Going by 2527 charges, over 8 years, that has probably been plugged in every single night and returned to 100% each day. Thats potentially contributed to the cell giving up. Probably nothing to do with the rapid charging, looks like only averaging twice per month.
If the dodgy module can be replaced cost effective or a cheap pack sourced from a scrapper (maybe even a 40kWh) then it could be a winner. Definitely buyer beware of money pits.

but at the end: if you get a car that has been neglected and got no maintenance and no brake fluids you will experience same issues.
Spark plugs renewed ? no, the first ones since 1999 as proud owners might tell. New automatic transmission oil ?
Yes, just done, the first oil replacement since 1999 - you can be happy
except the huge wear and tear which had happened in thos 24 years where a new flluid would not help or heel.

if you charge a leaf with timer, it will make 2 charges each time... once when you plug and once when charging starts .. can be a reason for do many charges... 30kwh leafs are really bad decisions now for second hand cars

@@typxxilps a Leaf doesn't really need such kind of maintenance: the only thing it needs, is a user that treats the battery well. So not charging frequently to 100% and not driving like Max Verstappen, and needing to QC a lot as a result.
But sadly it's difficult to know how the previous owners really treated the car: I would rather buy a Leaf with 60.000miles on the odometer. Than one with just 10.000miles, because if both are frequently charged to 100% then at least the one with 60.000miles would drive it soon after that. Which is okay.

there is a big clue at 8:15 the power rings to the right of the divider on the screen are mostly single, they should only be like they are with a nearly empty battery, they should all be double. Also the Leaf does have battery temperature management! its not too good, but when rapid charging the charge rate is reduced if the battery gets too hot, that is what all the "Leafgate" videos a few years ago were all about.
This one needs a new 12v battery, then on Leaf spy read and clear all the DTCs, then see what it is like and then get that dodgy battery cell fixed. looking forward to part 2!

Have a 7.5 year leaf 30kw. With 55000 mile and gone down to 8 bars and below 66% battery capacity 85 mile range. Taken it to nissan garage to be checked out. Went to collect the car, and it now has 11 bars and 80% battery capacity 100 mile range on leaf spy. Glade to have seen the battery warranty info and go it checked out. Believe it needed a software up. I've been running the leaf for a month now, and the range is still at 100 miles. This could also need a software update, and nothing could be wrong with one of the cells. Who know. 🤔 I'm still happy with the car. I hope to keep it for another 8 years.

@@leafdriver8129 Theres a BMS software update for the 30 packs; it should be free. They automatically did mine when I took it in for brake fluid flush at 50K.
The original software miss-reports the remaining health and capacity. However, all the extra capacity is actually in the reserve at the bottom of the pack, so you can technically still use it. The update brings that capacity out of the reserve and properly displays the battery's capacity.

Electrical charge failures can be awful in modern cars generally.
I had a Renault Scenic on Motability once, and working at a music festival, during setting up camp it refused to start when needing to go park it up. What's worse is that the lights refused to turn off, and trying to look for the battery to disconnect it I couldn't find it.
So RAC were called, and sure enough he couldn't find the battery either, despite also looking up the manual and seeing where it claimed to well, wasn't. He worked out the battery had depleted and after a call or two to HQ was told how weird these cars were when that gets drained.
I pissed off a lot of people on the campsite that night unfortunately, and needless to say that car was a nightmare generally.

This is the risk of buying from auction. In the eighties I used to go with my gaffer to auctions to buy a couple of cars for tidying and resale. We had a routine for checking for lemons. We'd go early, check the stock and identify cars that we were interested in then check that the engines were cold. If it started easily, no smoke of any colour, no tappet or timing chain rattles, no misfires, etc and it drove into the auction hall we'd bid. Anything else, just no.
Obviously you cannot do this with an EV but you can look for other indicators.
Gotta feel sorry for these guys. I hope they get a resolution.

By the looks of it from LeafSpy I don't think a BMS update will help much until the low cell is fixed, you might try noting the cell mV drop number and then driving a mile and then plug it back in on a slow charger and see if the low cell will come back up more as it top balances.

