colors. I wish manufacturers would offer more color choices on their products, for those of us not trying to use it as a location beacon for satellites;-)

    The Nemo Hornet is cheaper and lighter than this tent (at the time this video was posted). I don't know why he kept saying this tent had no competitor. That's just not true.

    • @AndyAdventuring
      @AndyAdventuring 4 роки тому

      He also says Nemo tents sag. I own two Nemo tents (Hornet and Dagger) and they are the two most rock solid tents I've ever owned -- especially the Dagger. I've put the Dagger through nasty wind and rainstorms with other people's tents collapsing and mine standing still like a rock.
      This review is fishy AF.

  • @BacktotheOutdoors

    Question - The reviews of this and the copper spur series are littered with complaints about excessive condensation due to a lack of a vent in the rain fly. Any comments there? I was ready to buy the CS platinum 3p tent until I saw the sheer number of bad reviews mentioning this same issue.

    • @spartanjack175
      @spartanjack175 5 років тому

      I own the tiger wall and have used it on a couple of wet nights. There isn't a vent in the fly, which definitely would increase condensation over some other tents. However there's a wide storm flap and the vestibule doors can zip down from the top and connect to the tent peg at the bottom, so you can partially unzip the vestibule at the top or bottom and keep it stretched out. That seemed to help a bit with the condensation.
      Besides that and the fixed guylines it's a great tent so far.

      I get your point but when people find out how much a made in the USA tent cost many complain. I own this tent and a Zpacks Duplext. The Duplex is made in Florida and since I purchased my Tiger Wall on sale my Duplex cost me over twice the amount. Made in America is great but you have to be willing to pay up. I am.

    At what point do you close the velcro rain guard flaps (over the door zipper)? Is it done before or after you're inside the tent? Seems awkward either way.

  • @wanderingaloudwithmark3057

    @TheOutdoorGearReview I noticed that the vestibule doors, both left and right stake separately to the ground via the guy lines. Is this a bother when you open one side to enter or exit the tent.

  • @bavarian11788
    @bavarian11788 6 років тому +1

    I wouldn’t wanna have to unhook the vestibule door from the stakes to get out. None of that makes sense to me. How would you do that when inside the tent going out?
    Also the ventilation. I just do not understand why there is absolutely none.

    • @nunyabidness1972
      @nunyabidness1972 6 років тому +1

      An excellent point sir! A ventilated fly is very important to combat condensation issues in very rainy or humid conditions. I thought the older Copper Spur tents had fly vents, but I guess they dropped them for this model. That's a shame!

    • @13squier
      @13squier 6 років тому

      I think the bigger problem than condensation is the way silnylon absorbs water. So not only does it get wet but then you have to carry that water weight around and your 3 pound tent is more like 4. That's why I would seriously consider dropping the $630 on a ZPacks Duplex. Dyneema fabric is inherently waterproof and does not absorb water like silnylon, crucial on the East Coast where it is always wet.

    Hello Luke. Been watching review videos and yours in my humble opinion are the very best. If more people would watch them they would be prepared well for their hiking and camping excursions and better prepared for emergencies. My question is the bathtub floor on some tents. Are they attached to the tent wall so the tent is sealed from bugs? Just like NC we have ticks here in Tennessee and I try to keep away from them.

    Hi Luke ! Thanks for the review. I considered the Big agnes before getting a light weight tent but went with the msr hubba hubba nx. It looks very similar. Possibly a tad heavier with 1,6 kg (with additional ground sheet) and is pretty good. It would be interesting is you could give your opinion about it to compare it with other tents. What i like with it is that it's free standing, i've set it up on a blueberry patch (because i had no other options) or on a rock ground where the pegs would just not work.
    Thanks for the videos. :)

    Hi Luke. Great review! I have a general question. I have a great Eureka, 3 season Timberline 4 person tent that I love (I'm 6'5, 270 lbs, so a big tent is nice.
    Some years ago, my best buddy and I camped in 10°-14°F nightime lows in Michigan's U.P. We aren't wimps, but the old girl let a lot of wind in and keeping warm enough to sleep was kinda tough.
    What could I do to insulate this thing a little? Could you use a high quality polyester tarp over the top and secure it to the ground around it's perimeter to try trapping some air?
    I'm gonna try it next winter. Don't know how the old trappers and lumberjacks made it in those days!
    Oh yeah, the beer froze solid! Had to carry it all the way back home to thaw :-(

