He is unbiased, not taking the general opinion of the "car guy public", which is blind hatred for the cybertruck and Tesla in general. Also not forced by sponsors to say what they want him to say. He takes a clear approach and does it efficiently because he has so many years of experience that reviewing in front of a camera is just an afternoon activity. • @C.I...
      @C.I... 2 місяці тому +809

      I'm not sure they were banned on pedestrian safety grounds - I believe they just became redundant when the US government started allowing smaller and non-standardised headlight designs on cars, and no longer specified a minimum headlight height.
      Pop up headlights were to allow a large, standard-shaped headlight to be lower when not in use, while meeting the minimum height requirement when in use.

      Pop up headlights disappeared as DRL became a requirement. The same regulation changes that brought DRLs also removed the height requirement for headlights that had made pop ups popular in the first place.
      Pop ups were already well on their way out when safety regulations around pedestrian collisions became a thing.

    This is what I loved about James on Top Gear. He would understand the concepts of design and the tiny details like making the panels slightly curved instead of flat to make it appear correct visually. Or how flat panels require perfect alignment, or it sticks out negatively.

    • @occashares
      @occashares Місяць тому +3

      The curve reduces flexing

    • @ravecrab
      @ravecrab Місяць тому +2

      @@occashares I'd argue it actually builds some flexing into the material - a panel is put under tension by its fixings at the edges, which is where the crumpled look comes from with something too flat.

    • @occashares
      @occashares Місяць тому +1

      @@ravecrab I suppose we are looking at the issue from two different perspectives. When making air conditioning ducting two folds were made diagonally to form a cross on the center. This would reduce drumming and flexing due to resonance. It was simple to do with a sheet metal folder. Putting a convex or concave curve is much more difficult requiring a press. Having a panel being flat it will resonate freely, putting it under tension will only raise the resonate frequency.

    I'm not saying that the "curvature/"oblateness"" of the car isn't done to make it look better, BUT I would be surprised if it isn't also at least partially motivated for "technical reasons". I,e, "absolutely flat" panels are MUCH more susceptible to "uncontrolled buckling", since they have "equal stiffness" in "multiple directions". But by "cupping" the surfaces ever so slightly You make the panels significantly stiffer AND control the "buckling".
