If I had the time and money I'd love to take the most Mini-like sized car of the modern day like a Smart ForTwo and modify its styling to replicate the classic Mini JCW for shotz & gigglez xD
I find it hilarious that Moog started by wanting to out a scammer, and ended up with the best deal in Aus for a new MINI, and he just couldn't walk away at that point. So now we have this video - lol, legends.
Funniest part is if he gave it a shot, I think he would like it. No it's not the same as the old mini but it's exactly the kind of car he likes... He just didn't realize it because of the badge.
It will be fine, not sure which B16 they have but the mini is a lighter car than what the engine was designed for. The problem they have is when vtec jumps in theres a bump in power and you can tell its the wheels are spinning and loosing traction. These honda engines are setup soo well. It's crazy that such an old engine shifts wells high up in the rpms.
The peak of the BMW Minis was the 2007 S, super charged 6 speed manual. That thing wanted to eat its tires constantly. It was the perfect blend between the modern and the old school with lots of Analog dials but a modern look.
My dad autocrossed one and then my mom had an '05 as her daily for quite a while. I think those still had some of the original Mini DNA but they lost some of their soul when they went turbocharged and started getting even bigger and more "grown up".
My 2005 is the best or at least most fun car I've owned and I've had some nice cars... the mods list since has been massive and the next stage is bringing the power and traction up to the level of the brakes and handling upgrades... fun journey 😊
I completely agree, the 2007 S was peak BINI and I wish it was up for comparison, not the bloated 2022 model S. It would have been a much closer race in all tests!
I had a 13 for a couple of years, setup for autocross, it was a brilliant car. I've had the opportunity to drive an 06 S in autocross and it is also awesome. The 06 is a lot more raw and exciting to drive, has a lot of peak era (read late 90s ) BMW to it. The 13 was much quicker but still had some rawness to it. I test drove a 16 Mini S and found it to be quite boring and honestly, huge feeling. I'd love to have a vintage Mini or a first gen BMW MINI some day.
@@panikkos86 Same here buddy... My Dad had a Gen1 Integra with a D16 in the late 80s/early 90s, and that just had an unmistakable sound which was so much sweeter than the usual run-of-the-mill Fords and Vauxhalls of the time...
I've been watching MCM since the driveway build days, and all I can say is you guys deserve all the love you get for all the hard work. Looking forward to many more years of MCM!
I think this one is the jcw tuning kit, I noticed it didn’t have the brembos, I would wonder how the actual jcw model would hold up against the old one
@@Jacklumber86 You are right- its an S with the JCW option pack- Its not a factory JCW with the 171kw, this one would only have the 141kw. I dont believe it has the tuning kit either as they also have numbered plaques like the gen 1 and 2 tuning kits.
@@Sn0wsniper I didn’t watch their last vid about buying it, I was just going off what Marty said about jcw, that’s y I immediately thought it was the tuning kit as it didn’t have the brakes, maybe someone just fitted the aero kit to a cooper s, results would have been different if it was the jcw though like u said with the extra power and also with the go to woe with the brakes I’ve got a r53 with the jcw tuning kit myself
@5:08 - small correction; the Cooper S has a 7 speed dual clutch. The John Cooper Works cars have an 8 speed conventional auto. Same with the engine power; the Cooper S only has 141kW and does 0-100 in the mid-6s, the JCW has the higher power spec.
At one time we had 4 minis of different versions. Dad had a mini van, mum had a mini clubman, sister had a standard mini with sliding windows and I had a Cooper. Loved them. Great video 2x👍
Owned a few classic minis, one vxr powered, best driving experience of my life. Never driven a bmw mini, was always in the hater crew. But over the last few years they really have become modern classics. Taylor from auto Alex also has one of each….and loves both…and I can see why.
Yeah, but until you try one don't let actual lack of experience get in the way of having a strong opinion. But be aware Taylor's one is completely different car from this one. Post 2014 F56 model is when they changed to BMW drivetrain. NOTHING in the car - running gear, interior, exterior, anyhting - was carried over the generations after 2014. (Except the JCW R56 that continued a few years.) Those previous gens are unreliable and truly awful build quality. This BMW B48 engine can easily see 300hp.
yeah, plus the green mini has its own build series that some people might have seen... although strangely enough the series was aired on the worlds bestest 4x4 channel for reasons.
Owned a restored 1972 mini clubman and now a 2002 R53. The old mini turned more heads and had more character but the R53 is faster, more comfortable, and easier to live with. Comparing this new mini to a Vtec conversion kit car isn't really fair conversion but still fun to watch.
Totally agree. The R53 is only 3 years newer than Moog's classic Mini. It's lighter than current generation, manual box and sounds awesome because of the supercharger. I have a 2005 R53 and it's an absolute hoot
Even a R56 would have been better. Although the old mini has modded everything and bolt ons/tune...I didnt find it very fair to race a completely stock car that wieghs a ton more in this comparison. They should of did bolt ons and a tune for the big mini for it to be more fair.
