    I’ve owned both. I started with the Tiger Wall, but it is semi freestanding and I live and hike in the Sierra granite. The semi part drove me nuts, to the point that I swapped it for the copper spur that I’ve owned and used for some time now and LOVE it. The tiger wall did do well In rain, sleet, etc. I would have loved it if freestanding.

    I own the tigerwall ul2 and I totally agree with your assessment. I love the tent but the drawbacks you mentioned are real. I accidentally set up the tent one stormy night with the single pole into the wind and it just about folded over onto me. I found myself bracing the roof with my feet, lol lesson learned

      I also own it and never had these issues mentioned in high wind/bad weather. I think it is a bit more complicated to set up correctly tho. As long as I make the 2 front tie down very tight the tent performs perfectly for me.

    Great review, thank you! 😊 I wish I saw this before I purchased the Tiger Wall tent. The fabric is incredibly thin and almost see thru. I am concerned about rainy/stormy days and the tent’s durability but yes it is very light. I don’t mind the color.

    • @BackcountryRenegade
      @BackcountryRenegade  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Glad it was helpful. Yes, it is thin and can handle a brief shower fine. Where it is hindered is in the long overnight rain. had mine wet out a few times. The copper spur will also eventually wet out but the tiger wall happens faster since it is thinner. One of the trade offs for going lighter, but overall great tent.

    Great review. These were my two final choices. I got the copper spur, because I like having it free standing with the foot corners opened up with the poles. I also like the little more room you have with it. As a more physically gifted human, I can handle the few extra ounces and welcome them extra burden on my back. I am interested to see how I'll pack it away in my Osprey Stratos 50 pack. I'll probably jam the poles down the side and lay the tent roll horizontal in my pack.

    Wonderful video, I would say though it feels as though there is too much of an emphasis on the price saving. Sure it is nice to save an extra 50 bucks but you have to spend extra on the guy lines and the extra stakes. Your already spending something in the 500 dollar area and a 5-10% difference shouldn't be weighed too heavily especially when you are buying something so esential and getting something high quality is so important

    • @BackcountryRenegade
      @BackcountryRenegade  3 роки тому +3

      Anything made of sil nylon will wet through given enough rain, which most tents are made of. The thinner the material the faster it wets through. It was a heavy all night downpour, and I’m in the PNW, so needed something not sil nylon. The Abisko is made of TripleRip nylon, which is basically the same thing, just more durable. It will also wet out eventually given enough rain. It is something you either deal with or get a tent made of dyneema / Cuban fiber.

    • @BackcountryRenegade
      @BackcountryRenegade  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, and if your on a multi day hike it can make it for rough go if you are in a rainy area like me. Dyneema tents are the solution but they are expensive. I’ll have one compared with the copper spur up soon

    Great comparison between the two, really loved this video and glad I discovered your channel. In your opinion what would the benefits be of going for semi freestanding tent like the Tiger Wall or the Nemo Hornet you mentioned over something like a tarp tent which can be much lighter?

    • @BackcountryRenegade
      @BackcountryRenegade  3 роки тому

      the main benefit is it is lighter. the less poles you have the less weight. but you need to have good ground to be able to peg down the corners. The down sides is les structure and support compared to the copper spur. But compared to the Tarp tent Lithium Li it is very similar, the main benefit is tigerwall will be cheaper because it uses sil nylon instead of dyneema

  • @kappy0405
    @kappy0405 3 роки тому +1

    Why no ventilation? Probably wouldn't have added more than an oz or 2, and is just too much of a compromise, imo. I also like the roominess of the Copper Spur, especially since the Tiger Wall isn't very taut (the floor and the wall falling in) which makes the lack of space even more annoying. Jmho

    • @BackcountryRenegade
      @BackcountryRenegade  3 роки тому +1

      I agree, those are some of the cons on the TW. It has a top vent on the door but no where near as effective as the CS in my opinion. Also the TW taughtness is determined by the ground you pitch it on since the guy lines are precut. Make your own and that helps. Also the lack of additional poles saves weight but the structure is not as great compared to the CS. So a few trade offs if you want to save some weight
