Sometimes you get stung and I have before but this is a fantastic car to say you’ve owned. Keep an eye on the rattle and enjoy it. Just put it down as a characteristic of the car.
Worth trying with the dealer but not expecting too much luck tbh. Only failure that I saw from the video was the tyre. MOT is for the day the vehicle was presented, for all we know the previous owner could have another one of these, swapped the alloy in question over for the test, drove home with a clean bill and swapped it back and traded the car in. Engine noise isn't obvious to those who don't know what the engines are meant to sound like so possibly just missed it. Probably can get a small contribution to the repair of the car but it'll be

Joel, i would recommend getting the essentials fixed and just enjoy the car. From experience, that noise will continue for years and takes a long time to get worse. Even with a seized engine that car will still be worth a fair chunk of cash for parts. Enjoy.
About 4k for the repairs? Ask the dealer for 2k as he must have known the engine problem and as for the MOT!!!! Then have the work done and you’ll have a well sorted Maserati for a lot less than 10k.
I’d feel inclined to get a couple of thousand back from the dealer and then go ahead and bring the car up to a really good standard. I’ve often bought cheaply but then spend on refurbishing so it’s almost up to nearly new standards.
@@MarkGelderland That is why I have stuck with Audi and VW tdi vehicles for over 40 years. Never had any expensive repairs, despite around 300,000 miles on 2 of them. It is just refreshing to see someone bold enough to do these things when everyone else would just turn around. Thank you for being you and please, don't stop. You're awesome man.
You know, Hoovie (Tyler Hoover of Hoovies Garage) got to the point where he was buying expensive Lambos that were all sorted and he really no longer much to do videos about. His MO had been to buy a hooptie and take it to the Wizard (who he invented and made rich) and do videos on all the work and money to fix them. So he started buying hoopties again. If you want views, get cars that need work and show people how to fix them and how much it costs. I liked this video very much.
One problem with "sell this, buy a nicer one", is that you're going to end up with another unknown car - which may seem better than the current one, but a month or two into your ownership is no better than the current one. Sure, it may have lower miles or fresher tyres, but you don't know if it's got some other issues that you can't tell until a while later. It's a difficult one, for sure. I''m quite glad I don't have to make the decision. If you can get a bit back from the dealer, that would certainly help.
Several people have had succes with installing an Accusump to get around the cam variator issue. Problem with those is that between starting the car and the oil being up to pressure, you are running the cam variators unpressurised for a few seconds, which makes them rattle. The idea behind the Accusump is that prior to turning the engine over, with the accusump you can pressurise the oil system and with that the cam variators are filled and up to pressure before they are being cranked over. Makes a lot of sense.... And costs less than that 4K...
Just a small suggestion , large engines tend to have an electric oil pump to get the oil.pressure up prior to starting , so an added pump and some plumbing could fix your issue
Many dealers have a dodgy MOT guy that can whip up a pass certificate and then when you go and get the next test done a year later by a reputable garage you discover the horrors...
Yes... you discover that you've been lucky not to have had an unintended trip through hedge sometime in the last twelve months... and got away with it...
The least you do Joel is contact the dealer see what his reaction is, if its not a possitive responce then mention contacting trading standards that should provoke a responce! good luck 👍🏴
Take the car to a reputable MOT station and see what they come back with. Is the tyre egged as a result of the cut? Has the cut gone through to the cords, because if not, then it isn't an MOT failure, only an advisory
Personally I would try to send the car back if not for the issues but more because of the shadiness of the dealer. £500 for a set of decent brand name part worn tyres with 5mm + and the exhaust clamps fixed, drive it for a bit and move it on. It's pointless pumping £4000 into it - the day after you do, the gearbox will shit itself or some other catastrophe. Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em!
If you bought the car unseen I'm sure there must be a degree of planned jeopardy with it. High Peak does it every week, so there must be a decent return on the content.
Looks quite nice...I was lucky enough to have to drive for a day a 1969 Quattroporte (I was 19 yrs old) The day before I had been driving a Plymouth Satellite....thought that sounded and looked good. But a 69....Brilliant....to drive and to look at.