I tried a jcw r53 and the performance was fantastic, the insurance was sky high though, bought a good unmodified late r53 instead, they're much closer to the original mini (I have owned a 92 cooper spi as well)
My wife and I have a 1963 austin mini cooper and a 2018 Mini Countryman S ALL4. I can tell you the DINAN stage 1 tune REALLY woke up or countryman and made the car SO SO SO much better. You WILL be impressed by the time you are done with this new mini build
that old mini need some SERIUS front suspension upgrades. when the V-TEC kicks in you se the front wheels get a mad tow in. no wonder it goes all over. it is so much tow in that you loos a ton of power.
The minitec subframes from America aren't great. They're much better ones you can get in the UK with far better geometry :) I've got a Watsons subframe. Taken it on track a lot and it handles just like a mini should!
I love that the old mini exists, I love what you’ve done to it, it’s super cool and one of my favourite series that you’ve done. BUT…. If I had to have one car (and I do) to drive to work, leave outside, take the kids to school, have fun on the motorway on ramp, pay to get serviced etc, then I have to take the new mini . I watch your channel to see cool cars that I don’t have the time, money, space or expertise to have, and it’s sooo good, thanks for what you do 👍🏻
I have a MY 2000 Rover Mini Cooper as my current daily, it's an amazing everyday car. It's cheap to tax and insure. It's great on fuel. I filled it up two weeks ago and have done nearly 200 miles, and it's just hit half a tank. It's so small that you can park it anywhere, so easy to work on (albeit quite cramped to get tools in), and it may be because I'm in the UK but getting parts for it isn't hard. Get yourself in the good books of a garage, and they'll let you bring the parts, and they'll do labour. I pull up to a caffeine and machine, and it's always put out front. Obviously, there are downsides. It's uncomfortable over speed humps, no crash protection really, no way to diagnose problems without doing the manual labour and obviously other things that come with owning an old British car. Being chumy with a garage is essential. Most places have turned me away because it actually requires manual work to do things. I paid £8500 for my Mini earlier this year, paid another £1000 to get it through its MOT, and it's been faultless. It has genuinely not let me down yet.
Everyone else already said everything but I'll repeat this has been a stellar vid from MCM for stacks of reasons. Mad,fun, honest and sorta hilarious. Like Top Gear without the stuff in the water between the old and the new.
As a BMW/Mini tech, I own 2 Minis: a 2019 Countryman All4 and a 2024 Cooper SE (electric). The All4 is great in the winter snow and the SE is a great city commuter that can really haul ass off the line. Love em.
@@DiscoFang I did actually find the suspension more forgiving in the SE, due to the extra weight it felt more settled. Try and get a test drive maybe if possible?
@@drewhender3999Yeah there’s compromises both ways. The suspension becomes moot because the range limits of the SE mean it can’t be used for a typical weekend trip 85kms north of the city to a wine and farm area. A place we stay is a few hundred meters from the end of the driveway. The owners intentionally did it that way to get the cars away from the house. No other realistic charge options within 40kms. So the SE is strictly a city car which makes the S more versatile.
I just started the video and it's so refreshing to see Moog actually excited. Also, the front alignment on the classic Mini is moving around when doing pulls. Might check that out.
I think it'd be a great experiment to recreate this video after the new Mini is modified. A whole book of mods thrown at it would probably make it a lot more fun to drive.
I hate to break it to you guys but that isn’t a John Cooper Works. It’s a Cooper S 189bhp sport pack with a GPF and unresponsive 7 speed dual clutch (emissions). The pre-lci had a 6 speed auto, much better feeling and durable, also sounds much better (no GPF). Manual is better still. Great video.
No, that was pure chance. We know these guys and they wouldnt stoop so low. We also know that that song is played on the radio all the time. Also, we are no strangers to loveeee...
Really excited to see when it gets down to modification time on the F56. I own one and I previously owned an R56, and they were both great little cars. Are they bigger than an original Mini? Absolutely. But when I'm on the roads here in the US, it's still properly small in comparison to other stuff on the road.
I owned a 2013 JCW. I actively suppressed imagining what a collision with an f150 would look like. Unfortunately you need size and weight to have a safe vehicle, and if you're mass producing a car, you need it to be safe (ish) to sell.
Loved the comparison test between the two cars. As the owner of a classic 1978 mini though the sound and smell of a classic just adds to the flavour that a Honda engine doesn’t have. Love the mini content and look forward to what you do to the cars next!
if the new mini is like a bmw, using the paddles doesnt put it in manual, you need to push the stick over to put the gearbox in sport mode, then it wont take control off you if you use the paddles
Confirming also from my girlfriend’s mini that to properly turn traction control off you need to hold the button for 5 seconds. If you combine this with pushing the gear lever over to full manual it’ll also hit limiter without auto up shifting 👍🏻
@@DiscoFang it’s also got the seats and the aero kit, it’s got some sort of added in jcw option kit The r53 it was called the tuning kit The r50 was called the sound kit Idk much about the f series and what its exactly called but that’s a cooper s with an added on jcw option package