    Luke, good information. I have 2 questions for you. 1) I know that ultraliter's like to refer to the weight when discussing their gear load out, which is all well and good; and I understand the concept, but, know one that I've seen on UA-cam or other forums discusses volume. They all seem to get hung up on weight. One could load a brick that takes up little volume in a pack but weighs a lot, whereas, on could put and overstuffed pillow in the pack which weighs next to nothing, but have no room for anything else. I would like to see a discussion debating the trade offs between weight vs volume.
    2nd question, have you had, in all your equipment purchases and/or donations the opportunity to use the Zpacks Duplex tent? Reading the specs, the test sound intriguing. It comes in at 21oz, is a 2 person, 3 season single walled tent. Part of the weight savings is that it does not include the steaks or poles. They assume that you will be using Trekking poles and these may be used with the tent. As for the steaks, I am unsure why they do not include those in the basic package. You could make your own from sticks you find at camp, but as you an experience backpacker can attest, when you are in a rush to avoid a storm, finding and carving wood steaks is not something you may have the luxury to do; and if you you arrive at camp in the dark, finding wood and carving tent steaks is not something most would want to take the time to do.
    But that aside, even if you include tent steaks, the weight would be less then 2LBS.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks and always - Strength and Honor.

    So my nemo soaking water like crazy is not a general ultralight tents problem, but mostly a nemo problem? Anyhow, this tent sounded too good till you mentioned the non-adjustable cords.

    Thanks for the review, Luke! But $400 for an Asian sweatshop-made tent? No thanks! I'll stick to my Tarptent Double Rainbow that's made in Seattle and costs $120 less for nearly identical specs. Keep up the great work but maybe include reviews of cottage-made equipment. It's usually much better and it's made in the US.

    • @dukesilvergold
      @dukesilvergold 6 років тому

      You do understand when you buy an "Asian sweatshop-made tent", you are helping someone put food on the table and the kids get to sleep with full stomach that night, assuming they are indeed miserably working in that sweatshop; Yes I mean the workers inside that sweatshop. There goes your moral supremacy. Fortunately not everyone is as ignorant and stereotyped as you are, otherwise the same people inside that sweatshop may starve, although I suspect that many are probably living in no less condition than the people in Alabama or Mississippi. Keep in mind that as long as no one is slaved against their free will, it doesn't matter how much sweat has been thrown into or how much grease that tycoon has scooped up. Imagine the rest of the word will only buy things made in their own countries, like you proudly would prefer to buy things made in the US - millions of American workers will lose their jobs. Open your mind, learn the basic economics, and don't lock your heart, Mr. Lockhart!

    Awesome review as always luke... I hope you thoroughly enjoyed Maine...
    I was wondering if you have reviewed the marmot tungsten 3 person tent (pretty budget friendly) ... and if not if you would consider doing so. I feel like it's a great entry point for quality but affordable 3 season tent.
    Keep it up man. 🤘💀🤘

    • @13squier
      @13squier 6 років тому

      FWIW I have a Tungsten 1p, probably my most used tent. They are made of polyester and are heavier than silnylon tents. But the fabric is more durable and doesn't sag and absorb water like silnylon. Just guessing the 3p is probably quite heavy but it will probably last a really long time.

      SP97 thanks for the feedback man I appreciate that... I feel my wife and I have to go for the 3p... I'm 6'3 and she's 5'11 and we hike with our dog lol... so yeah definitely need the extra real estate

      Sure thing! I also have an older Marmot Limelight 3p that is about that size, good for 2 adults and a dog. I think for the money Marmot makes great, durable tents.

      The hornet seem to be comparable. However the biggest selling point on this vs the hornet is the pole that goes across the top to each door. It makes a lot more interior volume. Hornet is lighter. And somewhat cheaper. Moose Jaw has it on sale about twice a year, can’t beat the price.

    The 2 most irritating points for me: 1) - zippers on the outer liner doors notoriously get stuck. No way you can open/close one handed, without holding the edge of fabric with your other hand for it not to get stuck in the zipper itself. Super annoying and I have never experienced this with my other tents. Zippers on this tent are very small (weight saving? cmon) and uncomfortable, and the super thin outer shell fabric goes right into it and jams all the time!!!. 2) The inner shell doors zipper don't get stuck as much, BUT because you have 2 zippers joining at a sharp angle, you also need to hold that joining point while pulling a zipper to open. No way for one-hand operation. Super annoying. Other than that - great tent. I have not had any problems with short guy lines, on any terrain. I can't see how that is a problem. If terrain is uneven - you'll not have comfortable sleep anyway, so find a better one. Also in the video, seems like a tree is the way of a stake, why this is a short line problem?? I have UL3 by the way. Cheers.
