Can Harmony Transform this Simple Melody?

  • The #Brahms lullaby song is well known, but it's not very adventurous! Well, that's by design since it is meant to put a baby to sleep. So I figured, this is a perfect song to demonstrate 8 levels of harmony from simple to complex.
    This video is a part of my composer challenge series, and I've challenged 8 composers to help us demonstrate these levels of #harmony for us. We start with level 1 at the most basic level of harmony, all the way up to level 8, at a more complex level. This video is meant to show you how important harmony is, at any level. The #brahmslullaby theme that we know and love, has been transformed into so many different moods!
    Another secret agenda of this video is to help inspire new composers learn how to compose with harmony. Just take any simple #melody, and "harmonize" the melody using your own twist. This is a perfect way to learn how to compose without having to come up with your own melody.

    i really liked Nazarys variations, which sounded completely professional, and the modulations at the end of PCCs that you mentioned….this was some next-level video editing too! The reason my variations were in B and not C like the original tune is just cuz my instruments are tuned roughly a half step lower than A = 440, so if i play a C it will be close in pitch to B on a modern instrument. But you are correct that in modern tuning the sounding key is closer to B.

      I was wondering why your sheet music was in the key of C, but I was hearing B. That explains it, thanks for the explanation. And as far as my editing, first, thank you! And second, I'm always trying to come up with new ways to show material. Since some the material we go over on this channel is not the easiest, I think its important to demonstrate it in a fun or engaging way.

      @@musicjotter and i also should add that the music jotter playback definitely sounds like an improvement from what i was accustomed to when i used software, which hasn’t been for a few years but fwiw

      Thank you. Playback is very important to me. Music Jotter's playback for piano (or keyboard instruments) will be very good in its early stages. I will then have to figure out how to deal with other types of instruments though, but down the line.

    Nice video Mike! Just want to say that even there are levels base on the complexity of the harmony, it doesn’t mean that always using the higher level harmony is the best. Only if the musical content matches the harmony will make it most apt!

      Thank you. And 100% agree. Down the line maybe I'll have a contest around this. Who can make the best music using only functional harmony, and you can't leave the scale! Which means, you can't use any accidentals!

      @AwKeShen. Місяць тому +1

      Yup, very much agree with y'all too! Levels of harmonic complexity are to be compatible with ( and thus to do justice to ) the music itself.

      This is actually performed on a clavichord! Similar to a harpsichord, but a quieter and more expressive instrument.

      @@musicjotter I was going to say harpsichord first lol
      I was never going to get the answer. I've only seen a clavichord in museums and on UA-cam!

      @musicjotter  3 місяці тому +3

      lol its not a common instrument at all. I never expected the clavichord to become a part of my video repertoire, but here we are. It's a wonderful learning experience for both myself, and the audience here! Notice how @Byrdofparadise notated his sheet music. All by hand, in 15th century William Byrd style notation!