Brilliant they not!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Engine issues etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Low on oil kiss bye to that engine. Old skool least the weak points are known!!!!!!
@@user-m-q9f Sir, the R53 is 22 years old now, it's older than me. We absolutely know the weakpoints by now and in this jaded "old vs new" segment, that is genuinely an old feeling car by now (in a good way). Old Minis you NEEDED to work on, how is this any different 🤣
If that's the very first of the new school with the 1.6, supercharged, I totally agree. They look great. The next gen up with 1.6 turbo still looked good and it went downhill from there in both size and looks.
Mine was 883cc but was so much fun. From starting it like a skateboard in the grocery store parking lot to oversteering after jumping a humpback bridge in the highlands letting it go pains me to this day. Now instead of Scotland I live in Texas, good luck finding another. F it, going on marketplace right. Now. Love you guys, bought a bmw one with the supercharger when they first came out but it just wasn’t the same. I bought bigger tires and wheels and swapped them without a jack, just lifted each corner and my mom swapped the wheels. Great memories.
Got a quadlock case for my phone and mount for my trooper from when they first joined up with quadlock. Just screwed the main mount into the door and then added the motor cycle mount to absorb the bumps and vibrations for driving off road. Very very good purchase
A minor nitpick: At 21:27 Marty mentions the stopping distances of the cars and references the weight difference of the cars This is a misconception I see all over the place but all things being equal except the mass of the car, the mass will not affect the stopping distance. A car that weights 2 tonnes will slow down at roughly 1g and so will a car that ways 0.7 tonnes. The deceleration, stopping distance and stopping time are all independent of mass. I think the reason people get this confused is because when speeding up the mass of a car makes a huge difference because the limiting factor for most cars is the power output and torque of the engine. However the brakes in a properly designed car can exert enough torque on the wheels to lock them at any speed, so the limiting factor becomes the grip of the tires, which is not affected by mass. The most obvious example of this is that a motorcycle weights like 10x less than a car, but it does not slow down 10x faster. If you really want to get technical about it, the more mass you have, the more kinetic energy you have to deal with at a given speed, but the more mass you have, the more normal force your tires exert on the road. Mass ends up canceling out.
So you telling me an empty car braking from 100km/h will stop in X distance, but put your 4 big mates from the gym in it and a boot full of kettle bells and repeat the test it will stop in the same distance?
"so the limiting factor becomes the grip of the tires, which is not affected by mass." What? Take an empty wheelbarrow, have a mate hold it up so it's only on the wheel, and pull it sideways. Put 50 kg of whatever in it, and try that again. If the grip of the tire hasn't changed then it'll be just as easy to slide as when empty.
@@aaronharley8691 Yes that is true. As long as the extra mass you're adding doesn't overwhelm the brakes, the car will slow down at about the same rate. In reality it's a bit more complicated, for example where you add the extra mass matters, if you add all of the mass in front of the front wheel of the car, it will absolutely perform worse
@@BobBobson What you're describing is friction, that does scale with mass because the normal force on the tire increases. However the coefficient of friction of that tire doesn't change when you add your 50 kg to the wheel barrow, meaning how sticky the tire is. That extra friction helps when you're trying to slow down, but because you've added more mass to the thing it's also harder to slow down, those two things cancel out.
Big time looking forward to seeing what you do with the F56, I've had mine for 5yrs and once you up the power and tweak the chassis they're unbelievable fun. Dropping weight out definitely helps on them aswell but as much as I love mine it'll never be an original
people rave on about binky but it will never finish. meanwhile there are already completed kswapped awd turbo monsters out there that would eat binky for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I own an r53 and I love it but when I rarely go to the dealer and get a brand new loaner I'm always impressed. The new ones are so comfortable, quick, and still quite small compared to most other cars in america. My r53 it is still truly "MINI" and everyone always comments when I park next to normal cars or especially big trucks how tiny it really is, yet it is roomy inside (I drove a 70 inch TV home once. The new mini is a bit more in line with small economy hatches, which are plenty small. I have never had a problem parking or navigating tight turns with the newest minis. The difference is that the driving experience and style is way above the other options. MINIs are quick, cool, and small. Most other cars can only boast one or two of the three (somewhat subjectively). When it is time to replace my r53 a 2019-2024 mini will probably be at the top of my list.
12:31 BTS ... It's no longer two blokes in a car. Hasn't been for a while. 3 support vehicles and I count 4 support people? ... I appreciate everything you 2 do to produce the great content you do. It cannot be easy doing this every day of your lives. 🙌
