Jingle Bells but 18 classical composers are decorating a christmas tree

- Merry Christmas! How many composers does it take to set up a Christmas tree? Watch this video to find out! This is another one of my "meme-quotation/pastiche" videos, where I have composers (represented by their themes) fight against each other while integrating the Jingle Bells motif whenever possible. I've put all the references in the timestamps below, but see if you can guess all of them!
On a side note, I've been wanting to have a better idea of integrating composers' styles into these meme parody videos, and after searching through youtube I have to say the most informative series I've seen so far has been Nahre Sol's "How to sound like insert composer" videos. Apart from that, I've found that studying how classical composers have done their variations has also been an eye-opener, very they can come up with some very interesting techniques. I've also been loving Victor Borge's performances, they're absolutely hilarious. Let me know in the comments if you have any other ideas or ways to learn, always open to suggestions!
For the purposes of the timestamps/analysis, the first part of Jingle Bells (Dashing through the snow...) will be referred to as JB1, and the 2nd half of Jingle Bells (Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way...) will be referred to as JB2.
0:00 - Jingle Bells theme in C major, with a slight modulation into B minor because why not haha
0:07 - JB1 in LH, counterpoint against JB2 in right hand.
0:13 - JB2 in counterpoint with "How do you (not) write a fugue" by Nicholas Ma (I put a self-quotation of one of my old compositions haha)
0:22 - Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58 - Chopin
0:37 - Flight of the Bumblebee, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
0:39 - Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op 13 - Beethoven
0:49 - Given that this is the "Pathetique" Sonata, I thought it was funny for Beethoven to call someone pathetic haha
1:01 - Wanderer Fantasy, Op 15 - Schubert - Picardy-esque resolution leads nicely into this C major (and yes, the annotations has Schubert "wandering")
1:05 - Symphony No. 5 - Beethoven
1:10 - JB2 mixed with Wanderer Fantasy
1:14 - Little Neapolitan pivot allows us to modulate to E minor
1:16 - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - Tchaikovsky, in counterpoint with Silent Night (middle voice in LH)
1:25 - Silent Night is transposed, but still maintained in conjunction with Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
1:32 - Symphony 9 "From the New World" - Dvorak (in RH), and the lick (in LH)
1:35 - Symphony 5 Beethoven (in LH), while Dvorak Symphony 9 is still in RH
1:41 - Silent Night mixed with Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 - Chopin
1:58 - "Emperor" Piano Concerto No. 5 - Beethoven + JB2 (in middle voice)
2:06 - La Campanella, Étude 3 of S. 141 - Liszt
2:16 - Fur Elise - Beethoven, but in the style of Liszt/La Campanella
2:26 - Back to La Campanella
2:29 - Piano Sonata No. 23 Op 57 Mov 1 "Appassionata" - Beethoven
2:34 - JB2 in Left Hand (forming a Hemiola-like effect due to the triple meter against Jingle Bells)
2:44 - JB2 Hemiola is used as an enharmonic pivot into A minor (through bar 79's Fb major seventh chord, which is enharmonically similar to E major chord, the dominant seventh of A minor)
2:47 - Piano Concerto Op 7, Mov. 3 - Clara Schumann
2:54 - Piano Concerto Op 54, Mov. 1 - Robert Schumann
2:58 - Variations on a Theme of Paganini Op. 35 - Brahms, Variation 2 in LH, JB2 in RH
3:14 - Also Brahms Paganini Variations, but Variation 13 from Book 2
3:22 - JB2 in LH against Brahms Paganini Variations
3:38 - Prelude Op 23 No 5 - Rachmaninoff
3:41 - Eine Kleine Natchmusik K. 525 - Mozart
3:43 - Piano Concerto No. 3 - Rachmaninoff
3:47 - Among Us (the story fit it, AND it fit perfectly into Rach 3... I just had to do it haha)
3:55 - Little transition into Grieg Piano Concerto Op. 16
4:01 - Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 - Bach
4:05 - Morning Mood from Peer Gynt, Grieg
4:09 - Sonata No. 8 in A Minor, K 310 - Mozart
4:13 - Bach Toccata BWV 565 again
4:16 - "Ondine" from Gaspard de la Nuite (Mov. 1) - Ravel
4:21 - JB2 in LH, Ondine in RH
4:37 - Voiles - Debussy (in LH), against Ondine-like accompaniment in RH
4:45 - Etude Tableau Op 39 No 6 "Little Red Riding Hood" - Rachmaninoff
4:56 - JB2 in LH, Op 39 No 6 in RH
5:01 - JB1 in LH, Op 39 No 6 in RH
5:07 - Back to Op 39 No 6 only
5:14 - Hints of JB1 and JB2 are blended into the buildup
5:37 - James Lord Pierpoint was the person who originally wrote Jingle Bells in 1857, so he's definitely making a cameo appearance here haha
5:47 - Cadenza from Piano Concerto No. 3 - Rachmaninoff
5:54 - Bach Toccata BWV 565
5:57 - Bach to Rach 3 Cadenza buildup
6:00 - JB1 (in RH top voice), mixed with Rach 3 Cadenza (I also cut/extend the melody's timing a bit, as evidenced with the 2/4 bars: eg. cut at bar 204, elongate at bar 211)
6:27 - Prelude Op 23 No 5 - Rachmaninoff
6:29 - JB2 is interspersed with the ending of Prelude Op 23 No 5
6:43 - Final iteration of Jingle Bells!

