I’ve had several Vauxhalls in my life. Now I have a Nissan Leaf and I’m blown away by how decent the buttons, seatbelts, pedals, doors etc all are.
LEAF build quality is pretty great. Love my LEAF, I feel like it will hold up well for many years of ownership.
Totally agree with your thoughts on Ford... They only have 3 large expensive SUV's. So no "model range" to choose from.

Had a petrol Astra for 13 years, 110,000 miles. Only usual consumables (the exhaust and battery lasted 12 years each) and totally reliable. Recently bought a Mokka e, 11 months old 3,500 miles for £17,000 ie less than half of its new list price. There are some excellent second hand bargains around.
It is smart looking. I wish we had more cars like this in the states. Even VW refuses to bring thier smaller cars to the US. I drove a station wagon in college. Perfect car to load up friends and dogs and beer and head out to the beach!
Our ID3 with optioned Heat Pump regularly gets its 250+ mile range. We are up in Aultbea just past Gairloch, on holiday from Kinross. I have my Ioniq electric 38 and wife her ID. She got 4.9m/kw with 3 adults, large dog plus luggage for 3 for the week. I got 5.4m/kw with same load, 3 + dog + luggage. She regularly has a 100m motorway round trip to Motherwell for work and gets over 220 at motorway speeds and doesn’t drop much in winter but I do understand the standard non option heat pump cars struggle in winter.
Too expensive at RRP but if you find a deal near the £20,000 that makes it a reasonable choice for an almost new EV.
I have always preferred estates, I was lucky enough to have jobs where an estate was supplied for all the c£@p I had to carry around, then great for carrying all the stuff required at weekends, also fortunately long before BIK tax!

No one pedal driving? Why haven't they and VW built that software option into the software by now? Do other Stelantis cars offer one-pedal driving? This Astra is clearly not a dedicated EV. Thanks for the review.
Vauxhall EVs are built on the same chassis (with mods) as the petrol versions, so no, you won’t have a dedicated EV platform, but it does allow them to be cheaper to manufacture due to increased commonality. That’s the USP for this brand.
@@javelinXH992well the new stellantis plattform on Peugeot e-3008 is an electric first plattform, which means it was developed as an pure ev plattform then realised they cant compete with tesla and chinese on pure ev so decided to make hybrid on that plattform too. 😂

Great review as always gents. Had a Vectra in the early 2000's . Bland but cost peanuts to run , reliable and value for money. At the time i needed a " that'll do" and it was for 5 years
Had a Cavalier Sri back in the day & it was fabulous. For that reason I will always defend Vauxhall, I think these look far better than the Peugeot equivalent, nothing fancy, won't date, spot on.
Won't get me out of my Kia, although having said that they are becoming more of a pita to drive due to the lack of physical buttons 😡
Back in "the good old days" I had 3 Cavaliers in 4 years, covering 60,000 in each one. No faults, breakdowns, or repairs, apart from brakes and tyres. Most reliable company cars I ever had.
I got an estimate at age 47. It's so handy for tip runs. That's where life is right now.
The thing about the Astra is that it never really seems to have any lineage... no two marks of Astra ever seem to have much in common design-wise whereas Ford liked to keep a few design cues.
I’ve got a Megane E Tech arriving next week. This car should be 40% less cost than the Renault, rrp !

In short : not a bad car, but not a good one either. The competition does a much better job for less, and it would be interesting if it were sold for £20,000 less.

Years ago I was looking for a replacement for my rover 820Si and one of my test drives was a vauxhall vectra. I couldn't believe how sluggish it was. Ended up buying a saab 93 LOT which was a class (or 3) above.
I was 35 and needed a larger car, so bought the ladt of the line Passat 5.5 highline 130. It lasted 5 months until the rear suspension collapsed. Swapped it for a Mondeo 130 Ghia estate with self levelling suspension.
Current car is a 21 Ioniq 38 on personal lease. I have now extended the lease twice and paying £150 a month on 15K a year. Cheap as chips to run as I have solar. So goodness knows what I will replace it with next August.
Can't complain about £150 a month
I have a 2016 Astra k 1.6 diesel auto Sri tourer (estate) and can’t wait to get rid for an EV.. would like another estate but I doubt it would be the Astra EV with just a 50kwh battery.. why are Stellantis stuck on 50Kwh for most of their EV range? 🤷🏼
I could buy an almost brand new (new shape) very low mileage mg5 for around 20k with a 61kwh battery🤷🏼
You can get a brand new MG5 for less than £20k now. There’s a fire sale because of an imminent new model.
Nothing wrong with 50Kwh if it's efficient. But that battery no way costs enough to explain the premium Stellantis are attempting to charge for these. No way in hell.
That battery is dirty cheap by today's standards - this car could EASILY be in the mid-£20ks and still turn a profit.
Still the best warts and all car reviews on YT. Please don't ever join the "Everything is wonderful" brigade who are clearly sucking up to the manufacturers in order to get the cushy all expenses paid Jollies.
The problem with Astra estate's is they are mostly company cars and driven as such.