Great one - hope it gets solved or better for your "neighbour" from the maybe miles long road.
I like those informative niche videos even if I am not interested in a Nissan or a Leaf, just keen to know the stories , the investigations and what you have already achieved this way.
I hope it will pay off for him to get the most out of his car. At the end it might be always worth to know if someone loves his car and is happy with the shortcomings in general. If the neighbour is really happy with the car in general and could overlook that he would ride that for 4 or 8 more years cause he is not missing much except the battery
then it is worth to consider a repowering of the whole battery or getting a full battery from china for the Leaf.
Might be expensive repair. but worth cause the Lead is well known in the community, has its appreciation by new buyers that can also live with the limitations and shortcoming and therefore this car holds its value with a new battery for sure, which usually also comes with a bigger size and of cause bigger range.
The repairs of a Nissan Leaf are affordable and spare parts are available or can be found from donator cars. And then it is worth to get a battery replacement which is not the general case for every EV cause there are cars where spare parts have become an issue and usual repairs are more frequent and a lot more expensive.
Good luck and I really like such usefull, helpfull video about the general topic in this case but also beyond and the dangerous situation auction buyers can face in the UK (which is here not allowed for private owners, gross sale only).

Not weird the percentage is climbing. As the cells get balanced, the calculated capacity goes up. you obviously don't get more kWh from that, but the closer the cell voltages are, the bigger the range of SOC available, the computer calculates. See the same thing in my not a leaf, also with one or more bad cells.

  • @patrickjr11

I had 9 bars on my old leaf but I could easily get 90+ miles even motorway driving (65 mph). So it's more likely to be th duff cell causing the issue then just the age of the battery. I usually got the extra orange light if the car thought that the charge was interrupted by the charger. Turn it off then on again and it never caused any other issues.
A duff 12v can cause a lot of the problems too. Well worth replacing that if you see other weird behaviour. I had a DC charger locked to the car once and it was not released until the CPO remotely rebooted the unit. Never happened after I put a new 12v in.

Buy an EV that's over 8 years old so the battery warranty has ended. Just joking. It is unacceptable that Nissan don't provide battery repair options themselves and the customer is forced to go to an unauthorised third party who don't have access to the same Nissan technology. The government really needs to step in and regulate the EV industry to ensure batteries repair costs are reasonable too, or at least give the option to consumers to extend the warranty on the battery for say an extra £100 a month. Its great Andrew shines a light on these anti-repair and anti-consumer practices of EV manufacturers. I think only Nio have the option to swap out faulty batteries at low cost and quickly because their batteries are lease only and are designed to be swappable in less than 5 minutes.

Only Charging does not help to Balance the cells on every car.
Many cars (at least All Volkswagen ID models) dont Do active balancing while the car is still on, because current flowing through the battery can disturb the cell Voltage measurement. For those cars, you have to turn them on, Drive one or two Meters, turn it off again, wait for five - six hours and repeat.
But depending on how debalanced the battery is, you might have to do this for one or two weeks.

I would have thought it would be possible to map out individual cells from the battery. Depending on the layout it may need to be a group of cells. It might be a challenge to achieve this in a pre-existing battery and easier to get replacement cells but as a thought or design experiment probably quite straight forward (thinking a big pile of either FETs or IGBJTs).

The car is charged one hour a day not more. So it lives between 40%-90% most of the time. And we are at 9 bars now. We didn’t abuse it as your theory is for the car you have in the video to get it to 9 bars. Our car has no errors with cells luckily and we can do 60 miles on a charge reliably

Calibration and balancing are different things. Balancing can't happen at very high or very low states of charge, but given there's a bad cell, balancing isn't going to fix this.
Few further points; Tortoise mode is caused by ANY cell gets below 3V, in this case, cell 13. A variance of 430 mV will present all the weird behaviour you're seeing.
The hX is really bad. Again, caused by the bad cell. When the cell is replaced, that will recover.
This car has been rapid charged all it's life. That is what has killed it.
The BMS software update has probably already been done. Cars that haven't had it done are hens-teeth rare

I don't entirely buy the problem as being a lack of cooling myself given the air-cooling of an e-Golf battery, for instance, will have little benefit in UK weather. The e-Golf can't blow cool air over the battery pack, just circulate air within the casing, which helps a little bit with cell temperatures -- but unless you hammer the car for power or rapid charge all the time this shouldn't make too much difference. Something else is going on to cause the early failures of LEAF batteries, and chemistry seems like an easy answer here.

