    On June 28th 2023 - Harrison Ford will embark on his last adventure as Indiana Jones in THE DIAL OF DESTINY, finally bringing an end to a cinematic legacy that spans three decades - but does that mean the end of Indiana Jones?
    Today we'll be exploring the wild world of Indiana Jones video games and tracing it's history from it's early days in the arcade through to it's death on the Xbox and PlayStation. Along the way we'll cover everything from Monkey Island to Star Wars, Tomb Raider to Uncharted, The NES to the Nintendo 64 - all in hopes of discovering what the future could hold for Henry Jones Junior.
    It's part critique, part retrospective, part review and part history lesson - obviously full of spoilers and obviously full of my opinions.

    A little known fact: in "The Last Crusade - The adventure game", you can prevent Elsa to leave with the grail, saving her. This really shows how Lucasarts was committed to give the players as much freedom approaching the puzzles as possible!

      @@IFinishedAVideoGame Yep! The trick is: after saving your father with the grail, you have a split second to grab it before Elsa does. If you do, you can give it back to the knight for an alternate ending. It's really a masterclass on how to do branching paths without making a game collapse onto itself!

    I was the lead designer and writer of Staff of Kings PSP, and this video MADE MY DAY. We were always working with limited budgets and timeframes at Amaze, and the end of a project was usually a letdown as we let the game stumble out the door. Hearing someone appreciate one of those old games, so many years later, really makes me happy. Thank you!
    (I work at Undead Labs now, and these days, we get to take WAY TOO LONG on a game, instead!)

    • @IFinishedAVideoGame

      That's extremely cool to hear! Whenever I do these licensed game videos I always try to be fair to whatever game I cover and go in with the view that it's often the circumstances that prompt low quality games rather than anything nefarious on the part of the developers!
      That being said I really enjoyed Staff of Kings PSP - it was something of a tonic to the unending frustration of the Wii version! Were you there while the studio was working on Lord of the Rings Tactics? That was another unexpectedly interesting licensed game I covered and I was surprised to see it also came from Amaze!

    • @deRangutang
      @deRangutang 7 місяців тому +1

      @@IFinishedAVideoGame I was around, but the studio had a LOT of individual teams and internal divisions (making like a dozen different games a year), so I wasn't involved at all in LOTR.
      I knew that was one of the ones we were prouder of as a studio, though!
      (I won't point you towards ALL the games I worked on, because some of them really were unmitigated disasters. Please never do a retrospective on Kung Fu Panda games, because that is a source of deep shame.)

    As someone who was the target age of Lego games when the Lego Indy games came out, I can actually say that a lot of us grew up on these movies (thanks to our parents having grown up on them too) and so we were never confused by the cutscenes' reliance on knowledge of the source material. Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars trilogy were staples of my, and other kids', childhoods.

      Yeah it's a bit of an odd one with the Lego games. I did the same in the LOTR video and the justification is really just that I don't want the back end of the video to be dominated by Lego games when they don't have a huge bearing on the wider story of the franchise.
      I almost think they exist in their own world separate to the rest of the franchise but for both LOTR and Indy there are only two so I might as well chuck them in!

    Lego always manages to turn violent scenes into some fantastic dark humor. My favorite instance is in Lego Harry Potter when (spoiler) they recreate Harry bringing back Cedric's dead body to his dad as him bringing the PIECES, and Cedric's dad getting the instructions to put his son back together 💀

    Fate of Atlantis was a treasure growing up. Charming, fun, recognizable, witty. A 9 out of 10 in my opinion. My only issue was similar to yours about the Atlantis phase where it suffered classic point and click short comings. There's a part where the instructions for how to operate the giant drill are poorly scribbled on the wall ONE screen removed from its location, requiring you collect vaguely lever shaped items and just 'decipher' the scribble to know how to arrange them on the machine. An earlier puzzle along the same lines did a far better job integrating the proper stone disk combination into the murals of nearby walls, as if the clues weren't just poorly placed nearby but rather constructions of the backdrop. You had to soak in the entirety of the scene as opposed to just looking at the singular odd thing out.

I’ve probably beaten the game well over a dozen times by this point. Fate of Atlantis has as fond of a place in my heart as any of the films, if not more. It's a different version, but that opening song is absolutely the song that plays in the intro cinematic of Chrono Cross. I still have the words memorized.
    "What was the start of all this?
    When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?
    Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
    From deep within the flow of time.
    "Yet, for a certainty, back then,
    We loved so many, yet hated so much.
    We hurt others, and were hurt ourselves.
    And still we ran like the wind,
    Whilst our laughter echoed,
    Beneath cerulean skies."
    God that takes me back.

    • @ForumArcade
      @ForumArcade 10 місяців тому +1

      Also Ioved your opening perspective on time and nostalgia. A lot of existential philosophy is deeply caught up in the temporal nature of our experience of reality; trying to find or create lasting meaning in a fleeting existence.
      I think it's especially pertinent to a discussion of video games and modern entertainment media, because they're so relatively new, but we're all aging. There are people alive who remember a time before video games; people who were here from the very beginning of the medium. But before too long, that will no longer be the case. It kinda changes how it feels; the role it plays in our culture.