Week ago i raced with Honda civic 10th generation 1.5 turbo. My car was 1994 Eg but 2.0 F20B NA. I didn't had a good launch but still followed them with gain to reduce distance. So concluding that stuff is very clear once you modify your car with goodies like engine suspension etc its not just a car it way Better than concord you own simple.
As the owner of an F56 mini I'm curious to see what you do. One minor correction, your Cooper S has 192bhp from factory. Only the John cooper works has 230. Although a downpipe an intercooler and a tune will see get you close to the 300hp mark. I currently own a 2016 manual jcw running 310bhp and that's a tonne of fun. Still probably lightyears away from the classic in terms of fun but as an only car I'm happy with it. Also crazy to think in today's market the current mini is fairly small and light. Half the weight of some cars on sale today. Put it into perspective. It's half a tonne lighter than the current bmw m2
@@barsaf9989 pretty easy to mod. Space in the engine bay can be awkward for anything turbo related bit otherwise they're fine. May need some different tools. E-torx sockets for example. My main power mods are airtec intercooler, mmr inlet pipes, ngk 94201 spark plugs (same as b58) and I'm tuned for 99 octane fuel here in the uk
@@barsaf9989 Look up BMW's B48 engine and you'll see how much easy potential they have. The major issue with these cars is the lack of LSD. Torque steer is MONSTER! But even despite that they are a bargain enthusiasts car. Probably because the previous gen Peugeot powered models had such woefully unreliable drivetrains. (Edit: That is, bargain priced because people assume the F56 are even slightly related to the previous R56 and R53 Minis.)
@@DiscoFang that's exactly what I thought. I've never looked into mini before because I assumed they all had issues. Because a "BMW mini" covers all "new" minis, including the early 2000s minis, I assumed these would have similar issues. However, after doing some research, there are still some downsides to these f56 besides the LSD. Lack of steering feel, understeer, weird throttle mapping, transmission calibration, and the size and weight. How come these weigh so much? An mx5 and gr86 weigh much less and still pass safety regulations? Also another big turn off for me is the way the front end looks. It just looks so disproportionate to the rest of the car. Sides and back look great, but the front looks weird, especially with the large grill outline.
@@barsaf9989All stuff you’ve read. Drive one. Just avoid the DCTs. The Aisin autos are far superior. Throttle mapping?? Wth does that even mean to driving it? Nothing wrong with the steering and the car proportions are completely different in the flesh than photos or videos. They feel like a proper well made higher end car too. That may def be part of the weight thing. If you’re expecting the rattly, light clangy doors and sub-par interiors of the prev gens you’ll be disappointed.
Been building my R53 for a few years and it is more fun than basically any of the fast cars I've owned.. but lots of $$ and parts.. but then the build is half the fun 😊😊
This was the best example of the best four wheel drive channel breaking down the barriers and delving into unfamiliar territory! Good on you boys always room for growth!😁
Interesting philosophy, modern Mini isn't a Mini because it's BMW built? Meanwhile a JDM made and Honda swapped Mini is some how more Mini then the modern ones?
I think it's about the size. Yet Corolla is still Corolla, Civic is still Civic, Golf is still Golf. Fiat 500 is still Fiat 500, Range Rover is still Range Rover. It's astonishing how btthurt people get about a badge. Particularly, and especially the British.
The clutch in the earlier BMW minis will take the flywheel with it when it goes out. My local transmission shop said that Valeo spoke out against their own design for BMW and actually made a single mass conversion and it makes such a brilliant difference. For anyone with a manual BMW mini that might be getting close to needing a clutch replacement. Not sure how it'd work on yours Marty but I'm sure theirs a good workaround for the newer models
Great video guys! But i want to mention smth as an owner of F56 JCW. To make it run faster, shift faster, turns faster - at first you should use manual mode for the gearbox, turn on sport traction control mode, and be more active with the brakes before turns because obviously it has a lot of weight in the nose and you should treat it as fwd turbo car- therefore more twist it into the corners. It won’t be ideal of course - but experience could be much better and you’ll get the point of this car more deeply. Ah and of course time will be better😀
I currently own an '08 R56 and '17 F55 D. Love both of them to bits, R56 is definitely more fun but the F55 is practical and still has the iconic mini looks
The Classic Mini is my favorite, but I myself own a modified R58 Coupé JCW. When Moog said what classic owners thought about the modern ones I was looking forward to looking the other way, what modern owners think about the classics, because most of us (who are also car enthusiasts) adore the classic way more. I'd never swap in my Coupé, not even for the perfect classic. There are too many memories attached to this car. But I sure wish she had a classic sibling.
Many of us who own classic minis and early BMW minis (R50) are happy that both exist.. However, my preference is a classic mini that is MK3 or earlier. All that MPI, bonnet release, reverse lights, hazard lights, side indicators.... Extravagance that detracts from the pureness of a MK3