I got lent one of these when my MG4 was in for some warranty work. I couldn’t believe how boring it was to drive compared to my MG4. It was comfortable and quiet but had nothing else going for it.
Why on earth do manufacturers have such high list prices when they know they will heavily discount a new car? If I am in the market for a new car I will look at the MRSP to see if it is in my price range, I wont assume that I will get a 30% discount. I would look at a £40,000+ price of the Astra and immediately cross it off my list of possible cars.
Remembering that in most jurisdictions, any BIK/Tax is based on the list price of the vehicle, irrespective of what the punter paid for the car.

With all these new EV's coming out with their 'massive' ranges can we just reflect on the 13 year old Volkswagen 1.6 litre Passat blue motion diesel saloon, which travelled from Morocco to London, 1484 miles on one tank of fuel recently, averaging 92.4 mpg, as videographed on Joe Achiles channel on youtube. A car with real logistical ability. This is the ability EV's are trying to replace.
Now tell me how many people drive 1500 miles?
@ElectricVehicleMan my car only has a 650 mile range but going to and around the Scottish highlands, it is extremely logistically convenient. If I had that car I wouldn't have to refill at all during a week away there and to and from England. I would love it.
I'd have a Tesla Model 3 Highland with more power, tech and much better build quality and save 5 grand.
I have a Peugeot e208. Nice small car, drives great, reasonable range, nice styling and interior. Pretty much an okay car. Could have got a Corsa-e, eC4, Mokka etc as they are all basically the same car.
The Astra is yet another variant on the same ICE platform/battery combination, but (for me) the most boring bodywork out there. Makes my average e208 look like a supermodel. Biggest issue is the ridiculous list price, which is pure fantasy.
Probably bottom of the list for my next smallish EV - just nothing to attract me to this.
The only person this car makes sense to is someone under 25. The insurance is dirt cheap compared to a model 3.
But a 2021 model 3 is so cheap to PCP these days, around £250 with £1,000 down and will absolutely destroy this car in every single metric.
I think the USP for me is that it's available as an estate.
Apart from this and its Stellantis clone the 308SW, and the (a bit long in the tooth) MG5, there really aren't many EV estates until you get to expensive stuff like the ID7. And I suspect the lower estate form factor is part of the reason why the efficiency is so good.
But all of them seem to have questionable rear passenger space and no regen flappy-paddles, (as far as I'm aware) which is a real shame.

Same here, I had a Sierra 2.0 GL Estate, as at the time I hade two rather large German Shepherd dogs. They always looked forward to going out in the car and they acting as the ultimate anti-theft deterrent.

For £20k it’s a steal, we have a Mokka e ultimate which is a great little around town car for the money it cost (less than £300 a month) but we never use it on long runs as the hi speed range isn’t great and the software/nav is just awful
Estates are not just age related. In my case it is dog related. An estate is essential for German Shepherd owners. 🐕

Your Autotrader prices are a bit high. A base model with 9 miles on the clock £22,628 (white), a load under 25 in colours too. Lots of 23 "demonstrators" with - 10k on clock, Ultimate trim under 28k. These prices will come down fast from here, they are hanging about. (make silly offers when buying and see what you can get).