    You have no idea how much I wanted this video, since you announced it. I never really was a fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, never really watched the movies or played the games, except ONE, it was a PS2 game and I have very vague memories about it but 3 images are still very clearly in my head; Indiana Jones in Prague fighting the guys wearing black suits, Indiana Jones fighting in a Japanese/Chinese restaurant at the beginning of a level, and the image that I hate the most, the Kraken fight, that fucking Kraken man, I hated it SO MUCH, I don't think I ever cleared it as a kid, in fact I never finished the game because of it. I recently rewatched this retrospective, and I was intrigued by one of your closing lines. Specifically, the one where you propose that Machine Games would be good at making an Indy game, if they can transition their 1st person skills into making a 3rd person game. With the reveal of _The Great Circle,_ we know that it's going to be mostly 1st person, which is a decision most of us clearly didn't expect.
    So I just had to ask, what were your thoughts on making the game in this style?
    As for myself, I'm actually really digging it. I think it gives the game a more distinct feel than "Uncharted with a hat." That was what _Emperor's Tomb_ and _Staff Kings_ kinda felt like to me. This direction looks to be taking _The Great Circle_ away from the industry's standard for action adventure games. I also liked that they seem to pull the camera out to third person during platforming sections, to make sure they're both uncompromised and fun.
    (PS. Also, I loved the consistent theme of nostalgia throughout the retrospective. It gives it a sort running narrative. It's some good writing on your part!)

    • @IFinishedAVideoGame
      @IFinishedAVideoGame  3 місяці тому +4

      Honestly - I felt it was a bit of a weird choice at first but the more I've watched the trailer the more I'm convinced it's actually the right choice. It's a perspective they are comfortable with and so rather than having to relearn basic design - they can focus on nailing the feeling of being Indy.
      My only potential concerns come from the fact that we haven't seen much of the story so far - that is make or break for this franchise so hopefully they nail the feeling of adventure and historical mythology!

    Originally, to solve the two 'cutscene' puzzles in the Grail Temple in the Last Crusade adventure game, you had to consult the real life 'grail diary' supplement the game came with in order to know what part of the screen to click on, to get through the spinning blades and over the 'leap from the lion's head'. If you clicked on the wrong part of the screen, Indy died.

    About the Emperor's Tomb section: The stealth levels can still be done with fighting if you want, though it does make them way more deadly. So if your main criticism of those parts is the stealth, know that it's not mandatory. The environments also might be duller than others, but is there really a way to make a slightly generic Nazi base more interesting?
    Of course, when you play the game as a kid, you don't think critically about things like this (same thing with the "improper" ramping and the game getting way too crazy towards the end), you just wanna have fun with it, and goddamn was it fun. And if you ask me, it still is. I replayed it a few times in recent years, and I found it just as awesome as I remember it being from my childhood. I feel like Emperor's Tomb isn't talked about enough, so I'm glad you did, even if it was in a more critical way than my nostalgia-filled brain would've liked.
    About the Lego section: "No consequences for death" b-b-but you lose like 2000 studs and getting them all back can be tricky! In all seriousness, yeah it's easy, but that is not a problem at all, especially when - like you said - all you want is to have fun.
    As for the million-stud-collecting secret levels not being worth it, I think quite the opposite, though it might once again be the nostalgia-riddled, non-critical part of my brain talking. I love improving my time, finding optimizations to getting more studs faster and just generally destroying everything in the levels. Though the Warehouse can literally be skipped by getting in a tank and shooting the target endlessly until you get enough studs, so it basically has a fixed completion time of ~3 minutes. Tbh I don't even know how else you would squeeze a million studs out of that level.
    About the Lego 2 section: Same thing, my nostalgia wants the game to be regarded as perfect, because it was a big part of my childhood, but with this one, I can fully understand most of the criticisms, specifically the vehicle levels. My biggest problem with them is that I'm a completionist and when it comes to Lego games, I want to break every Lego object in each level and get the most studs possible (even after getting the True Adventurer rank, it's just not enough) but the vehicle levels have so many damn objects that it's near impossible to do that without spending 30+ minutes in an otherwise barely 5 minute level.
    As for the goofiness of the cutscenes, you mention the late afternoon kid's show vibe, which is perfectly appealing when you play it as a kid, but with an adult head, yeah, it's a little too ridiculous.
    Finally, calling the game "one of the worst in the entire Lego series" might be a little harsh, but again, that's just me.
    Overall, I appreciate you covering these games, and despite being more critical than I would've liked, I also appreciate you pointing out flaws in the games that I'd consider perfect solely because they're childhood favorites of mine. Great video.

    • @IFinishedAVideoGame
      @IFinishedAVideoGame  10 місяців тому

      Thanks very much. Yeah I think you could potentially read my Emperor's Tomb criticisms as a little harsh which is why I wanted to conclude by saying it is a fun video game that does a lot of things right.
      I just wanted to avoid the obvious "oh it's the best one and it deserves a remake yada yada" because I feel like so many cult games from that era get that sort of assessment and it kinda washes over the truth of the matter!
      But yeah - thanks for watching and commenting!

    I am currently obsessed with video game soundtracks, so here's a fun fact: the Fate of Atlantis soundtrack - at least those parts of it that aren't by John Williams - is by Clint Bajakian, Michael Z. Land, and Peter McConnell, the same three-man team responsible for the music in Monkey Island 2 and Day of the Tentacle. The three of them stayed friends after they left LucasArts, and they actually got back together recently to write the music for Return to Monkey Island.