Some may have already commented this, but with the F56 Mini, if you put it into sport mode this will not apply to the gearbox only suspension and pedal feel. For the gearbox to be in sport mode you have to push the level to the left. Then it will hold the gear and shift faster, which should also overcome the lag you felt when launching.
The R53 Mini (The first generation BMW manufactured Mini Cooper S) was entirely worthy of the Mini badge imo. WAY smaller than this new Mini, amazing handling, lightweight, great exhaust and supercharger noises, bare bones and just a joy to drive and actually very capable on the track. Would love to see you guys do a similar video to this with one some day.
Being a genuine car enthusiast, that’s had lots of different types of cars, and driven lots of others. Id love to have a go in an original mini. It’s definitely on the bucket list.
BMW did a pretty good job with designing the new Mini. It couldn't be as small as the older models for today's car market. Both cars are awesome and I can't wait to see what you do with the new model in terms of modifications .
My first car was a 1984 mini 25. Loved that car soo much and miss it. Did London to Brighton mini run twice and it was my daily driver for 6 years before I made the mistake of selling it.
The old mini will always shine in my eyes...in JDM engine?!?AMAZING.. I actually miss that old mini, the first time I saw it is the time you build it...still love the old cars with modified engine
Still have fond memories of my first car - a 1970 BMC Mini K 1100 (Australian spec). It had a ported head, tacho etc and when everything was in tune went pretty well. It had the classic Smiths 90 MPH speedo (you get to figure out your speed by averaging the wavering pointer!) and it could hit the stop on the speedo BUT the brakes were not up to the task at those sort of speeds and so not something you should do on public roads. Handling was fun - feels a bit like a go cart! On the negatives: Safety none, rust was a problem as it leaked like a sieve and I spent more time working on it than driving it (although sometimes that was fun)!
Thanks guys, that was fun, especially with the tape measures was funny ,As a UK big mini fan original who like most older people probably grew up driving them in car parks learning to drive like I did. Definitely a brown water situation with the new one, but they're not very reliable, especially the old ones. They're not that fast either. Even with the top spec I have an old '07 civic Type R and it would still outperform it and handle better, I'm biased but I had one parked next to me in and mine still looks better because the new one is a maxi and there's too many of them around. But I get the fact that they are an entry into a little hot hatch. It's just it's not British so it's not a mini. It's a maxi. Sitting the original minis fly around race tracks in the UK is the best thing ever. Look it up on UA-cam. The back legs coming out is hilarious
Love the content !! New mini is used in a British junior championship…..also get an xhp map for the box, it can be loads more aggressive !! I think you should do a stripped rear, caged, hybrid turbo build on the new mini, and a 4wd conversion on the old mini !!
You should have done a drag race with the classic mini sitting at around 5,500 rpm in second, it would have been interesting to see the difference between them with the low down non-VTEC torque removed. As a Civic Type R owner, the sound of that shift into VTEC is addictive though. The classic Mini would feel much more potent if you get it mapped to lower the VTEC engagement to around 4500 rpm, too.
Im still driving a VT commodore daily. Before that, I had a VY commodore for 6 and half years. Being a mechanic, I get to play with the newer and older cars. Hands down, I prefer the older cars, less babysitting technology, more feedback, just you and the car.
I still like the F generation of minis, but will say the R56 JCW 6spd is the modern mini to have. Absolutely loved mine. Even had a R56 N/A 6spd and limited slip and that car too was amazing. I still really want to experience a OG mini though. It's right up my alley.
It’s very tempting to get an old mini and making it mid engine, aside from mounting the engine and associated suspension. Dropping a Honda engine with the transmission would work easily. Back in the 90’s I worked at a small service shop and we built a tube framed chassis and dropped a civic engine and auto trans. I’ve always wanted to do the same to a del-sole and the mini looks like a good option too.
Brilliant vid guys - love the fact that the two of you are about an additional 30% of the weight of the "real" mini... (not trying to be rude, honest...)
This battle of the minis is so epic! 🏁 It's like watching David vs Goliath but in car form. 😄 I love how the classics can still keep up with the new tech! Who knew Honda engines could give BMW a run for their money? 🔥
The initial delay on launch acceleration is due to the factory torque management strategy. It's certainly possible to alter these tables. We have this done via remote tuning for some of our customers production spec race cars. The person we use is based in germany from Bmw motorsport but I believe Evolve Technik and a few other companies in Sydney have the software.
I had a classic mini with 1.3 metro turbo engine in it. Felt so fast and fun, but reality was slow lol. Didn't matter though the car was so horrid in many ways but as something to belt about and have fun in it made it all worth it. I dailyed that car for a year, smiles per miles for sure. Oh my... The sound of the starter motor on that B16 takes me straight back to the early 90s... What a sweet sound!