beethoven telling everyone to shut up is always the funniest part of these
Especially because he's deaf
especially since hes deaf
+ bach tackling everyone
Nicholas is obviously dealing with the mid-twenties years of Beethoven, yes?
These pieces are really quite clever :-)
Yeah because he can't even hear
I love how Beethoven is telling everyone to shut up when he's deaf lmao
well he was also incredibly temperamental
@@blitsriderfield4099Whereas Bach was well tempered?
@@DerekHartley XD
Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way. We deserve Hell because we've sinned. Lied, lusted stolen, etc. But God sent his son to die on the cross and rise out of the grave. We can receive forgiveness from Jesus. Repent and put your trust in him.
John 3:16
Romans 3:23❤😊❤❤
@christianweatherbroadcasti3491 me and jesus are actually besties 🫱🫲👌🤌🤏🦾🤪
the way i can imagine chopin quietly still decorating the tree while the others are fighting (and being pretty sad when the tree ends up being used as a weapon)
Yeahhh, poor chopin :(
:( I can feel his sadness
I know, but it would have been crazier if Iron Maiden from Twisted Metal (PS 3 console) came in and started shooting fire-balls while Mozart would be busy preparing a faction leader for sacrifice
@@Belchmaster41 well that got darl
True!!
This is why you should never leave 18 composers in a room with a piano and a lust for blood
XD
I mean, as a pianist, it's not just composers. What pianist does not walk into a room with a piano and feel a strong urge to sit down and play it?
@@RandomPerson-vq9kw ME, well I'm not a pianist but I've been playing for many years and my social anxiety with the fact that I'm really bad at playing the piano makes the urge to sit and play very resistible (I still feel it a bit but not strongly)
And a bath of blood becausr its an aftermath of a cataclysm and becomes after cata bath
we really need an animated version fo these
YES! I've been thinking about that with these videos. I'd pay good money to make it happen.
I’ll make an animatic
Replying for the notification
I'm waiting for the ballet
@@petbird19 we'd join the gofundme as well
I love how this went from a simple “help me decorate the christmas tree😊😊” to solving a crime scene and rachmaninoff absolutely going mad
Love how this turned into a court room
@@sliksta111 Which turns out to be trial by combat.
man these guys can't do anything festive without someone eventually choosing violence
I love that this is essentially musical fanfiction. This is high art.
This was definitely as funny as the birthday one
Definitely!
Thank you! Glad it lives up to the previous happy birthday video hype haha
Ikr
@@NicholasMaMusic Thank you for creating this video and the birthday one!
@@NicholasMaMusic is it ok if I animate these? I will give credit I just really want to animate it and have seen other people that want it animated as well
"rachmaninoff makes mozart wish he completed that requiem earlier" 🤣
Thank you, thank you so much for this great work!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Have to admit, I laughed out loud a little too much at that one.
That was the best!!
@@NicholasMaMusicYou are a genius! Hats off to you!