Up to you what you do, but as other people have said, take the car back to the dealer. Thing is, any vehicle sold from a dealer needs to meet trading standards and be fit for purpose. In practice, this means that you have around 3 months to take a car back if it's got any big problems, like this cam variator, and the dealer really doesn't have a leg to stand on. You may even be able to return the car up to 6 months later. Also, sounds like the MOT could possibly be a bit dodgy, but certainly was quite lapse!
Difficult one. Definitely get in touch with the seller Joel. On the other hand after the work is complete you have a well sorted beast of a car!!!! Good luck
Suggestion: Do the essentials, rust proof it, then drive it for 12 months. Items like the tyres and exhaust clamps should be replaced by the dealer at no cost to you.
I don't even think at £6k it was a cheap car, if anything you've given a fair amount more than what it's worth. There's one on Auto Trader for the same money.. it's done less miles, is newer, is HPI clear and has history. If you can get the dealer to give your money back I certainly would.
Sorry, but on narrow roads driving that aggressively seems a little silly. Take it a bit easier, especially as you're not sure if the car has any unseen issues. Just saying.
What a great car :) stunning interior, wheels polished to perfection, not just sprayed.... Over 100k miles and £6k pp...I think u have got off lightly! - Personally, if engine wear item cant b fixed under £2k, I would run it with best oil u can buy for a yr or two and enjoy stunning sound and the sublime interior - Cheap bit of paintwork, tyres, clamps etc and enjoy :) How's your dads 125 3.0 going? - Fancy one of those - fancy yours too, but a bigger gamble
Enjoyed the video. My view would be either send it back (if you can!) or enjoy it and run it to the ground i.e. just spend the bare minimum on it to keep it going until it dies. The worst mistake would be spending a fortune on it, after which you still have a high mileage, Cat S, Zero history car worth no more than you paid for it.
I very much want one of those😍😍 Hopefully next year I'll have the funds for the car, plus a very very healthy contingency fund for anything that goes wrong or needs maintaining to keep it healthy. Wanted one for years and my UA-cam playsuit is just full of Quattroporte videos. Even the ones with tales of woe aren't putting me off😂😂
check mot station that issued the mot using v5 code, give them a call and say this mot is dodgy and ask if they want to repair it or you ring vosa :) They will 99%. Got my jaguar with a dodgy mot and then they changed brakes, various suspension components and two tyres. Bill was about 2k and I could smell the crap in their pants through the phone when I called. If you ring vosa they will reinspect and give them point for each item and rapidly shut their mot station down.
I wouldn’t buy a QP without Ash doing a PPI first 😅 but this higher mile cat S with no history proves these are far from the absolute money pits everyone thinks. Exceptional cars for the money at the moment… just get a PPI first! 😅
Eventually you’ll get a misfire code and you’ll have low power. The car won’t blow up but you’ve got to fix it. Honestly it’s so much better than the V10 M5 with the explosive rod bearings. I just had my QP GT S repaired for $4,400.
I thought the noise might have been hydraulic tappets as I’ve had VW and Audi cars that made that noise. Engines can be noisy on start up anyway. If you like the car I would get the problems fixed.
Good! Just do that and the sticky plastics, and you’ll have a sweet Mazzer for many miles! Have a look around for prices for the variator job, could get much cheaper I do think.
Personally if l bought a car unseen (l've done so & motorbikes too umpteen times) and it went belly up then l would not complain, come on! There are huge positives, the exterior panels are great, beautiful interior in ace condition, consumables as anticipated and it's a drop dead gorgeous car. Have the engine fixed.
Not when it's a business to business sale. He bought it for his UA-camr business so Consumer Rights Act does not apply as he is a business and not a consumer!
I have had a 2005 Quattroporte Executive 4.2 litre Cambio Corsa (Duo Select automated manual) (with Formula Dynamics chips for throttle control and increase from 400HP to 425HP) for 10 years; and a 2012 GranCabrio Sport 4.7 litre with ZF auto box for five years. The Cabrio looks stunning (of course) and attracts comments shouted across the street of "Rich bastards" - nice for my 10 and 14 year old sons in the back. The Quattroporte is almost unnoticeable. Yet it drives faster and handles way better and more easily than the Cabrio. Plus the Quattroporte has far better seats, upholsterery (Poltrona Frau leather), wood and leather and alcantara interior. Sure, the analogue TV doesn't work anymore (all digital now) and the in-console telephone is quite redundant now. While top speed is supposed to be 275kmh (isn't that a supercar?), the speed limiter in the infotainment system (bit of a silly place to put it) reigned the car in at 250kmh. No one, even the dealer, doesn't know how to cancel this - seems no one actually uses the car for what it was built for - high speed luxury travel for a family of five.