As an owner of a 1993 Mini Cooper and a 2019 JCW Mini I have been hoping the crew would do a modern Mini. Excited to see more videos
@@Sn0wsniper I didn’t watch their last vid about buying it, I was just going off what Marty said about jcw, that’s y I immediately thought it was the tuning kit as it didn’t have the brakes, maybe someone just fitted the aero kit to a cooper s, results would have been different if it was the jcw though like u said with the extra power and also with the go to woe with the brakes

Owned a few classic minis, one vxr powered, best driving experience of my life. Never driven a bmw mini, was always in the hater crew. But over the last few years they really have become modern classics. Taylor from auto Alex also has one of each….and loves both…and I can see why.
The people who hate on modern Minis have never driven one.
Do yourself a favour, get a spin in a well sorted R53. You'll want one.

Gen 1 new mini would have been a better choice. Supercharged, lighter weight, and much more fun to drive than the bloated 3rd gen. Just my opinion.

Although the old mini has modded everything and bolt ons/tune...I didnt find it very fair to race a completely stock car that wieghs a ton more in this comparison. They should of did bolt ons and a tune for the big mini for it to be more fair.
I tried a jcw r53 and the performance was fantastic, the insurance was sky high though, bought a good unmodified late r53 instead, they're much closer to the original mini (I have owned a 92 cooper spi as well)