If I go on watching these píeces, they're going to throw me out of the condo ... BRILLIANT!!
Plays "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" as Tchaikovsky enters with sugar and plums🤣The jokes in here are amazing. And it's so impressive how you could put all these different pieces-each with their own style and key-together to create something so harmonious and beautiful!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed all the jokes!
I was literally thinking the same thing!! that part made me laugh😂
Every ballerina in a 10 mile radius once they hear Tchaikovskys music: "WE HAVE BEEN AWAKENED."
Luckily it was Christmas, or he would bring the cannons...
Tchaikovsky: Bitches I already OWN Christmas, just give up.
This was wild 🤣The climax was absolutely hilarious: "Rachmaninoff, still not done, uses the tree as a weapon" but I still find myself laughing way too hard at: "Beethoven smacks the bee" / "Beethoven calls Rimsky-Korsakov pathic." 🤣😭
those bits were absolute stomach tickler, even I read your comment and still laughed
i can image the 18 artist go "NOT THERE, PUT IT HERE" and "NO THOSE CRESCENDOS GO UP HERE" and "GOSH DAMMIT ITS TOO LOUD"
I lost it when Beethoven smacked the bee and never recovered it for the rest of the piece. I'm still trying to regain my composure. BRILLIANT, and great fun.
Haha great to hear, thanks for watching!
I can’t be the only one who burst out a laugh on “rimsky-korsakov freaks out a bee in the house”
I don’t even know who they are but reading the text as the song transitions to flight of the bumblebee was enough to make me laugh
Beethoven smacking the bee shortly after and then calling rimsky-korsakov was hillarious
@@bigmac9636 "Pathetique."
- Beethoven
HOLY SHIT, I heard the Dvorak 9th Symphony when I was in fifth grade and I have been humming the melody to people for LITERALLY DECADES attempting to figure out what classical composer or song it was, with no luck. The closest I've gotten is a couple people saying "That melody sounds familiar but I can't place it."
You just helped me solve a 20 year old mystery!!! it's a Christmas miracle! 😂
That's fantastic to hear, glad to have helped you solve this mystery!
I CAME HERE TO SAY NEARLY THE SAME
Everybody else probably thought it was Star Wars...
Ayyy, Czech here glad you like Dvořák!
I love the part where "clara schumann enters, nearly crashes into beethoven"
combined with "robert schumann gracefully catches clara before she falls"
results in "brahms is not impressed"
It's such a subtle reference but I'm glad you included it!
wait explain pls I am uncultured
In short, Brahms was also in love with Clara- Just search up the relationship between Brahms and Clara Schumann
@@masonwong6131 ah OK that sounds familiar
Beethoven just wants everyone out of the house.
i cannot comprehend how these are ALWAYS so funny and so beautiful at the same time. also, the raw power of beethoven telling people he cant hear to shut up. i aspire to have that energy.
Thank you! Looks like Beethoven is simply built different haha
@Nicholas Ma the man is 80% anger and the rest is musical talent
cmon bach tackling ppl to the ground trumps beethoven any day
Poor Mozart! You guys have no sense of humour, it was just a jumpscare LOL 😂😂😂 YOU'RE A GENIUS, Nicholas!!!
Blame Rachmaninoff, who ruined Christmas for everyone.
The first half is basically Beethoven trolling everyone else and the second half is a fight between Mozart and Rachmaninoff
Omg the tension in the chase scene made my heart beat as fast as Rachmaninoff’s piece. Such genius!
Haha thank you!
"Debussy wonders why a water sprite has a law degree" really caught me off guard 😂
as a person who has some music history and theory knowledge, this feels like reading a crackfic but musically. and i love it.
The composition. The references. The characterization. Flawless, no notes.
Thank you!
The way bach keeps tackling ppl is so funny! This must have taken a lot of effort, kudos to you!!
Thank you! I thought bach should be fit enough to do the heavy work given how he once walked about 400km/250 miles to meet buxtehude haha
@@NicholasMaMusic Didn't he also once duel one of his cellists to the death?
ETA: Correction...it was a bassoonist
Tchaikovsky playing Russian Dance while Rach is destroying Mozart:👁️👄👁️
I understand why Stravinski is never invited, but I would like to know what happens when he arrives anyway.
haha who knows, maybe he'll "Spring" into action soon enough ;)
Either that or he swoops in on a pheonix and sets fire to the whole place...?
