It's been over 12 years since Xbox Live shut its doors for good, as microsoft shut it down on the Original Xbox. But after 2 decades, the Original 1.0 Xbox live is BACK thanks to some incredibly talented devs behind Project Insignia for the Original Xbox. Best part is, it works on both modded xbox, and completely stock xbox! And its just like it was back in 2002. I'm going to show you how to make an xbox live account, what the best playing games on insignia, and how to setup xemu on an emulator and even how to set it up on the steam deck! The original xbox live is nowaccessible to MUCH a wider audience, especially those who grew up with the original Xbox, and I can't wait for you to try it out.

Insignia eh? I guess I don't need to invent the kai box then. What is the Kai Box? It was an fpga powered box that I designed but never built. What was it's job? It was a way to use xlink Kai without a pc, so you could do link games online. I never built it though, but thanks Jeff, cause your bit about insignia allowed me to remember and finally get credit for it nearly 20 years after in designed it! Anyone is free to make the kaibox to augment insignia if they'd want, I'd like a shout-out if you do....

Too bad there's 4000 registered users and you'll be lucky to find 10 people online. Since i registered 30days ago i was barely able to play some games with Counter Strike or Unreal and literally ZERO with other games (and i checked it daily if people do play them, even asked to play on its
discord). It's a great project, damn great, but apparently people do not give a f being there and play with others. Also, searching and asking players inside the discord does not help find you people play, because there's no real care in it.

Xbox live during that era was insane. I can't even describe it. My mom was a single parent, raising 3 kids, and we lived in a tiny cramped apartment that was technically a duplex. We had close to no money, but I begged my mom to get my xbox live, that woman not only got it for me, but let me use the internet modem to play (this was before the popularity of routers to allow wifi) and it was the best thing i have ever experienced. It was addicting how much fun it was.

I know that this video is mainly about restoring the old wild West era of Xbox live before everything was so heavily monetized, but I feel the need to point out that I really miss the old Xbox sound design. Just the aesthetic in general. All those futuristic beeps and robotic noises were so cool. I'll never understand why newer Xbox consoles never stuck with that.

They were trying to appeal to "the whole family", all that weeb counter-culture crap that had everyone trying to make their console more like a media center + Wii. But OG Xbox represented an era that was dark and gritty and real; games had good writing and even better multiplayer, and... man, I'm an old man. But it was all corporate looking over the shoulders of the design team / artists and saying "No, I know how to make art better than you do. Make it look friendlier."

Awesome! It's crazy that at 3:43 we remember the original quality looking like the right side, but in reality it looked a lot closer to the left side through those older TVs.

A similar thing happens to the psp.
We were only able to use ad-hoc features in some games, but some clever boy figured out how to route the traffic to a server to enable online play in games such as monster hunter, Tiger Woods, killzone, nfs.
I remember back in the day before 3g when I'd literally have to walk down the streets of a rough neighbourhood just to find a small WiFi signal to download a cheat page or CWCHEAT.
Then I became a script kiddy.

The difference between the AV to HDMI and the Pound upscale is nuts.

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR Рік тому

The AV2HDMI is using the lowest quality video signal(composite), the Pound converter is internally using the best - Component video(similar quality to VGA), which supports 480p and HD with games that support it(which may be available on more games with a modded Xbox, much like a modded PS2 allows HD output for many more games).
It would be impossible for even the highest end composite video converter to match it.

Even though I was already very familiar with video games at this point (N64, Sega Genesis) I believe the Xbox Live Era is what really turned me into a life long gamer. What an absolutely amazing era of video gaming

Thanks for putting all this together and the amount of info. Now I just need to fix my system (it was modded with an actual chip and EvoX hardware) that needs opened and a orange light flashing issue. Thankfully the clock capacitor was removed along ago, so it's not that. I won't have access to it again with the proper tools for another month (hopefully). I was able to get it run when I last plugged it in December, but the HDD had games missing. It was a launch day system so hopefully it's salvageable.

Xbox supported component cables, not just red white yellow. You can force your Xbox into HD mode as well, which upscales the 480 games into 720. I have uploaded game play of NCCA football that is recorded raw from my console, not an emulator, and they are in 720.

Got me interested in the pound converters, Ive looked into a few and reviews are hit and miss but the side by side comparison is nice. Currently I have my ps4 on my smart tv and my childhood crt tv next to it for my ps1/ps2 n64 and og xbox. $40 bucks a pop for the convenience of only using 1 tv isnt too hateful. Granted I dont need it since my setup is a matter of sliding over 2 feet to a different screen but still nice to see its an option.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS EXCELLENT VIDEO! Quality content, as usual from this channel! ---I was 19-20 when OG XBL started up. It was sooo awesome, and for the most part, just worked great. I had busted my ass working 2 FT jobs at the time, and was still living with my Pop. So I had the money. Had a PS2, GC, and Xbox. XBL made the OG XBOX my platform of choice at the time for sure. Especially with it's exclusives, and nearly all 3rd party on it was rivaling the PC of the day for supreme version. Add XBL on top and it was thEE shit. Several XBL games of the era got my attention, but the one I came back time and time again for, was PGR 2. LOVED that game. So disappointed that they haven't figured out a way to reboot/remake the PGR series after Bizarre Creations went out. It's a fun game on it's own, but it was HIGHLY tied into OG XBL. LEaderboards, Time Trials, Lobbies, etc. Despite still being fun, it always felt like 40% of the game was missing without having XBL available any longer...... I've been hearing/reading about this for around a year now. After seeing this, I feel I have to do this now lol.... PGR2 needs me, and I it. An all-time favorite of mine. Crimson Skies was another great, Rainbow Six 3, Battlefront 2 etc. MAKE PGR GAMES GREAT AGAIN! lol. Cheers.

I got a crystal Xbox for Christmas in 2004. It came with Fable and Crimson Skies… crimson skies was so cool but Fable became my obsession for a few years. I learned to beat the game in less than 5 hours. It was something I’d do at sleepover parties when we stayed up all night playing Xbox. We’d also have LAN parties playing Halo 2 with 8 people, 4 to an Xbox and tv, with a sheet secured to the ceiling to divide the room so we couldn’t “screen peak”. Man, we had so much fun.

Microsoft renamed Xbox live to "Xbox Network" which sounds so corporate and boring. I miss the orange "Live" logo they used back in the original Xbox and Xbox 360 days, it's so nostalgic to me. I still remember the orange dvd cases that the Xbox Live cards came in back in the early 360 days, they looked so cool but also seemed like a waste of plastic haha. (EDIT: I found one I had saved complete with the card inside and everything which is pretty cool) That's probably why they later switched to cardboard cases. (I don't know if the plastic DVD cases was a EU only thing)

  • @Microwave414

For me, if you're going to play original xbox, you use the duke. Yeah it's massive but is somehow comfortable and ergonomic while being comically huge and I do have small hands so that says something to how they managed to recover from that blunder when making the PCBs. With hyperkin remaking the dukes I suppose you could have an original and new controller experience still with that adapter which is... interesting actually. I kind of hope microsoft allows for this to somehow work on xbox one, series and as if this is not already a long shot but somehow manages to squeeze in an update for the 360 to work with this method. That would be something to behold.