that old mini need some SERIUS front suspension upgrades. when the V-TEC kicks in you se the front wheels get a mad tow in. no wonder it goes all over. it is so much tow in that you loos a ton of power.
The minitec subframes from America aren't great. They're much better ones you can get in the UK with far better geometry :) I've got a Watsons subframe. Taken it on track a lot and it handles just like a mini should!
@BenExell thx for info I gotta look up Watsons now. Down the internet rabbit hole I go....
My dad had a 1993 Italian Job mini in red . It was so much fun and I have always loved the mini. Was always around them growing up.
I watch your channel to see cool cars that I don’t have the time, money, space or expertise to have, and it’s sooo good, thanks for what you do 👍🏻
The original Mini, particularly in a modified form, is a better enthusiasts car. The modern Mini is a better car.
Love em.
During the racing I was wondering how an SE would go. Their used pricing has plummeted.
@DiscoFang I has an SE before my Cooper S, fantastic little car and up to 60mph it felt faster than the Cooper S
@@drewhender3999I’d love an SE as a city car. I have an S but the suspension is so unforgiving on the highways it’s only used as a city car anyway.

Was also a cooper s with the jcw tuning kit, didn’t look like a genuine jcw mini would may have also changed the results
Confirming also from my girlfriend’s mini that to properly turn traction control off you need to hold the button for 5 seconds. If you combine this with pushing the gear lever over to full manual it’ll also hit limiter without auto up shifting 👍🏻
Yeah I think they haven’t slid the gear lever over, it shouldn’t lag that hard with the gearbox in sports mode

A minor nitpick: At 21:27 Marty mentions the stopping distances of the cars and references the weight difference of the cars
This is a misconception I see all over the place but all things being equal except the mass of the car, the mass will not affect the stopping distance.
@@aaronharley8691No he’s not saying that. Just that weight isn’t the only factor. In your example, tyres will be the main factor regardless of weight.

310hp is really good. What did you do to it? Are these f56 minis easy to mod?
@@barsaf9989 pretty easy to mod. Space in the engine bay can be awkward for anything turbo related bit otherwise they're fine. May need some different tools. E-torx sockets for example.

The clutch in the earlier BMW minis will take the flywheel with it when it goes out. My local transmission shop said that Valeo spoke out against their own design for BMW and actually made a single mass conversion and it makes such a brilliant difference. For anyone with a manual BMW mini that might be getting close to needing a clutch replacement. Not sure how it'd work on yours Marty but I'm sure theirs a good workaround for the newer models
Neither is a 'True Mini' 😥
I'm so glad I watched until the end, this ended in a much more positive place than I had feared it might. Great work!
Is it really a classic mini with a honda engine in it?
Great video guys! But i want to mention smth as an owner of F56 JCW. To make it run faster, shift faster, turns faster - at first you should use manual mode for the gearbox, turn on sport traction control mode, and be more active with the brakes before turns because obviously it has a lot of weight in the nose and you should treat it as fwd turbo car- therefore more twist it into the corners. It won’t be ideal of course - but experience could be much better and you’ll get the point of this car more deeply. Ah and of course time will be better😀
I love this proper automotive journalism at its finest!!! You guys are amazing
The Vtec sound coming out of the mini makes me smile

They were designed at Longbridge.
My first car was a 1984 mini 25. Loved that car soo much and miss it. Did London to Brighton mini run twice and it was my daily driver for 6 years before I made the mistake of selling it.
That vtec sound! Holly moly thats insane 🤤🤤
I had the r56 Mini Cooper S and it was just a blast to drive. Also felt extremely small on US roads. Can’t imagine driving the classic here

MINI Car Mods!
Looking forward to seeing some more driveway mods as that’s very much where I’m at!
Great work, lads! 👏🏽
This felt old school and really fun to watch. Thanks guys
I still like the F generation of minis, but will say the R56 JCW 6spd is the modern mini to have. Absolutely loved mine. Even had a R56 N/A 6spd and limited slip and that car too was amazing. I still really want to experience a OG mini though. It's right up my alley.

the Next frame: 2 STEPPPP!!!!!!
To me this shows up how boring new cars have become compared to how exciting older cars were. Great watching as always

The fuel consumption was nuts for a 1.3 lol.
I had a 1963 with a 1310cc Weber carb and it was awesome.
Still my biggest regret not keeping it.