@@chrisoddy8744YESSSS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!
@@NicholasMaMusic you TEASE
Another composer: (does literally anything)
Beethoven: *SHUT UP*
Brahms not being impressed at Robert and Clara Schumann’s romance is peak real-life-inspired drama and I’m here for it
*"Chopin all that time waiting for help"*
Some say to this day chopin is still waiting haha
@@NicholasMaMusic Untill Mozart slipped over the tree.
Well, in the end, he will have to chop another tree 😁
Bach just over here tackling everyone. Love it.
This is literally musical and comedic genius
Thanks!
@@NicholasMaMusic ofc ofc!
Beethoven telling everyone to shut up will never not be funny considering he ... well, might not be able to hear them anyway.
I’d be James Lord Pierpont in this situation; grabbing the popcorn and watching the fireworks fly🤣
✨Beethoven asking everyone to shut up ✨
I can't help but Mozart run toward the door in such a cartoony moves, It's perfect!
Man, Beethoven and Bach sure are savages...
Also when Beethoven storms out at 2:29 for some reason I pictured him flipping the piano and leaving
This is the most chaotic Christmas tree decoration I've ever witnessed and I didn't even see it
The fact that Bach repeatedly tackles people to the floor to the start of Tocatta and Fugue will never not be hilarious to me.
From decorating a christmas tree to almost murder?
Shit went from 0 to 100 REAL FAST
This appeals to a VERY specific segment of the population and I’m here for it
"Rachmaninoff wishes Mozart had finished that Requiem earlier"
Help ☠️
i love how beethoven is telling everyone to shut up again
Poor Chopin and his lights [*] They destroyed his tree :'(
"Rachmaninoff makes Mozart wish he completed that reqiuem earlier" BRUHH 😂
Rachmaninoff waking up and Mozart backing away is genius, that's my favorite part lmao
Also Beethoven is the consistent bully of the gang and I love him
It’s so expressive, I feel like I’m watching a movie
Welcome to another round of 5-year-olds fighting for a piece of rubber.
In this video, we learnt that... Beethoven is a bully. Get him out of here, I just want to sleep in the fireplace.
"5 years" actually 150+ years olds XD
I loved when Beethoven called Rimsky-Korsakov pathetique.
the part Rachmaninoff faints because of Mozart jump scare is my favorite part amazing lmao
Beethoven:- tells Listz to shut up-
Listz: -plays louder- What was that? sorry I can't hear you over my superior piano playing.
Beethoven: 😠😡🤬
Beethoven: I can't hear your superior piano playing
Imagine playing this in front of an audience 😂
Chopin and Tchaikovsky were the only one who took their job serious. One was in charge of the tree, the other one prepared dinner
True-
I just love this so much. Beethoven owns my heart since the happy birthday arrangement and here I fell even harder. I enjoyed Tchaikovsky's part as well, since he's one of my favourites ❤
Thank you for blessing us with such a marvellous piece!
Thank you for watching!
While he keeps telling everyone to shut up?
@@jackychan7758 such a mood 💖
"Sets up the Christmas tree in B minor" - genius!
I love how Beethoven is always aggressive
Thanks to you, I have figured out why Beethoven is my favorite classical composer. I too am a curmudgeon who is always telling people to shut up., so it makes sense. 🤣 Once again, brilliant work! 🥰💕
you know you are in trouble when you hear symphony no 5 by beethoven while you play the piano
🤣
I love these so much! I played piano as a child for 5 years and this makes me wish to play again! The music is so well made and the notation is beautiful, so much art goes into such a whimsical piece! Thankyou so much!
Thank you for your kind words!
if i were you, i'd resume practicing/playing
playing music is almost panacea for the soul
that cheeky little resolving chord at the very end made me bust out laughing. i could produce a full stage play to this based on your transcription notes ALONE this is amazing
Beethoven missed the chaos because he was too busy telling people to shut up
the sheer drama. the pure comedy. this is peak entertainment
i think stories are best when left largely to the imagination and this?? this is almost entirely imagination but so vivid
And here I thought it was only in my house that there was so much drama in putting up the tree!
