I'm not sure they were banned on pedestrian safety grounds - I believe they just became redundant when the US government started allowing smaller and non-standardised headlight designs on cars, and no longer specified a minimum headlight height. Pop up headlights were to allow a large, standard-shaped headlight to be lower when not in use, while meeting the minimum height requirement when in use.

I think the genius of James May (and the former case of Top Gear) is perfectly highlighted in this video. Despite the Cybertruck being out for sometime, James brings a totally new perspective and conveys in simple ways (e.g. a ruler against the side). True expert and entertainer!
Totally agree! The rule, and the lack of a feeling for a knob to adjust temperature, air speed, and more. Call me a traditionalist, but I prefer a vehicle with knobs and sticks over one with flat surfaces everywhere.

Let's not forget he is also a gifted musician so those qualities permeate everything he does. Long May he reign !!
This is what I loved about James on Top Gear. He would understand the concepts of design and the tiny details like making the panels slightly curved instead of flat to make it appear correct visually. Or how flat panels require perfect alignment, or it sticks out negatively.
@@occashares I'd argue it actually builds some flexing into the material - a panel is put under tension by its fixings at the edges, which is where the crumpled look comes from with something too flat.
@@ravecrab I suppose we are looking at the issue from two different perspectives. When making air conditioning ducting two folds were made diagonally to form a cross on the center. This would reduce drumming and flexing due to resonance. It was simple to do with a sheet metal folder. Putting a convex or concave curve is much more difficult requiring a press. Having a panel being flat it will resonate freely, putting it under tension will only raise the resonate frequency.
The best thing about the Cybertruck is how it's provided an endless succession of memes and jokes to brighten our days, so thank you, Elon, for that. I both enjoy and giggle at the fact that it looks like it was ripped out of an 80's B sci-fi/action movie.
I appreciate that within the first few seconds of the video you are inside the Cybertruck, driving it. It's such a simple thing that almost ALL other reviewers (of anything!) get wrong - a long-winded boring introduction is almost standard, and excruciating.

8:00 I too am literate and read from the top of the page down instead of the closest line out. My favorite is when the signs get poetic like "ahead bridge low, trucks no"
In New Zealand it’s done the same and as a kid I was always confused why it said “ahead crossing” until I inquired to my mum and apparently you’re supposed to read the bottom one first since it’s closer.
This is where essentially every other car reviews fail - they have the historical knowledge to be able to draw on. This is the best short review I've seen of the Cyber Truck.
Someone on another channel summed up the Cybertruck very well - "The sort of car a divorced dad would buy to impress his 17 year-old daughter's friend". Probably because that's exactly the sort of person who designed it...
yes, and then he'd be upset that it It DIDN'T actually impress his daughters 17 year-old friend, because she would say "urgh, it's very chunky, and looks like it has been designed by a child" and then she'd go off with the football player in his ferrari.
I'm not saying that the "curvature/"oblateness"" of the car isn't done to make it look better, BUT I would be surprised if it isn't also at least partially motivated for "technical reasons". I,e, "absolutely flat" panels are MUCH more susceptible to "uncontrolled buckling", since they have "equal stiffness" in "multiple directions". But by "cupping" the surfaces ever so slightly You make the panels significantly stiffer AND control the "buckling". Best regards.

James talking about Fiat Pandas after how many years, just doesn't get old
I wouldn’t mind a fiat panda.
With home cushions on the back seat 😂
Fiat Multipla
As soon as he started talking about smaller car, I blurted out fiat paaanda
Dacia Sandero 😆
I found myself just expecting a cutaway to him, Clarkson and Hammond crafting a Panda-sized "CyberTruck", made out of scrap metal from discarded kitchen appliances
"Wowsers Trousers" is the most James May thing that James may has ever said
Dear James May, just finished watching "One for the Road". I watched the end with tears in my eyes. Half of my life was filled with Top Gear and the Grand Tour and i have absolutely loved it. You have said in final minutes "Hopefully we have given you some happiness". You did more then that. I have watched all episodes more then once. They always gave me a smile and a laugh. In good days and bad days. I would like to thank you, Richard and Jeremy with all my heart. Thank you!! I will miss your adventures. Greets Etienne

But the camera man burping is all good?
It’s just a matter of adjusting levels in post production or adjusting the noise gate to pickup louder and closer sounds (James’ voice) and rejecting quieter further sounds (the wind).
This settles it. I now want Car test drives/reviews from all 3 of the trio like the old days of Top Gear and Grand Tour from each of their UA-cam channels while promoting their products and other projects.
Or.... They could just make the show
@@702KingofVegas Why would they go through the trouble of dealing with an intermediary like Amazon or the BBC? I swear the Fiat Panda is the car by which James judges every other vehicle.
I was timing it to see when we’d hear Fiat Panda. 😂 just over 3 min.
It's James May, I wouldn't be surprised if he mentioned the Fiat Panda in his wedding vows.
Strangely enough, it really does make sense. Just to make sure - he meant the very first generation of Fiat Panda, produced till the early 2000’s.
didn't he say fiat multipla?
Going "Look at that Dodge over there" and then forgetting to actually film it is the most James May thing ever. I love it.

This is what I loved about James on Top Gear. He would understand the concepts of design and the tiny details like making the panels slightly curved instead of flat to make it appear correct visually. Or how flat panels require perfect alignment, or it sticks out negatively.
The curve reduces flexing

"the yoke makes you feel like you're flying an airliner"
-Editor shows a picture of the one brand of airliners that DON'T use a yoke
I'm not saying that the "curvature/"oblateness"" of the car isn't done to make it look better, BUT I would be surprised if it isn't also at least partially motivated for "technical reasons". I,e, "absolutely flat" panels are MUCH more susceptible to "uncontrolled buckling", since they have "equal stiffness" in "multiple directions". But by "cupping" the surfaces ever so slightly You make the panels significantly stiffer AND control the "buckling".
Best regards.