Number plates from Halfords, that in itself on a supercar is massive alarm bells. It's come from Solihull, Postcode B90, I live in the area. So, it really depends on from where in that area it came from. It's either and ex-footballer or, erm, somebody who doesn't care about cars, only their image....
@M539Restorations had the "bad idea" to recover one Maserati...rebuild the engine to the millimeter and didn't last long...but, good luck :) I really love these different cars that nobody has but it's a money pit
I would do the latter get it fixed go on and enjoy an adventure with the car, whatever you do don't scrap it! Cars like that need people who are willing to give life back and be driven how it's meant to be driven.
I work in a mot garage and had to work on a Maserati coupe suspension. Every nut and bolt was such shit quality and was seized and had to be cut and replaced. Strangely they were mostly in stock meaning it was a regular problem. The ones that weren’t available were replaced by BMW equivalents in the end the whole front suspension had to be replaced and it took 3 days to do a job that takes 1/2 a day on most cars.
I’d cut my losses and sell it asap. The niggles will ruin your enjoyment of the car. As an owner of many Italian cars past and present, one thing you never do is buy them sight unseen. Especially Ferrari’s and Maserati’s. Look forward to the next episode!
Very interested to see how you get on with the dealer - I just bought a car that a few days after delivery (and under warranty) had complete failure and the dealer is trying to refuse fixing or refunding! Did you buy on a credit card by chance?
Had same problem with the same car but here in Italy things are much cheaper. Spent just over one thosand euro for parts and labour, the difference between here and the UK is here same car with 150k miles will cost around 25k euro 😞
See how the dealer reacts, if he is willing to refund half the repair costs, not so bad, the blow on the exhaust should not have been missed, tyre could have been overlooked by mistake, the car is not really that bad for its age, if the dealer is unhelpful just get a refund and mention about the sloppy MOT.
Once did a cam variator on an alfa. Spoke to the dealers about how to get it off the cam and they said they don't they throw the cam and variator away and replace both.
Joel, I'd say go back to dealer get your money back, add some and go to dacia dealer, get yourself new sandero or jogger or maybe duster, 1.0 petrol 3 cylinder + lpg = best offer for for your hard earned money, however if you decide to keep her = only begining for more and more money throw into garbage trash
Still a very inexpensive Maserati, I would give it a couple of oil changes and filters with a few hundred miles inbetween , and Transmission fluid gravity drain (Not force flush straight away) and refil see if that helps for a start, then look at folks who can make custom exhausts and spray any accesible electric connectors with suitable cleaner.
What do you think I should do? 😅

get michelin tyres on the back (all round ideally) ...... transforms the ride !
That’s the plan!
Or the right model of Continentals or Goodyear. Which as the Tyre Reviews channel has shown, also make some great performance tyres.
Good luck
My 2018 Ford F150 ecoboost did this noise too. Had to repair the engine due to damaged CAM phasers.
Got rid of it a few months ago.
Probably not a sport gt? There’s not a lot of them left on the road
Sorry, but on narrow roads driving that aggressively seems a little silly. Take it a bit easier, especially as you're not sure if the car has any unseen issues. Just saying.
agreed !
What a great car :) stunning interior, wheels polished to perfection, not just sprayed....
Over 100k miles and £6k pp...I think u have got off lightly! - Personally, if engine wear item cant b fixed under £2k, I would run it with best oil u can buy for a yr or two and enjoy stunning sound and the sublime interior - Cheap bit of paintwork, tyres, clamps etc and enjoy :)
How's your dads 125 3.0 going? - Fancy one of those - fancy yours too, but a bigger gamble
Hes a knowledgable guy..straight.😊
Keep it and go on your big European adventure. Don't worry about every noise on an old car.