If they got a trader to buy on their behalf, they should be able to get a refund or repair under their consumer rights - any serious fault appearing within six months is deemed to have existed at the time of sale, and the dealer is liable to pay the cost of repair, or to give a refund. As I understand the situation the Leaf, as you correctly identified, has no thermal management system for the battery. When every other manufacturer decided to install a liquid cooling system for the battery Nissan decided an air cooling system would be adequate. Worse when they became aware of the problem they failed to correct it in the next iteration of the car. In Australia the Leaf was close on $60K plus on road costs and for the battery to degrade at the rate they did due to poor thermal management is a disgrace. The Leaf has been discontinued because of poor sales and the bad reputation acquired by poor design choices.

Doesn't apply to LFP (some cars and stationary storage use LFP chemistry lithium batteries) but leave NMC lithium batteries (typical car, phone, laptop, powertool, tablet etc) at near 0% or 100% it's bad. Worse is keeping it close to 100% when it's hot. When hot like Spain, Arizona, Texas, best to keep it at around 30-60%. I keep my EV in a range of 30-70%. When I want to drive 200 miles in my M3 SR+ I charge to 80% overnight then charge the last 10-20% the morning off solar and the house battery. The battery is then warm (but not hot) and will be at 90%+ for only hours, not 10+ hours. I've only been to 100% five times, when wanting to do a family drive down to France, and when going to a few concerts, wanting a full battery to buy less at superchargers. Only been above 90% about 10 times including the 5 above.
And yeah, avoid Leaf cars for this reason - unless it's a steal of a price. And as you say when they went from 24kWh to 30kWh they went too quick and crammed it too much and the cells get too hot charging - no airflow/liquid between the cells - so literally no cooling!
Also - think about this. If you have a 60kWh battery and the car needs an average 20kW to move along - that's 3 hours to empty the battery (from full). That's not too bad - it's 0.33C (third power). Won't get too hot.
When you have a 30kWh battery but still need 20kW to move along - that's 1.5h to empty - greater strain on the battery - and 0.66C - that's worse stress on the battery. Then at the end you fast charge it. That's why Bjorn when trying his long range challenges (used OBD dongle) and saw Leafs climb from 35C - 50C and stay there and throttle the charging and driving power as battery would not cool down! It just cooked!

    •  3 місяці тому +1

Rarely it is worth replacing a single module in Leaf, because others are bad too. You need tu buy it somewhere and the degradation must be matched to the recipient battery. You are replacing a weak link in a chain and then the next weak link fails. Usually the back stack is worse and it is a lot ow work to take it out and apart and even more to put it back together if cells are swollen. So replacing all the cells is the best option. I fixed three Leafs by now and now fourth is on it's way.

Both of my EVs were bought at auction and I’d happily do it again. The issue here is that the buyer took a punt on a car with significant battery degradation which was asking for trouble.

Read and reset the fault codes in LeafSpy. The yellow symbol with exclamation mark is fault in electrical propulsion system.
If fault codes remain. Reset the 12V battery. Then reset the fault codes again.
Then try to charge the car again to 100%. Maybe the low cell will come around. They’re top balanced. 90% SOH is not bad for an old nissan leaf.

@@bartdekingwhile I'd agree with you there are maybe a half dozen model 3 on autotrader in the UK for less than 15k, and most of those are well over 100k miles (there's the odd one or two that are around 80k, but I'd be very suspicious of an unusually cheap one ). Realistically most people in the market for a 5k leaf definitely aren't cross-shopping with something more than 10k more expensive.

@johnsweet1915 100K miles for a leaf start to get to end of life. 100k on a model-3 is on a third of its life. They stay really good inside as well compared to other cars.

It’s an a 9 year old car that hasn’t had the best of care. Imagine a Ford focus at auction that had not once been serviced in its life. The rapid charging doesn’t seem to be what has degraded it so much, it’ll have been sitting at 100% most of the time. General faulty cell, once replaced, the SOH may take quite a jump up.