The fact that this is really funny, has a story and genuinely sounds good is bizarre to me, 10/10!
Haha thank you for your praise!
I LOVED the Mozart jumpscare. I totally pictured a fnaf animatronic version of mozart doing the jumpscare with that exact music!
This was, as always, a masterpiece.
Unbelievable! 😂😂
You really point out all those characteristics! Love Beethoven’s outraging attitude 😁😁
Bach tackling everyone and Greig proving his innocence are my favourite parts in this video! Amazing work though 💞 and a Happy New Year!
That Fur Elise/La Campanella duo at 2:15 was so groovy! Loved that combo!
Such a genius composition! It had me laughing so hard with the chase scene!
Thank you! It was a great joy to picture the scene and write it out as well!
Istg this is more engaging than most movies I've seen recently
Immeasurably so.
I love how it’s always Beethoven that starts the chaos
Beethoven telling everyone to shut up....Imma assume this is before he was deaf, right, got it. My favorite part was when Ravel summons Ondine to be his lawyer
I dont play the piano, I dont even know who half these people are. But this is wonderful, and you should keep doing it!
For a minute I thought James Lord Pierpont was a classical composer I hadn't heard of but of course he made the whole thing possible.
oh my GOD the way you wrote fur elise in the style of la campanella had me absolutely kicking my feet
Bach tackles everyone to the ground 😂
Quarter Bach
🤣
Yes
LMAO bach about to be drafted into the NFL haha
this song is when my family is fighting over politicss at christmas dinner.
when i tell you the “wander” part had me dead- my fav genre of videos
I love these! EVERY time you make one, there is no doubt I will save it to my phone, make it an alarm for something, and listen to it while watching repeatedly. They are comedy gold AND ear candy!
Thank you, I'm honored to hear that!
Dvorak new world mixed with beethoven's 5th would make a great joke classical piece. The chopin and silent night was another great idea that was going somewhere.
I wish I watched this on Christmas Eve, probably made my Holiday Special🎄
The chaos is still going lmao
This is gold! The way you described all the characters in the score, so accurate. Beethoven trying to shut up everyone😂
When I once again listened to the video about the fight of the composers for the last piece of cake, which even after thousands of plays makes me laugh, I thought: "Hmm, what if this genius did the same but with Jingle bells?". And oh my god! On the same day I stumbled upon this video! I just want to say thank you for the incredible work and the genius of both the composition itself and your jokes :). Keep going, we are waiting for your new masterpieces!
06:07 that line hit hard and its historically acurate
This is just too perfect, it’s the exact demonstration of how music can describe situations, feelings and emotions, also the video was excellently made, keep up the good work my guy!
Somebody needs to show this to TwoSet Violin
Love these, even without the score I can absolutely hear them wander into each scene. Brilliant
I. need. The WORLD TO WATCH THIS MASTERPIECE you have truly made my day merry christmas you genius 🎄
Thank you for watching, merry christmas to you too!
Them: All dreams have meanings!
My dreams:
The piece ends without telling us if they ever got another tree. The composer forces us to ponder a deeper reality. It raises the question about starting a conversation on if valuable things can be replaced if broken, things such as earth, relationships, etc.,
I only got about half the jokes in this and I absolutely loved it.
The music is already enough but the captions add so so much
amazing arrangement again lololol
the fact i wondered where mozart was at the exactly 3:39 XD
anyway merry xmas to you and everyone else :DDD
Merry xmas to you too!
Poor Chopin he must've been heartbroken 😂
I cannot express in words how much I LOVE these! I hope you're able to continue making things like this. Probably the only way I'll listen to classical music
Thank you, definitely interested in making more of these styles of composition videos in the future!
I cannot at how genius this is...
This channel is underrated for such effort, you deserve millions of subscribers ❤
This is the second time you made my day 😊❤
Thank you!
If you listen carefully, John Cage was actually there too
Haha - I think I'd thought that before I read your comment but didn't realize that I'd thought it! 😄
I am crying with laughter!! Brilliantly presented and performed. I visualized all the action and am still laughing!!😂❤️ Thank you!
I am so glad you waited until AFTER I had mostly recovered from the flu to post this so I could laugh properly.