I've always preferred Ford over Vauxhall but at least they have released electric cars which aren't stupidly big and using an iconic name just to get sale numbers up

For £43K, I'd expect to be getting a ground up EV, like the Ioniq 5, which can be had for less than this compromised BEV.
The Astra doesn't compare well with the cheaper and more comfortable Stellantis Citroen E-C4.... The list price is about £10,000 over what it should be.
When you have MG knocking out cars far better for less money I just can't see how Vauxhall can justify this
Can get vauxhall parts anywhere, try getting Ora parts etc and see why appeals to those thinking off making the switch

Ora isn't made by MG, it's made by Great Wall Motors.
MG parts are easily found, and can be ordered quickly from the dealer.
Ora, I've no idea, but presumably Vauxhall parts are easier to obtain.
saw the ev3 the other day and very disappointing considering ground up ev alledgedly. still had no frunk to speak of, small inside and not very impressive. of course over priced too with haptic keys and Ai . Onlt good point was it had space saver wheel capacity
Being ultimate spec does it have electric seats with memory, ventilated and a high end multi speaker system?
I would not bother a herd of showroom salesmen to buy this car ever - why is it listed at such a high list price that you then have to haggle down to get what they are actually selling for? There’s enough stress in life without haggling and I wonder how many people are paying way over the odds for what is basically a less than luxurious car that incurs luxury car tax?
It's a bit dull and cheap looking. Unfortunately it's not even cheap. In 3 years this will be 10,000 you'd be mad to buy it new, when it actually is cheap it may be palatable.
Definitely only in the estate, if you've got a family of 4 and go on hols you need that extra boot space.
50kw battery is infuriatingly inadequate. 60kw should be the absolute minimum for any car.

I wasn't aware that batteries were capable of charging at 3C now. Since when?
Any EV with a decent cooling system ... and remember they don't hold that peak charge rate for very long. (Of course it's all about the charging curve. If an EV can hold 100kW for most of its charge curve then it can be faster to charge in real world circumstances than one with a high peak that rolls off rapidly.)
For me the Vauxhall astra in good is boiled potatoes
Don't forget the MG4 has a far far better warranty than the Vauxhall

They like to tout the 7 year warranty but there's a laundry list of stuff that's excluded after a year, and it grows even longer after 3 years.

@@firebreafdragon What do you expect.... MG are a budget brand. Your 12v battery in any car has a short life. It's a consumable. The main point is offering a lifetime transferable warranty on the drivetrain battery. That is at least a confirmation that you don't have to worry about the main battery pack.

I wouldn't trade my Renault ZOE GT for the Astra. Buy a two year Zoe for £12000 or less. Until the Astra gets below £15000 just not worth it.
So basically this is a re-bodied Peugeot E308 with a Vauxhall badge & worse interior. Even seems to have the exceptionally laggy Peugeot / Citroen / Vauxhall Stellantis infotainment that takes 30 seconds to even wake up after you turn it on.
I bought a 3 year old Polestar 2 for less than £22k - battery State of Health 98%, 406bhp, 240 mile range. Much better car with better value.
You must be mad to buy an electric Vauxhall. Next time you are on the road, look at all the Vauxhalls driving around and you will notice that on at least half of them, one of the daytime running lights have blown. If they can’t get a light bulb to work consistently, what’s going to happen to a full electric car.😂😂😂😂

Im watching this review and I no idea why. I would never consider this car, I already have an EV, we dont need a new one. The Astra has everything wrong with it that I would have assumed albeit better range!

So, why don’t they sell ‘em? Very simple, people aren’t as stupid as they think. The main players in the automotive world have been part of the con from the start. Since the EV idea started, they’ve been ramming it down our throats that lithiums and cobalts and nickels, together with their oxides, phosphates and titanates as with all the mumbo jumbo required to confuse the general public into thinking that batteries are soooo expensive. Sure, mining is expensive, so is drilling for oil. It’s just that if you sell lots of it the cost ratio drops considerably. To add insult to injury THESE THINGS HAVE NO ENGINE AND NO GEARBOX, the two big-budget outlays in the industry. On the back of this, combustion engined cars have seen their prices steadily and artificially increased well beyond inflation rates to “match” the EV’s.
And so we have it. The traditional affordable model which until relatively recently was selling for twelve thousand, and its electric counterpart priced at double - remember: same chassis, no engine, no gearbox - then the former pushed to twenty and the electric model, which should cost half, i.e. six, is a “bargain at “only” twenty two.
If ever there were a modern version of the emperor’s new clothes, this is it.

Actually manufacturers have been calling the whole drive assembly (engine/gearbox) a power unit for over 2 decades now.
Calling the drive assembly is perfectly acceptable here.