It might be worth changing the oil. Someone might have put thicker oil in to try to stop the rattling.
If you had a tenner for every time the guy checking it said obviously, it’d cover the whole repair bill.
Try Liqui Moly Ceratec, it should protect engine internals on cold start with ceramic coating and posibly quiet down start rattle.
You should have watched m359 restorations before buying.
I very much want one of those😍😍 Hopefully next year I'll have the funds for the car, plus a very very healthy contingency fund for anything that goes wrong or needs maintaining to keep it healthy. Wanted one for years and my UA-cam playsuit is just full of Quattroporte videos. Even the ones with tales of woe aren't putting me off😂😂
STOP STOP STOP ...
@@295walk why why why?
check mot station that issued the mot using v5 code, give them a call and say this mot is dodgy and ask if they want to repair it or you ring vosa :) They will 99%. Got my jaguar with a dodgy mot and then they changed brakes, various suspension components and two tyres. Bill was about 2k and I could smell the crap in their pants through the phone when I called. If you ring vosa they will reinspect and give them point for each item and rapidly shut their mot station down.
As you say , how did that pass an MOT with the tire issue and exhaust mount; looks as if the dealer needs to do some repairs !
I'd sell her for spares if they are getting hard to find
Good luck with this one Joel👍
Loving this car man! Dont know loads about them, but I love their vibe 👌🏼
Definitely see if you can get the dealer to pay half then you have a great car still for very cheap and everything is next to perfect on it
Im so jealous this is the perfect roadtrip car even with the issues id kill for one of these
I wouldn’t buy a QP without Ash doing a PPI first 😅 but this higher mile cat S with no history proves these are far from the absolute money pits everyone thinks.
Put some STP engine flush then a Castro synthetic oil.
...i feel your pain dude,I experienced something similar with my 5.0v10 phaeton
Because of distance selling rules you can get a full refund anyway.
within 14 days, which Idoubt it is
@@grrfyis it not 30 days
@@kamster5775 tbh that is what I thought, but when I googled it said 14?
Not when it's a business to business sale. He bought it for his UA-camr business so Consumer Rights Act does not apply as he is a business and not a consumer!
agree If the dealer want fix the issue it should have to PASS a MOT --- then reject the car and get your money back .
Im glad my Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio doesnt give me any major issues, sure its had its moments but nothing to leave me stranded on the road.
If you hear noise - there is wear - Wear destroys engines - nuff said.
Nooo! Not ideal but try and enjoy it as much as possible. I was stung by a car that had a clean MOT, total rot box!
For sticky, use neutrogena makeup remover wipes.
I would do the latter get it fixed go on and enjoy an adventure with the car, whatever you do don't scrap it! Cars like that need people who are willing to give life back and be driven how it's meant to be driven.
You could look at buying the parts and doing the work yourself? See if the dealer wants to cover the cost of the parts.
Hey, sorry if not seen but what was the sticker price?
£6k
Why why would u pay 6k for a car without warranty a clean mot and no service history 🤔
@@simonstewart3863 Insanity or UA-cam monetization...
Get your money back and make sure the dealer and MOT center are to task.
How much is parts and how much is labour? Do you need a ramp? With some basic tools could you attempt this yourself?
Sreten from M539 restorations is currently putting in engine no 2 on his one. Ask him what he thinks of the Maserati Quattraporte...
I love streten went to see him last year on my way to Berlin in my E38 .He called me project Manchester .
What made this a Category S car? I can't tell despite seeing all around it
Had same problem with the same car but here in Italy things are much cheaper. Spent just over one thosand euro for parts and labour, the difference between here and the UK is here same car with 150k miles will cost around 25k euro 😞
M539 restorations in Germany has an engine with new variatiors and chains.
Rattlerati……. Nice move Joel, more exciting than anything that you have bought in the past.
I would definitely return the car as a dodgy mot is obvious. Good luck. Still love them though. 👍👍👍
Try RVS treatment for engine. Might fix the problem for 100£
glad it stayed straight at 5.20 precisely.
Yep a bit of a twat move there.
Welcome to Maserati ownership! 🤝
Love ‘Mazza’s! 👍👍🦘🦘🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
